Divisibility properties of polynomial expressions of random integers

We study divisibility properties of a set $\{f_1(\mathbf{U}_n^{(s)}),\ldots,f_m(\mathbf{U}_n^{(s)})\}$, where $f_1,\ldots,f_m$ are polynomials in $s$ variables over $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbf{U}_n^{(s)}$ is a point picked uniformly at random from the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}^s$, $s\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that the ${\rm GCD}$ and the suitably normalized ${\rm LCM}$ of this set converge in distribution to a.s.\ finite random variables under mild assumptions on $f_1,\ldots, f_m$. Our approach is based on the notion of integer adeles and a known fact that the uniform distribution on $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ converges to the Haar measure on the ring of integer adeles combined with the Lang-Weil bounds.

When does the chaos in the Curie-Weiss model stop to propagate?

We investigate increasing propagation of chaos for the mean-field Ising model of ferromagnetism (also known as the Curie-Weiss model) with $N$ spins at inverse temperature $β>0$ and subject to an external magnetic field of strength $h\in\mathbb{R}$. Using a different proof technique than in [Ben Arous, Zeitouni; 1999] we confirm the well-known propagation of chaos phenomenon: If $k=k(N)=o(N)$ as $N\to\infty$, then the $k$'th marginal distribution of the Gibbs measure converges to a product measure at $β<1$ or $h \neq 0$ and to a mixture of two product measures, if $β>1$ and $h =0$. More importantly, we also show that if $k(N)/N\to α\in (0,1]$, this property is lost and we identify a non-zero limit of the total variation distance between the number of positive spins among any $k$-tuple and the corresponding binomial distribution.

r-Lah Distribution: Properties, Limit Theorems and an Application to Compressed Sensing

We introduce and study the r-Lah distribution whose definition involves r-Stirling numbers of both kinds. We compute its expectation and variance, show its log-concavity and prove limit theorems for this distribution. We use these results to prove threshold phenomena for convex cones generated by random walks and to analyze the probability of unique recovery of sparse monotone signals from linear measurements.

Random Walks in the High-Dimensional Limit II: The Crinkled Subordinator

A crinkled subordinator is an $\ell^2$-valued random process which can be thought of as a version of the usual one-dimensional subordinator with each out of countably many jumps being in a direction orthogonal to the directions of all other jumps. We show that the path of a $d$-dimensional random walk with $n$ independent identically distributed steps with heavy-tailed distribution of the radial components and asymptotically orthogonal angular components converges in distribution in the Hausdorff distance up to isometry and also in the Gromov--Hausdorff sense, if viewed as a random metric space, to the closed range of a crinkled subordinator, as $d,n\to\infty$.

Random Walks in the High-Dimensional Limit I: The Wiener Spiral

We prove limit theorems for random walks with $n$ steps in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space as both $n$ and $d$ tend to infinity. One of our results states that the path of such a random walk, viewed as a compact subset of the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\ell^2$, converges in probability in the Hausdorff distance up to isometry and also in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to the Wiener spiral, as $d,n\to\infty$. Another group of results describes various possible limit distributions for the squared distance between the random walker at time $n$ and the origin.

Projections and angle sums of belt polytopes and permutohedra

Let $P\subset \mathbb R^n$ be a belt polytope, that is a polytope whose normal fan coincides with the fan of some hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal A$. Also, let $G:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb R^d$ be a linear map of full rank whose kernel is in general position with respect to the faces of $P$. We derive a formula for the number of $j$-faces of the ``projected'' polytope $GP$ in terms of the $j$-th level characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal A$. In particular, we show that the face numbers of $GP$ do not depend on the linear map $G$ provided a general position assumption is satisfied. Furthermore, we derive formulas for the sum of the conic intrinsic volumes and Grassmann angles of the tangent cones of $P$ at all of its $j$-faces. We apply these results to permutohedra of types $A$ and $B$, which yields closed formulas for the face numbers of projected permutohedra and the generalized angle sums of permutohedra in terms of Stirling numbers of both kinds and their $B$-analogues.

A probabilistic approach to Lorentz balls

We develop a probabilistic approach to study the volumetric and geometric properties of unit balls $\mathbb B_{q,1}^n$ of finite-dimensional Lorentz sequences spaces $\ell_{q,1}^n$. More precisely, we show that the empirical distribution of a random vector $X^{(n)}$ uniformly distributed on the volume normalized Lorentz ball in $\mathbb R^n$ converges weakly to a compactly supported symmetric probability distribution with explicitly given density; as a consequence we obtain a weak Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel principle for any fixed number $k\in\mathbb N$ of coordinates of $X^{(n)}$ as $n\to\infty$. Moreover, we prove a central limit theorem for the largest coordinate of $X^{(n)}$, demonstrating a quite different behavior than in the case of the $\ell_q^n$ balls, where a Gumbel distribution appears in the limit. Last but not least, we prove a Schechtman-Schmuckenschläger type result for the asymptotic volume of intersections of volume normalized Lorentz and $\ell^n_p$ balls.

