Depth Dependence of the Structural Phase Transition of SrTiO_3 Studied with β-NMR and Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction

We present an investigation of the near-surface tetragonal phase transition in SrTiO3, using the complementary techniques of beta-detected nuclear magnetic resonance and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. The results show a clear depth dependence of the phase transition on scales of a few microns. The measurements support a model in which there are tetragonal domains forming in the sample at temperatures much higher than the bulk phase transition temperature. Moreover, we find that these domains tend to form at higher temperatures preferentially near the free surface of the crystal. The details of the tetragonal domain formation and their depth/lateral dependencies are discussed.

Search for broken time-reversal symmetry near the surface of YBCO films using Beta-NMR

Weak spontaneous magnetic fields are observed near the surface of YBCO films using Beta-detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Below Tc, the magnetic field distribution in a silver film evaporated onto the superconductor shows additional line broadening, indicating the appearance of small disordered magnetic fields. The line broadening increases linearly with a weak external magnetic field applied parallel to the surface, and is depth-independent up to 45 nm from the Ag/YBCO interface. The magnitude of the line broadening at 10 K extrapolated to zero applied field is less than 0.2 G, and is close to nuclear dipolar broadening in the Ag. This indicates that any fields due to broken time-reversal symmetry are less than 0.2 G.

Probing the magnetic ground state of the molecular Dysprosium triangle

We present zero field muon spin lattice relaxation measurements of a Dysprosium triangle molecular magnet. The local magnetic fields sensed by the implanted muons indicate the coexistence of static and dynamic internal magnetic fields below $T^* ~35$ K. Bulk magnetization and heat capacity measurements show no indication of magnetic ordering below this temperature. We attribute the static fields to the slow relaxation of the magnetization in the ground state of Dy3. The fluctuation time of the dynamic part of the field is estimated to be ~0.55 $μ$s at low temperatures

Vortex lattice disorder in YBCO probed using Beta-NMR

Beta-NMR has been used to study vortex lattice disorder near the surface of the high-Tc superconductor YBCO. The magnetic field distribution from the vortex lattice was detected by implanting a low energy beam of highly polarized 8Li into a thin overlayer of silver on optimally doped, twinned and detwinned YBCO samples. The resonance in Ag broadens significantly below the transition temperature Tc as expected from the emerging field lines of the vortex lattice in YBCO. However, the lineshape is more symmetric and the dependence on the applied magnetic field is much weaker than expected from an ideal vortex lattice, indicating that the vortex density varies across the face of the sample, likely due to pinning at twin boundaries. At low temperatures the broadening from such disorder does not scale with the superfluid density.

What relaxes muon spins in molecular nanomagnets?

We address the cause of the unusual muon spin relaxation (muSR) results on molecular nanomagnets (MNMs). Through measurements on protonated and deuterated samples of the MNMs Cr7Mn (S=1) and Cr8 (S=0), we show that the muon spin for $S \neq 0$ MNMs is relaxed via dynamic fluctuations of the electronic spins. A freezing out of dynamic processes occurs on cooling and at low temperatures the muon spins are relaxed by the electronic spins which themselves are dephased by incoherent nuclear field fluctuations. We observe a transition to a state of static magnetic order of the MNM electronic spins in Cr7Mn below 2 K.

Proximal magnetometry of monolayers of single molecule magnets on gold using polarized muons

The magnetic properties of a monolayer of Fe4 single molecule magnets grafted onto a Au (111) thin film have been investigated using low energy muon spin rotation. The properties of the monolayer are compared to bulk Fe4. We find that the magnetic properties in the monolayer are consistent with those measured in the bulk, strongly indicating that the single molecule magnet nature of Fe4 is preserved in a monolayer. However, differences in the temperature dependencies point to a small difference in their energy scale. We attribute this to a ~60% increase in the intramolecular magnetic interactions in the monolayer.

