Note on the character of the generic rotating charged regular black holes in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics

We demonstrate that the generic charged rotating regular black hole solutions of general relativity coupled to non-linear electrodynamics, obtained by using the alternate Newman-Janis algorithm, introduces only small (on level $10^{-2}$) inconsistency in the behaviour of the electrodynamics Lagrangian. This approves application of these analytic and simple solutions as astrophysically relevant, sufficiently precise approximate solutions describing rotating regular black holes.

Particle collisions and optical effects in the mining Kerr--Newman spacetimes

We study ultra-high-energy particle collisions and optical effects in the extraordinary class of mining braneworld Kerr-Newman (KN) naked singularity spacetimes, predicting extremely high efficiency of Keplerian accretion, and compare the results to those related to the other classes of the KN naked singularity and black hole spacetimes. We demonstrate that in the mining KN spacetimes the ultra-high centre-of-mass energy occurs for collisions of particles following the extremely-low-energy stable circular geodesics of the \uvozovky{mining regime}, colliding with large family of incoming particles, e.g., those infalling from the marginally stable counter-rotating circular geodesics. This is qualitatively different situation in comparison to the standard KN naked singularity or black hole spacetimes where the collisional ultra-high centre-of-mass energy can be obtained only in the near-extreme spacetimes. We also show that observers following the stable circular geodesics of the mining regime can register extremely blue-shifted radiation incoming from the Universe, and see strongly deformed sky due to highly relativistic motion along such stable orbits. The strongly blue-shifted radiation could be thus a significant source of energy for such orbiting observers.

Scalar perturbations of nonsingular nonrotating black holes in conformal gravity

We study scalar and electromagnetic perturbations of a family of nonsingular nonrotating black hole spacetimes that are solutions in a large class of conformally invariant theories of gravity. The effective potential for scalar perturbations depends on the exact form of the scaling factor. Electromagnetic perturbations do not feel the scaling factor, and the corresponding quasinormal mode spectrum is the same as in the Schwarzschild metric. We find that these black hole metrics are stable under scalar and electromagnetic perturbations. Assuming that the quasinormal mode spectrum for scalar perturbations is not too different from that for gravitational perturbations, we can expect that the calculation of the quasinormal mode spectrum and the observation with gravitational wave detectors of quasinormal modes from astrophysical black holes can constrain the scaling factor and test these solutions.

Super-spinning compact objects and models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations observed in Galactic microquasars. II. Forced resonances

In our previous work (Paper I) we applied several models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) to estimate the spin of the central compact object in three Galactic microquasars assuming the possibility that the central compact body is a super-spinning object (or a naked singularity) with external spacetime described by Kerr geometry with a dimensionless spin parameter $a\equiv cJ/GM^2>1$. Here we extend our consideration, and in a consistent way investigate implications of a set of ten resonance models so far discussed only in the context of $a<1$. The same physical arguments as in Paper I are applied to these models, i.e. only a small deviation of the spin estimate from $a=1$, $a\gtrsim 1$, is assumed for a favoured model. For five of these models that involve Keplerian and radial epicyclic oscillations we find the existence of a unique specific QPO excitation radius. Consequently, there is a simple behaviour of dimensionless frequency $M\timesν_{U}(a)$ represented by a single continuous function having solely one maximum close to $a\gtrsim1$. Only one of these models is compatible with the expectation of $a\gtrsim 1$. The other five models that involve the radial and vertical epicyclic oscillations imply the existence of multiple resonant radii. This signifies a more complicated behaviour of $M\timesν_{U}(a)$ that cannot be represented by single functions. Each of these five models is compatible with the expectation of $a\gtrsim 1$.

Energy conditions of non-singular black hole spacetimes in conformal gravity

Conformal gravity can elegantly solve the problem of spacetime singularities present in Einstein's gravity. For every physical spacetime, there is an infinite family of conformally-equivalent singularity-free metrics. In the unbroken phase, every non-singular metric is equivalent and can be used to infer the physical properties of the spacetime. In the broken phase, a Higgs-like mechanism should select a certain vacuum, which thus becomes the physical one. However, in the absence of the complete theoretical framework we do not know how to select the right vacuum. In this paper, we study the energy conditions of non-singular black hole spacetimes obtained in conformal gravity assuming they are solutions of Einstein's gravity with an effective energy-momentum tensor. We check whether such conditions can be helpful to select the vacuum of the broken phase.

