Determination of chaotic behaviour in time series generated by charged particle motion around magnetized Schwarzschild black holes

We study behaviour of ionized region of a Keplerian disk orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole immersed in an asymptotically uniform magnetic field. In dependence on the magnetic parameter ${\cal B}$, and inclination angle $θ$ of the disk plane with respect to the magnetic field direction, the charged particles of the ionized disk can enter three regimes: a) regular oscillatory motion, b) destruction due to capture by the magnetized black hole, c) chaotic regime of the motion. In order to study transition between the regular and chaotic type of the charged particle motion, we generate time series of the solution of equations of motion under various conditions, and study them by non-linear (box counting, correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent, recurrence analysis, machine learning) methods of chaos determination. We demonstrate that the machine learning method appears to be the most efficient in determining the chaotic region of the $θ-r$ space. We show that the chaotic character of the ionized particle motion increases with the inclination angle. For the inclination angles $θ\sim 0$ whole the ionized internal part of the Keplerian disk is captured by the black hole.

Epicyclic oscillations in the Hartle-Thorne external geometry

The external Hartle-Thorne geometry, which describes the space-time outside a slowly-rotating compact star, is characterized by the gravitational mass $M$, angular momentum $J$ and quadrupole moment $Q$ of the star and gives a convenient description which, for the rotation frequencies of more than 95 % of known pulsars, is sufficiently accurate for most purposes. We focus here on the motion of particles in these space-times, presenting a detailed systematic analysis of the frequency properties of radial and vertical epicyclic motion and of orbital motion. Our investigation is motivated by X-ray observations of binary systems containing a rotating neutron star which is accreting matter from its binary companion. In these systems, twin high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations are sometimes observed with a frequency ratio approaching $3:2$ or $5:4$ and these may be explained by models involving the orbital and epicyclic frequencies of quasi-circular geodesic motion. In our analysis, we use realistic equations of state for the stellar matter and proceed in a self-consistent way, following the Hartle-Thorne approach in calculating both the corresponding values of $Q$, $M$ and $J$ for the stellar model and the properties of the surrounding spacetime. Our results are then applied to a range of geodetical models for QPOs. A key feature of our study is that it implements the recently-discovered universal relations among neutron star parameters so that the results can be directly used for models with different masses $M$, radii $R$ and rotational frequencies $f_\mathrm{rot}$.

Gravitational lensing around Kehagias-Sfetsos compact objects surrounded by plasma

We study the optical properties of the Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS) compact objects, characterized by the "Hořava" parameter $ω_{_{KS}}$, in the presence of plasma, considering its homogeneous or power-law density distribution. The strong effects of both "Hořava" parameter $ω_{_{KS}}$ and plasma on the shadow cast by the KS compact objects are demonstrated. Using the weak field approximation, we investigate the gravitational lensing effect. Strong dependence of the deflection angle of the light on both the "Hořava" and plasma parameter is explicitly shown. The magnification of image source due to the weak gravitational lensing is given for both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous plasma.

Constraining the charge of the Galactic centre black hole

In this contribution, we summarize our results concerning the observational constraints on the electric charge associated with the Galactic centre black hole - Sgr A*. According to the no-hair theorem, every astrophysical black hole, including supermassive black holes, is characterized by at most three classical, externally observable parameters - mass, spin, and the electric charge. While the mass and the spin have routinely been measured by several methods, the electric charge has usually been neglected, based on the arguments of efficient discharge in astrophysical plasmas. From a theoretical point of view, the black hole can attain charge due to the mass imbalance between protons and electrons in fully ionized plasmas, which yields about $\sim 10^8\,{\rm C}$ for Sgr A*. The second, induction mechanism concerns rotating Kerr black holes embedded in an external magnetic field, which leads to electric field generation due to the twisting of magnetic field lines. This electric field can be associated with the induced Wald charge, for which we calculate the upper limit of $\sim 10^{15}\,{\rm C}$ for Sgr A*. Although the maximum theoretical limit of $\sim 10^{15}\,{\rm C}$ is still 12 orders of magnitude smaller than the extremal charge of Sgr A*, we analyse a few astrophysical consequences of having a black hole with a small charge in the Galactic centre. Two most prominent ones are the effect on the X-ray bremsstrahlung profile and the effect on the position of the innermost stable circular orbit.

