Contribution of coherent electron production to measurements of heavy-flavor decayed electrons in heavy-ion collisions

Heavy quarks, produced at early stages of heavy-ion collisions, are an excellent probe of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) also created in these collisions. Electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays (HFE) are good proxies for heavy quarks, and have been measured extensively in the last two decades to study QGP properties. These measurements are traditionally carried out by subtracting all known background sources from the inclusive electron sample. More recently, a significant enhancement of $e^+e^-$ pair production at very low transverse momenta was observed in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. The production characteristics is consistent with coherent photon-photon interactions, which should also constitute a background source to the HFE measurements. In this article, we provide theoretical predictions for the contribution of coherent electron production to HFE as a function of transverse momentum, centrality and collision energy in Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions.

Exploring the photoproduction of $ρ$ and $ϕ$ in hadronic heavy-ion collisions

Significant enhancements of J/$ψ$ production have been observed by various experiments at RHIC and LHC for very low transverse momenta in peripheral heavy-ion collisions, which has ignited a surge of investigations into photon-induced processes in hadronic heavy-ion collisions (HHICs). Within this wave of research enthusiasm, the search for more photon induced products in HHICs becomes paramount. In this paper, we perform the calculation of the $ρ$ and $ϕ$ production resulting from photon-nucleus interactions in HHICs, which are crucial probes for studying the properties of Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in HHICs. Our study reveals that, in comparison to hadronic production, the photon-induced production of $ρ$ and $ϕ$ does not reach the same level of significance as that observed in J/$ψ$ production. Nevertheless, it remains substantial, especially in peripheral collisions, holding great promise for experimental verification in the imminent future.

The PMT System of the TRIDENT Pathfinder Experiment

Next generation neutrino telescopes are highly anticipated to boost the development of neutrino astronomy. A multi-cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope, TRopIcal DEep-sea Neutrino Telescope (TRIDENT), was proposed to be built in the South China Sea. The detector aims to achieve ~ 0.1 degree angular resolution for track-like events at energy above 100 TeV by using hybrid digital optical modules, opening new opportunities for neutrino astronomy. In order to measure the water optical properties and marine environment of the proposed TRIDENT site, a pathfinder experiment was conducted, in which a 100-meter-long string consisting of three optical modules was deployed at a depth of 3420 m to perform in-situ measurements. The central module emits light by housing LEDs, whereas the other two modules detect light with two independent and complementary systems: the PMT and the camera systems. By counting the number of detected photons and analyzing the photon arrival time distribution, the PMT system can measure the absorption and scattering lengths of sea water, which serve as the basic inputs for designing the neutrino telescope. In this paper, we present the design concept, calibration and performance of the PMT system in the pathfinder experiment.

Correlations of Baryon and Charge Stopping in Heavy Ion Collisions

Baryon numbers are carried by valence quarks in the standard QCD picture of the baryon structure, while some theory proposed an alternative baryon number carrier, a non-perturbative Y-shaped configuration of the gluon field, called the baryon junction in the 1970s. However, neither of the theories has been verified experimentally. It was recently suggested to search for the baryon junction by investigating the correlation of net-charge and net-baryon yields at midrapidity in heavy-ion collisions. This paper presents studies of such correlations in collisions of various heavy ions from Oxygen to Uranium with the UrQMD Monte Carlo model. The UrQMD model implements valence quark transport as the primary means of charge and baryon stopping at midrapidity. Detailed study are also carried out for isobaric $_{40}^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ + $_{40}^{96}\mathrm{Zr}$ and $_{44}^{96}\mathrm{Ru}$ + $_{44}^{96}\mathrm{Ru}$ collisions. We found a universal trend of the charge stopping with respect to the baryon stopping, and that the charge stopping is always more than the baryon stopping. This study provides a model baseline in valence quark transport for what is expected in net-charge and net-baryon yields at midrapidity of relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Quantifying Photoproduction Corrections to J/ψMeasurements in Au+Au and Cu+Cu Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV

The contribution of J/ψproduction from coherent and incoherent photon-induced production is calculated in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. The yield and nuclear modification factors ($R_{AA}$) contributed by photoproduction are presented as functions of transverse momentum ($p_T$) and centrality at both mid- and forward rapidity. The $R_{AA}$ of J/ψfrom photoproduction is found to be as high as 0.6 in the lowest $p_{T}$ bin ($0 < p_{T} < 1$ GeV/$c$) at mid-rapidity in 60-92\% Au+Au collisions. The $R_{AA}$ measured in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV are corrected by subtracting the calculated photoproduction contribution.