Slowly decaying resonances of massive scalar fields around Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes

We study in special limiting cases quasinormal modes of massive scalar fields in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole backgrounds. We determine the lower limit on the mass parameter of the scalar field that allows the waves with quasinormal frequencies to propagate to infinity, showing that it depends on the spacetime parameters only. Then we discuss in the large multipole number limit quasinormal modes, whose frequencies can be directly related to the unstable circular photon geodesics. In the large scalar mass approximation, we demonstrate the new interesting phenomenon of slowly decaying resonances, that are strongly related to the maximum of the effective potential of the massive scalar field, which is located at the static radius of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes, where the cosmic repulsion is just balanced by the black hole attraction.

Gravitational instability of polytropic spheres containing region of trapped null geodesics: a possible explanation of central supermassive black holes in galactic halos

We study behaviour of gravitational waves in the recently introduced general relativistic polytropic spheres containing a region of trapped null geodesics extended around radius of the stable null circular geodesic that can exist for the polytropic index $N>2.138$ and the relativistic parameter, giving ratio of the central pressure $p_\mathrm{c}$ to the central energy density $ρ_\mathrm{c}$, higher than $σ= 0.677$. In the trapping zones of such polytropes, the effective potential of the axial gravitational wave perturbations resembles those related to the ultracompact uniform density objects, giving thus similar long-lived axial gravitational modes. These long-lived linear perturbations are related to the stable circular null geodesic and due to additional non-linear phenomena could lead to conversion of the trapping zone to a black hole. We give in the eikonal limit examples of the long-lived gravitational modes, their oscillatory frequencies and slow damping rates, for the trapping zones of the polytropes with $N \in (2.138,4)$. However, in the trapping polytropes the long-lived damped modes exist only for very large values of the multipole number $\ell>50$, while for smaller values of $\ell$ the numerical calculations indicate existence of fast growing unstable axial gravitational modes. We demonstrate that for polytropes with $N \geq 3.78$, the trapping region is by many orders smaller than extension of the polytrope, and the mass contained in the trapping zone is about $10^{-3}$ of the total mass of the polytrope. Therefore, the gravitational instability of such trapping zones could serve as a model explaining creation of central supermassive black holes in galactic halos or galaxy clusters.

Comments on "Casimir Effect in the Kerr spacetime with Quintessence"

This comment is devoted to the recalculation of the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field in the Kerr black hole surrounded by quintessence derived in [B. Toshmatov, Z. Stuchlík and B. Ahmedov, Eur. Phys. J. Plus {\bf 132}, 98 (2017)] and its comparison with the results recently obtained in [V. B. Bezerra, M. S. Cunha, L. F. F. Freitas and C. R. Muniz, Mod. Phys. Lett. A {\bf 32}, 1750005 (2017)] in the spacetime [S. G. Ghosh, Eur. Phys. J. C {\bf 76}, 222 (2016)]. We have shown that in the more realistic spacetime which does not have the failures illustrated here, the Casimir energy is significantly bigger than that derived in [V. B. Bezerra, M. S. Cunha, L. F. F. Freitas and C. R. Muniz, Mod. Phys. Lett. A {\bf 32}, 1750005 (2017)], and the difference becomes crucial especially in the regions of near horizons of the spacetime.

Generic rotating regular black holes in general relativity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics

We construct regular rotating black hole and no-horizon spacetimes based on the recently introduced spherically symmetric generic regular black hole spacetimes related to electric or magnetic charge under nonlinear electrodynamics coupled to general relativity that for special values of the spacetime parameters reduce to the Bardeen and Hayward spacetimes. We show that the weak and strong energy conditions are violated inside the Cauchy horizons of these generic rotating black holes. We give the boundary between the rotating black hole and no-horizon spacetimes and determine the black hole horizons and the boundary of the ergosphere. We introduce the separated Carter equations for the geodesic motion in these rotating spacetimes. For the most interesting new class of the regular spacetimes, corresponding for magnetic charges to the Maxwell field in the weak field limit of the nonlinear electrodynamics, we determine the structure of the circular geodesics and discuss their properties. We study the epicyclic motion of a neutral particle moving along the stable circular orbits around the "Maxwellian" rotating regular black holes. We show that epicyclic frequencies measured by the distant observers and related to the oscillatory motion of the neutral test particle along the stable circular orbits around the rotating singular and regular Maxwellian black holes are always smaller than ones in the Kerr spacetime.