Relaxations of perturbations of spacetimes in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics

Three well known exact regular solutions of general relativity (GR) coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED), namely the Maxwellian, Bardeen and Hayward regular spacetimes, which can describe either a regular black hole or a geometry without horizons, have been considered. Relaxation times for the scalar, electromagnetic (EM) and gravitational perturbations of black holes (BHs) and no-horizon spacetimes have been estimated in comparison with the ones of the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetimes. It has been shown that the considered geometries in GR coupled to the NED have never vanishing circular photon orbits and on account of this fact these spacetimes always oscillate the EM perturbations with quasinormal frequencies (QNFs). Moreover we have shown that the EM perturbations in the eikonal regime can be a powerful tool to confirm that (i) the light rays do not follow null geodesics in the NED by the relaxation rates; (ii) if the underlying solution has a correct weak field limit to the Maxwell electrodynamics (LED) by the angular velocity of the circular photon orbit.

Mass of the active galactic nucleus black hole XMMUJ134736.6+173403

A recent study of the X-ray source XMMUJ134736.6+173403 has revealed a strong quasi-periodic modulation of the X-ray flux. The observation of two quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) that occur on a daily timescale and exhibit a 3:1 frequency ratio strongly supports the evidence for the presence of an active galactic nucleus black hole (AGN BH). Assuming the orbital origin of QPOs we calculate the upper and lower limit on AGN BH mass M arriving at $M\approx 10^7-10^9M_{\odot}$. Comparing that to mass estimates of other sources, MMUJ134736.6+173403 appears to be the most massive source with commensurable QPO frequencies, and its mass represents the current observational upper limit on AGN BH mass based on QPO observations. We note it will be crucial for the falsification of particular resonance models of QPOs whether only single QPO with frequency that completes the harmonic sequence 3:2:1 is found in this source, or whether there is a new different pair of QPOs with frequencies in the 3:2 ratio. The former case would agree with the prediction of the 3:2 epicyclic resonance model and black hole mass $M\approx(5a^2 + 8a + 8)\times 10^{7}M_{\odot}$, where a is a dimensionless BH spin.

Axially symmetric and static solutions of Einstein equations with self-gravitating scalar field

The exact axisymmetric and static solution of the Einstein equations coupled to axisymmetric and static gravitating scalar (or phantom) field is presented. The spacetimes modified by the scalar field are explicitly given for the so called $γ$-metric and Erez-Rosen metric with quadrupole moment $q$, influence of the additional deformation parameters $γ_*$ and $q_*$ generated by the scalar field is studied. It is shown that the null energy condition is satisfied for the phantom field, but it is not satisfied for the standard scalar field. The test particle motion in the both modified $γ$-metric and Erez-Rosen quadrupole metric is studied; the circular geodesics are determined, and near-circular trajectories are explicitly presented for characteristic values of the spacetime parameters. It is also demonstrated that the parameters $γ_*$ and $q_*$ have no influence on the test particle motion in the equatorial plane.

Spherical photon orbits in the field of Kerr naked singularities

For the Kerr naked singularity (KNS) spacetimes, we study properties of spherical photon orbits (SPOs) confined to constant Boyer-Lindquist radius r. Some new features of the SPOs are found, having no counterparts in the Kerr black hole (KBH) spacetimes, especially stable orbits that could be pure prograde/retrograde, or with turning point in the azimuthal direction. At r > 1 (r < 1) the covariant photon energy E > 0 (E < 0), at r = 1 there is E = 0. All unstable orbits must have E > 0. It is shown that the polar SPOs can exist only in the spacetimes with dimensionless spin a < 1.7996. Existence of closed SPOs with vanishing total change of the azimuth is demonstrated. Classification of the KNS and KBH spacetimes in dependence on their dimensionless spin a is proposed, considering the properties of the SPOs. For selected types of the KNS spacetimes, typical SPOs are constructed, including the closed paths. It is shown that the stable SPOs intersect the equatorial plane in a region of stable circular orbits of test particles, depending on the spin a. Relevance of this intersection for the Keplerian accretion discs is outlined and observational effects are estimated.

Light escape cones in local reference frames of Kerr-de Sitter black hole spacetimes and related black hole shadows

We construct the light escape cones of isotropic spot sources of radiation residing in special classes of reference frames in the Kerr-de Sitter (KdS) black hole spacetimes, namely, in the fundamental class of 'non-geodesic' locally non-rotating reference frames (LNRFs), and two classes of 'geodesic' frames, the radial geodesic frames (RGFs), both falling and escaping, and the frames related to the circular geodesic orbits (CGFs). We compare the cones constructed in a given position for the LNRFs, RGFs, and CGFs. We have shown that the photons locally counter-rotating relative to LNRFs with positive impact parameter and negative covariant energy are confined to the ergosphere region. Finally, we demonstrate that the light escaping cones govern the shadows of black holes located in front of a radiating screen, as seen by the observers in the considered frames. For shadows related to distant static observers the LNRFs are relevant.

