Optical effects related to Keplerian discs orbiting Kehagias-Sfetsos naked singularities

We demonstrate possible optical signatures of the Kehagias-Sfetsos naked singularity spacetimes representing spherically symmetric vacuum solution of the modified Hořava gravity. In such spacetimes, accretion structures significantly different from those present in the standard black hole spacetimes occur due to the "antigravity" effect causing existence of an internal static sphere surrounded by Keplerian discs. We focus our attention on the optical effects related to the Keplerian accretion discs, constructing the optical appearance of the Keplerian discs, the spectral continuum due to their thermal radiation, and spectral profiled lines generated in the innermost parts of such discs. The KS naked singularity signature is strongly encoded in the characteristics of predicted optical effects, especially in the case of the spectral continuum and spectral lines profiled by the strong gravity of the spacetimes, due to the region of the vanishing of the angular velocity gradient influencing the effectivity of the viscosity mechanism. We can conclude that optical signatures of the Kehagias-Sfetsos naked singularities can be well distinguished from the signatures of the standard black holes.

Influence of the cosmic repulsion on the MOND model of the Magellanic Cloud motion in the field of Milky Way

It has been recently shown that the cosmic repulsion can have a highly significant influence on the motion of Magellanic Clouds (MC) in the gravitational field of Milky Way, treated in the framework of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halo model. However, there is an alternative to the CDM halo explanation of the rotation curves in the periphery of spiral galaxies, based on MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). Therefore, we study the role of the cosmic repulsion in the framework of the MOND theory applied to determine the MC motion. Our results demonstrate that in the MOND framework the influence of the cosmic repulsion on the motion of both Small and Large MC is also highly significant, but it is of a different character than in the framework of the CDM halo model. Moreover, we demonstrate that the MC motion in the framework of the CDM halo and MOND models is subtantially different and can serve as a test of these fundamentally different approaches to the explanation of the phenomena related to galaxies and the motion of satellite galaxies.

Multi-resonance orbital model applied to high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations observed in Sgr A*

The multi-resonance orbital model of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) enables precise determination of the black hole dimensionless spin a if observed set of oscillations demonstrates three (or more) commensurable frequencies. The black hole spin is related to the frequency ratio only, while its mass M is related to the frequency magnitude. The model is applied to the triple frequency set of HF QPOs observed in Sgr A* source with frequency ratio 3:2:1. Acceptable versions of the multi-resonance model are determined by the restrictions on the Sgr A* supermassive black hole mass. Among the best candidates the version of strong resonances related to the black hole "magic" spin a=0.983 belongs. However, the version demonstrating the best agreement with the mass restrictions predicts spin a=0.980.

Multi-resonance orbital model of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations: possible high-precision determination of black hole and neutron star spin

Using known frequencies of the twin-peak high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs) and known mass of the central black hole, the black-hole dimensionless spin can be determined by assuming a concrete version of the resonance model. However, a wide range of observationally limited values of the black hole mass implies low precision of the spin estimates. We discuss the possibility of higher precision of the black hole spin measurements in the framework of a multi-resonance model inspired by observations of more than two HF QPOs in the black hole systems, which are expected to occur at two (or more) different radii of the accretion disc. For the black hole systems we focus on the special case of duplex frequencies, when the top, bottom, or mixed frequency is common at two different radii where the resonances occur giving triple frequency sets. The sets of triple frequency ratios and the related spin are given. The strong resonance model for "magic" values of the black hole spin means that two (or more) versions of resonance could occur at the same radius, allowing cooperative effects between the resonances. For neutron star systems we introduce a resonant switch model that assumes switching of oscillatory modes at resonant points. In the case of doubled twin-peak HF QPOs excited at two different radii with common top, bottom, or mixed frequency, the black hole spin is given by the triple frequency ratio set. The spin is determined precisely, but not uniquely, because the same frequency set could correspond to more than one concrete spin. The black hole mass is given by the magnitude of the observed frequencies. The resonant switch model puts relevant limits on the mass and spin of neutron stars, and we expect a strong increase in the fitting procedure precision when different twin oscillatory modes are applied to data in the vicinity of different resonant points.