Polytropic spheres containing regions of trapped null geodesics

We demonstrate that in the framework of standard general relativity polytropic spheres with properly fixed polytropic index $n$ and relativistic parameter $σ$, giving ratio of the central pressure $p_\mathrm{c}$ to the central energy density $ρ_\mathrm{c}$, can contain region of trapped null geodesics. Such trapping polytropes can exist for $n > 2.138$ and they are generally much more extended and massive than the observed neutron stars. We show that in the $n$--$σ$ parameter space the region of allowed trapping increase with polytropic index for interval of physical interest $2.138 < n < 4$. Space extension of the region of trapped null geodesics increases with both increasing $n$ and $σ> 0.677$ from the allowed region. In order to relate the trapping phenomenon to astrophysically relevant situations, we restrict validity of the polytropic configurations to their extension $r_\mathrm{extr}$ corresponding to the gravitational mass $M \sim 2M_{\odot}$ of the most massive observed neutron stars. Then for the central density $ρ_\mathrm{c} \sim 10^{15}$~g\,cm$^{-3}$ the trapped regions are outside $r_\mathrm{extr}$ for all values of $2.138 < n < 4$, for the central density $ρ_\mathrm{c} \sim 5 \times 10^{15}$~g\,cm$^{-3}$ the whole trapped regions are located inside of $r_\mathrm{extr}$ for $2.138 < n < 3.1$, while for $ρ_\mathrm{c} \sim 10^{16}$~g\,cm$^{-3}$ the whole trapped regions are inside of $r_\mathrm{extr}$ for all values of $2.138 < n < 4$, guaranteeing astrophysically plausible trapping for all considered polytropes. The region of trapped null geodesics is located closely to the polytrope centre and could have relevant influence on cooling of such polytropes or for binding of gravitational waves in their interior.

Constraining models of twin peak quasi-periodic oscillations with realistic neutron star equations of state

Twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed in the X-ray power-density spectra of several accreting low-mass neutron star (NS) binaries. In our previous work we have considered several QPO models. We have identified and explored mass-angular-momentum relations implied by individual QPO models for the atoll source 4U 1636-53. In this paper we extend our study and confront QPO models with various NS equations of state (EoS). We start with simplified calculations assuming Kerr background geometry and then present results of detailed calculations considering the influence of NS quadrupole moment (related to rotationally induced NS oblateness) assuming Hartle-Thorne spacetimes. We show that the application of concrete EoS together with a particular QPO model yields a specific mass-angular-momentum relation. However, we demonstrate that the degeneracy in mass and angular momentum can be removed when the NS spin frequency inferred from the X-ray burst observations is considered. We inspect a large set of EoS and discuss their compatibility with the considered QPO models. We conclude that when the NS spin frequency in 4U 1636-53 is close to 580Hz we can exclude 51 from 90 of the considered combinations of EoS and QPO models. We also discuss additional restrictions that may exclude even more combinations. Namely, there are 13 EOS compatible with the observed twin peak QPOs and the relativistic precession model. However, when considering the low frequency QPOs and Lense-Thirring precession, only 5 EOS are compatible with the model.

