Anderson localization induced by complex potential

Uncorrelated disorder potential in one-dimensional lattice definitely induces Anderson localization, while quasiperiodic potential can lead to both localized and extended phases, depending on the potential strength. We investigate the Anderson localization in one-dimensional lattice with nonHermitian complex disorder and quasiperiodic potential. We present a non-Hermitian SSH chain to demonstrate that a nonzero imaginary disorder on-site potential can induce the standard Anderson localization. We also show that the non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre (AA) model exhibits a transition in parameter space, which separates the localization and delocalization phases and is determined by the self-duality of the model. It indicates that a pure imaginary quasiperiodic potential takes the same role as a real quasiperiodic potential in the transition point between localization and delocalization. Remarkably, a system with complex quasiperiodic potential exhibits interference-like pattern on the transition points.

Semi-localization transition driven by a single asymmetrical tunneling

A local impurity usually only strongly affects few single-particle energy levels, thus cannot induce a quantum phase transition (QPT), or any macroscopic quantum phenomena in a many-body system within the Hermitian regime. However, it may happen for a non-Hermitian impurity. We investigate the many-body ground state property of a one-dimensional tight-binding ring with an embedded single asymmetrical dimer based on exact solutions. We introduce the concept of semi-localization state to describe a new quantum phase, which is a crossover from extended to localized state. The peculiar feature is that the decay length is of the order of the system size, rather than fixed as a usual localized state. In addition, the spectral statistics is non-analytic as asymmetrical hopping strengths vary, resulting a sudden charge of the ground state. The distinguishing feature of such a QPT is that the density of ground state energy varies smoothly due to unbroken symmetry. However, there are other observables, such as the groundstate center of mass and average current, exhibit the behavior of second-order QPT. This behavior stems from time-reversal symmetry breaking of macroscopic number of single-particle eigen states.

Topological Phase Transition Independent of System Non-Hermiticity

Non-Hermiticity can vary the topology of system, induce topological phase transition, and even invalidate the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we show the introducing of non-Hermiticity without affecting the topological properties of the original chiral symmetric Hermitian systems. Conventional bulk-boundary correspondence holds, topological phase transition and the (non)existence of edge states are unchanged even though the energy bands are inseparable due to non-Hermitian phase transition. Chern number for energy bands of the generalized non-Hermitian system in two dimension is proved to be unchanged and favorably coincides with the simulated topological charge pumping. Our findings provide insights into the interplay between non-Hermiticity and topology. Topological phase transition independent of non-Hermitian phase transition is a unique feature that beneficial for future applications of non-Hermitian topological materials.

Knot Topology in Quantum Spin System

Knot theory provides a powerful tool for the understanding of topological matters in biology, chemistry, and physics. Here knot theory is introduced to describe topological phases in the quantum spin system. Exactly solvable models with long-range interactions are investigated, and Majorana modes of the quantum spin system are mapped into different knots and links. The topological properties of ground states of the spin system are visualized and characterized using crossing and linking numbers, which capture the geometric topologies of knots and links. The interactivity of energy bands is highlighted. In gapped phases, eigenstate curves are tangled and braided around each other forming links. In gapless phases, the tangled eigenstate curves may form knots. Our findings provide an alternative understanding of the phases in the quantum spin system, and provide insights into one-dimension topological phases of matter.

Non-Hermitian phase transition and eigenstate localization induced by asymmetric coupling

We investigate a uniformly coupled non-Hermitian system with asymmetric coupling amplitude. The asymmetric coupling equals to a symmetric coupling threaded by an imaginary gauge field. In a closed configuration, the imaginary gauge field leads to an imaginary magnetic flux, which induces a non-Hermitian phase transition. For an open boundary, the imaginary gauge field results in an eigenstate localization. The eigenstates under Dirac and biorthogonal norms and the scaling laws are quantitatively investigated to show the affect of asymmetric coupling induced one-way amplification. However, the imaginary magnetic flux does not inevitably induce the non-Hermitian phase transition for systems without translation invariance, this is elucidated from the non-Hermitian phase transition in the non-Hermitian ring with a single coupling defect. Our findings provide insights into the non-Hermitian phase transition and one-way localization.