Quadrupole moments of rotating neutron stars and strange stars

We present results for models of neutron stars and strange stars constructed using the Hartle-Thorne slow-rotation method with a wide range of equations of state, focusing on the values obtained for the angular momentum $J$ and the quadrupole moment $Q$, when the gravitational mass $M$ and the rotational frequency $Ω$ are specified. Building on previous work, which showed surprising uniformity in the behaviour of the moment of inertia for neutron-star models constructed with widely-different equations of state, we find similar uniformity for the quadrupole moment. These two quantities, together with the mass, are fundamental for determining the vacuum space-time outside neutron stars. We study particularly the dimensionless combination of parameters $QM/J^2$ (using units for which $c=G=1$). This quantity goes to 1 in the case of a Kerr-metric black hole and deviations away from 1 then characterize the difference between neutron-star and black-hole space-times. It is found that $QM/J^2$ for both neutron stars and strange stars decreases with increasing mass, for a given equation of state, reaching a value of around 2 (or even less) for maximum-mass models, meaning that their external space-time is then rather well approximated by the Kerr metric. If $QM/J^2$ is plotter against compactness $R/2M$ (where $R$ is the radius), it is found that the relationship is nearly unique for neutron-star models, independent of the equation of state, while it is significantly different for strange stars. This gives a new way of possibly distinguishing between them.

Resonant switch model of twin peak HF QPOs applied to the source 4U 1636-53

Resonant Switch (RS) model of twin peak high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) assumes switch of twin oscillations at a resonant point where frequencies of the upper and lower oscillations become commensurable and the twin oscillations change from one pair of the oscillating modes (corresponding to a specific model of HF QPOs) to some other pair due to non-linear resonant phenomena. The RS model is used to determine range of allowed values of spin and mass of the neutron star located at the atoll source 4U 1636-53 where two resonant points are observed at frequency ratios $nu_{U}$ : $nu_{L}$ = 3:2, 5:4. We consider the standard specific models of the twin oscillations based on the orbital and epicyclic geodetical frequencies. The resonant points are determined by the energy switch effect exhibited by the vanishing of the amplitude difference of the upper and lower oscillations. The predicted ranges of the neutron star parameters are strongly dependent on the twin modes applied in the RS model. We demonstrate that for some of the oscillatory modes used in the RS model the predicted parameters of the neutron star are unacceptable. Among acceptable RS models the most promising are those combining the Relativistic Precession and the Total Precession frequency relations or their modifications.

Non-geodesic orbital and epicyclic frequencies in vicinity of slowly rotating magnetized neutron stars

We study non-geodesic corrections to the quasicircular motion of charged test particles in the field of magnetized slowly rotating neutron stars. The gravitational field is approximated by the Lense-Thirring geometry, the magnetic field is of the standard dipole character. Using a fully-relativistic approach we determine influence of the electromagnetic interaction (both attractive and repulsive) on the quasicircular motion. We focus on the behaviour of the orbital and epicyclic frequencies of the motion. Components of the four-velocity of the orbiting charged test particles are obtained by numerical solution of equations of motion, the epicyclic frequencies are obtained by using the standard perturbative method. The role of the combined effect of the neutron star magnetic field and its rotation in the character of the orbital and epicyclic frequencies is discussed.

Confronting the models of 3:2 QPOs with the evidence of near extreme Kerr black hole

The black hole mass and spin estimates assuming various specific models of the 3:2 high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) have been carried out in Torok et al. (2005, 2011). Here we briefly summarize some current points. Spectral fitting of the spin a=cJ/GM^2 in the microquasar GRS 1915+105 reveals that this system can contain a near extreme rotating black hole (e.g., McClintock et al. 2011). Confirming the high value of the spin would have significant consequences for the theory of the HF QPOs. The estimate of a>0.9 is almost inconsistent with the relativistic precession (RP), tidal disruption (TD), and the warped disc (WD) model. The epicyclic resonance (Ep) and discoseismic models assuming the c- and g- modes are instead favoured. However, consideration of all three microquasars that display the 3:2 HF QPOs leads to a serious puzzle because the differences in the individual spins, such as a=0.9 compared to a=0.7, represent a generic problem almost for any unified orbital 3:2 QPO model.

Multi-resonance orbital model of HF QPOs

Using known frequencies of the twin peak high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs) and known mass M of the central black hole, the black-hole dimensionless spin a can be determined assuming a concrete version of the resonance model. However, large range of observationally limited values of the black hole mass implies a low precision of the spin estimates. We discuss the possibility of higher precision of the black hole spin measurements in the framework of multi-resonance model inspired by observations of more than two HF QPOs in some black hole sources. We determine the spin and mass dependence of the twin peak frequencies with a general rational ratio n:m assuming a non-linear resonance of oscillations with the epicyclic and Keplerian frequencies or their combinations. In the multi-resonant model, the twin peak resonances are combined properly to give the observed frequency set. We focus on the special case of duplex frequencies, when the top, bottom, or mixed frequency is common at two different radii where the resonances occur giving triple frequency sets.