General relativistic polytropes with a repulsive cosmological constant

Spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations of perfect fluid obeying a polytropic equation of state are studied in spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant. The configurations are specified in terms of three parameters---the polytropic index $n$, the ratio of central pressure and central energy density of matter $σ$, and the ratio of energy density of vacuum and central density of matter $λ$. The static equilibrium configurations are determined by two coupled first-order nonlinear differential equations that are solved by numerical methods with the exception of polytropes with $n=0$ corresponding to the configurations with a uniform distribution of energy density, when the solution is given in terms of elementary functions. The geometry of the polytropes is conveniently represented by embedding diagrams of both the ordinary space geometry and the optical reference geometry reflecting some dynamical properties of the geodesic motion. The polytropes are represented by radial profiles of energy density, pressure, mass, and metric coefficients. For all tested values of $n>0$, the static equilibrium configurations with fixed parameters $n$, $σ$, are allowed only up to a critical value of the cosmological parameter $λ_{\mathrm{c}}=λ_{\mathrm{c}}(n,σ)$. In the case of $n>3$, the critical value $λ_{\mathrm{c}}$ tends to zero for special values of $σ$. The gravitational potential energy and the binding energy of the polytropes are determined and studied by numerical methods. We discuss in detail the polytropes with an extension comparable to those of the dark matter halos related to galaxies, i.e., with extension $\ell > 100\,\mathrm{kpc}$ and mass $M > 10^{12}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. ...

Efficiency of the Keplerian accretion in the Braneworld Kerr--Newman Spacetimes and mining instability of some naked singularity spacetimes

We show that the~braneworld rotating Kerr--Newman black hole and naked singularity spacetimes with both positive and negative braneworld tidal charge parameter can be separated into fourteen classes according to properties of circular geodesics governing the~Keplerian accretion. We determine efficiency of the~Keplerian accretion disks for all braneworld Kerr--Newman spacetimes. We demonstrate occurrence of an~infinitely deep gravitational potential in Kerr--Newman naked singularity spacetimes having the~braneworld dimensionless tidal charge $b \in (1/4,1)$ and the~dimensionless spin $a \in (2\sqrt{b}-\sqrt{b(4b-1)},2\sqrt{b}+\sqrt{b(4b-1)})$, implying unbound efficiency of the~Keplerian accretion and possibility to extract the~whole naked singularity mass. Therefore, we call them braneworld "mining-unstable" Kerr--Newman naked singularity spacetimes. Fundamental restriction on the~relevance of the~extraordinary but fully classical phenomenon of the~mining instability is given by validity of the~assumption of geodesic motion of the~accreting matter.

Controversy of the GRO J1655-40 black hole mass and spin estimates and its possible solutions

Estimates of the black hole mass $M$ and dimensionless spin $a$ in the microquasar GRO J1655-40 implied by strong gravity effects related to the timing and spectral measurements are controversial, if the mass restriction determined by the dynamics related to independent optical measurements, $M_{\rm opt}=(5.4\pm0.3) M_{\odot}$, are applied. The timing measurements of twin high-frequency (HF) quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequency ratio $3:2$ and the simultaneously observed low-frequency (LF) QPO imply the spin in the range $a\in(0.27-0.29)$ if models based on the frequencies of the geodesic epicyclic motion are used to fit the timing measurements, and correlated creation of the twin HF QPOs and the LF QPO at a common radius is assumed. On the other hand, the spectral continuum method implies $a\in(0.65-0.75)$, and the Fe-line-profile method implies $a\in(0.94-0.98)$. This controversy can be cured, if we abandon the assumption of the occurrence of the twin HF QPOs and the simultaneously observed LF QPO at a common radius. We demonstrate that the epicyclic resonance model of the twin HF QPOs is able to predict the spin in agreement with the Fe-profile method, but no model based on the geodesic epicyclic frequencies can be in agreement with the spectral continuum method. We also show that the non-geodesic string loop oscillation model of twin HF QPOs predicts spin $a>0.3$ under the optical measurement limit on the black hole mass, in agreement with both the spectral continuum and Fe-profile methods.

Quasinormal frequencies of black hole in the braneworld

We have studied scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of the four-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-like black holes with a \textit{tidal charge} in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld. The quasinormal modes of these scalar, electromagnetic, as well as axial and polar gravitational perturbations, have been studied in both normal and eikonal regimes. Calculations have shown that the black holes on the Randall-Sundrum brane are stable against scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations. Moreover, we determine the grey body factor, giving transmission and reflection of the scattered waves through the scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational effective potentials. It has been shown that the scalar perturbative fields are the most favorite to the reflected as compared to the latter. With increasing value of the tidal charge ability of the all perturbative potentials to reflect the waves decreases. Our calculations in low- and high-frequency regimes have shown that black holes on the braneworld always have a bigger absorption cross section of massless scalar waves than the Schwarzschild and standard Reissner-Nordström black holes.

