Resonant-amplified and invisible Bragg scattering based on spin coalescing modes

Unlike a real magnetic field, which separates the energy levels of particle with opposite spin polarization, a complex field can lead to a special kind of spectral degeneracy, known as exceptional point (EP), at which two spin eigenmodes coalesce. It allows an EP impurity to be an invisible scattering center for a fermion with the resonant spin polarization, but an amplifying emitter for opposite polarization. We show that a pair of conjugate EP modes supports resonant mutual stimulation, acting as a resonant amplifier based on the underlying mechanism of positive-feedback loop. Together with other Hermitian eigenmodes, a fermion with EP polarization exhibits some exclusive dynamics, referred to as EP dynamics. We construct several typical superlattices, which are built up by embedding EP-impurity arrays in a Hermitian two-dimensional square lattice. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate resonant amplification and invisibility of Bragg scattering.

Dynamical preparation of a steady ODLRO state in the Hubbard model with local non-Hermitian impurity

The cooperation between non-Hermiticity and interaction brings about a lot of counterintuitive behaviors, which are impossible to exist in the framework of the Hermitian system. We study the effect of a non-Hermitian impurity on the Hubbard model in the context of $η$ symmetry. We show that the non-Hermitian Hubbard Hamiltonian can respect a full real spectrum even if a local non-Hermitian impurity is applied to. The balance between dissipation of single fermion and on-site pair fluctuation results in a highest-order coalescing state with off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO). Based on the characteristic of High-order EP, the critical non-Hermitian Hubbard model allows the generation of such a steady superconducting-like state through the time evolution from an arbitrary initial state, including the vacuum state. Remarkably, this dynamic scheme is insensitive to the on-site interaction and entirely independent of the locations of particle dissipation and pair fluctuation. Our results lay the groundwork for the dynamical generation of a steady ODLRO state through the critical non-Hermitian strongly correlated system.

Dynamic crystallization in a quantum Ising chain

The topological degeneracy of ground states in transverse field Ising chain cannot be removed by local perturbation and allows it to be a promising candidate for topological computation. We study the dynamic processes of crystallization and dissolution for the gapped ground states in an Ising chain. For this purpose, the real-space renormalization method is employed to build an effective Hamiltonian that captures the low-energy physics of a given system. We show that the ground state and the first-excited state of an $ \left( N+1\right) $-site chain can be generated from that of the $N$-site one by adding a spin adiabatically and vice versa. Numerical simulation shows that the robust quasidegenerate ground states of finite-size chain can be prepared with high fidelity from a set of noninteracting spins by a quasiadiabatic process. As an application, we propose a scheme for entanglement transfer between a pair of spins and two separable Ising chains as macroscopic topological qubits.

Biot-Savart law in quantum matter

We study the topological nature of a class of lattice systems, whose Bloch vector can be expressed as the difference of two independent periodic vector functions (knots) in an auxiliary space. We show exactly that each loop as a degeneracy line generates a polarization field, obeying the Biot-Savart law: The degeneracy line acts as a current-carrying wire, while the polarization field corresponds to the generated magnetic field. Applying the Ampere's circuital law on a nontrivial topological system, we find that two Bloch knots entangle with each other, forming a link with the linking number being the value of Chern number of the energy band. In addition, two lattice models, an extended QWZ model and a quasi-1D model with magnetic flux, are proposed to exemplify the application of our approach. In the aid of the Biot-Savart law, the pumping charge as a dynamic measure of Chern number is obtained numerically from quasi-adiabatic processes.

Untying links through anti-parity-time-symmetric coupling

We reveal how the vector field links are untied under the influence of anti-parity-time-symmetric couplings in a dissipative sublattice-symmetric topological photonic crystal lattice. The topology of the quasi-one-dimensional two-band system is encoded in the geometric topology of the vector fields associated with the Bloch Hamiltonian. The linked vector fields reflect the topology of the nontrivial phase. The topological phase transition occurs concomitantly with the untying of the vector field link at the exceptional points. Counterintuitively, more dissipation constructively creates a nontrivial topology. The linking number predicts the number of topological photonic zero modes.