Resonant switch model of twin peak HF QPOs applied to the atoll source 4U 1636-53

We present a Resonant Switch (RS) model of twin peak high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs), assuming switch of twin oscillations at a resonant point, where frequencies of the upper and lower oscillations $ν_U$ and $ν_L$ become to be commensurable and the twin oscillations change from one pair of the oscillating modes (corresponding to a specific model of HF QPOs) to some other pair due to non-linear resonant phenomena. The RS model enables to determine range of allowed values of spin $a$ and mass $M$ of the neutron star located at the atoll source 4U 1636-53 where two resonant points are observed at frequency ratios $ν_U:ν_L$ = 3:2, 5:4.

Restrictions to neutron star properties based on twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations

We consider twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations observed in the accreting low-mass neutron star binaries and explore restrictions to central compact object properties that are implied by various QPO models. For each model and each source, the consideration results in a specific relation between the compact object mass $M$ and the angular-momentum $j$ rather than in their single preferred combination. Moreover, restrictions on the models resulting from observations of the low-frequency sources are weaker than those in the case of the high-frequency sources.

Neutrino trapping in braneworld extremely compact stars

Extremely Compact Stars (ECS) contain trapped null geodesics. When such objects enter the evolution period admitting geodetical motion of neutrinos, certain part of neutrinos produced in their interior will be trapped influencing their neutrino luminosity and thermal evolution. We study neutrino trapping in the braneworld ECS, assuming uniform distribution of neutrino emissivity and massless neutrinos. We give the efficiency of the neutrino trapping effects in the framework of the simple model of the internal spacetime with uniform distribution of energy density, and external spacetime described by the Reissner-Nordström geometry characterized by the braneworld "tidal" parameter $b$. For $b < 0$ the external spacetime is of the black-hole type, while for $b > 0$ the external spacetime can be of both black-hole and naked-singularity type. Then the ECS surface radius $R$ can be located also above the unstable (outer) photon circular orbit. Such basically new types of the spacetimes strongly alter the trapping phenomena as compared to the standard case of $b = 0$. It is shown that the neutrino trapping effects are slightly lowered by the presence of physically more plausible case of $b < 0$, as compared to the standard internal Schwarzschild spacetime, while they can be magnified by positive tidal charges if $b < 1$ and lowered for $b > 1$. However, potential astrophysical relevance of the trapping phenomena is strongly enhanced for negative tidal charges enabling a significant enlargement of the ECS surface radius to values coherent with recent observations.

Photon and neutrino redshift in the field of braneworld compact stars

We study gravitational redshift of photons and neutrinos radiated by the braneworld neutron or quark stars that are considered in the framework of the simple model of the internal spacetime with uniform distribution of energy density, and the external spacetime described by the Reissner-Nordström geometry characterized by the braneworld "tidal" charge $b$. For negative tidal charges, the external spacetime is of the black-hole type, while for positive tidal charges, the external spacetime can be of both black-hole and naked-singularity type. We consider also extremely compact stars allowing existence of trapped null geodesics in their interior. We assume radiation of photons from the surface at radius $R$, neutrinos from the whole compact star interior, and their motion along radial null geodesics of the spacetime. In dependency on the compact stars parameters $b$ and $R$, the photon surface redshift is related to the range of the neutrino internal redshift and the signatures of the tidal charge and possible existence of extremely compact stars are discussed. When both surface (photon) and internal (neutrino) redshift are given by observations, both compact star parameters $R$ and $b$ can be determined in the framework of our simple model.

Non-monotonic Keplerian velocity profiles around near-extreme braneworld Kerr black holes

We study the non-monotonic Keplerian velocity profiles related to locally non-rotating frames (LNRF) in the field of near-extreme braneworld Kerr black holes and naked singularities in which the non-local gravitational effects of the bulk are represented by a braneworld tidal charge $b$ and the 4D geometry of the spacetime structure is governed by the Kerr-Newman geometry. We show that positive tidal charge has a tendency to restrict the values of the black hole dimensionless spin $a$ admitting existence of the non-monotonic Keplerian LNRF-velocity profiles; the non-monotonic profiles exist in the black hole spacetimes with tidal charge smaller than $b=0.41005$ (and spin larger than $a=0.76808$). With decreasing value of the tidal charge (which need not be only positive), both the region of spin allowing the non-monotonicity in the LNRF-velocity profile around braneworld Kerr black hole and the velocity difference in the minimum-maximum parts of the velocity profile increase implying growing astrophysical relevance of this phenomenon.

