Masses, fermions and generalized D-dimensional unitarity

We extend the generalized D-dimensional unitarity method for numerical evaluation of one-loop amplitudes by incorporating massive particles. The issues related to extending the spinor algebra to higher dimensions, treatment of external self-energy diagrams and mass renormalization are discussed within the context of the D-dimensional unitarity method. To validate our approach, we calculate in QCD the one-loop scattering amplitudes of a massive quark pair with up to three additional gluons for arbitrary spin states of the external quarks and gluons.

A Numerical Unitarity Formalism for Evaluating One-Loop Amplitudes

Recent progress in unitarity techniques for one-loop scattering amplitudes makes a numerical implementation of this method possible. We present a 4-dimensional unitarity method for calculating the cut-constructible part of amplitudes and implement the method in a numerical procedure. Our technique can be applied to any one-loop scattering amplitude and offers the possibility that one-loop calculations can be performed in an automatic fashion, as tree-level amplitudes are currently done. Instead of individual Feynman diagrams, the ingredients for our one-loop evaluation are tree-level amplitudes, which are often already known. To study the practicality of this method we evaluate the cut-constructible part of the 4, 5 and 6 gluon one-loop amplitudes numerically, using the analytically known 4, 5 and 6 gluon tree-level amplitudes. Comparisons with analytic answers are performed to ascertain the numerical accuracy of the method.

Vector Boson Pair Production in Hadronic Collisions at Order $α_s$: Lepton Correlations and Anomalous Couplings

We present cross sections for production of electroweak vector boson pairs, $WW$, $WZ$ and $ZZ$, in $p\bar{p}$ and $pp$ collisions, at next-to-leading order in $α_s$. We treat the leptonic decays of the bosons in the narrow-width approximation, but retain all spin information via decay angle correlations. We also include the effects of $WWZ$ and $WWγ$ anomalous couplings.

Hard scattering factorization and light cone hamiltonian approach to diffractive processes

We describe diffractive deeply inelastic scattering in terms of diffractive parton distributions. We investigate these distributions in a hamiltonian formulation that emphasizes the spacetime picture of diffraction scattering. For hadronic systems with small transverse size, diffraction occurs predominantly at short distances and the diffractive parton distributions can be studied by perturbative methods. For realistic, large-size systems we discuss the possibility that diffractive parton distributions are controlled essentially by semihard physics at a scale of nonperturbative origin of the order of a GeV. We find that this possibility accounts for two important qualitative aspects of the diffractive data from HERA: the flat behavior in beta and the delay in the fall-off with Q^2.

Two photons plus jet al LHC: the NNLO contribution from the gg initiated process

The production of the Standard Model Higgs boson of mass ~ 100-140 GeV at the LHC likely gives clear signals in the $γγ$ (1) and in the $γγjet$ (2) channels. The quantitative evaluation of the background to channel (1) is very hard since the next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections are large. In particular, the contributions of the NNLO QCD subprocess $gg -> γγ$ to inclusive $γγ$ production is comparable to the contribution of the leading order subprocess $q\bar{q} -> γγ$. The quantitative description of the background to channel (1), therefore, requires to calculate all corrections up to the NNNLO level. In this letter we present results on the contribution of the NNLO QCD subprocess $gg -> g γγ$ to the production rate of channel (2). We have found that in this case this NNLO contribution is less than 20% of the Born contribution. Since the NNLO contributions will likely be dominated by this subprocess one can argue that in the case of channel (2) - contrary to the case of channel (1)- a quantitative description of the background can be achieved already at next-to-leading order accuracy.

Higgs production with large transverse momentum in hadronic collisions at next-to-leading order

Inclusive associated production of a light Higgs boson (m_H < m_t) with one jet in pp collisions is studied in next-to-leading order QCD. Transverse momentum (p_T < 30 GeV) and rapidity distributions of the Higgs boson are calculated for the LHC in the large top-quark mass limit. It is pointed out that, as much as in the case of inclusive Higgs production, the K-factor of this process is large (~1.6) and depends weakly on the kinematics in a wide range of transverse momentum and rapidity intervals. Our result confirms previous suggestions that the production channel p+p -> H+jet -> gamma+gamma+jet gives a measurable signal for Higgs production at the LHC in the mass range 100-140 GeV, crucial also for the ultimate test of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Diffractive deeply inelastic scattering of hadronic states with small transverse size

Diffractive deeply inelastic scattering from a hadron is described in terms of diffractive quark and gluon distributions. If the transverse size of the hadronic state is sufficiently small, these distributions are calculable using perturbation theory. We present such a calculation and discuss the underlying dynamics. We comment on the relation between this dynamics and the pattern of scaling violation observed in the hard diffraction of large-size states at HERA.

The light-cone gauge and the calculation of the two-loop splitting functions

We present calculations of next-to-leading order QCD splitting functions, employing the light-cone gauge method of Curci, Furmanski, and Petronzio (CFP). In contrast to the `principal-value' prescription used in the original CFP paper for dealing with the poles of the light-cone gauge gluon propagator, we adopt the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription which is known to have a solid field-theoretical foundation. We find that indeed the calculation using this prescription is conceptionally clear and avoids the somewhat dubious manipulations of the spurious poles required when the principal-value method is applied. We reproduce the well-known results for the flavour non-singlet splitting function and the N_C^2 part of the gluon-to-gluon singlet splitting function, which are the most complicated ones, and which provide an exhaustive test of the ML prescription. We also discuss in some detail the x=1 endpoint contributions to the splitting functions.

Erratum: Jet Cluster Algorithms in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation

We correct an important misprint in the journal version of our earlier work on "New Jet Cluster Algorithms: Next-to-leading Order QCD...", published in Nucl. Phys. B 370 (1992) 310, which may have lead to an incorrect parametrisation of the leading order QCD coefficients for the JADE type jet cluster algorithms.

Helicity Amplitudes for ${\cal O}(α_s)$ Production of $W^+ W^-, W^\pm Z, Z Z, W^\pm γ,$ or $Z γ$ Pairs at Hadron Colliders

We present the one-loop QCD corrections to the helicity amplitudes for the processes $q\qb \to W^+ W^-, Z Z, W^\pm Z, W^\pm γ$, or $Z γ$, including the subsequent decay of each massive vector boson into a pair of leptons. We also give the corresponding tree-level amplitudes with an additional gluon radiated off the quark line. Together, these amplitudes provide all the necessary input for the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of any electroweak vector boson pair at hadron colliders, including the full spin and decay angle correlations.

The physics potential of the LHC

This talk is a short overview of the physics potential of the LHC with emphasis on Higgs search and SUSY search. First I review why LHC with the ATLAS and CMS detectors is expected to give a decisive test of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism of the Standard Model. Then I consider the Higgs sector of the Standard Model (SM). Finally the search for supersymmetry is discussed within the framework of various implementation of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM).

Report of the Working Group on `W Mass and QCD' (Phenomenology Workshop on LEP2 Physics, Oxford, April 1997)

The W Mass and QCD Working Group discussed a wide variety of topics relating to present and future measurements of M(W) at LEP2, including QCD backgrounds to W+W- production. Particular attention was focused on experimental issues concerning the direct reconstruction and threshold mass measurements, and on theoretical and experimental issues concerning the four jet final state. This report summarises the main conclusions.