Multivariate multiplicative functions of uniform random vectors in large integer domains

For a wide class of sequences of integer domains $\mathcal{D}_n\subset\mathbb{N}^d$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, we prove distributional limit theorems for $F(X_1^{(n)},\ldots,X_d^{(n)})$, where $F$ is a multivariate multiplicative function and $(X_1^{(n)},\ldots,X_d^{(n)})$ is a random vector with uniform distribution on $\mathcal{D}_n$. As a corollary, we obtain limit theorems for the greatest common divisor and least common multiple of the random set $\{X_1^{(n)},\ldots,X_d^{(n)}\}$. This generalizes previously known limit results for $\mathcal{D}_n$ being either a discrete cube or a discrete hyperbolic region.

Mod-$φ$ convergence of Stirling distributions and limit theorems for zeros of their generating functions

We study mod-$φ$ convergence of several probability distributions on the set of positive integers that involve Stirling numbers of both kinds and, as a consequence, derive various limit theorems for these distributions. We also derive closely related limit theorems for the distribution of zeros of the corresponding generating functions. For example, we identify the asymptotic distribution of zeros for the generating polynomial of the number of occupied boxes when $n$ balls are allocated equiprobably and independently among $θ$ boxes in the regime when $θ$ grows linearly with $n$.

Sectional Voronoi tessellations: Characterization and high-dimensional limits

The intersections of beta-Voronoi, beta-prime-Voronoi and Gaussian-Voronoi tessellations in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $\ell$-dimensional affine subspaces, $1\leq \ell\leq d-1$, are shown to be random tessellations of the same type but with different model parameters. In particular, the intersection of a classical Poisson-Voronoi tessellation with an affine subspace is shown to have the same distribution as a certain beta-Voronoi tessellation. The geometric properties of the typical cell and, more generally, typical $k$-faces, of the sectional Poisson-Voronoi tessellation are studied in detail. It is proved that in high dimensions, that is as $d\to\infty$, the intersection of the $d$-dimensional Poison-Voronoi tessellation with an affine subspace of fixed dimension $\ell$ converges to the $\ell$-dimensional Gaussian-Voronoi tessellation.

A law of the iterated logarithm for iterated random walks, with application to random recursive trees

Consider a Crump-Mode-Jagers process generated by an increasing random walk whose increments have finite second moment. Let $Y_k(t)$ be the number of individuals in generation $k\in \mathbb N$ born in the time interval $[0,t]$. We prove a law of the iterated logarithm for $Y_k(t)$ with fixed $k$, as $t\to +\infty$. As a consequence, we derive a law of the iterated logarithm for the number of vertices at a fixed level $k$ in a random recursive tree, as the number of vertices goes to $\infty$.

Large deviations for random matrices in the orthogonal group and Stiefel manifold with applications to random projections of product distributions

We prove large deviation principles (LDPs) for random matrices in the orthogonal group and Stiefel manifold, determining both the speed and good convex rate functions that are explicitly given in terms of certain log-determinants of trace-class operators and are finite on the set of Hilbert-Schmidt operators $M$ satisfying $\|MM^*\|<1$. As an application of those LDPs, we determine the precise large deviation behavior of $k$-dimensional random projections of high-dimensional product distributions using an appropriate interpretation in terms of point processes, also characterizing the space of all possible deviations. The case of uniform distributions on $\ell_p$-balls, $1\leq p \leq \infty$, is then considered and reduced to appropriate product measures. Those applications generalize considerably the recent work [Johnston, Kabluchko, Prochno: Projections of the uniform distribution on the cube - a large deviation perspective, Studia Mathematica 264 (2022), 103-119].

Random cones in high dimensions I: Donoho-Tanner and Cover-Efron cones

Two models of random cones in high dimensions are considered, together with their duals. The Donoho-Tanner random cone $D_{n,d}$ can be defined as the positive hull of $n$ independent $d$-dimensional Gaussian random vectors. The Cover-Efron random cone $C_{n,d}$ is essentially defined as the same positive hull, conditioned on the event that it is not the whole space. We consider expectations of various combinatorial and geometric functionals of these random cones and prove that they satisfy limit theorems, as $d$ and $n$ tend to infinity in a suitably coordinated way. This includes, for example, large deviation principles and central as well as non-central limit theorems for the expected number of $k$-faces and the $k$-th conic intrinsic volumes, as $n$, $d$ and possibly also $k$ tend to infinity simultaneously. Furthermore, we determine the precise high-dimensional asymptotic behaviour of the expected statistical dimension for both models of random cones, uncovering thereby another high-dimensional phase transition. As an application, limit theorems for the number of $k$-faces of high-dimensional polytopes generated by random Gale diagrams are discussed as well.