Robustness of the pumping charge to dynamic disorder

We investigate the effect of disorder on a gapped crystalline system by introducing a class of local quantities for an energy band, which is referred as to band correlation function (BCF) and is the sum of correlation functions for all eigenstates of the band. We show that the BCFs are robust in the presence of disorder if the band gap is not collapse. The eigenstate set of an energy band can be almost completely mapped onto the perturbated eigenstate set, referred as to quasi-closed mapping, when it is sufficiently isolated from other bands. Some features relate to translational symmetry may emerge in a randomly perturbed system. We demonstrate this by simulating numerically the pumping process for a 1D Rice-Mele (RM) model with disorders on the hopping strength and on-site potential. It is shown that the quantized pumping charge is robust against with the dynamic disorder. This result indicates the possibility of measuring the topological invariant in experimental system with imperfection.

Visualizing Topology of Real-Energy Gapless Phase Arising from Exceptional Point

The discovery of novel topological phase advances our knowledge of nature and stimulates the development of applications. In non-Hermitian topological systems, the topology of band touching exceptional points is very important. Here we propose a real-energy topological gapless phase arising from exceptional points in one dimension, which has identical topological invariants as the topological gapless phase arising from degeneracy points. We develop a graphic approach to characterize the topological phases, where the eigenstates of energy bands are mapped to the graphs on a torus. The topologies of different phases are visualized and distinguishable; and the topological gapless edge state with amplification appropriate for topological lasing exists in the nontrivial phase. These results are elucidated through a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger ladder. Our findings open new way for identifying topology phase of matter from visualizing the eigenstates.

Quantum transport in non-Hermitian impurity array

We study the formation of band gap bound states induced by a non-Hermitian impurity embedded in a Hermitian system. We show that a pair of bound states emerges inside the band gap when a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) imaginary potential is added in a strongly coupled bilayer lattices and the bound states become strongly localized when the system approaches to the exceptional point (EP). As a direct consequence of such $\mathcal{PT}$ impurity-induced bound states, an impurity array can be constructed and protected by energy gap. The effective Hamiltonian of the impurity array is non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) type and hosts Dirac probability-preserving dynamics. We demonstrate the conclusion by numerical simulations for the quantum transport of wave packet in right-angle bends waveguide and $Y$-beam splitter. Our finding provides alternative way to fabricate quantum device by non-Hermitian impurity.

Symmetry protected topological phases characterized by isolated exceptional points

Exceptional point (EP) associated with eigenstates coalescence in non-Hermitian systems has many exotic features. The EPs are generally sensitive to system parameters, here we report symmetry protected isolated EPs in the Brillouin zone (BZ) of a two-dimensional non-Hermitian bilayer square lattice; protected by symmetry, the isolated EPs only move, merge, and split in the BZ. The average values of Pauli matrices under the eigenstate of system Bloch Hamiltonian define a real planar vector field, the topological defects of which are isolated EPs associated with vortices. The winding number characterizes the vortices and reveals the topological properties of the non- Hermitian system. Different topological phases correspond to different EP configurations, which are unchanged unless topological phase transition occurs accompanying with the EPs merging or splitting.

