Seventy six T dwarfs from the UKIDSS LAS: benchmarks, kinematics and an updated space density

We report the discovery of 76 new T dwarfs from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (LAS). Near-infrared broad and narrow-band photometry and spectroscopy are presented for the new objects, along with WISE and warm-Spitzer photometry. Proper motions for 128 UKIDSS T dwarfs are presented from a new two epoch LAS proper motion catalogue. We use these motions to identify two new benchmark systems: LHS 6176AB, a T8+M4 pair and HD118865AB, a T5.5+F8 pair. Using age constraints from the primaries and evolutionary models to constrain the radii we have estimated their physical properties from their bolometric luminosity. We compare the colours and properties of known benchmark T dwarfs to the latest model atmospheres and draw two principal conclusions. Firstly, it appears that the H - [4.5] and J - W2 colours are more sensitive to metallicity than has previously been recognised, such that differences in metallicity may dominate over differences in Teff when considering relative properties of cool objects using these colours. Secondly, the previously noted apparent dominance of young objects in the late-T dwarf sample is no longer apparent when using the new model grids and the expanded sample of late-T dwarfs and benchmarks. This is supported by the apparently similar distribution of late-T dwarfs and earlier-type T dwarfs on reduced proper motion diagrams that we present. Finally, we present updated space densities for the late-T dwarfs, and compare our values to simulation predictions and those from WISE.

The last three outbursts of H 1743-322 observed by RXTE in its latest service phase

After 2010, three outbursts of H 1743-322 were detected by RXTE. We have carried out timing and spectral analysis of the data, emphasizing on the two with relatively complete evolution history presented in the RXTE/PCA observations. We then constitute an enlarged outburst sample for H 1743-322 which allows to investigate the spectral transitions in more details. We find that the spectral transitions to high-soft state constrain a region for four outbursts in hardness-intensity diagram. An extension of the region locates in the vicinity of the failed outburst in 2008, and excludes it from a successful group. We therefore suggest the failed outburst in 2008 may present the first almost successful outburst sample, which is important for modelling the outburst, especially upon the conditions required for transition to high-soft state.

A fundamental mean-square convergence theorem for SDEs with locally Lipschitz coefficients and its applications

A version of the fundamental mean-square convergence theorem is proved for stochastic differential equations (SDE) which coefficients are allowed to grow polynomially at infinity and which satisfy a one-sided Lipschitz condition. The theorem is illustrated on a number of particular numerical methods, including a special balanced scheme and fully implicit methods. Some numerical tests are presented.

The Anglo-Australian Planet Search. XXII. Two New Multi-Planet Systems

We report the detection of two new planets from the Anglo-Australian Planet Search. These planets orbit two stars each previously known to host one planet. The new planet orbiting HD 142 has a period of 6005\pm427 days, and a minimum mass of 5.3M_Jup. HD142c is thus a new Jupiter analog: a gas-giant planet with a long period and low eccentricity (e = 0.21 \pm 0.07). The second planet in the HD 159868 system has a period of 352.3\pm1.3 days, and m sin i=0.73\pm0.05 M_Jup. In both of these systems, including the additional planets in the fitting process significantly reduced the eccentricity of the original planet. These systems are thus examples of how multiple-planet systems can masquerade as moderately eccentric single-planet systems.

Identifying Ultra-Cool Dwarfs at Low Galactic Latitudes: A Southern Candidate Catalogue

We present an Ultra-Cool Dwarf (UCD) catalogue compiled from low southern Galactic latitudes and mid-plane, from a cross-correlation of the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS surveys. The catalogue contains 246 members identified from 5042 sq. deg. within 220 deg. <= l <= 360 deg. and 0 deg. < l <= 30 deg., for |b| <= 15 deg. Sixteen candidates are spectroscopically confirmed in the near-IR as UCDs with spectral types from M7.5V to L9. Our catalogue selection method is presented enabling UCDs from ~M8V to the L-T transition to be selected down to a 2MASS limiting magnitude of Ks ~= 14.5 mag. This method does not require candidates to have optical detections for catalogue inclusion. An optimal set of optical/near-IR and reduced proper-motion selection criteria have been defined that includes: an Rf and Ivn photometric surface gravity test, a dual Rf-band variability check, and an additional photometric classification scheme to selectively limit contaminants. We identify four candidates as possible companions to nearby Hipparcos stars -- observations are needed to identify these as potential benchmark UCD companions. We also identify twelve UCDs within a possible distance 20 pc, three are previously unknown of which two are estimated within 10 pc, complimenting the nearby volume-limited census of UCDs. An analysis of the catalogue spatial completeness provides estimates for distance completeness over three UCD MJ ranges, while Monte-Carlo simulations provide an estimate of catalogue areal completeness at the 75 per cent level. We estimate a UCD space density of Rho (total) = (6.41+-3.01)x10^3/pc^3 over the range of 10.5 <= MJ ~< 14.9, similar to values measured at higher Galactic latitudes (|b| ~> 10 deg.) in the field population and obtained from more robust spectroscopically confirmed UCD samples.