Electromagnetic perturbations of black holes in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics: Polar perturbations

The \textit{axial} electromagnetic (EM) perturbations of the black hole (BH) solutions in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) were studied for both electrically and magnetically charged BHs, assuming that the EM perturbations do not alter the spacetime geometry in our preceding paper [Phys. Rev. D 97, 084058 (2018)]. Here, as a continuation of that work, the formalism for the \textit{polar} EM perturbations of the BHs in general relativity coupled to the NED is presented. We show that the quasinormal modes (QNMs) spectra of polar EM perturbations of the electrically and magnetically charged BHs in the NED are not isospectral, contrary to the case of the standard Reissner-Nordström BHs in the classical linear electrodynamics. It is shown by the detailed study of QNMs properties in the eikonal approximation that the EM perturbations can be a powerful tool to confirm that in the NED light ray does not follow the null geodesics of the spacetime. By specifying the NED model and comparing axial and polar EM perturbations of the electrically and magnetically charged BHs, it is shown that QNM spectra of the axial EM perturbations of magnetically (electrically) charged BH and polar EM perturbations of the electrically (magnetically) charged BH are isospectral, i.e., $ω_{mag}^{ax}\approxω_{el}^{pol}$ ($ω_{mag}^{pol}\approxω_{el}^{ax}$).

Comment on "Construction of regular black holes in general relativity"

We claim that the physical parameters of the constructed black hole solutions in general relativity (GR) coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) by Zhong-Ying Fan and Xiaobao Wang in the Paper [Phys. Rev. D 94, 124027 (2016)] are misinterpreted, despite the formalism being correct. We argue that because of these misinterpretations, the derived black hole solutions and the Lagrangian densities presented in that paper are slightly inconsistent. In this comment, we present complete black hole solutions of the given Lagrangian densities which correct the interpretation of the physical parameters of the constructed black hole solutions and lead to the correct treatment and weak field limits of the physical parameters of the constructed solutions.

Orbital widening due to radiation reaction around a magnetized black hole

Radiation reaction acting on a charged particle moving at a stable circular orbit of a magnetized black hole can lead to the shift of the orbital radius outwards from the black hole. The effect causes increase of the energy and angular momentum of the particle measured by an observer at rest at infinity. In this note we show that "widening" of such orbits is independent of the field configuration, however, it appears only in the cases with the external Lorentz force acting outwards from the black hole. This condition corresponds to $q L B > 0$, where $q$ and $L$ are the charge and angular momentum of the particle and $B$ is intensity of the external magnetic field. As examples of the orbital widening we consider two scenarios with an external homogeneous magnetic field and a magnetic dipole field generated by a current loop around a Schwarzschild black hole. We show that the orbital widening is accompanied by quasi-harmonic oscillations of the particle which are considerably large in the magnetic dipole fields. We also estimate the timescales of orbital widening from which it follows that the effect can be relevant in the vicinity of stellar mass black holes.

Electromagnetic perturbations of black holes in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics

The electromagnetic (EM) perturbations of the black hole solutions in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) are studied for both electrically and magnetically charged black holes, assuming that the EM perturbations do not alter the spacetime geometry. It is shown that the effective potentials of the electrically and magnetically charged black holes related to test perturbative NED EM fields are related to the effective metric governing the photon motion, contrary to the effective potential of the linear electrodynamic (Maxwell) field that is related to the spacetime metric. Consequently, corresponding quasinormal (QN) frequencies differ as well. As a special case, we study new family of the NED black hole solutions which tend in the weak field limit to the Maxwell field, giving the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole solution. We compare the NED Maxwellian black hole QN spectra with the RN black hole QN spectra.

The distinguishing signature of Magnetic Penrose Process

In this Letter, we wish to point out that the distinguishing feature of Magnetic Penrose process (MPP) is its super high efficiency exceeding $100\%$ (which was established in mid 1980s for discrete particle accretion) of extraction of rotational energy of a rotating black hole electromagnetically for a magnetic field of milli Gauss order. Another similar process, which is also driven by electromagnetic field, is Blandford-Znajek mechanism (BZ), which could be envisaged as high magnetic field limit MPP as it requires threshold magnetic field of order $10^4$G. Recent simulation studies of fully relativistic magnetohydrodynamic flows have borne out super high efficiency signature of the process for high magnetic field regime; viz BZ. We would like to make a clear prediction that similar simulation studies of MHD flows for low magnetic field regime, where BZ would be inoperative, would also have super efficiency.

