Universal scaling, beta function, and metal-insulator transitions

We demonstrate a universal scaling form of longitudinal resistance in the quantum critical region of metal-insulator transitions, based on numerical results of three-dimensional Anderson transitions (with and without magnetic field), two-dimensional quantum Hall plateau to insulator transition, as well as experimental data of the recently discovered two-dimensional metal-insulator transition. The associated reflection symmetry and a peculiar logarithmic form of the beta function exist over a wide range in which the resistance can change by more than one order of magnitude. Interesting implications for the two-dimensional metal-insulator transition are discussed.

Why T_c is too high when antiferromagnetism is underestimated? --- An understanding based on the phase string effect

It is natural for a Mott antiferromagnetism in RVB description to become a superconductor in doped metallic regime. But the issue of superconducting transition temperature is highly nontrivial, as the AF fluctuations in the form of RVB pair-breaking are crucial in determining the phase coherence of the superconductivity. Underestimated AF fluctuations in a fermionic RVB state are the essential reason causing an overestimate of T_c in the same system. We point out that by starting with a {\it bosonic} RVB description where both the long-range and short-range AF correlations can be accurately described, the AF fluctuations can effectively reduce T_c to a reasonable value through the phase string effect, by controlling the phase coherence of the superconducting order parameter.

Metal-insulator transition in spatially-correlated random magnetic field system

We reexamine the problem of delocalization of two-dimensional electrons in the presence of random magnetic field. By introducing spatial correlations among random fluxes, a well-defined metal-insulator transition characterized by a two-branch scaling of conductance has been demonstrated numerically. Critical conductance is found non-universal with a value around $e^2/h$. Interesting connections of this system with the recently observed B=0 two-dimensional metallic phase (Kravchenko et al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 50}, 8039 (1994)) are also discussed.

Reflection Symmetry and Quantized Hall Resistivity near Quantum Hall Transition

We present a direct numerical evidence for reflection symmetry of longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}$ and quantized Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}$ near the transition between $ν=1$ quantum Hall state and insulator, in accord with the recent experiments. Our results show that a universal scaling behavior of conductances, $σ_{xx}$ and $σ_{xy}$, in the transition regime decide the reflection symmetry of $ρ_{xx}$ and quantization of $ρ_{xy}$, independent of particle-hole symmetry. We also find that in insulating phase away from the transition region $ρ_{xy}$ deviates from the quantization and diverges with $ρ_{xx}$.

Magnetic Incommensurability in Doped Mott Insulator

In this paper we explore the incommensurate spatial modulation of spin-spin correlations as the intrinsic property of the doped Mott insulator, described by the $t-J$ model. We show that such an incommensurability is a direct manifestation of the phase string effect introduced by doped holes in both one- and two-dimensional cases. The magnetic incommensurate peaks of dynamic spin susceptibility in momentum space are in agreement with the neutron-scattering measurement of cuprate superconductors in both position and doping dependence. In particular, this incommensurate structure can naturally reconcile the neutron-scattering and NMR experiments of cuprates.

Mean-Field Description of Phase String Effect in the $t-J$ Model

A mean-field treatment of the phase string effect in the $t-J$ model is presented. Such a theory is able to unite the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase at half-filling and metallic phase at finite doping within a single theoretical framework. We find that the low-temperature occurrence of the AF long range ordering (AFLRO) at half-filling and superconducting condensation in metallic phase are all due to Bose condensations of spinons and holons, respectively, on the top of a spin background described by bosonic resonating-valence-bond (RVB) pairing. The fact that both spinon and holon here are bosonic objects, as the result of the phase string effect, represents a crucial difference from the conventional slave-boson and slave-fermion approaches. This theory also allows an underdoped metallic regime where the Bose condensation of spinons can still exist. Even though the AFLRO is gone here, such a regime corresponds to a microscopic charge inhomogeneity with short-ranged spin ordering. We discuss some characteristic experimental consequences for those different metallic regimes. A perspective on broader issues based on the phase string theory is also discussed.

A bosonic RVB description of doped antiferromagnet

We propose a theory for doped antiferromagnet based on a bosonic resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state with incorporating the phase string effect. Both antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting phase transitions occur naturally within such a bosonic RVB phase. Two distinct metallic regions -- underdoping and optimum-doping -- are also found to be a logic consequence, whose unique features explain the recent neutron-scattering measurements in cuprates.

New universality of metal-insulator transition in integer quantum Hall effect system

A new universality of metal-insulator transition in integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) system is studied based on a lattice model, where the IQHE states only exist within a finite range of Fermi energy in the presence of disorders. A two-parameter scaling law is found at the high-energy boundary where direct transitions from high IQHE states to insulator occur. We find $ρ_{xx}= ρ_{xy}$ at the critical point whose value can continuously vary as a single function of the Landau-level filling number $n_ν$. Such a new universality well explains recent experiment by Song et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2200 (1997)).

