Data acquisition from high-rate detectors at MAX IV

At MAX IV pixelated area detectors are operated at high frame rates to take advantage of the X-ray beam properties available from the fourth generation synchrotron in scattering, diffraction and imaging applications. A variety of photon counting and charge integrating detectors and sCMOS cameras have been integrated into a common data acquisition (DAQ) system in which data are streamed to a central Kubernetes cluster, mounting an IBM Storage Scale (GPFS) file system. The DAQ system provides live feedback from the detectors/cameras and extends to enable on-the-fly data processing. Control system integration via Tango provides a standardised single interface for controlling all DAQ components. Starting from an overview of the detector types in use, we describe the design and implementation of the MAX~IV detector-DAQ system and report a quantitative study of its performance in terms of data throughput and detector operating rates.

Orthogonal lattice distortions inside crystalline Si upon sub-threshold femtosecond laser-induced excitation

Material processing with femtosecond lasers has attracted enormous attention because of its potential for technology and industrial applications. In parallel, time-resolved x-ray diffraction has been successfully used to study ultrafast structural distortion dynamics in semiconductor thin films or surface layers. However, real-world processing applications mostly are concerned with bulk materials, which prevents the use of x-ray surface based techniques. For processing applications, a fast and depth-sensitive probe is needed. To address this, we present a novel technique based on ultrafast x-ray dynamical diffraction (UDD) capable of imaging transient strain distributions inside bulk crystals upon laser excitation. This pump-probe technique provides a complete picture of thetemporal evolution of ultrafast distorted lattice depth profiles. We demonstrate the potential of UDD by studying a thin Si single crystal upon single pulse femtosecond optical excitation. Our study reveals that below the melting threshold strong lattice distortions not only longitudinal, but also transversal to the propagation of the strain wave appear on picosecond time scales along the single crystal. The observation of this transversal deformation after laser excitation contradicts previous work that were not able to observed it, what could be related to the high sensitivity of dynamical diffraction with respect to the lattice distortions. The speed of propagation of this ultrafast transversal strain deformation is observed to be slower to the longitudinal sound speed for Si as described in the bibliography.

Measurement of Dosimetrical Cross Sections with 14.05 MeV Neutrons From Compact Neutron Generator

Dosimetry cross sections are fundamental quantities necessary for neutron dosimetry using the neutron activation method. It is worth noting that the uncertainty in cross sections is the major source of uncertainty in calculational predictions using nuclear data in simulations thus, cross section validation is a key issue in any aims for refinement of any predictions. A small compact neutron generator is a promising tool for performing integral experiments and even for differential experiments. This paper deals with the measurement of the differential dosimetry cross sections using a small compact D-T neutron generator with 14.05 MeV neutron emission (10E8 n/s into 4pi). Achieving measurable activation at such a low flux field is allowed by using a larger amount of activation material placed in close measurement geometry during decay gamma measurement. The experimentally determined cross sections are in good agreement with the cross sections in the IRDFF-II dosimetry library. The comparison with other nuclear data libraries was performed as well. Its worth noting, the mean standard deviation in IRDFF-II library is about 4 %, while in case of other data libraries they are from 5.5 % - 7.5 %. This result can be understood as a validation of IRDFF-II using 14.05 MeV neutrons and also a confirmation of the applicability of small compact generators in the measurement of activation cross sections.

Linearized and Compensated Interferometric System for High-Velocity Traceable Length Calibration on a Metre Scale

We report on a traceable calibration system for a 3500mm-long console that carries a measurement system for inspecting the diameter of a circular reactor chassis. The system uses two single-pass laser interferometers with homodyne fringe detection for measurement in two degrees of freedom. The hybrid FPGA-microcontroller control module carries out the fringe detection together with the application-specific scale linearization approach and the compensation of environmental influences such as thermal elongation and the refractive index of air fluctuations. We demonstrated the system feasibility with an accuracy of a few microns and translation velocity higher than 0:1 metre per second.

Powder diffraction in Bragg-Brentano geometry with straight linear detectors

A common way of speeding up powder diffraction measurements is the use of one or two dimensional detectors. This usually goes along with worse resolution and asymmetric peak profiles. In this work the influence of a straight linear detector on the resolution function in the Bragg-Brentano focusing geometry is discussed. Due to the straight nature of most modern detectors geometrical defocusing occurs which heavily influences the line shape of diffraction lines at low angles. An easy approach to limit the resolution degrading effects is presented. The presented algorithm selects an adaptive range of channels of the linear detector at low angles, resulting in increased resolution. At higher angles still the whole linear detector is used and the data collection remains fast. Using this algorithm a well-behaved resolution function is obtained in the full angular range, whereas using the full linear detector the resolution function varies within one pattern which hinders line shape and Rietveld analysis.
