On mixing diffeomorphisms of the disk

We prove that a real analytic pseudo-rotation $f$ of the disc or the sphere is never topologically mixing. When the rotation number of $f$ is of Brjuno type, the latter follows from a KAM theorem of Rüssmann on the stability of real analytic elliptic fixed points. In the non-Brjuno case, we prove that a pseudo-rotation of class $C^k$, $k\geq 2$, is $C^{k-1}$-rigid using the simple observation, derived from Franks' Lemma on free discs, that a pseudo-rotation with small rotation number compared to its $C^1$ (or Hölder) norm must be close to Identity. From our result and a structure theorem by Franks and Handel (on zero entropy surface diffeomorphisms) it follows that an analytic conservative diffeomorphism of the disc or the sphere that is topologically mixing must have positive topological entropy. In our proof we need an a priori limit on the growth of the derivatives of the iterates of a pseudo-rotation that we obtain via an effective finite information version of the Katok closing lemma for an area preserving surface diffeomorphism $f$, that provides a controlled gap in the possible growth of the derivatives of $f$ between exponential and sub-exponential.

Doping evolution of the superconducting gap structure in heavily hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$: heat transport study

We performed systematic thermal conductivity measurements on heavily hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with 0.747 $\leq x \leq$ 0.974. At $x$ = 0.747, the $κ_0/T$ is negligible, indicating nodeless superconducting gap. A small residual linear term $κ_0/T$ ($\approx$ 0.035 mW/K$^2$ cm) appears at $x$ = 0.826, and it increases slowly up to $x$ = 0.974, followed by a drastic increase of more than 20 times to the pure KFe$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 1.0). This doping dependence of $κ_0/T$ clearly shows that the nodal gap appears near $x = 0.8$, likely associated with the change of Fermi surface topology. The small values of $κ_0/T$ from $x$ = 0.826 to 0.974 support a "$\curlyvee$"-shaped nodal $s$-wave gap recently revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments at $x$ = 0.9. Furthermore, the drastic increase of $κ_0/T$ from $x$ = 0.974 to 1.0 is inconsistent with a symmetry-imposed $d$-wave gap in KFe$_2$As$_2$, and the possible nodal gap structure in KFe$_2$As$_2$ is discussed.

Drastic pressure effect on the extremely large magnetoresistance in WTe2: quantum oscillation study

The quantum oscillations of the magnetoresistance under ambient and high pressure have been studied for WTe$_2$ single crystals, in which extremely large magnetoresistance was discovered recently. By analyzing the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, four Fermi surfaces are identified, and two of them are found to persist to high pressure. The sizes of these two pockets are comparable, but show increasing difference with pressure. At 0.3 K and in 14.5 T, the magnetoresistance decreases drastically from 1.25 $\times$ $10^5$\% under ambient pressure to 7.47 $\times$ $10^3$\% under 23.6 kbar, which is likely caused by the relative change of Fermi surfaces. These results support the scenario that the perfect balance between the electron and hole populations is the origin of the extremely large magnetoresistance in WTe$_2$.

Laser-driven platform for generation and characterization of strong quasi-static magnetic fields

Quasi-static magnetic-fields up to $800\,$T are generated in the interaction of intense laser pulses ($500\,$J, $1\,$ns, $10^{17}\,$W/cm$^2$) with capacitor-coil targets of different materials. The reproducible magnetic-field peak and rise-time, consistent with the laser pulse duration, were accurately inferred from measurements with GHz-bandwidth inductor pickup coils (B-dot probes). Results from Faraday rotation of polarized optical laser light and deflectometry of energetic proton beams are consistent with the B-dot probe measurements at the early stages of the target charging, up to $t\approx 0.35\,$ns, and then are disturbed by radiation and plasma effects. The field has a dipole-like distribution over a characteristic volume of $1\,$mm$^3$, which is coherent with theoretical expectations. These results demonstrate a very efficient conversion of the laser energy into magnetic fields, thus establishing a robust laser-driven platform for reproducible, well characterized, generation of quasi-static magnetic fields at the kT-level, as well as for magnetization and accurate probing of high-energy-density samples driven by secondary powerful laser or particle beams.

Quasiparticles dynamics in high-temperature superconductors far from equilibrium: an indication of pairing amplitude without phase coherence

We perform time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of optimally doped $\tn{Bi}_2\tn{Sr}_2\tn{CaCu}_2\tn{O}_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) and $\tn{Bi}_2\tn{Sr}_{2-x}\tn{La}_{x}\tn{Cu}\tn{O}_{6+δ}$ (Bi-2201). The electrons dynamics show that inelastic scattering by nodal quasiparticles decreases when the temperature is lowered below the critical value of the superconducting phase transition. This drop of electronic dissipation is astonishingly robust and survives to photoexcitation densities much larger than the value sustained by long-range superconductivity. The unconventional behaviour of quasiparticle scattering is ascribed to superconducting correlations extending on a length scale comparable to the inelastic path. Our measurements indicate that strongly driven superconductors enter in a regime without phase coherence but finite pairing amplitude. The latter vanishes near to the critical temperature and has no evident link with the pseudogap observed by Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARPES).

