Conic intrinsic volumes of Weyl chambers

We give a new, direct proof of the formulas for the conic intrinsic volumes of the Weyl chambers of types $A_{n-1}, B_n$ and $D_n$. These formulas express the conic intrinsic volumes in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and their $B$- and $D$-analogues. The proof involves an explicit determination of the internal and external angles of the faces of the Weyl chambers.

The $β$-Delaunay tessellation I: Description of the model and geometry of typical cells

In this paper two new classes of stationary random simplicial tessellations, the so-called $β$- and $β'$-Delaunay tessellations, are introduced. Their construction is based on a space-time paraboloid hull process and generalizes that of the classical Poisson-Delaunay tessellation. The distribution of volume-power weighted typical cells is explicitly identified, establishing thereby a remarkable connection to the classes of $β$- and $β'$-polytopes. These representations are used to determine principal characteristics of such cells, including volume moments, expected angle sums and cell intensities.

Universal-homogeneous structures are generic

We prove that the Fraïssé limit of a Fraïssé class $\mathcal C$ is the (unique) countable structure whose isomorphism type is comeager (with respect to a certain logic topology) in the Baire space of all structures whose age is contained in $\mathcal C$ and which are defined on a fixed countable universe. In particular, the set of groups isomorphic to Hall's universal group is comeager in the space of all countable locally finite groups and the set of fields isomorphic to the algebraic closure of $\mathbb F_p$ is comeager in the space of countable fields of characteristic $p$.

Projections of the uniform distribution on the cube -- a large deviation perspective

Let $Θ^{(n)}$ be a random vector uniformly distributed on the unit sphere $\mathbb S^{n-1}$ in $\mathbb R^n$. Consider the projection of the uniform distribution on the cube $[-1,1]^n$ to the line spanned by $Θ^{(n)}$. The projected distribution is the random probability measure $μ_{Θ^{(n)}}$ on $\mathbb R$ given by \[ μ_{Θ^{(n)}}(A) := \frac 1 {2^n} \int_{[-1,1]^n} \mathbb 1\{\langle u, Θ^{(n)} \rangle \in A\} du, \] for Borel subets $A$ of $\mathbb{R}$. It is well known that, with probability $1$, the sequence of random probability measures $μ_{Θ^{(n)}}$ converges weakly to the centered Gaussian distribution with variance $1/3$. We prove a large deviation principle for the sequence $μ_{Θ^{(n)}}$ on the space of probability measures on $\mathbb R$ with speed $n$. The (good) rate function is explicitly given by $I(ν(α)) := - \frac{1}{2} \log ( 1 - \|α\|_2^2)$ whenever $ν(α)$ is the law of a random variable of the form \begin{align*} \sqrt{1 - \|α\|_2^2 } \frac{Z}{\sqrt 3} + \sum_{ k = 1}^\infty α_k U_k, \end{align*} where $Z$ is standard Gaussian independent of $U_1,U_2,\ldots$ which are i.i.d. $\text{Unif}[-1,1]$, and $α_1 \geq α_2 \geq \ldots $ is a non-increasing sequence of non-negative reals with $\|α\|_2<1$. We obtain a similar result for random projections of the uniform distribution on the discrete cube $\{-1,+1\}^n$.

Expected nodal volume for non-Gaussian random band-limited functions

The asymptotic law for the expected nodal volume of random non-Gaussian monochromatic band-limited functions is determined in vast generality. Our methods combine microlocal analytic techniques and modern probability theory. A particularly challenging obstacle needed to overcome is the possible concentration of nodal volume on a small proportion of the manifold, requiring solutions in both disciplines. As for the fine aspects of the distribution of nodal volume, such as its variance, it is expected that the non-Gaussian monochromatic functions behave qualitatively differently compared to their Gaussian counterpart, with some conjectures been put forward.