Models of quasi-periodic oscillations related to mass and spin of the GRO J1655-40 black hole

Frequencies of the three quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) modes observed simultaneously in the accreting black hole GRO J1655-40 are compared with the predictions of models. Models in which all three QPO signals are produced at the same radius are considered: these include different versions of relativistic precession, epicyclic resonance, tidal disruption, and warped disc models. Models that were originally proposed to interpret only the twin high-frequency QPOs are generalized here to interpret also the low-frequency QPO in terms of relativistic nodal precession. Inferred values of the black hole mass and spin from each QPO model are compared with the mass measured from optical observations and the spin inferred from X-ray spectroscopy techniques. We find that along with the relativistic precession model predicting $M=(5.3\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.286\pm0.004$, the so-called total precession model ($M=(5.5\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.276\pm0.003$), and the resonance epicyclic model with beat frequency ($M=(5.1\pm0.1)~M_{\odot}, a=0.274\pm0.003$) also satisfy the optical mass test. We compare our results with those inferred from X-ray spectral measurements.

Mass of intermediate black hole in the source M82 X-1 restricted by models of twin high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations

We apply the relativistic precession (RP) model with its variants and the resonance epicyclic model with its variants, based on the frequencies of the geodesic epicyclic motion in the field of a Kerr black hole, to put limits on the mass of the black hole in the ultraluminous X-ray source M82 X-1 demonstrating twin high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) with the frequency ratio near 3:2. The mass limits implied by the geodesic HF QPO models are compared to those obtained due to the model of string loop oscillations around a stable equilibrium position. Assuming the whole range of the black hole dimensionless spin, 0 < a < 1, the restrictions on the black hole mass related to the twin HF QPOs are widely extended and strongly model dependent; nevertheless, they give the lower limit M_{M82 X-1} > 130 M_{sun} confirming existence of an intermediate black hole in the M82 X-1 source. The upper limit given by one of the variants of the geodesic twin HF QPO models goes up to M_{M82 X-1}<1500 M_{sun}. The range 37-210 mHz of the low-frequency QPOs observed in the M82 X-1 source introduces additional restrictive limits on the black hole mass, if we model the low-frequency QPOs by nodal precession of the epicyclic motion. The nodal precession model restrictions combined with those implied by the geodesic models of the twin HF QPOs give allowed ranges of the M82 X-1 black hole parameters, namely 140 M_{sun}<M_{M82 X-1}<660 M_{sun} for the mass parameter and 0.05<a_{M82 X-1}<0.6 for the spin parameter.

Circular orbits and related quasi-harmonic oscillatory motion of charged particles around weakly magnetized rotating black holes

We study motion of charged particles in the field of a rotating black hole immersed into an external asymptotically uniform magnetic field, focusing on the epicyclic quasi-circular orbits near the equatorial plane. Separating the circular orbits into four qualitatively different classes according to the sign of the canonical angular momentum of the motion and the orientation of the Lorentz force, we analyse the circular orbits using the so called force formalism. We find the analytical solutions for the radial profiles of velocity, specific angular momentum and specific energy of the circular orbits in dependence on the black hole dimensionless spin and the magnetic field strength. The innermost stable circular orbits are determined for all four classes of the circular orbits. The stable circular orbits with outward oriented Lorentz force can extend to radii lower than the radius of the corresponding photon circular geodesic. We calculate the frequencies of the harmonic oscillatory motion of the charged particles in the radial and vertical directions related to the equatorial circular orbits and study the radial profiles of the radial, $ω_\mir$, vertical, $ω_\mit$, and orbital, $ω_\mip$, frequencies, finding significant differences in comparison to the epicyclic geodesic circular motion. The most important new phenomenon is existence of toroidal charged particle epicyclic motion with $ω_\mir \sim ω_{\mit} >> ω_{\mip}$ that could occur around retrograde circular orbits with outward oriented Lorentz force. We demonstrate that for the rapidly rotating black holes the role of the 'Wald induced charge' can be relevant.