Charged string loops in Reissner-Nordström black hole background

We study the motion of current carrying charged string loops in the Reissner-Nordström black hole background combining the gravitational and electromagnetic field. Introducing new electromagnetic interaction between central charge and charged string loop makes the string loop equations of motion to be non-integrable even in the flat spacetime limit, but it can be governed by an effective potential even in the black hole background. We classify different types of the string loop trajectories using effective potential approach, and we compare the innermost stable string loop positions with loci of the charged particle innermost stable orbits. We examine string loop small oscillations around minima of the string loop effective potential, and we plot radial profiles of the string loop oscillation frequencies for both the radial and vertical modes. We construct charged string loop quasi-periodic oscillations model and we compare it with observed data from microquasars GRO 1655-40, XTE 1550-564, and GRS 1915+105. We also study the acceleration of current carrying string loops along the vertical axis and the string loop ejection from RN black hole neighbourhood, taking also into account the electromagnetic interaction.

Radiation reaction of charged particles orbiting magnetized Schwarzschild black hole

In many astrophysically relevant situations radiation reaction force acting upon a charge can not be neglected and the question arises about the location and stability of circular orbits in such regime. Motion of point charge with radiation reaction in flat spacetime is described by Lorenz-Dirac (LD) equation, while in curved spacetime -- by DeWitt-Brehme (DWB) equation containing the Ricci term and the tail term. We show that for the motion of elementary particles in vacuum metrics the DWB equation can be reduced to the covariant form of the LD equation which we use here. Generically, the LD equation is plagued by runaway solutions, so we discuss computational ways to avoid this problem in constructing numerical solutions. We also use the first iteration of the covariant LD equation which is the covariant Landau-Lifshitz equation, comparing results of these two approaches and showing smallness of the third-order Schott term in the ultrarelativistic case. We calculate the corresponding energy and angular momentum loss of a particle and study the damping of charged particle oscillations around an equilibrium radius. We find that depending on the orientation of the Lorentz force, the oscillating charged particle either spirals down to the black hole, or stabilizes the circular orbit by decaying its oscillations. The later case leads to an interesting new result of shifting of the particle orbit outwards from the black hole. We also discuss the astrophysical relevance of the presented approach and provide estimations of the main parameters of the model.

Classical corrections to black hole entropy in $d$ dimensions: a rear window to quantum gravity?

We provide a simple derivation of the corrections for Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole entropy without knowing the details of quantum gravity. We will follow Bekenstein, Wheeler and Jaynes ideas, using summations techniques without calculus approximations, to directly find logarithmic corrections to well-known entropy formula for black holes. Our approach is free from pathological behaviour giving negative entropy for small values of black hole mass $M$. With the aid of Universality principle we will argue that this purely classical approach could open a window for exploring properties of quantum gravity.

Possible signature of magnetic fields related to quasi-periodic oscillation observed in microquasars

The study of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux observed in the stellar-mass black hole binaries can provide a powerful tool for testing of the phenomena occurring in strong gravity regime. The high frequency (HF) QPOs usually come in pairs of double peaks which have a frequency ratio close to $3:2$. In addition to HF QPOs, some sources display simultaneous existence of the low frequency (LF) QPOs in Fourier power spectra. We demonstrate that the explanation of these phenomena can be well related to the epicyclic oscillations of charged particles in accretion disks orbiting Kerr black holes immersed in external large-scale magnetic fields. Magnetized versions of the standard geodesic models of QPOs can explain the observationally fixed data from the three microquasars. We perform a successful fitting of the HF QPOs observed in three microquasars, GRS 1915+105, XTE 1550-564 and GRO 1655-40, containing black holes, for magnetised versions of both epicyclic rezonance and relativistic precession models and discuss the corresponding constraints of parameters of the model, which are the mass and spin of black hole and the parameter related to the external magnetic field. Assuming the main source of synchrotron radiation producing X-rays are the relativistic electrons, we estimate the magnetic field in the vicinity of the black hole in the three sources to be of order $10^{-5}$ Gs which can serve as possible signature of the Galactic magnetic field magnitude. For heavier particles (protons, ions) larger magnetic fields are necessary for fitting the data.