Ising chain with topological degeneracy induced by dissipation

The ground-state degeneracy of the quantum spin system is a characteristic of nontrivial topology, when it is gapped and robust against disordered perturbation. The corresponding quantum phase transition (QPT) is usually driven by a real parameter. We study a non-Hermitian Ising chain with two transverse fields, one real and another imaginary, based on the exact solution and numerical simulation. We show that topological degeneracy still exists and can be obtained by an imaginary transverse field from a topologically trivial phase of a Hermitian system. The topological degeneracy is robust against the random imaginary field and therefore expected to be immune to disordered dissipation from the spontaneous decay in experiment. The underlying mechanism is the nonlocal symmetry, which emerges only in thermodynamic limit and relates two categories of QPTs in the quantum spin system, rooted from topological order and symmetry breaking, respectively.

Dynamic magnetization in non-Hermitian quantum spin system

We report a global effect induced by the local complex field, associated with the spin-exchange interaction. High-order exceptional point up to ($N+1$)-level coalescence is created at the critical local complex field applied to the $N$-size quantum spin chain. The ($N+1$)-order coalescent level is a saturated ferromagnetic ground state in the isotropic spin system. Remarkably, the final state always approaches the ground state for an arbitrary initial state with any number of spin flips; even if the initial state is orthogonal to the ground state. Furthermore, the switch of macroscopic magnetization is solely driven by the time and forms a hysteresis loop in the time domain. The retentivity and coercivity of the hysteresis loop mainly rely on the non-Hermiticity. Our findings highlight the cooperation of non-Hermiticity and the interaction in quantum spin system, suggest a dynamical framework to realize magnetization, and thus pave the way for the non-Hermitian quantum spin system.

Ultrafast Control of Excitonic Rashba Fine Structure by Phonon Coherences in a Metal Halide Perovskite CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$

We discover hidden Rashba fine structure in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and demonstrate its quantum control by vibrational coherence through symmetry-selective vibronic (electron-phonon) coupling. Above a critical threshold of a single-cycle terahertz pump field, a Raman phonon mode distinctly modulates the middle excitonic states with {\em persistent} coherence for more than ten times longer than the ones on two sides that predominately couple to infrared phonons. These vibronic quantum beats, together with first-principles modeling of phonon periodically modulated Rashba parameters, identify a {\em three-fold} excitonic fine structure splitting, i.e., optically-forbidden, degenerate dark states in between two bright ones. Harnessing of vibronic quantum coherence and symmetry inspires light-perovskite quantum control and sub-THz-cycle "Rashba engineering" of spin-split bands for ultimate multi-function device.

High-order exceptional points in supersymmetric arrays

We employ the intertwining operator technique to synthesize a supersymmetric (SUSY) array of arbitrary size $N$. The synthesized SUSY system is equivalent to a spin-$(N-1)/2$ under an effective magnetic field. By considering an additional imaginary magnetic field, we obtain a generalized parity-time-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that describes a SUSY array of coupled resonators or waveguides under a gradient gain and loss; all the $N$ energy levels coalesce at an exceptional point (EP), forming the isotropic high-order EP with $N$ states coalescence (EPN). Near the EPN, the scaling exponent of phase rigidity for each eigenstate is $(N-1)/2$; the eigen frequency response to the perturbation $ε$ acting on the resonator or waveguide couplings is $ε^{1/N}$. Our findings reveal the importance of the intertwining operator technique for the spectral engineering and exemplify the practical application in non-Hermitian physics.

Coherent confinement and unidirectional dynamics of a wave packet induced by a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger segment

The competition between staggered imaginary potentials and lattice dimerization results in a unidirectional propagating coalescing state of a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ring at an exceptional point. A segment of the SSH ring inherits the unidirectional feature and exhibits some intriguing dynamic behaviors when it is embedded in a Hermitian chain as a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric scattering center. Based on the Bethe ansatz scattering solution for the interface between Hermitian and non-Hermitian regions, we show that the SSH scattering center supports the following wave-packet dynamics. (i) A left incident wave packet is allowed perfect transmission, while a right incident wave packet stimulates an amplified reflecting wave train with the length proportional to the size of the SSH segment. Accordingly, a unidirectional invisibility of Bragg scatterers is observed when a multi-SSH segment is considered. (ii) A left incident wave packet can be well confined in a SSH segment if the right lead is removed. (iii) In addition, a wave packet is perfectly absorbed when its size closes to the length of the SSH segment. The underlying mechanism stems from a subtle property of the SSH segment, which supports two quasicoalescing wave packets but with opposite group velocities. Our findings are applicable to the schemes of realizing quantum state storage, quantum diode, and lasing device.