Bulk-Boundary Correspondence in a Non-Hermitian System in One Dimension with Chiral-Inversion Symmetry

Asymmetric coupling amplitudes effectively create an imaginary gauge field, which induces a non-Hermitian Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect. Nonzero imaginary magnetic flux invalidates the bulk-boundary correspondence and leads to a topological phase transition. However, the way of non-Hermiticity appearance may alter the system topology. By alternatively introducing the non-Hermiticity under symmetry to prevent nonzero imaginary magnetic flux, the bulk-boundary correspondence recovers and every bulk state becomes extended; the bulk topology of Bloch Hamiltonian predicts the (non)existence of edge states and topological phase transition. These are elucidated in a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, where chiral-inversion symmetry ensures the vanishing of imaginary magnetic flux. The average value of Pauli matrices under the eigenstate of chiral-inversion symmetric Bloch Hamiltonian defines a vector field, the vorticity of topological defects in the vector field is a topological invariant. Our findings are applicable in other non-Hermitian systems. We first uncover the roles played by non-Hermitian AB effect and chiral-inversion symmetry for the breakdown and recovery of bulk-boundary correspondence, and develop new insights for understanding non-Hermitian topological phases of matter.

Incident Direction Independent Wave Propagation and Unidirectional Lasing

We propose an incident direction independent wave propagation generated by properly assembling different unidirectional destructive interferences (UDIs), which is a consequence of the appropriate match between synthetic magnetic fluxes and the incident wave vector. Single-direction lasing at spectral singularity is feasible without introducing nonlinearity. UDI allows unidirectional lasing and unidirectional perfect absorption; when they are combined in a parity-time symmetric manner, the spectral singularities vanish with bounded reflections and transmissions. Furthermore, the simultaneous unidirectional lasing and perfect absorption for incidences from opposite directions is created. Our findings provide insights into light control and may shed light on the explorations of desirable functionality in fundamental research and practical applications.

Maximal distant entanglement in Kitaev tube

We study the Kitaev model on a finite-size square lattice with periodic boundary conditions in one direction and open boundary conditions in the other. Based on the fact that the Majorana representation of Kitaev model is equivalent to a brick wall model under the condition $t=Δ=μ$, this system is shown to support perfect Majorana bound states which is in strong localization limit. By introducing edge-mode fermionic operator and pseudo-spin representation, we find that such edge modes are always associated with maximal entanglement between two edges of the tube, which is independent of the size of the system.

Exceptional point induced lasing dynamics in a non-Hermitian system

Non-Hermitian systems exhibit many peculiar dynamic behaviors which never showed up in Hermitian systems. The existence of spectral singularity (SS) for a non-Hermitian scattering center provides a lasing mechanism in the context of quantum mechanics. In this paper we show exactly that a finite system at exceptional point (EP) can also provide an alternative laser solution. We investigate the dynamics of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model around EP, based on the analysis of parity-time (PT ) and chiral-time (CT ) symmetries of the Hamiltonian. In contrast to the SS lasing mechanism for an infinite system, such an SSH chain acts as an active laser medium at threshold, within which a stationary particle emission can be fired anywhere, rather than a specific location at the non-Hermitian scattering center only. In addition, some relevant peculiar phenomena arising from interference between wave packets are revealed based on the analytical solutions.

Partial topological Zak phase and dynamical confinement in non-Hermitian bipartite system

Unlike a Chern number in $2$D and $3$D topological system, Zak phase takes a subtle role to characterize the topological phase in $1$D. On the one hand, it is not a gauge invariant, on the other hand, the Zak phase difference between two quantum phases can be used to identify the topological phase transitions. A non-Hermitian system may inherit some characters of a Hermitian system, such as entirely real spectrum, unitary evolution, topological energy band, etc. In this paper, we study the influence of non-Hermitian term on the Zak phase for a class of non-Hermitian systems. We show exactly that the real part of the Zak phase remains unchanged in a bipartite lattice. In a concrete example, $1$D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, we find that the real part of Zak phase can be obtained by an adiabatic process. To demonstrate this finding, we investigate a scattering problem for a time-dependent scattering center, which is a magnetic-flux-driven non-Hermitian SSH ring. Owing to the nature of the Zak phase, the intriguing features of this design are the wave-vector independence and allow two distinct behaviors, perfect transmission or confinement, depending on the timing of a flux impulse threading the ring. When the flux is added during a wavepacket travelling within the ring, the wavepacket is confined in the scatter partially. Otherwise, it exhibits perfect transmission through the scatter. Our finding extends the understanding and broaden the possible application of geometric phase in a non-Hermitian system.

