Photo-induced new metastable state with modulated Josephson coupling strengths in Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$

Photoexcitations on a superconductor using ultrafast nir-infrared (NIR) pulses, whose energy is much higher than the superconducting energy gap, are expected to suppress/destroy superconductivity by breaking Cooper pairs and excite quasiparticles from occupied state to unoccupied state far above the Fermi level. This appears to be true only for small pumping fluence. Here we show that the intense NIR pumping has different effect. We perform an intense NIR pump, c-axis terahertz probe measurement on an electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=22 K. The measurement indicates that, instead of destroying superconductivity or exciting quasiparticles, the intense NIR pump drives the system from an equilibrium superconducting state with uniform Josephson coupling strength to a new metastable superconducting phase with modulated Josephson coupling strengths below T$_c$.

Light induced sub-picosecond topological phase transition in MoTe2

Recent development of ultrashort laser pulses allows for optical control of structural and electronic properties of complex quantum materials. The layered transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe2, which can crystalize into several different structures with distinct topological and electronic properties, provides possibilities to control or switch between different phases. In this study we report a photo-induced sub-picosecond structural transition between the type-II Weyl semimetal phase and normal semimetal phase in bulk crystalline MoTe2 by using ultrafast pump-probe and time-resolved second harmonic generation spectroscopy. The phase transition is most clearly characterized by the dramatic change of the shear oscillation mode and the intensity loss of second harmonic generation. This work opens up new possibilities for ultrafast manipulation of the topological properties of solids, enabling potentially practical applications for topological switch device with ultrafast excitations.

Light-induced new collective modes in La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$ superconductor

We report near and mid-infrared pump c-axis terahertz probe measurement on a superconducting single crystal La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=32 K. The measurement reveals that the pump-induced change occurs predominantly at the Josephson plasma edge position below T$_c$. Upon excited by the strong near-infrared pulses, the superconducting state is severely disturbed and incoherent quasiparticle excitations develop in frequency regime above the static plasma edge. However, within very short time delay ($\sim$1.5 ps) we observe the reappearance of a very sharp Josephson plasma edge at frequency lower than the static Josephson plasma edge and the emergence of a new light-induced Josephson mode at higher energy. The results imply that the light can induce new Josephson couplings with different coupling strengths. Similar but weaker effect is observed for the mid-infrared pump. No pump induced effect is detected above T$_c$.

Tunable near- to mid-infrared pump terahertz probe spectroscopy in reflection geometry

Strong-field mid-infrared pump--terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy has been proven as a powerful tool for light control of different orders in strongly correlated materials. We report the construction of an ultrafast broadband infrared pump--THz probe system in reflection geometry. A two-output optical parametric amplifier is used for generating mid-infrared pulses with GaSe as the nonlinear crystal. The setup is capable of pumping bulk materials at wavelengths ranging from 1.2 $μ$m to 15 $μ$m and beyond, and detecting the subtle, transient photoinduced changes in the reflected electric field of the THz probe at different temperatures. As a demonstration, we present 15 $μ$m pump--THz probe measurements of a bulk EuSbTe$_{3}$ single crystal. A $0.5\%$ transient change in the reflected THz electric field can be clearly resolved. The widely tuned pumping energy could be used in mode-selective excitation experiments and applied to many strongly correlated electron systems.

Verification of particle simulation of radio frequency waves in fusion plasmas

Radio frequency (RF) waves can provide heating, current and flow drive, as well as instability control for steady state operations of fusion experiments. A particle simulation model has been developed in this work to provide a first-principles tool for studying the RF nonlinear interactions with plasmas. In this model, ions are considered as fully kinetic particles using the Vlasov equation and electrons are treated as guiding centers using the drift kinetic equation. This model has been implemented in a global gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC) using real electron-to-ion mass ratio. To verify the model, linear simulations of ion plasma oscillation, ion Bernstein wave, and lower hybrid wave are carried out in cylindrical geometry and found to agree well with analytic predictions.

Nonlinear electromagnetic formulation for particle simulation of lower hybrid waves in toroidal geometry

Electromagnetic particle simulation model has been formulated and verified for nonlinear processes of lower hybrid (LH) waves in fusion plasmas. Electron dynamics is described by the drift kinetic equation using either kinetic momentum or canonical momentum. Ion dynamics is treated as the fluid system or by the Vlasov equation. Compressible magnetic perturbation is retained to simulate both the fast and slow LH waves. Numerical properties are greatly improved by using electron continuity equation to enforce consistency between electrostatic potential and vector potential, and by using the importance sampling technique. The simulation model has been implemented in the gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC), and verified for the dispersion relation and nonlinear particle trapping of the electromagnetic LH waves.

Particle simulation of lower hybrid waves in tokamak plasmas

Global particle simulations of the lower hybrid waves have been carried out using fully kinetic ions and drift kinetic electrons with a realistic electron-to-ion mass ratio. The lower hybrid wave frequency, mode structure, and electron Landau damping from the electrostatic simulations agree very well with the analytic theory. Linear simulation of the propagation of a lower hybrid wave-packet in the toroidal geometry shows that the wave propagates faster in the high field side than the low field side, in agreement with a ray tracing calculation. Electromagnetic benchmarks of lower hybrid wave dispersion relation are also carried out. Electromagnetic mode conversion are observed in toroidal geometry, slow waves are launched at the plasma boundary and converts to fast waves at the mode conversion layer, which is consistent with linear theory.

Canonical Form and Separability of PPT States in 2xMxN Composite Quantum Systems

We investigate the canonical forms of positive partial transposition (PPT) density matrices in ${\cal C}^2 \otimes {\cal C}^M \otimes {\cal C}^N$ composite quantum systems with rank $N$. A general expression for these PPT states are explicitly obtained. From this canonical form a sufficient separability condition is presented.

Separability and entanglement in 2x3xN composite quantum systems

The separability and entanglement of quantum mixed states in $\Cb^2 \otimes \Cb^3 \otimes \Cb^N$ composite quantum systems are investigated. It is shown that all quantum states $ρ$ with positive partial transposes and rank $r(ρ)\leq N$ are separable.