Coherent Band-Edge Oscillations and Dynamic LO Phonon Mode Splitting as Evidence for Polaronic Coupling in Perovskites

The coherence of collective modes, such as phonons, and their modulation of the electronic states are long sought in complex systems, which is a cross-cutting issue in photovoltaics and quantum electronics. In photovoltaic cells and lasers based on metal halide perovskites, the presence of polaronic coupling, i.e., photocarriers dressed by the macroscopic motion of charged lattice, assisted by terahertz (THz) longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, has been intensely studied yet still debated. This may be key for explaining the remarkable properties of the perovskite materials, e.g., defect tolerance, long charge lifetimes and diffusion length. Here we use the intense single-cycle THz pulse with the peak electric field up to $E_{THz}=$1000\,kV/cm to drive coherent band-edge oscillations at room temperature in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. We reveal the oscillatory behavior dominantly to a specific quantized lattice vibration mode at $ω_{\mathrm{LO}}\sim$4 THz, being both dipole and momentum forbidden. THz-driven coherent dynamics exhibits distinguishing features: the room temperature coherent oscillations at $ω_{\mathrm{LO}}$ longer than 1 ps in both single crystals and thin films; the {\em mode-selective} modulation of different band edge states assisted by electron-phonon ($e$-$ph$) interaction; {\em dynamic mode splitting} controlled by temperature due to entropy and anharmonicity of organic cations. Our results demonstrate intense THz-driven coherent band-edge modulation as a powerful probe of electron-lattice coupling phenomena and provide compelling implications for polaron correlations in perovskites.

Hybrid exceptional point created from type III Dirac point

Degeneracy (exceptional) points embedded in energy band are distinct by their topological features. We report different hybrid two-state coalescences (EP2s) formed through merging two EP2s with opposite chiralities that created from the type III Dirac points emerging from a flat band. The band touching hybrid EP2, which is isolated, is induced by the destructive interference at the proper match between non-Hermiticity and synthetic magnetic flux. The degeneracy points and different types of exceptional points are distinguishable by their topological features of global geometric phase associated with the scaling exponent of phase rigidity. Our findings not only pave the way of merging EPs but also shed light on the future investigations of non-Hermitian topological phases.

Manifestation of a topological gapless phase in a two-dimensional chiral symmetric system through Loschmidt echo

Unlike the edge state of a topological insulator where its energy level lives in the bulk energy gap, the edge state of a topological semimetal hides in the bulk spectrum and is difficult to be identified by the energy. We investigate the sensitivity of bulk and edge states of the gapless phase for a topological semimetal to the disordered perturbation via a concrete two-dimensional chiral symmetric lattice model. The topological gapless phase is characterized by two opposite vortices in the momentum space and nonzero winding numbers, which correspond to the edge flatband when the open boundary condition is applied. For this system, numerical results reveal that a distinguishing feature is that the robustness of the edge states against weak disorder and the flatband edge modes remain locked at zero energy in the presence of weak chiral-symmetry-preserving disorder. We employ the Loschmidt echo (LE) for both bulk and edge states to study the dynamic effect of disordered perturbation. We show that, for an initial bulk state, the LE decays exponentially, whereas it converges to a constant for an initial edge state in the presence of weak disorder. Furthermore, the convergent LE can be utilized to identify the positions of vortices as well as the phase diagram. We discuss the realization of such dynamic investigations in a topological photonic system.

Resonant generation of $p$-wave Cooper pair in non-Hermitian Kitaev chain at exceptional point

We investigate a non-Hermitian extension of Kitaev chain by considering imaginary $p$-wave pairing amplitudes. The exact solution shows that the phase diagram consists two phases with real and complex \ Bogoliubov-de-gens spectra, associated with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking, which is separated by a hyperbolic exceptional line. The exceptional points (EPs) correspond to a specific Cooper pair state $( 1+c_{k}^{\dagger }c_{-k}^{\dagger }) \left\vert 0\right\rangle $\ with movable $k$ when the parameters vary along the exceptional line. The non-Hermiticity around EP supports resonant generation of such a pair state from the vacuum state $% \left\vert 0\right\rangle $ of fermions via the critical dynamic process. In addition, we propose a scheme to generate a superconducting state through a dynamic method.