A novel fast response and radiation-resistant scintillator detector for beam loss monitor

At high luminosity areas, beam loss monitor with fast response and high radiation resistance is crucial for accelerator operation. In this article, we report the design and test results of a fast response and radiation-resistant scintillator detector as the beam loss monitor for high luminosity colliders, especially at low energy regions such as RFQ. The detector consists of a 2 cm*2 cm 0.5 cm LYSO crystal readout by a 6 mm*6 mm Silicon photomultiplier. Test results from various radioactive sources show that the detector has good sensitivity to photons from tens of keV to several MeV with good linearity and energy resolution (23% for 60 keV γ-ray). For the field test, two such detectors are installed outside of the vacuum chamber shell of an 800 MeV electron storage ring. The details of the test and results are introduced.

Reaction plane alignment with linearly polarized photon in heavy-ion collisions

The collective observables play critical roles in probing the properties of quark-gluon-plasma created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in which the information on initial collision geometry is crucial. However, the initial collision geometry, e.g., the reaction plane, cannot be directly extracted in the experiment. In this paper, we demonstrate the idea of determining the reaction plane via the feature of linear polarization of the coherent photoproduction process and discuss the advantages of the proposed approach in comparison with traditional methods.

Rescattering effect on the measurement of K* spin alignment in heavy-ion collisions

Spin alignment of vector mesons in noncentral relativistic heavy ion collisions provides a novel probe of the global quark polarization and hadronization mechanism. In this paper, we discuss the spin alignment of a short-lived vector meson, namely K*, arising from the hadronic rescattering process using the UrQMD model. This spin alignment is not related to global quark polarization but cannot be distinguished from those arising from global quark polarization in experiments. The spin alignment parameter $ρ_{00}$ is found to deviate from 1/3 by up to -0.008 (0.03) with respect to the reaction (production) plane. These deviations are much larger than the expected signal from all the theoretical models implementing the conventional global quark polarization mechanism as well as the current experimental precision, and should be considered seriously when comparing measurements with theoretical calculations.

High dynamic range base design and characterization of an 8-inch photomultiplier tube CR365-02-2 for the LHAASO-MD experiment

Ultra-high-energy ($>$ 100 TeV) gamma-ray detection benefits from the use of muon detectors (MDs) thanks to their capability of suppressing the cosmic-ray background. More than 1100 8-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), CR365-02-2 from Beijing Hamamatsu Photon Techniques INC. (BHP), will be deployed for the LHAASO-MD experiment. In this paper, the design of the photomultiplier base for CR365-02-2 is presented. Signals are extracted from two outputs: the anode and the 7th dynode. This design ensures a high dynamic range, from single photoelectron (SPE, peak-to-valley ratio $>$ 2), up to bunches of $7\times10^5$ photoelectrons, with an equivalent anode peak current of up to 1600 mA. The anode-to-dynode amplitude ratio (A/D) is below 160 in order to ensure enough overlap between the two outputs. Test results of 4 PMTs, including the SPE response, A/D, linearity, dark count rate, and afterpulse rate, are reported.

Nonequilibrium kinetic freeze-out properties in relativistic heavy ion collisions from energies employed at the RHIC beam energy scan to those available at the LHC

In this paper, we investigate the kinetic freeze-out properties in relativistic heavy ion collisions at different collision energies. We present a study of standard Boltzmann-Gibbs Blast-Wave (BGBW) fits and Tsallis Blast-Wave (TBW) fits performed on the transverse momentum spectra of identified hadrons produced in Au + Au collisions at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=$ 7.7 - 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), and in Pb + Pb collisions at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=$ 2.76 and 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The behavior of strange and multi-strange particles is also investigated. We found that the TBW model describes data better than the BGBW one overall, and the contrast is more prominent as the collision energy increases as the degree of non-equilibrium of the produced system is found to increase. From TBW fits, the kinetic freeze-out temperature at the same centrality shows a weak dependence of collision energy between 7.7 and 39 GeV, while it decreases as collision energy continues to increase up to 5.02 TeV. The radial flow is found to be consistent with zero in peripheral collisions at RHIC energies but sizable at LHC energies and central collisions at all RHIC energies. We also observed that the strange hadrons, with higher temperature and similar radial flow, approach equilibrium more quickly from peripheral to central collisions than light hadrons. The dependence of temperature and flow velocity on non-equilibrium parameter ($q-1$) is characterized by two second-order polynomials. Both $a$ and $dξ$ from the polynomials fit, related to the influence of the system bulk viscosity, increase toward lower RHIC energies.