Evidence for nodeless superconducting gap in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As from low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements

The thermal conductivity of optimally doped NaFe$_{0.972}$Co$_{0.028}$As ($T_c \sim$ 20 K) and overdoped NaFe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$As ($T_c \sim$ 11 K) single crystals were measured down to 50 mK. No residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is found in zero magnetic field for both compounds, which is an evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. Applying field up to $H$ = 9 T ($\approx H_{c2}/4$) does not noticeably increase $κ_0/T$ in NaFe$_{1.972}$Co$_{0.028}$As, which is consistent with multiple isotropic gaps with similar magnitudes. The $κ_0/T$ of overdoped NaFe$_{1.925}$Co$_{0.075}$As shows a relatively faster field dependence, indicating the increase of the ratio between the magnitudes of different gaps, or the enhancement of gap anisotropy upon increasing doping.

Measurement of correlations between low-frequency vibrational modes and particle rearrangements in quasi-two-dimensional colloidal glasses

We investigate correlations between low-frequency vibrational modes and rearrangements in two-dimensional colloidal glasses composed of thermosensitive microgel particles which readily permit variation of sample packing fraction. At each packing fraction, the particle displacement covariance matrix is measured and used to extract the vibrational spectrum of the "shadow" colloidal glass (i.e., the particle network with the same geometry and interactions as the sample colloid but absent damping). Rearrangements are induced by successive, small reductions in packing fraction. The experimental results suggest that low-frequency quasi-localized phonon modes in colloidal glasses, i.e., modes that present low energy barriers for system rearrangements, are spatially correlated with rearrangements in this thermal system.

Switching magnetoresistance in vertically interfaced Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 grown on ZnO nanowires

The synthesis, morphology and magneto-transport properties of nanostructure-engineered charge-ordered Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 grown on ZnO nanowires are reported. The stability of the charge-ordering can be tuned, but more interestingly the sign of the magnetoresistance is inverted at low temperatures. Coexistence of ferromagnetic clusters on the surface and antiferromagnetic phase in the core of the grains were considered in order to understand these features. This work suggests that such a process of growing on nanowires network can be readily extended to other transition metal oxides and open doors towards tailoring their functionalities.

Could AX J1841.0$-$0536 Be an Anti-Magnetar?

Recent observations show that supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) spend most of their lifetime at an intermediate level luminosity $\sim 10^{33}-10^{34}$ ergs$^{-1}$, and, when a blackbody model for the spectra is adopted, the resulting radii of the emission region are always only a few hundred meters, supporting the idea that during the intermediate state SFXTs are accreting matter from the companion star. From these observational phenomena we derive possible constraints on the magnetic field strengths of the neutron stars in four SFXTs with known spin periods. While IGR J11215$-$5952, IGR J16465$-$4507, and IGR J18483$-$0311 may have magnetic fields (up to a few $10^{11}-10^{12}$ G) similar to those of normal X-ray pulsars, the magnetic field of AX J1841.0$-$0536 is considerably low ($\la 10^{10}$ G). The high-mass companion stars in SFXTs implies that the neutron stars are relatively young objects, with age less than $\sim 10^7$ yr. Analysis of the spin evolution shows that neutron stars like AX J1841.0$-$0536 should be born with relatively long spin periods ($\la 1$ s). Considering the fact that among the four SFXTs only AX J1841.0$-$0536 is a "proper" one, and the other three are either "intermediate" SFXTs or have peculiar characteristics, we suggest that the neutron stars in some of SFXTs may have similar characteristics as several young central compact objects in supernova remnants called "anti-magnetars". These features, combining with accretion from clumpy winds, could make them distinct from standard supergiant X-ray binaries -- the low fields and relatively long spin periods guarantee accretion at very low level, resulting in a large dynamic range ($10^4-10^5$) of X-ray luminosity.