Localization transitions and mobility edges in quasiperiodic ladder

We investigate localization properties in a two-coupled uniform chains with quasiperiodic modulation on interchain coupling strength. We demonstrate that this ladder is equivalent to a Aubry-Andre (AA) chain when two legs are symmetric. Analytical and numerical results indicate the appearance of mobility edges for asymmetric ladder. We also propose an easily engineered quasiperiodic ladder system which is a moiré superlattice system consisting of two-coupled uniform chains. An irrational lattice constant difference results in quasiperiodic structure. Numerical simulations show that such a system supports mobility edge. Additionally, we find that the mobility edge can be detected by a dynamic method, which bases on the measurement of surviving probability in the presence of a single imaginary negative potential as a leakage. The result provides insightful information about the localization transitions and mobility edge in experiment.

Moiré pattern of spin liquid and Neel magnet in a Kitaev chain

A moiré pattern occurs when two periodic structures in a system have a slight mismatch period, resulting the coexistence of distinct phases in different large-scale spacial regions of the same system. Two periodic structures can arise from periodic electric and magnetic fields, respectively. We investigated the moiré pattern via a dimerized Kitaev spin chain with a periodic transverse field, which can be mapped onto the system of dimerized spinless fermions with p-wave superconductivity. The exact solution for staggered field demonstrated that the ground state has two distinct phases: (i) Neel magnetic phase for nonzero field, (ii) Spin liquid phase due to the emergence of isolated flat Bogoliubov--de Gennes band for vanishing field. We computed the staggered magnetization and local density of states (\textrm{LDOS}) for the field with a slight difference period to the chain lattice. Numerical simulation demonstrated that such two phases appear alternatively along the chain with a long beat period. Additionally, we proposed a dynamic scheme to detect the Moiré fringes based on the measurement of Loschmidt echo (\textrm{LE}) in the presence of local perturbation.

Inversion symmetric non-Hermitian Chern insulator

We propose a two-dimensional non-Hermitian Chern insulator with inversion symmetry, which is anisotropic and has staggered gain and loss in both x and y directions. In this system, conventional bulk-boundary correspondence holds. The Chern number is a topological invariant that accurately predicts the topological phase transition and the existence of helical edge states in the topologically nontrivial gapped phase. In the gapless phase, the band touching points are isolated and protected by the symmetry. The degenerate points alter the system topology, and the exceptional points can destroy the existence of helical edge states. Topologically protected helical edge states exist in the gapless phase for the system under open boundary condition in one direction, which are predicted by the winding number associated with the vector field of average values of Pauli matrices. The winding number also identifies the detaching points between the edge states and the bulk states in the energy bands. The non-Hermiticity also supports a topological phase with zero Chern number, where a pair of in-gap helical edge states exists. Our findings provide insights into the symmetry protected non-Hermitian topological insulators.

Helical resonant transport and purified amplification at an exceptional point

We propose an application of a parity-time symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by embedded it in a two-dimensional square lattice tube. The coalescence state at the exceptional point of non-Hermitian SSH model is chiral and selectively controls helical transport and amplification. Two typical helicity-dependent scattering dynamics are observed. If the incidence has an identical helicity with the embedded non-Hermitian SSH model, we observe a perfect transmission without reflection. However, if the incidence has an opposite helicity with the embedded non-Hermitian SSH model, except for a full transmission, we observe an amplified transmission with different helicity from the incidence; but the amplified reflection has identical helicity with the incidence. These intriguing features are completely unexpected in Hermitian system. Moreover, the helical amplification at high efficiency can be triggered by an arbitrary excitation. The different dynamics between incidences with opposite helicities are results of unidirectional tunneling, which is revealed to be capable of realizing without introducing magnetic field. Our findings open a direction in all-optical device and provide perspectives in non-Hermitian transport.
