Removing Stripes, Scratches, and Curtaining with Non-Recoverable Compressed Sensing

Highly-directional image artifacts such as ion mill curtaining, mechanical scratches, or image striping from beam instability degrade the interpretability of micrographs. These unwanted, aperiodic features extend the image along a primary direction and occupy a small wedge of information in Fourier space. Deleting this wedge of data replaces stripes, scratches, or curtaining, with more complex streaking and blurring artifacts-known within the tomography community as missing wedge artifacts. Here, we overcome this problem by recovering the missing region using total variation minimization, which leverages image sparsity based reconstruction techniques-colloquially referred to as compressed sensing-to reliably restore images corrupted by stripe like features. Our approach removes beam instability, ion mill curtaining, mechanical scratches, or any stripe features and remains robust at low signal-to-noise. The success of this approach is achieved by exploiting compressed sensings inability to recover directional structures that are highly localized and missing in Fourier Space.

Guiding Intelligent Surveillance System by learning-by-synthesis gaze estimation

We describe a novel learning-by-synthesis method for estimating gaze direction of an automated intelligent surveillance system. Recently, progress in learning-by-synthesis has proposed training models on synthetic images, which can effectively reduce the cost of manpower and material resources. However, learning from synthetic images still fails to achieve the desired performance compared to naturalistic images due to the different distribution of synthetic images. In an attempt to address this issue, previous method is to improve the realism of synthetic images by learning a model. However, the disadvantage of the method is that the distortion has not been improved and the authenticity level is unstable. To solve this problem, we put forward a new structure to improve synthetic images, via the reference to the idea of style transformation, through which we can efficiently reduce the distortion of pictures and minimize the need of real data annotation. We estimate that this enables generation of highly realistic images, which we demonstrate both qualitatively and with a user study. We quantitatively evaluate the generated images by training models for gaze estimation. We show a significant improvement over using synthetic images, and achieve state-of-the-art results on various datasets including MPIIGaze dataset.

Observation of Disorder State Coupling to Excitons in InGaN Disks in GaN Nanowires

InxGa1-xN disks in GaN nanowires (DINWs) have emerged as a viable technology for on-chip tunable visible spectrum emission without the use of a phosphor. Here we present a study of the optical emission and absorption dynamics in DINWs that incorporates the important role of background disorder states. We show that the optical emission in the system is dominated by quantum-confined excitons, however the exci-tons are coupled to a large density of background disorder states. Rapid non-radiative decay (compared to other decay rates such as spontaneous emission) from disorder states into excitons is observed after optical excitation of our sample, which can be advantageous for increasing the brightness of the system in future design efforts.

Sub-$μ$eV Decoherence-Induced Population Pulsation Resonances in an InGaN system

We report on high frequency resolution coherent nonlinear optical spectroscopy on an ensemble of InGaN disks in GaN nanowires at 300 K. Sub-$μ$eV resonances in the inhomogeneously broadened third order ($χ^{(3)}$) absorption spectrum show asymmetric line shapes, where the degree of asymmetry depends on the wavelength of the excitation beams. Theory based on the Optical Bloch Equations (OBE) indicates that the lineshape asymmetry is a result of fast decoherence in the system and the narrow resonances originate from coherent population pulsations that are induced by decoherence in the system. Using the OBE, we estimate that the decoherence time of the optically induced dipole (formed between the unexcited ground state the excited electron-hole pair) at room temperature is 125 fs, corresponding to a linewidth of ~10 meV. The decay time of the excitation is ~5-10 ns, depending on the excitation energy. The lineshapes are well fit with the OBE indicating that the resonances are characterized by discrete levels with no evidence of many body physics.

McMillan-Rowell Oscillations in a Low Spin-Orbit SNS Semiconducting Junction

The electronic transport properties of an SNS junction formed by an InN nanowire (N) and Al contacts (S) with a superconducting transition temperature T_c ~ 0.92 K were investigated. As a function of dc bias, superconducting quasiparticle transport resonance peaks at E=2Δwere observed, in agreement with BCS theory with 2Δ(T=0) \equiv Δ_0=275\mueV. Several additional transport resonances scaling linearly in energy were observed at high-bias above 2Δ, up to E\simeq 15Δ_0, consistent with McMillan-Rowell oscillations. The persistence of McMillan-Rowell oscillations at high-bias and under applied magnetic field were investigated.