Dynamics of zeroes under repeated differentiation

Consider a random polynomial $P_n$ of degree $n$ whose roots are independent random variables sampled according to some probability distribution $μ_0$ on the complex plane $\mathbb C$. It is natural to conjecture that, for a fixed $t\in [0,1)$ and as $n\to\infty$, the zeroes of the $[tn]$-th derivative of $P_n$ are distributed according to some measure $μ_t$ on $\mathbb C$. Assuming either that $μ_0$ is concentrated on the real line or that it is rotationally invariant, Steinerberger [Proc. AMS, 2019] and O'Rourke and Steinerberger [arXiv:1910.12161] derived nonlocal transport equations for the density of roots. We introduce a different method to treat such problems. In the rotationally invariant case, we obtain a closed formula for $ψ(x,t)$, the asymptotic density of the radial parts of the roots of the $[tn]$-th derivative of $P_n$. Although its derivation is non-rigorous, we provide numerical evidence for its correctness and prove that it solves the PDE of O'Rourke and Steinerberger. Moreover, we present several examples in which the solution is fully explicit (including the special case in which the initial condition $ψ(x,0)$ is an arbitrary convex combination of delta functions) and analyze some properties of the solutions such as the behavior of void annuli and circles of zeroes. As an additional support for the correctness of the method, we show that a similar method, applied to the case when $μ_0$ is concentrated on the real line, gives a correct result which is known to have an interpretation in terms of free probability.

The $β$-Delaunay tessellation IV: Mixing properties and central limit theorems

Various mixing properties of $β$-, $β'$- and Gaussian Delaunay tessellations in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ are studied. It is shown that these tessellation models are absolutely regular, or $β$-mixing. In the $β$- and the Gaussian case exponential bounds for the absolute regularity coefficients are found. In the $β'$-case these coefficients show a polynomial decay only. In the background are new and strong concentration bounds on the radius of stabilization of the underlying construction. Using a general device for absolutely regular stationary random tessellations, central limit theorems for a number of geometric parameters of $β$- and Gaussian Delaunay tessellations are established. This includes the number of $k$-dimensional faces and the $k$-volume of the $k$-sk

On Expected Face Numbers of Random Beta and Beta' Polytopes

The random beta polytope is defined as the convex hull of $n$ independent random points with the density proportional to $(1-\|x\|^2)^β$ on the $d$-dimensional unit ball, where $β>-1$ is a parameter. Similarly, the random beta' polytope is defined as the convex hull of $n$ independent random points with the density proportional to $(1+\|x\|^2)^{-β}$ on $\mathbb R^d$, where $β>\frac d2$. In a previous work [Angles of random simplices and face numbers of random polytopes, Adv. Math., 380 (2021), 107612], we established exact and explicit formulae for the expected $f$-vectors of these random polytopes in terms of certain definite integrals. In the present paper, we use purely algebraic manipulations to derive several identities for these integrals which yield alternative formulae for the expected $f$-vectors. Similar algebraic manipulations apply to Stirling numbers and yield the following identity: $$ \sum_{s=0}^k \genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{n-s}{d-s} (d-s) \genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{d-s}{k-s} = \sum_{s=0}^k (-1)^s \genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{n-s}{d} \genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{d+1}{k-s} = \sum_{s=0}^{d-k} (-1)^s \genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{n+1}{d-s} \genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{d-s}{k}. $$

Conical tessellations associated with Weyl chambers

We consider $d$-dimensional random vectors $Y_1,\dots,Y_n$ that satisfy a mild general position assumption a.s. The hyperplanes \begin{align*} (Y_i-Y_j)^\perp\;\; (1\le i<j\le n). \end{align*} generate a conical tessellation of the Euclidean $d$-space which is closely related to the Weyl chambers of type $A_{n-1}$. We determine the number of cones in this tessellation and show that it is a.s. constant. For a random cone chosen uniformly at random from this random tessellation, we compute expectations for a general series of geometric functionals. These include the face numbers, as well as the conic intrinsic volumes and the conic quermassintegrals. Under the additional assumption of exchangeability on $Y_1,\ldots,Y_n$, the same is done for the dual random cones which have the same distribution as the positive hull of $Y_1-Y_2,\ldots, Y_{n-1}-Y_n$ conditioned on the event that this positive hull is not equal to $\mathbb R^d$. All these expectations turn out to be distribution-free. Similarly, we consider the conical tessellation induced by the hyperplanes \begin{align*} (Y_i+Y_j)^\perp\;\; (1 \le i<j\le n),\quad (Y_i-Y_j)^\perp\;\; (1\le i<j\le n),\quad Y_i^\perp\;\; (1\le i\le n) \end{align*} This tessellation is closely related to the Weyl chambers of type $B_n$. We compute the number of cones in this tessellation and the expectations of various geometric functionals for random cones drawn from this random tessellation. The main ingredient in the proofs is a connection between the number of faces of the tessellation and the number of faces of the Weyl chambers of the corresponding type that are intersected by a certain linear subspace in general position.