Lah distribution: Stirling numbers, records on compositions, and convex hulls of high-dimensional random walks

Let $ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots$ be a sequence of independent copies of a random vector in $\mathbb R^d$ having an absolutely continuous distribution. Consider a random walk $S_i:=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_i$, and let $C_{n,d}:=\text{conv}(0,S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_n)$ be the convex hull of the first $n+1$ points it has visited. The polytope $C_{n,d}$ is called $k$-neighborly if for every indices $0\leq i_0 <\cdots < i_k\leq n$ the convex hull of the $k+1$ points $S_{i_0},\ldots, S_{i_k}$ is a $k$-dimensional face of $C_{n,d}$. We study the probability that $C_{n,d}$ is $k$-neighborly in various high-dimensional asymptotic regimes, i.e. when $n$, $d$, and possibly also $k$ diverge to $\infty$. There is an explicit formula for the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces of $C_{n,d}$ which involves Stirling numbers of both kinds. Motivated by this formula, we introduce a distribution, called the Lah distribution, and study its properties. In particular, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Lah distribution in terms of random compositions and records, and explicitly compute its factorial moments. Limit theorems which we prove for the Lah distribution imply neighborliness properties of $C_{n,d}$. This yields a new class of random polytopes exhibiting phase transitions parallel to those discovered by Vershik and Sporyshev, Donoho and Tanner for random projections of regular simplices and crosspolytopes.

Beta-star polytopes and hyperbolic stochastic geometry

Motivated by problems of hyperbolic stochastic geometry we introduce and study the class of beta-star polytopes. A beta-star polytope is defined as the convex hull of an inhomogeneous Poisson processes on the complement of the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with density proportional to $(||x||^2-1)^β$, where $||x|| > 1$ and $β>d/2$. Explicit formulas for various geometric and combinatorial functionals associated with beta-star polytopes are provided, including the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces, the expected external angle sums and the expected intrinsic volumes. Beta-star polytopes are relevant in the context of hyperbolic stochastic geometry, since they are tightly connected to the typical cell of a Poisson-Voronoi tessellation as well as the zero cell of a Poisson hyperplane tessellation in hyperbolic space. The general results for beta-star polytopes are used to provide explicit formulas for the expected $f$- vector of the typical hyperbolic Poisson-Voronoi cell and the hyperbolic Poisson zero cell. Their asymptotics for large intensities and their monotonicity behaviour is discussed as well. Finally, stochastic geometry in the de Sitter half-space is studied as the hyperbolic analogue to recent investigations about random cones generated by random points on half-spheres in spherical or conical stochastic geometry.

Face numbers of high-dimensional Poisson zero cells

Let $\mathcal Z_d$ be the zero cell of a $d$-dimensional, isotropic and stationary Poisson hyperplane tessellation. We study the asymptotic behavior of the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces of $\mathcal Z_d$, as $d\to\infty$. For example, we show that the expected number of hyperfaces of $\mathcal Z_d$ is asymptotically equivalent to $\sqrt{2π/3}\, d^{3/2}$, as $d\to\infty$. We also prove that the expected solid angle of a random cone spanned by $d$ random vectors that are independent and uniformly distributed on the unit upper half-sphere in $\mathbb R^{d}$ is asymptotic to $\sqrt 3 π^{-d}$, as $d\to\infty$.

Positive hulls of random walks and bridges

We study random convex cones defned as positive hulls of $d$-dimensional random walks and bridges. We compute expectations of various geometric functionals of these cones such as the number of $k$-dimensional faces and the sums of conic quermassintegrals of their $k$-dimensional faces. These expectations are expressed in terms of Stirling numbers of both kinds and their $B$-analogues.

On weak Fraisse limits

Using the natural action of $S_\infty$ we show that a countable hereditary class $\mathcal C$ of finitely generated structures has the joint embedding property (JEP) and the weak amalgamation property (WAP) if and only if there is a structure $M$ whose isomorphism type is comeager in the space of all countable, infinitely generated structures with age in $\mathcal C$. In this case, $M$ is the weak Fraïssé limit of $\mathcal C$. This applies in particular to countable structures with generic automorphisms and recovers a result by Kechris and Rosendal [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., 2007].