A Recursive Sparse Grid Collocation Method for Differential Equations with White Noise

We consider a sparse grid collocation method in conjunction with a time discretization of the differential equations for computing expectations of functionals of solutions to differential equations perturbed by time-dependent white noise. We first analyze the error of Smolyak's sparse grid collocation used to evaluate expectations of functionals of solutions to stochastic differential equations discretized by the Euler scheme. We show theoretically and numerically that this algorithm can have satisfactory accuracy for small magnitude of noise or small integration time, however it does not converge neither with decrease of the Euler scheme's time step size nor with increase of Smolyak's sparse grid level. Subsequently, we use this method as a building block for proposing a new algorithm by combining sparse grid collocation with a recursive procedure. This approach allows us to numerically integrate linear stochastic partial differential equations over longer times, which is illustrated in numerical tests on a stochastic advection-diffusion equation.

Nodal superconductivity and superconducting dome in new layered superconductor Ta4Pd3Te16

We measured the low-temperature thermal conductivity of a new layered superconductor with quasi-one-dimensional characteristics, the ternary telluride Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ with transition temperature $T_c \approx$ 4.3 K. The significant residual linear term of thermal conductivity in zero magnetic field and its rapid field dependence provide evidences for nodes in the superconducting gap. By measuring resistivity under pressures, we reveal a superconducting dome in the temperature-pressure phase diagram. The existence of gap nodes and superconducting dome suggests unconventional superconductivity in Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$, which may relate to a charge-density wave instability in this low-dimensional compound.

Heat transport in RbFe2As2 single crystal: evidence for nodal superconducting gap

The in-plane thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor RbFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal ($T_c \approx$ 2.1 K) was measured down to 100 mK. In zero field, the observation of a significant residual linear term $κ_0/T$ = 0.65 mW K$^{-2}$ cm$^{-1}$ provides clear evidence for nodal superdonducting gap. The field dependence of $κ_0/T$ is similar to that of its sister compound CsFe$_2$As$_2$ with comparable residual resistivity $ρ_0$, and lies between the dirty and clean KFe$_2$As$_2$. These results suggest that the (K,Rb,Cs)Fe$_2$As$_2$ serial superconductors have a common nodal gap structure.

Discovery of a new Y dwarf: WISE J030449.03-270508.3

We present a new Y dwarf, WISE J030449.03-270508.3, confirmed from a candidate sample designed to pick out low temperature objects from the WISE database. The new object is typed Y0pec following a visual comparison with spectral standards, and lies at a likely distance of 10-17 pc. Its tangential velocity suggests thin disk membership, but it shows some spectral characteristics that suggest it may be metal-poor and/or older than previously identified Y0 dwarfs. Based on trends seen for warmer late type T dwarfs, the Y-band flux peak morphology is indicative of sub-solar metallicity, and the enhanced red wing of the J-band flux peak offers evidence for high gravity and/or low metallicity (with associated model trends suggesting an age closer to ~10 Gyr and mass in the range 0.02-0.03 Mo). This object may thus be extending the population parameter-space of the known Y0 dwarfs.

Multi-gap nodeless superconductivity in nickel chalcogenide TlNi2Se2

Low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystals of TlNi$_2$Se$_2$, a nickel-chalcogenide heavy-electron superconductor with $T_c$ $\simeq$ 3.7 K. In zero field, the residual electronic contribution at $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0 K ($κ_0/T$) was well separated from the total thermal conductivity, which is less than 0.45\% of its normal-state value. Such a tiny residual $κ_0/T$ is unlikely contributed by the nodal quasiparticles. Nodeless gap structure is supported by the very weak field dependence of $κ_0(H)/T$ in low magnetic fields. In the whole field range, $κ_0(H)/T$ exhibits an "$S$"-shape curve, as in the case of nickel pnictides BaNi$_2$As$_2$ and SrNi$_2$P$_2$. This common feature of nickel-based superconductors can be explained by multiple nodeless superconducting gaps.

Impact of nitrogen incorporation on interface states in (100)Si/HfO2

The influence of nitrogen incorporation on the energy distribution of interface states in the (100)Si/HfO2 system and their passivation by hydrogen have been studied. The results are compared to those of nominally N-free samples. The nitrogen in the (100)Si/HfO2 entity is found to increase the trap density, most significantly, in the upper part of Si band gap, in which energy range nitrogen incorporation prevents passivation of interface traps by hydrogen. At the same time, passivation of fast interface traps in the lower part of the band gap proceeds efficiently, provided the thickness of the nitrogen containing interlayer is kept within a few monolayers. The minimal interface trap density below the midgap achieved after passivation in H2 is dominated by the presence of slow N-related states, likely located in the insulator. As inferred from capacitance-voltage and ac conductance analysis, the lowest density of electrically active defects [(8-9)x10 10 eV-1cm-2 at 0.4-0.5 eV from the top of the Si valence band edge] is achieved both in the N-free and N-containing (100)Si/HfO2 structuresafter post-deposition anneal at 800C in (N2+5%O2) followed by passivation in molecular hydrogen at 400C for 30 min.