Random cones in high dimensions II: Weyl cones

We consider two models of random cones together with their duals. Let $Y_1,\dots,Y_n$ be independent and identically distributed random vectors in $\mathbb R^d$ whose distribution satisfies some mild condition. The random cones $G_{n,d}^A$ and $G_{n,d}^B$ are defined as the positive hulls $\text{pos}\{Y_1-Y_2,\dots,Y_{n-1}-Y_n\}$, respectively $\text{pos}\{Y_1-Y_2,\dots,Y_{n-1}-Y_n,Y_n\}$, conditioned on the event that the respective positive hull is not equal to $\mathbb R^d$. We prove limit theorems for various expected geometric functionals of these random cones, as $n$ and $d$ tend to infinity in a coordinated way. This includes limit theorems for the expected number of $k$-faces and the $k$-th conic quermassintegrals, as $n$, $d$ and sometimes also $k$ tend to infinity simultaneously. Moreover, we uncover a phase transition in high dimensions for the expected statistical dimension for both models of random cones.

The $β$-Delaunay tessellation III: Kendall's problem and limit theorems in high dimensions

The $β$-Delaunay tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ is a generalization of the classical Poisson-Delaunay tessellation. As a first result of this paper we show that the shape of a weighted typical cell of a $β$-Delaunay tessellation, conditioned on having large volume, is close to the shape of a regular simplex in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$. This generalizes earlier results of Hug and Schneider about the typical (non-weighted) Poisson-Delaunay simplex. Second, the asymptotic behaviour of the volume of weighted typical cells in high-dimensional $β$-Delaunay tessellation is analysed, as $d\to\infty$. In particular, various high dimensional limit theorems, such as quantitative central limit theorems as well as moderate and large deviation principles, are derived.

A functional limit theorem for nested Karlin's occupancy scheme generated by discrete Weibull-like distributions

Let $(p_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be a discrete probability distribution for which the counting function $x\mapsto \#\{k\in\mathbb{N}: p_k\geq 1/x\}$ belongs to the de Haan class $Π$. Consider a deterministic weighted branching process generated by $(p_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$. A nested Karlin's occupancy scheme is the sequence of Karlin balls-in-boxes schemes in which boxes of the $j$th level, $j=1,2,\ldots$ are identified with the $j$th generation individuals and the hitting probabilities of boxes are identified with the corresponding weights. The collection of balls is the same for all generations, and each ball starts at the root and moves along the tree of the deterministic weighted branching process according to the following rule: transition from a mother box to a daughter box occurs with probability given by the ratio of the daughter and mother weights. Assuming there are $n$ balls, denote by $\mathcal{K}_n(j)$ the number of occupied (ever hit) boxes in the $j$th level. For each $j\in\mathbb{N}$, we prove a functional limit theorem for the vector-valued process $(\mathcal{K}^{(1)}_{\lfloor e^{T+u}\rfloor},\ldots, \mathcal{K}^{(j)}_{\lfloor e^{T+u}\rfloor})_{u\in\mathbb{R}}$, properly normalized and centered, as $T\to\infty$. The limit is a vector-valued process whose components are independent stationary Gaussian processes. An integral representation of the limit process is obtained.