Termination of two-dimensional metallic conduction near metal-insulator transition in a Si/SiGe quantum well

We report in this Letter our recent low temperature transport results in a Si/SiGe quantum well with moderate peak mobility. An apparent metal-insulating transition is observed. Within a small range of densities near the transition, the conductivity $σ$ displays non-monotonic temperature dependence. After an initial decrease at high temperatures, $σ$ first increases with decreasing temperature T, showing a metallic behavior. As T continues decreasing, a downturn in $σ$ is observed. This downturn shifts to a lower T at higher densities. More interestingly, the downturn temperature shows a power law dependence on the mobility at the downturn position, suggesting that a similar downturn is also expected to occur deep in the apparent metallic regime at albeit experimentally inaccessible temperatures. This thus hints that the observed metallic phase in 2D systems might be a finite temperature effect.

Multiple Commutator Formulas

Let A be a quasi-finite R-algebra (i.e., a direct limit of module finite algebras) with identity. Let I_i, i=0,...,m, be two-sided ideals of A, \GL_n(A,I_i) the principal congruence subgroup of level I_i in GL_n(A) and E_n(A,I_i) be the relative elementary subgroup of level I_i. We prove a multiple commutator formula [E_n(A,I_0),\GL_n(A,I_1),& \GL_n(A, I_2),..., \GL_n(A, I_m)] = [E_n(A,I_0),E_n(A,I_1),E_n(A, I_2),..., E_n(A, I_m)], which is a broad generalization of the standard commutator formulas.

Impact on the Higgs Production Cross Section and Decay Branching Fractions of Heavy Quarks and Leptons in a Fourth Generation Model

In a fourth generation model with heavy quarks, the production cross section of the Higgs boson in the gluon-gluon fusion process is significantly increased due to additional quark loops. In a similar way, the partial decay width of the decay channels $H\rightarrow gg, γγ$ and $γZ$ is modified. These changes and their impact on the Higgs search are discussed.

Design and performance of a CMOS study sensor for a binary readout electromagnetic calorimeter

We present a study of a CMOS test sensor which has been designed, fabricated and characterised to investigate the parameters required for a binary readout electromagnetic calorimeter. The sensors were fabricated with several enhancements in addition to standard CMOS processing. Detailed simulations and experimental results of the performance of the sensor are presented. The sensor and pixels are shown to behave in accordance with expectations and the processing enhancements are found to be essential to achieve the performance required.

Relative unitary commutator calculus and applications

This note revisits localisation and patching method in the setting of generalised unitary groups. Introducing certain subgroups of relative elementary unitary groups, we develop relative versions of the conjugation calculus and the commutator calculus in unitary groups, which are both more general, and substantially easier than the ones available in the literature. For the general linear group such relative commutator calculus has been recently developed by the first and the third authors. As an application we prove the mixed commutator formula, for two form ideals of a form ring. This answers two problems posed in a paper by Alexei Stepanov and the second author.

The yoga of commutators

In the present paper we discuss some recent versions of localisation methods for calculations in the groups of points of algebraic-like and classical-like groups. Namely, we describe relative localisation, universal localisation, and enhanced versions of localisation-completion. Apart from the general strategic description of these methods, we state some typical technical results of the conjugation calculus and the commutator calculus. Also, we state several recent results obtained therewith, such as relative standard commutator formulae, bounded width of commutators, with respect to the elementary generators, and nilpotent filtrations of congruence subgroups. Overall, this shows that localisation methods can be much more efficient, than expected.

QCD Critical Points and Their Associated Soft Modes

The mean-field level calculation shows that the QCD matter can have multiple critical points incorporating the color superconductivity under charge neutrality constraint due to the repulsive vector interaction; this actually implies that the QCD matter is very soft for a simultaneous formation of diquark and chiral condensates coupled with the baryonic density. Dynamical density fluctuations are analyzed as possible soft modes around the QCD critical point using dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics. It is found that the entropy fluctuation solely gets enhanced while the sound modes due to mechanical density fluctuations are strongly attenuated around the QCD CP, which may suggest a suppression or even total disappearance of Mach cone at the CP.

Microfluidic rheology of soft colloids above and below jamming

The rheology near jamming of a suspension of soft colloidal spheres is studied using a custom microfluidic rheometer that provides stress versus strain rate over many decades. We find non-Newtonian behavior below the jamming concentration and yield stress behavior above it. The data may be collapsed onto two branches with critical scaling exponents that agree with expectations based on Hertzian contacts and viscous drag. These results support the conclusion that jamming is similar to a critical phase transition, but with interaction-dependent exponents.
