Steady off-diagonal long-range order state in a half-filled dimerized Hubbard chain induced by a resonant pulsed field

We show that a resonant pulsed field can induce a steady superconducting state even in the deep Mott insulating phase of the dimerized Hubbard model. The superconductivity found here in the non-equilibrium steady state is due to the $η$-pairing mechanism, characterized by the existence of the off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO), and is absent in the ground-state phase diagram. The key of the scheme lies in the generation of the field-induced charge density wave (CDW) state that is from the valence bond solid. The dynamics of this state resides in the highly-excited subspace of dimerized Hubbard model and is dominated by a $η$-spin ferromagnetic model. The decay of such long-living excitation is suppressed because of energy conservation. We also develop a dynamical method to detect the ODLRO of the non-equilibrium steady state. Our finding demonstrates that the non-equilibrium many-body dynamics induced by the interplay between the resonant external field and electron-electron interaction is an alternative pathway to access a new exotic quantum state, and also provides an alternative mechanism for enhancing superconductivity.

Dynamic transition from insulating state to eta-pairing state in a composite non-Hermitian system

The dynamics of Hermitian many-body quantum systems has long been a challenging subject due to the complexity induced by the particle-particle interactions. In contrast, this difficulty may be avoided in a well-designed non-Hermitian system. The exceptional point (EP) in a non-Hermitian system admits a peculiar dynamics: the final state being a particular eigenstate, coalescing state. In this work, we study the dynamic transition from a trivial insulating state to an η-pairing state in a composite non-Hermitian Hubbard system. The system consists of two subsystems, A and B, which are connected by unidirectional hoppings. We show that the dynamic transition from an insulating state to an η-pairing state occurs by the probability flow from A to B: the initial state is prepared as an insulating state of A, while B is left empty. The final state is an η-pairing state in B but empty in A. Analytical analyses and numerical simulations show that the speed of relaxation of the off-diagonal long-range order pair state depends on the order of the EP, which is determined by the number of pairs and the fidelity of the scheme is immune to the irregularity of the lattice.

Signature of edge states in resonant wave scattering

Particle beam scattering is a conventional technique for detecting the nature of matter. We studied the scattering problem of a cluster connected to multiple leads. We established the connection between the eigenstate of the topological scattering center and the transmission and reflection amplitudes for the resonant scattering process. We discovered that as an application, this approach enables the detection of the edge state in the band gap for both Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems and the identification of the topology of a system. We investigated two types of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains as examples. In addition, we proposed a dynamic scheme through an evanescently coupled-waveguide array to detect the edge state on the basis of measured transmission intensity. Numerical simulation revealed that pattern visibility can be the signature of the edge states.

Building ground states of Hubbard model by time-ordered bound-pair injection

According to energy band theory, ground states of a normal conductor and insulator can be obtained by filling electrons individually into energy levels, without any restrictions. It fails when the electron-electron correlation is taken into account. In this work, we investigate the dynamic process of building ground states of a Hubbard model. It is based on time-ordered quantum quenches for unidirectional hopping across a central and an auxiliary Hubbard model. We find that there exists a set of optimal parameters (chemical potentials and pair binding energy) for the auxiliary system, which takes the role of electron-pair reservoir. The exceptional point dynamics in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics allows the perfect transfer of electron pair from the reservoir to the central system, obtaining its ground states at different fillings. The dynamics of time-ordered pair-filling not only provides a method for correlated quantum state engineering, but also reveals the feature of the ground state in an alternative way.

Topologically protected two-fluid edge states

Edge states reveal the nontrivial topology of energy band in the bulk. As localized states at boundaries, many-body edge states may obey a special symmetry that is broken in the bulk. When local particle-particle interaction is induced, they may support a particular property. We consider an extended two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hubbard model and examine the appearance of $η$-pairing states, which are excited eigenstates related to superconductivity. In the absence of Hubbard interaction, the energy band is characterized by topologically invariant polarization in association with edge states. In the presence of on-site Hubbard interaction, $η$-pairing edge states appear in the topologically nontrivial phase, resulting in the condensation of pairs at the boundary. In addition, as Hamiltonian eigenstates, the edge states contain paired fermions and unpaired fermions. Neither affects the other; they act as two-fluid states. From numerical simulations of many-body scattering processes, a clear manifestation and experimental detection scheme of topologically protected two-fluid edge states are provided.

Two-dimensional anisotropic non-Hermitian Lieb lattice

We study an anisotropic two-dimensional non-Hermitian Lieb lattice, where the staggered gain and loss present in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The intra-cell nonreciprocal coupling generates magnetic flux enclosed in the unit cell of the Lieb lattice and creates nontrivial topology. The active and dissipative topological edge states are along the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. The two-dimensional non-Hermitian Lieb lattice also supports passive topological corner state. At appropriate magnetic flux, the non-Hermiticity can alter the corner state from one corner to the opposite corner as the non-Hermiticity increases. The gapless phase of the Lieb lattice is characterized by different configurations of exceptional points in the Brillouin zone. The topology of the anisotropic non-Hermitian Lieb lattices can be verified in many experimental platforms including the optical waveguide lattices, photonic crystals, and electronic circuits.