Persistent Spin Dynamics in the $S=1/2$ V$_{15}$ Molecular Nano-Magnet

We present muon spin lattice relaxation measurements in the V15 spin 1/2 molecular nano-magnet. We find that the relaxation rate in low magnetic fields (<5 kG) is temperature independent below ~10 K, implying that the molecular spin is dynamically fluctuating down to 12 mK. These measurements show that the fluctuation time increases as the temperature is decreased and saturates at a value of ~6 nsec at low temperatures. The fluctuations are attributed to V15 molecular spin dynamics perpendicular to the applied magnetic field direction, induced by coupling between the molecular spin and nuclear spin bath in the system.

Local Magnetic Properties of a Monolayer of Mn12 Single Molecule Magnets

The magnetic properties of a monolayer of Mn12 single molecule magnets grafted onto a Si substrate have been investigated using depth-controlled $β$-detected nuclear magnetic resonance. A low energy beam of spin polarized radioactive 8Li was used to probe the local static magnetic field distribution near the Mn12 monolayer in the Si substrate. The resonance linewidth varies strongly as a function of implantation depth as a result of the magnetic dipolar fields generated by the Mn12 electronic magnetic moments. The temperature dependence of the linewidth indicates that the magnetic properties of the Mn12 moments in this low dimensional configuration differ from bulk Mn12.

Hyperfine Fields in an Ag/Fe Multilayer Film Investigated with 8Li beta-Detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Low energy $β$-detected nuclear magnetic resonance ($β$-NMR) was used to investigate the spatial dependence of the hyperfine magnetic fields induced by Fe in the nonmagnetic Ag of an Au(40 Å)/Ag(200 Å)/Fe(140 Å) (001) magnetic multilayer (MML) grown on GaAs. The resonance lineshape in the Ag layer shows dramatic broadening compared to intrinsic Ag. This broadening is attributed to large induced magnetic fields in this layer by the magnetic Fe layer. We find that the induced hyperfine field in the Ag follows a power law decay away from the Ag/Fe interface with power $-1.93(8)$, and a field extrapolated to $0.23(5)$ T at the interface.

Magnetism in the high-Tc analogue Cs2AgF4 studied with muon-spin relaxation

We present the results of a muon-spin relaxation study of the high-Tc analogue material Cs2AgF4. We find unambiguous evidence for magnetic order, intrinsic to the material, below T_C=13.95(3) K. The ratio of inter- to intraplane coupling is estimated to be |J'/J|=1.9 x 10^-2, while fits of the temperature dependence of the order parameter reveal a critical exponent beta=0.292(3), implying an intermediate character between pure two- and three- dimensional magnetism in the critical regime. Above T_C we observe a signal characteristic of dipolar interactions due to linear F-mu-F bonds, allowing the muon stopping sites in this compound to be characterized.

Giant Vortices Below the Surface of NbSe$_2$ Detected Using Low Energy $β$-NMR

A low energy radioactive beam of polarized $^8$Li has been used to observe the vortex lattice near the surface of superconducting NbSe$_2$. The inhomogeneous magnetic field distribution associated with the vortex lattice was measured using depth-resolved $β$-detected NMR. Below $T_c$ one observes the characteristic lineshape for a triangular vortex lattice which depends on the magnetic penetration depth and vortex core radius. The size of the vortex core varies strongly with magnetic field. In particular in a low field of 10.8 mT the core radius is much larger than the coherence length. The possible origin of these giant vortices is discussed.

Beta-NMR of Isolated Lithium in Nearly Ferromagnetic Palladium

The temperature dependence of the frequency shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate of isolated, nonmagnetic Li-8 impurities implanted in a nearly ferromagnetic host (Pd) are measured by means of beta-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (b-NMR). The shift is negative, very large and increases monotonically with decreasing T in proportion to the bulk susceptibility of Pd for T > T*~ 100 K. Below T*, an additional shift occurs which we attribute to the response of Pd to the defect. The relaxation rate is much slower than expected for the large shift and is linear with T below T*, showing no sign of additional relaxation mechanisms associated with the defect.