Classical correspondence of the exceptional points in the finite non-Hermitian system

We systematically study the topology of the exceptional point (EP) in the finite non-Hermitian system. Based on the concrete form of the Berry connection, we demonstrate that the exceptional line (EL), at which the eigenstates coalesce, can act as a vortex filament. The direction of the EL can be identified by the corresponding Berry curvature. In this context, such a correspondence makes the topology of the EL clear at a glance. As an example, we apply this finding to the non-Hermitian Rice-Mele (RM) model, the non-Hermiticity of which arises from the staggered on-site complex potential. The boundary ELs are topological, but the non-boundary ELs are not. Each non-boundary EL corresponds to two critical momenta that make opposite contributions to the Berry connection. Therefore, the Berry connection of the many-particle quantum state can have classical correspondence, which is determined merely by the boundary ELs. Furthermore, the non-zero Berry phase, which experiences a closed path in the parameter space, is dependent on how the curve surrounds the boundary EL. This also provides an alternative way to investigate the topology of the EP and its physical correspondence in a finite non-Hermitian system.

Dynamical signature of moire pattern in non-Hermitian ladder

We study the dynamical behavior of a non-Hermitian moire superlattice system, which consists of two-coupled SSH chains with staggered imaginary on-site potentials. There are two main spatial regions, in which systems are in unbroken symmetric phases with fully real spectrum, appearing periodically along the ladder. We show that the two quantum phases are dimerized and tetramerized, which determine the distinct dynamical behaviors. Dirac probability can oscillate periodically, increase quadratically and increase exponentially, which correspond to the unbroken phase, exceptional point and the broken phase of the tetramerized region. In comparison, the Dirac probability can exhibit high-frequency oscillation in the dimerized region. These phenomena demonstrate the dynamical signature and provide insightful information of the moire pattern in the non-Hermitian regime.

Dynamical topological invariant for non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model

We study a non-Hermitian Rice-Mele model without breaking time-reversal symmetry, with the non-Hermiticity arising from imbalanced hopping rates. The Berry connection, Berry curvature and Chern number are introduced in the context of biorthonormal inner product. It is shown that for a bulk system, although the Berry connection can be complex numbers, the Chern number is still quantized, as topological invariant. For an opened chain system, the mid-gap edge modes are obtained exactly, obeying the bulk-edge correspondence. Furthermore, we also introduce a local current in the context of biorthonormal inner product to measure the pumping charge generated by a cyclic adiabatic evolution. Analytical analysis and numerical simulation of the time evolution of the mid-gap states show that the pumping charge can be a dynamical topological invariant in correspondence with the Chern number. It indicates that the geometric concepts for Hermitian topological insulator can be extended to the non-Hermitian regime.

Simple harmonic oscillation in non-Hermitian SSH chain at exceptional point

The balance of gain and loss in an open system may maintain certain Hermitian dynamical behaviors, which can be hardly observed in a popular Hermitian system. In this paper, we systematically study a 1D PT -symmetry non-Hermitian SSH model with open boundary condition based on exact approximate solution. We show that the long-wave length standing-wave modes can be achieved within the linear dispersion region when the system is tuned at the exceptional point (EP). The whole Hilbert space can be decomposed into two quasi-Hermitian subspaces, which are consisted of positive and negative energy levels, respectively. Within each subspace, the system maintains all the features of a Hermitian one. We construct a coherent-like state in a subspace and find that it exhibits perfect simple harmonic motion (SHM). In contrast to a canonical coherent state, the shape of the wavepacket deforms periodically rather than entirely translation. And the amplitude of the SHM is not determined by the initial condition but the shape of the wavepacket. Our result indicates that novel Hermitian dynamics can be realized by a non-Hermitian system.