Time-reversal symmetric topological metal

Topological metals possess gapless band structures accompanied with nontrivial edge states. Topological metals are created from the topological insulators by adjusting the magnetic flux. Here we propose the time-reversal symmetry protected topological metal without employing the magnetic flux. Topological metallic phase presents although the Chern number vanishes. In the topologically nontrivial phase, three different cases in the metallic phase are distinguished from the band-touching and in-gap features of the topological edge states. These findings shed light on the time-reversal symmetric topological metals and greatly simplify the realization of topological metals.

Field induced conducting state in Mott insulator

Electron--electron repulsion, on the one hand, can result in bound pair, which has heavy effective mass. On the other hand, it is also the cause of Mott insulator. We study the effect of a staggered magnetic field on a Hubbard model. We find that a bound pair with large energy bandwidth can be formed under the resonant staggered field, being the half of Hubbard repulsion strength. Accordingly, the system exhibits following dynamical behaviors: (i) When an electric field is applied, fast bound pair Bloch oscillation occurs, while a single electron is frozen. (ii) When a quenching resonant field is applied to an initial antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state, the final state becomes doublon conducting state manifested by the non-zero $η$ correlator and large charge fluctuation. Our finding indicates that the cooperation of electron-electron correlation and modulated external field can induce novel quench dynamics.

Transition from degeneracy to coalescence: theorem and applications

Exceptional point (EP) is exclusive for non-Hermitian system and distinct from that at a degeneracy point (DP), supporting intriguing dynamics, which can be utilized to probe quantum phase transition and prepare eigenstates in a Hermitian many-body system. In this work, we investigate the transition from DP for a Hermitian system to EP driven by non-Hermitian terms. We present a theorem on the existence of transition between DP and EP for a general system. The obtained EP is robust to the strength of non-Hermitian terms. We illustrate the theorem by an exactly solvable quasi-one-dimensional model, which allows the existence of transition between fully degeneracy and exceptional spectra driven by non-Hermitian tunnelings in real and k spaces, respectively. We also study the EP dynamics for generating coalescing edge modes in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-like models. This finding reveals the ubiquitous connection between DP and EP.

Probing the superfluid-insulator phase transition by a non-Hermitian external field

We study the response of a thermal state of the Hubbard-like system to either global or local non-Hermitian perturbation, which coalesces the degenerate ground state within the $U(1)$ symmetry breaking phase. We show that the dynamical response of the system is strongly sensitive to the underlying quantum phase transition (QPT) from a Mott insulator to a superfluid state. The Uhlmann fidelity in the superfluid phase decays to a steady value determined by the order of the exceptional point (EP) within the subspace spanned by the degenerate ground states but remains almost unchanged in the Mott insulating phase. It demonstrates that the phase diagram at zero temperature is preserved even though a local probing field is applied. Specifically, two celebrated models including the Bose-Hubbard model and the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model are employed to demonstrate this property in the finite-size system, wherein fluctuations of the boson and polariton number are observed based on EP dynamics. This work presents an alternative approach to probe the superfluid-insulator QPT at non-zero temperature.

Flat band and $η$-pairing states in one-dimensional Moiré Hubbard model

A moiré system is formed when two periodic structures have a slightly mismatched period, resulting in unusual strongly correlated states in the presence of particle-particle interactions. The periodic structures can arise from the intrinsic crystalline order and periodic external field. We investigate a one-dimensional Hubbard models with periodic on-site potential of period $n_{0}$, which is commensurate to the lattice constant. For large $% n_{0}$, exact solution demonstrates that there is a midgap flat band with zero energy in the absence of Hubbard interaction. Each moiré unit cell contributes two zero energy levels to the flat band. In the presence of Hubbard interaction, the midgap physics is demonstrated to be well described by a uniform Hubbard chain, in which the effective hopping and on-site interaction strength, can be controlled by the amplitude and period of the external field. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the correlated behaviors in the finite-sized moiré Hubbard system, including the existence of $η$-pairing state, and bound pair oscillation. This finding provides a method to enhance the correlated effect by a spatially periodic external field.

Topology of anti-parity-time-symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

We propose an anti-parity-time (anti-PT ) symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, where the large non-Hermiticity constructively creates nontrivial topology and greatly expands the topological phase. In the anti-PT -symmetric SSH model, the gain and loss are alternatively arranged in pairs under the inversion symmetry. The appearance of degenerate point at the center of the Brillouin zone determines the topological phase transition, while the exceptional points unaffect the band topology. The large non-Hermiticity leads to unbalanced wavefunction distribution in the broken anti-PT -symmetric phase and induces the nontrivial topology. Our findings can be verified through introducing dissipations in every another two sites of the standard SSH model even in its trivial phase, where the nontrivial topology is solely induced by the dissipations.