$β$-NMR of Isolated $^{8}$Li$^{+}$ Implanted into a Thin Copper Film

Depth-controlled $β$-NMR was used to study highly spin-polarized $^8$Li in a Cu film of thickness 100 nm deposited onto a MgO substrate. The positive Knight Shifts and spin relaxation data show that $^8$Li occupies two sites at low temperatures, assigned to be the substitutional ($S$) and octahedral ($O$) interstitial sites. Between 50 to 100 K, there is a site change from $O$ to $S$. The temperature dependence of the Knight shifts and spin-lattice relaxation rates at high temperatures, i.e. when all the Li are in the $S$ site, is consistent with the Korringa Law for a simple metal.

Muon spin relaxation study of the magnetism in unilluminated Prussian Blue analogue photomagnets

We present longitudinal field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in the unilluminated state of the photo-sensitive molecular magnetic Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues M$_{1-2x}$Co$_{1+x}$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$\cdot z$ H$_2$O, where M=K and Rb with $x=0.4$ and $\simeq 0.17$, respectively. These results are compared to those obtained in the $x=0.5$ stoichiometric limit, Co$_{1.5}$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$\cdot 6$ H$_2$O, which is not photo-sensitive. We find evidence for correlation between the range of magnetic ordering and the value of $x$ in the unilluminated state which can be explained using a site percolation model.

Near-Surface Structural Phase Transition of SrTiO$_3$ Studied with Zero-Field $β$-Detected Nuclear Spin Relaxation and Resonance

We demonstrate that zero-field $β$-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance and spin relaxation of low energy $^8$Li can be used as a sensitive local probe of structural phase transitions near a surface. We find that the transition near the surface of a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal occurs at $T_c \sim 150$ K, i.e., 45 K higher than $T^{bulk}_c$, and that the tetragonal domains formed below $T_c$ are randomly oriented.

$β$-Detected NMR of $^8$Li in the Normal State of 2H-NbSe$_2$

$β$-NMR of isolated $^8$Li has been investigated in the normal state of 2H-NbSe$_2$. In a high magnetic field of 3T a single resonance is observed with a Gaussian line width of 3.5 kHz. The line shape varies weakly as function of magnetic field and temperature but has a strong orientation dependence. The nuclear electric quadrupole splitting is unresolved implying that the electric field gradients are 10-100 times smaller than in other non-cubic crystals. The nuclear spin relaxation rate is also anomalously small but varies linearly with temperature as expected for Korringa relaxation in a metal. These results suggest that Li adopts an interstitial position between the weakly coupled NbSe$_2$ layers and away from the conduction band.

Beta-Detected NQR in Zero Field with a Low Energy Beam of \nuc{8}{Li}$^+$

Beta-detected nuclear quadrupole resonances (\bnqr) at zero field are observed using a beam of low energy highly polarized radioactive \nuc{8}{Li}$^+$. The resonances were detected in SrTiO$_3$, Al$_2$O$_3$ and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ single crystals by monitoring the beta-decay anisotropy as a function of a small audio frequency magnetic field. The resonances show clearly that \nuc{8}{Li} occupies one site with non-cubic symmetry in SrTiO$_3, two in Al$_2$O$_3$ and three sites in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The resonance amplitude and width are surprisingly large compared to the values expected from transitions between the $|\pm 2> \leftrightarrow |\pm 1>$ spin states, indicating a significant mixing between the $|\pm m>$ quadrupolar split levels.

Magnetism in purple bronze Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$

Muon spin relaxation measurements around the 25 K metal-insulator transition in Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ elucidate a profound role of disorder as a possible mechanism for this transition. The relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and the muon Knight shift are incompatible with the transition to a SDW state and thus exclude it.