Confronting the models of 3:2 quasiperiodic oscillations with the rapid spin of the microquasar GRS 1915+105

Spectral fitting of the spin a in the microquasar GRS 1915+105 estimate values higher than a=0.98. However, there are certain doubts about this (nearly) extremal number. Confirming a high value of a>0.9 would have significant concequences for the theory of high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs). Here we discuss its possible implications assuming several commonly used orbital models of 3:2 HF QPOs. We show that the estimate of a>0.9 is almost inconsistent with two hot-spot (relativistic precession and tidal disruption) models and the warped disc resonance model. In contrast, we demonstrate that the epicyclic resonance and discoseismic models assuming the c- and g- modes are favoured. We extend our discussion to another two microquasars that display the 3:2 HF QPOs. The frequencies of these QPOs scale roughly inversely to the microquasar masses, and the differences in the individual spins, such as a=0.9 compared to a=0.7, represent a generic problem for most of the discussed geodesic 3:2 QPO models. To explain the observations of all the three microquasars by one unique mechanism, the models would have to accommodate very large non-geodesic corrections.

Appearance of Keplerian discs orbiting Kerr superspinars

We study optical phenomena related to appearance of Keplerian accretion discs orbiting Kerr superspinars predicted by the string theory. The superspinar exterior is described by the standard Kerr naked singularity geometry breaking the black hole limit on the internal angular momentum (spin). We construct local photon escape cones for a variety of orbiting sources that enable to determine the superspinars silhouette in the case of distant observers. We show that the superspinar silhouette depends strongly on the assumed edge where the external Kerr spacetime is joined to the internal spacetime governed by the string theory and significantly differs from the black hole silhouette. The appearance of the accretion disc is strongly dependent on the value of the superspinar spin in both their shape and frequency shift profile. Apparent extension of the disc grows significantly with growing spin, while the frequency shift grows with descending spin. This behavior differs substantially from appearance of discs orbiting black holes enabling thus, at least in principle, to distinguish clearly the Kerr superspinars and black holes. In vicinity of a Kerr superspinar the non-escaped photons have to be separated to those captured by the superspinar and those being trapped in its strong gravitational field leading to self-illumination of the disc that could even influence its structure and causes self-reflection effect of radiation of the disc. The amount of trapped photons grows with descending of the superspinar spin. We thus can expect significant self-illumination effects in the field of Kerr superspinars with near-extreme spin $a \sim 1$.

Resonant radii of kHz quasi-periodic oscillations in Keplerian discs orbiting neutron stars

Exchange of dominance between twin kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in some low-mass-X-ray-binaries (LMXB) suggests the possibility of a resonance between two oscillatory modes. We study the behaviour of the effective gravitational potential around specific resonant radii, and estimate the role of the higher-order terms governing the non-linear, anharmonic forcing. We discuss the impact it has on the mode amplitude in the linear and non--linear regimes. We also discuss a related possibility of lowering of the neutron star mass estimates from the highest observed QPO frequencies.

On mass-constraints implied by the relativistic precession model of twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations in Circinus X-1

Boutloukos et al. (2006) discovered twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 11 observations of the peculiar Z-source Circinus X-1. Among several other conjunctions the authors briefly discussed the related estimate of the compact object mass following from the geodesic relativistic precession model for kHz QPOs. Neglecting the neutron star rotation they reported the inferred mass M_0 = 2.2 +/- 0.3 M_\sun. We present a more detailed analysis of the estimate which involves the frame-dragging effects associated with rotating spacetimes. For a free mass we find acceptable fits of the model to data for (any) small dimensionless compact object angular momentum j=cJ/GM^2. Moreover, quality of the fit tends to increase very gently with rising j. Good fits are reached when M ~ M_0[1+0.55(j+j^2)]. It is therefore impossible to estimate the mass without the independent knowledge of the angular momentum and vice versa. Considering j up to 0.3 the range of the feasible values of mass extends up to 3M_\sun. We suggest that similar increase of estimated mass due to rotational effects can be relevant for several other sources.