Quantum Phase Transition in a Quantum Ising Chain at Nonzero Temperatures

We study the response of a thermal state of an Ising chain to a nonlocal non-Hermitian perturbation, which coalesces the topological Kramer-like degeneracy in the ferromagnetic phase. The dynamic responses for initial thermal states in different quantum phases are distinct. The final state always approaches its half component with a fixed parity in the ferromagnetic phase but remains almost unchanged in the paramagnetic phase. This indicates that the phase diagram at zero temperature is completely preserved at finite temperatures. Numerical simulations for Loschmidt echoes demonstrate such dynamical behaviors in finite-size systems. In addition, it provides a clear manifestation of the bulk-boundary correspondence at nonzero temperatures. This work presents an alternative approach to understanding the quantum phase transitions of quantum spin systems at nonzero temperatures.

Symmetry-Protected Scattering in Non-Hermitian Linear Systems

Symmetry plays fundamental role in physics and the nature of symmetry changes in non-Hermitian physics. Here the symmetry-protected scattering in non-Hermitian linear systems is investigated by employing the discrete symmetries that classify the random matrices. The even-parity symmetries impose strict constraints on the scattering coefficients: the time-reversal (C and K) symmetries protect the symmetric transmission or reflection; the pseudo-Hermiticity (Q symmetry) or the inversion (P) symmetry protects the symmetric transmission and reflection. For the inversion-combined time-reversal symmetries, the symmetric features on the transmission and reflection interchange. The odd-parity symmetries including the particle-hole symmetry, chiral symmetry, and sublattice symmetry cannot ensure the scattering to be symmetric. These guiding principles are valid for both Hermitian and non-Hermitian linear systems. Our findings provide fundamental insights into symmetry and scattering ranging from condensed matter physics to quantum physics and optics.

Quantum mold casting for topological insulating and edge states

We study the possibility of transferring fermions from a trivial system as particle source to an empty system but at topological phase as a mold for casting a stable topological insulator dynamically. We show that this can be realized by a non-Hermitian unidirectional hopping, which connects a central system at topological phase and a trivial flat-band system with a periodic driving chemical potential, which scans over the valence band of the central system. The near exceptional-point dynamics allows a unidirectional dynamical process: the time evolution from an initial state with full-filled source system to a stable topological insulating state approximately. The result is demonstrated numerically by a source-assistant QWZ model and SSH chain in the presence of random perturbation. Our finding reveals a classical analogy of quench dynamics in quantum matter and provides a way for topological quantum state engineering.

$η$-pairing ground states in the non-Hermitian Hubbard model

The introduction of non-Hermiticity has greatly enriched the research field of traditional condensed matter physics, and eventually led to a series of discoveries of exotic phenomena. We investigate the effect of non-Hermitian imaginary hoppings on the attractive Hubbard model. The exact bound-pair solution shows that the electron-electron correlation suppresses the non-Hermiticity, resulting in off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) ground state. In a large negative $U $ limit, the ODLRO ground state corresponds to $η$-spin ferromagnetic states. We also study the system with mixed hopping configuration. The numerical result indicates the existence of the transition from normal to $η$-pairing ground states by increasing the imaginary hopping strength. Our results provide a promising approach for the non-Hermitian strongly correlated system.

Projectively topological exceptional points in non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model

We study coupled non-Hermitian Rice-Mele chains, which consist of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain system with staggered on-site imaginary potentials. In two dimensional (2D) thermodynamic limit, the exceptional points (EPs) are shown to exhibit topological feature: EPs correspond to topological defects of a real auxiliary 2D vector field in k space, which is obtained from the Bloch states of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. As a topological invariant, the topological charges of EPs can be $\pm$1/2, obtained by the winding number calculation. Remarkably, we find that such a topological characterization remains for a finite number of coupled chains, even a single chain, in which the momentum in one direction is discrete. It shows that the EPs in the quasi-1D system still exhibit topological characteristics and can be an abridged version for a 2D system with symmetry protected EPs that are robust in perturbations, which proves that topological invariants for a quasi-1D system can be extracted from the projection of the corresponding 2D limit system on it.

Iterative Retina for high track multiplicity in a barrel-shape tracker and high magnetic field

Real-time track tracking in high energy physics experiments at colliders running at high luminosity is very challenging for trigger systems. To perform pattern-recognition and track fitting in online trigger system, the artificial Retina algorithm has been introduced in the field. Retina can be implemented in the state of the art FPGA devices. Our developments use Retina in an iterative way to identify track for barrel-shape tracker embedded in a high magnetic field and with high track multiplicity. As a benchmark we simulate LHC t-tbar events, with a pile-up of 200 and a GEANT-4 based simulation of a 6-layers barrel tracker detector made of silicon modules. With this sample the performance of the hardware design (resource usage, latency) is evaluated. Both efficiency and purity of the Retina fitting are over 90%. Moreover we have also added a Kalman filter after the Retina fit to improve the resolution on the track parameters. Our simulation results show that the Kalman filter can work well together with the Retina algorithm to find track through t-tbar event and provides high resolutions of the reconstructed parameters.