Phase String Effect in the t-J Model: General Theory

We reexamine the problem of a hole moving in an antiferromagnetic spin background and find that the injected hole will always pick up a sequence of nontrivial phases from the spin degrees of freedom. Previously unnoticed, such a string-like phase originates from the hidden Marshall signs which are scrambled by the hopping of the hole. We can rigorously show that this phase string is non-repairable at low energy and give a general proof that the spectral weight Z must vanish at the ground-state energy due to the phase string effect. Thus, the quasiparticle description fails here and the quantum interference effect of the phase string dramatically affects the long-distance behavior of the injected hole. We introduce a so-called phase-string formulation of the t-J model for a general number of holes in which the phase string effect can be explicitly tracked. As an example, by applying this new mathematical formulation in one dimension, we reproduce the well-known Luttinger-liquid behaviors of the asymptotic single-electron Green's function and the spin-spin correlation function. We can also use the present phase string theory to justify previously developed spin-charge separation theory in two dimensions, which offers a systematic explanation for the transport and magnetic anomalies in the high-T_c cuprates.

A topological characterization of delocalization in a spin-orbit coupling system

We show that wavefunctions in a two-dimensional (2D) electron system with spin-orbit coupling can be characterized by a topological quantity--the Chern integer due to the existence of the intrinsic Kramers degeneracy. The localization-delocalization transition in such a system is studied in terms of such a Chern number description, which reproduces the known metal-insulator transition point. The present work suggests a unified picture for various known 2D delocalization phenomena based on the same topological characterization.

Disappearance of integer quantum Hall effect

The disappearance of integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) at strong disorder and weak magnetic field is studied in a lattice model. A generic sequence by which the IQHE plateaus disappear is revealed: higher IQHE plateaus always vanish earlier than lower ones, and extended levels between those plateaus do not float up in energy but keep merging together after the destruction of plateaus. All of these features remain to be true in the weak-field limit as shown by the thermodynamic-localization-length calculation. Topological characterization in terms of Chern integers provides a simple physical explanation and suggests a qualitative difference between the lattice and continuum models.

Destruction of integer quantum Hall effect at strong disorder: A numerical study

A breakdown of integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) at strong disorder is studied numerically in a lattice model. We find a generic sequence by which the integer quantum Hall plateaus disappear: higher IQHE plateaus always vanish earlier than lower ones. We show that extended levels between these plateaus do not float up in energy but keep merging together after the disappearance of plateaus, which eventually leads to a localization in the whole system. We also study this phenomenon in terms of topological properties, which provides a simple physical explanation.

Spin-Charge Separation in the $t-J$ Model: Magnetic and Transport Anomalies

A real spin-charge separation scheme is found based on a saddle-point state of the $t-J$ model. In the one-dimensional (1D) case, such a saddle-point reproduces the correct asymptotic correlations at the strong-coupling fixed-point of the model. In the two-dimensional (2D) case, the transverse gauge field confining spinon and holon is shown to be gapped at {\em finite doping} so that a spin-charge deconfinement is obtained for its first time in 2D. The gap in the gauge fluctuation disappears at half-filling limit, where a long-range antiferromagnetic order is recovered at zero temperature and spinons become confined. The most interesting features of spin dynamics and transport are exhibited at finite doping where exotic {\em residual} couplings between spin and charge degrees of freedom lead to systematic anomalies with regard to a Fermi-liquid system. In spin dynamics, a commensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuation with a small, doping-dependent energy scale is found, which is characterized in momentum space by a Gaussian peak at ($π/a$, $ π/a$) with a doping-dependent width ($\propto \sqrtδ$, $δ$ is the doping concentration). This commensurate magnetic fluctuation contributes a non-Korringa behavior for the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate. There also exits a characteristic temperature scale below which a pseudogap behavior appears in the spin dynamics. Furthermore, an incommensurate magnetic fluctuation is also obtained at a {\em finite} energy regime. In transport, a strong short-range phase interference leads to an effective holon Lagrangian which can give rise to a series of interesting phenomena including linear-$T$ resistivity and $T^2$ Hall-angle. We discuss the striking similarities of these theoretical features with those found in the high-$T_c$ cuprates and give a

Marshall sign and the doped $t-J$ model

Marshall sign as a sole source of sign problem hidden in an antiferromagnet is explored under doping. By tracking the Marshall sign, a zero spectral weight $Z$ is revealed in the doped antiferromagnetic system. $Z=0$ is caused by a phase string induced by the ``bare'' hole. By eliminating such a phase string through nonlocal transformations, a non-perturbative scheme is obtained. It is argued that this formalism provides a unique way to get access to the real ground state of the doped $t-J$ model for both one- and two-dimensions.

Vanishing spectral weight in a one-hole-doped antiferromagnet: A rigorous result

By explicitly tracking the Marshall sign, a phase string induced by hopping is revealed in the one-hole-doped $t-J$ model. It is rigorously shown that such a phase string cannot be eliminated through low-lying spin excitations, and it either causes the spectral weight $Z=0$, or leads to the localization of the doped hole. Implications for finite doping are also discussed.

Delocalization of electrons in a Random Magnetic Field

Delocalization problem for a two-dimensional non-interacting electron system is studied under a random magnetic field. With the presence of a random magnetic field, the Hall conductance carried by each eigenstate can become nonzero and quantized in units of $e^2/h$. Extended states are characterized by nonzero Hall conductance, and by studying finite-size scaling of the density of extended states, an insulator-metal phase transition is revealed. The metallic phase is found at the center of energy band which is separated from the localized states at the band tails by critical energies $\pm E_c$. Both localization exponent and the critical energy $E_c$ are shown to be dependent on the strength of random magnetic field.