Quantum transport evidence for a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal phase in Cd3As2

The material termed three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal has attracted great interests recently, since it is an electronic analogue to two-dimensional graphene. Starting from this novel phase, various topologically distinct phases may be obtained, such as topological insulator, Weyl semimetal, quantum spin Hall insulator, and topological superconductor. Soon after the theoretical predictions, the angle-resolve photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments gave evidences for 3D Dirac points in Na3Bi and Cd3As2. Here we report quantum transport properties of Cd3As2 single crystal in magnetic field. A sizable linear quantum magnetoresistance is observed at high temperature. With decreasing temperature, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations appear in both longitudinal resistance Rxx and transverse Hall resistance Rxy. From the strong oscillatory component ΔRxx, the linear dependence of Landau index n on 1/B gives an n-axis intercept 0.58. Our quantum transport result clearly reveals a nontrivial π Berry's phase, thus provides strong bulk evidence for a 3D Dirac semimetal phase in Cd3As2. This may open new perspectives for its use in electronic devices.

Discovery of higher order reentrant modes by constructing a cylindrical symmetric ring and post cavity resonator

Analysis of the properties of resonant modes in a reentrant cavity structure comprising of a post and a ring was undertaken and verified experimentally. In particular we show the existence of higher order reentrant cavity modes in such a structure. Results show that the new cavity has two re-entrant modes, one which has a better displacement sensitivity than the single post resonator and the other with a reduced sensitivity. The more sensitive mode is better than the single post resonator by a factor of 2 to 1.5 when the gap spacing is below 100 $ μ$m. This type of cavity has the potential to operate as a highly sensitive transducer for a variety of precision measurement applications, in particular applications which require coupling to more than one sensitive transducer mode.

Nodeless superconducting gaps in Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{4-δ}$As$_8$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ probed by quasiparticle heat transport

The in-plane thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{4-δ}$As$_8$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ single crystal (``10-4-8", $T_c$ = 22 K) was measured down to 80 mK. In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible, suggesting nodeless superconducting gaps in this multiband compound. In magnetic fields, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly, which mimics those of multiband superconductor NbSe$_2$ and LuNi$_2$B$_2$C with highly anisotropic gap. Such a field dependence of $κ_0/T$ is an evidence for multiple superconducting gaps with quite different magnitudes or highly anisotropic gap. Comparing with the London penetration depth results of Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ (``10-3-8") compound, the 10-4-8 and 10-3-8 compounds may have similar superconducting gap structure.

Parallaxes of five L Dwarfs with a Robotic Telescope

We report the parallax and proper motion of five L dwarfs obtained with observations from the robotic Liverpool Telescope. Our derived proper motions are consistent with published values and have considerably smaller errors. Based on our spectral type versus absolute magnitude diagram, we do not find any evidence for binaries among our sample, or, at least no comparable mass binaries. Their space velocities locate them within the thin disk and based on the model comparisons they have solar-like abundances. For all five objects, we derived effective temperature, luminosity, radius, gravity and mass from a evolutionary model(CBA00) and our measured parallax; moreover, we derived their effective temperature by integrating observed optical and near-infrared spectra and model spectra (BSH06 or BT-Dusty respectively) at longer wavelengths to obtain bolometric {\bf flux using} the classical Stefan-Boltzmann law: generally the three temperatures for one object derived using two different methods with three models are consistent, while at lower temperature(e.g. for L4) the differences among the three temperatures are slightly larger than that at higher temperature(e.g. for L1).

Generation of Massive Entanglement Through Adiabatic Quantum Phase Transition in a spinor condensate

We propose a method to generate massive entanglement in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate from an initial product state through adiabatic sweep of magnetic field across a quantum phase transition induced by competition between the spin-dependent collision interaction and the quadratic Zeeman effect. The generated many-body entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable entanglement depth in the proximity of the Dicke state. We show that the scheme is robust to practical noise and experimental imperfection and under realistic conditions it is possible to generate genuine entanglement for hundreds of atoms.

Nodeless superconductivity in Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ with strong spin-orbital coupling

The thermal conductivity $κ$ of superconductor Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$Te$_2$ ($x$ = 0.05) single crystal with strong spin-orbital coupling was measured down to 50 mK. The residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. In low magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence. These results demonstrate that the superconducting gap of Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$Te$_2$ is nodeless, and the pairing symmetry is likely conventional s-wave, despite the existence of strong spin-orbital coupling and a quantum critical point.

Full superconducting gap in the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te

The thermal conductivity of the doped topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te superconducting single crystal with $T_c =$ 4.1 K, was measured down to 50 mK. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. The $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence at low magnetic field. These results suggest that the superconducting gap is nodeless, unless there exist point nodes with directions perpendicular to the heat current. Due to its high-symmetry fcc crystal structure of Sn$_{0.6}$In$_{0.4}$Te, however, such point nodes can be excluded. Therefore we demonstrate that this topological superconductor candidate has a full superconducting gap in the bulk. It is likely the unconventional odd-parity $A_{1u}$ state which supports a surface Andreev bound state.
