QCD Corrections and the Leptoquark Interpretation of the HERA High Q^2 Events

The excess of high-$Q^2$ events found by H1 and ZEUS at HERA in $e^+p$ deep-inelastic scattering above the Standard Model prediction motivates us to calculate the NLO QCD corrections to the HERA scalar leptoquark (or squark) production cross sections. We find that the corrections are significant, of order 50% in the mass range of interest. We also calculate the leptoquark average transverse momentum squared and find it to be rather small. Various leptoquark production cross sections at the Tevatron $p \bar p$ collider are also considered. We investigate in detail the leptoquark interpretation of the HERA data. First we assume a minimal leptoquark model with a single diagonal Yukawa coupling to first family lepton and quark mass eigenstates only. In this case constraints from atomic parity violating experiments allow only isodoublet scalar leptoquark production at HERA. This interpretation can be confirmed or ruled out in the near future by high luminosity data at the Tevatron. The Tevatron data already appear to rule out the vector leptoquark interpretation of the HERA data. We also consider a more general model which allows for all possible left-handed, right-handed, flavour and lepton number changing couplings. The allowed values of the Yukawa couplings of this general model offer several different interpretations of the data which are radically different from the minimal model solutions. However these somewhat ad hoc tuned solutions can easily be tested by future HERA experiments.

Higgs Production at the LHC: an Update on Cross Sections and Branching Ratios

New theoretical and experimental information motivates a re-examination of the Standard Model Higgs production rates at the LHC pp collider. We present calculations of the relevant cross sections and branching ratios, including recently calculated QCD next-to-leading order corrections, new parton distributions fitted to recent HERA structure function data, and new values for electroweak input parameters, in particular for the top quark mass. Cross sections are calculated at two collider energies, $\sqrt{s} = 10$ TeV and 14 TeV.

Diffractive Higgs Production at the LHC

We use diffractive parton distributions obtained from fits to the diffractive structure function measured at HERA to predict cross sections for single diffractive Higgs production at the LHC. The dominant background processes are also considered. Although some 5% - 15% of Higgs events are predicted to be diffractive in this model, the ratio of signal to background is not significantly improved.

Hard diffractive scattering: partons and QCD

The HERA diffractive structure function data are interpreted in terms of `diffractive parton distributions' which satisfy DGLAP evolution. These distributions are modeled assuming that the scattering takes place off a colour singlet `pomeron' target. A quantitative test of the universality of diffractive parton distributions is proposed.

From scattering amplitudes to cross sections in QCD

I describe how to calculate cross sections for hard-scattering processes in high energy collisions at next to leading order in QCD. I consider infrared-safe quantities and I assume that the scattering amplitudes are known in analytic form up to next-to-leading order. The main topic is the description of the algorithm for the analytic cancellation of the soft and collinear singularities in the loop and bremsstrahlung contributions. The method is systematic and general. It allows the construction of an analytic expression for finite next-to-leading order hard scattering cross sections suitable for numerical evaluation.

Determination of the mass of the W boson

Previous studies of the physics potential of LEP2 indicated that with the design luminosity of 500 inverse picobarn one may get a direct measurement of the mass of the W-boson with a precision in the range 30 - 50 MeV. This report presents an updated evaluation of the estimated error on the mass of the W-boson based on recent simulation work and improved theoretical input. The most efficient experimental methods which will be used are also described.

Three-jet cross sections to next-to-leading order

One- and two-jet inclusive quantities in hadron collisions have already been calculated to next-to-leading order accuracy, using both the subtraction and the cone method. Since the one-loop corrections have recently been obtained for all five-parton amplitudes, three-jet inclusive quantities can also be predicted to next-to-leading order. The subtraction method presented in the literature is based on a systematic use of boost-invariant kinematical variables, and therefore its application to three-jet production is quite cumbersome. In this paper we re-analyze the subtraction method and point out the advantage of using angle and energy variables. This leads to simpler results and it has complete generality, extending its validity to $n$-jet production. The formalism is also applicable to $n$-jet production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and in photon-hadron collisions. All the analytical results necessary to construct an efficient numerical program for next-to-leading order three-jet inclusive quantities in hadroproduction are given explicitly. As new analytical result, we also report the collinear limits of all the two-to-four processes.

Gauge boson masses dominantly generated by Higgs-triplet contributions?

We discuss a model in which the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector has been extended by additional real and complex triplets. The $ρ\approx 1$ constraint is satisfied by restricting the potential to have an enlarged $\hisym $ global symmetry. This is fine tuning, which leads to a decreased predictability in next-to-leading order. In this model, however, the triplet vacuum expectation values may give the dominating contribution to the gauge boson masses. Using a renormalization group argument we constrain this region of the parameter space. Another interesting feature of this model is that one of the neutral scalars doesn't couple to the fermion sector at tree level and therefore could have a relatively large branching ratio to $2γ$'s. It is coupled, however, to the $Z$-boson and therefore it could be produced at LEP via the standard $e^+e^-\rightarrow Zϕ$ mechanism with rates comparable to the ones of the Standard Model.

Testing the Higgs Sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at Large Hadron Colliders

We study the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, in the context of proton-proton collisions at LHC and SSC energies. We assume a relatively heavy supersymmetric particle spectrum, and include recent results on one-loop radiative corrections to Higgs-boson masses and couplings. We begin by discussing present and future constraints from the LEP experiments. We then compute branching ratios and total widths for the neutral ($h,H,A$) and charged ($H^\pm$) Higgs particles. We present total cross-sections and event rates for the important discovery channels at the LHC and SSC. Promising physics signatures are given by $h \to γγ$, $H \to γγ$ or $Z^* Z^*$ or $τ^+ τ^-$, $A \to τ^+ τ^-$, and $t \to b H^+$ followed by $H^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$, which should allow for an almost complete coverage of the parameter space of the model.