Angle sums of Schläfli orthoschemes

We consider the simplices $$ K_n^A=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n+1}:x_1\ge x_2\ge \ldots\ge x_{n+1},x_1-x_{n+1}\le 1,x_1+\ldots+x_{n+1}=0\} $$ and $$ K_n^B=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^n:1\ge x_1\ge x_2\ge \ldots\ge x_n\ge 0\}, $$ which are called the Schläfli orthoschemes of types $A$ and $B$, respectively. We describe the tangent cones at their $j$-faces and compute explicitly the sum of the conic intrinsic volumes of these tangent cones at all $j$-faces of $K_n^A$ and $K_n^B$. This setting contains sums of external and internal angles of $K_n^A$ and $K_n^B$ as special cases. The sums are evaluated in terms of Stirling numbers of both kinds. We generalize these results to finite products of Schläfli orthoschemes of type $A$ and $B$ and, as a probabilistic consequence, derive formulas for the expected number of $j$-faces of the Minkowski sums of the convex hulls of a finite number of Gaussian random walks and random bridges. Furthermore, we evaluate the analogous angle sums for the tangent cones of Weyl chambers of types $A$ and $B$ and finite products thereof.

The typical cell of a Voronoi tessellation on the sphere

The typical cell of a Voronoi tessellation generated by $n+1$ uniformly distributed random points on the $d$-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb S^d$ is studied. Its $f$-vector is identified in distribution with the $f$-vector of a beta' polytope generated by $n$ random points in $\mathbb R^d$. Explicit formulae for the expected $f$-vector are provided for any $d$ and the low-dimensional cases $d\in\{2,3,4\}$ are studied separately. This implies an explicit formula for the total number of $k$-dimensional faces in the spherical Voronoi tessellation as well.

Phase transition for the volume of high-dimensional random polytopes

The beta polytope $P_{n,d}^β$ is the convex hull of $n$ i.i.d. random points distributed in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^d$ according to a density proportional to $(1-\lVert{x}\rVert^2)^β$ if $β>-1$ (in particular, $β=0$ corresponds to the uniform distribution in the ball), or uniformly on the unit sphere if $β=-1$. We show that the expected normalized volumes of high-dimensional beta polytopes exhibit a phase transition and we describe its shape. We derive analogous results for the intrinsic volumes of beta polytopes and, when $β=0$, their number of vertices.

The $β$-Delaunay tessellation II: The Gaussian limit tessellation

We study the weak convergence of $β$- and $β'$-Delaunay tessellations in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ that were introduced in part I of this paper, as $β\to\infty$. The limiting stationary simplicial random tessellation, which is called the Gaussian-Delaunay tessellation, is characterized in terms of a space-time paraboloid hull process in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times\mathbb{R}$. The latter object has previously appeared in the analysis of the number of shocks in the solution of the inviscid Burgers' equation and the description of the local asymptotic geometry of Gaussian random polytopes. In this paper it is used to define a new stationary random simplicial tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$. As for the $β$- and $β'$-Delaunay tessellation, the distribution of volume-power weighted typical cells in the Gaussian-Delaunay tessellation is explicitly identified, establishing thereby a new bridge to Gaussian random simplices. Also major geometric characteristics of these cells such as volume moments, expected angle sums and also the cell intensities of the Gaussian-Delaunay tessellation are investigated.

Fluctuations of the Magnetization for Ising models on Erdős-Rényi Random Graphs -- the Regimes of Low Temperature and External Magnetic Field

We continue our analysis of Ising models on the (directed) Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(N,p)$. We prove a quenched Central Limit Theorem for the magnetization and describe the fluctuations of the log-partition function. In the current note we consider the low temperature regime $β>1$ and the case when an external magnetic field is present. In both cases, we assume that $p=p(N)$ satisfies $p^3N \to \infty$.

Convex cones spanned by regular polytopes

We study three families of polyhedral cones whose sections are regular simplices, cubes, and crosspolytopes. We compute solid angles and conic intrinsic volumes of these cones. We show that several quantities appearing in stochastic geometry can be expressed through these conic intrinsic volumes. A list of such quantities includes internal and external solid angles of regular simplices and crosspolytopes, the probability that a (symmetric) Gaussian random polytope or the Gaussian zonotope contains a given point, the expected number of faces of the intersection of a regular polytope with a random linear subspace passing through its centre, and the expected number of faces of the projection of a regular polytope onto a random linear subspace.