Open heavy flavor and quarkonium are unique probes of the hot-dense medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. Their production in p+p collisions also provide important test of QCD. In this paper, we review the selected results on open heavy flavor and quarkonium in p+p and heavy-ion collisions achieved at RHIC. Physics implications are also discussed.

Discovery of higher order QED effect for the vacuum pair production

The higher order quantum electrodynamics (QED) effect for vacuum pair production has been searched without success since 1954. In this paper, we show that the lowest order QED calculations for lepton pair vacuum production in heavy-ion collisions are about 20$\%$ higher than the combined world-wide data with a seven sigma-level of significance and the corresponding higher order QED results are consistent with data. We claim the discovery of higher order effect for the QED pair production, which settles the dust of previous debates for several decades. The verification of higher order QED effect is a fundamental scientific problem, which is an important milestone towards the nonperturbative and nonlinear regime of QED vacuum.

Quality Assurance Test of Silicon Photomultipliers and Electronic Boards for STAR Event Plane Detector

The event plane detector (EPD), installed in the Solenoid Tracker at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider located at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is a plastic scintillator-based device that measures the reaction centrality and event plane in the forward region of the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We used silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays to detect the photons produced in the scintillator via the fiber connection. Signals from the SiPM arrays were amplified by the front-end electronic (FEE) board, and sent to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) boards for further processing via the receiver(RX) board. The full EPD system consisted of 24 super-sectors (SSs); each SS was equipped with two SiPM boards, two FEE boards and two RX boards, and they corresponded to 744 readout channels. All these boards were mass produced at the University of Science and Technology of China, with a dedicated quality assurance (QA) procedures applied to identify any problems before deployment. This article describes the details of the QA method and the related test system. The QA test results are presented along with the discussions.

Exploring the double-slit interference with linearly polarized photons

The linearly polarized quasi-real photons from the highly Lorentz-contracted Coulomb fields of relativistic heavy ions can fluctuate to quark-antiquark pairs, scatter off a target nucleus and emerge as vector mesons. In the process, the two colliding nuclei can switch roles to act as photon emitter or target, forming a double-slit interference pattern. The product from photoproduction inherits the photon polarization states, leading to the asymmetries of the decay angular distributions. In this letter, we study the interference effect in polarization dimension from the asymmetries of the decay angular distributions for photoprodution in heavy-ion collisions and find a periodic oscillation with the transverse momentum of vector meson, which could reasonably explain the transverse momentum dependence of the 2nd-order modulation in azimuth for the $ρ^{0}$ decay observed by the STAR collaboration.

Acoplanarity of QED pairs accompanied by nuclear dissociation in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions

This paper investigates the transverse momentum broadening effect for electromagnetic production of dileptons in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions accompanied by nuclear dissociation. The electromagnetic dissociation probability of nuclei for different neutron multiplicities is estimated, which could serve as a centrality definition (i.e. impact parameter estimate) in ultra-peripheral collisions. In the framework of lowest-order QED, the acoplanarity of dilepton pairs is calculated for different neutron emission scenarios in ultra-peripheral collisions, indicating significant impact-parameter dependence. The verification of impact-parameter dependence is crucially important to understand the broadening effect observed in hadronic heavy-ion collisions.

Quarkonium production: An experimental overview

Quarkonium has been proposed as a sensitive probe of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) more than thirty years ago. Since then, lots of experimental efforts have been devoted to study its production in heavy-ion collisions to search for QGP and study its properties and significant progresses have been made. In this paper, an overview of recent experimental results on charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions as well as in small systems are presented. Furthermore, the results on exotic particle X(3872) production in Pb+Pb and p+p collisions are also discussed.
