Owl Eyes: Spotting UI Display Issues via Visual Understanding

Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides a visual bridge between a software application and end users, through which they can interact with each other. With the development of technology and aesthetics, the visual effects of the GUI are more and more attracting. However, such GUI complexity posts a great challenge to the GUI implementation. According to our pilot study of crowdtesting bug reports, display issues such as text overlap, blurred screen, missing image always occur during GUI rendering on different devices due to the software or hardware compatibility. They negatively influence the app usability, resulting in poor user experience. To detect these issues, we propose a novel approach, OwlEye, based on deep learning for modelling visual information of the GUI screenshot. Therefore, OwlEye can detect GUIs with display issues and also locate the detailed region of the issue in the given GUI for guiding developers to fix the bug. We manually construct a large-scale labelled dataset with 4,470 GUI screenshots with UI display issues and develop a heuristics-based data augmentation method for boosting the performance of our OwlEye. The evaluation demonstrates that our OwlEye can achieve 85% precision and 84% recall in detecting UI display issues, and 90% accuracy in localizing these issues. We also evaluate OwlEye with popular Android apps on Google Play and F-droid, and successfully uncover 57 previously-undetected UI display issues with 26 of them being confirmed or fixed so far.

EPNet: Enhancing Point Features with Image Semantics for 3D Object Detection

In this paper, we aim at addressing two critical issues in the 3D detection task, including the exploitation of multiple sensors~(namely LiDAR point cloud and camera image), as well as the inconsistency between the localization and classification confidence. To this end, we propose a novel fusion module to enhance the point features with semantic image features in a point-wise manner without any image annotations. Besides, a consistency enforcing loss is employed to explicitly encourage the consistency of both the localization and classification confidence. We design an end-to-end learnable framework named EPNet to integrate these two components. Extensive experiments on the KITTI and SUN-RGBD datasets demonstrate the superiority of EPNet over the state-of-the-art methods. Codes and models are available at: \url{https://github.com/happinesslz/EPNet}.

Face to Purchase: Predicting Consumer Choices with Structured Facial and Behavioral Traits Embedding

Predicting consumers' purchasing behaviors is critical for targeted advertisement and sales promotion in e-commerce. Human faces are an invaluable source of information for gaining insights into consumer personality and behavioral traits. However, consumer's faces are largely unexplored in previous research, and the existing face-related studies focus on high-level features such as personality traits while neglecting the business significance of learning from facial data. We propose to predict consumers' purchases based on their facial features and purchasing histories. We design a semi-supervised model based on a hierarchical embedding network to extract high-level features of consumers and to predict the top-$N$ purchase destinations of a consumer. Our experimental results on a real-world dataset demonstrate the positive effect of incorporating facial information in predicting consumers' purchasing behaviors.

Spectrum-Guided Adversarial Disparity Learning

It has been a significant challenge to portray intraclass disparity precisely in the area of activity recognition, as it requires a robust representation of the correlation between subject-specific variation for each activity class. In this work, we propose a novel end-to-end knowledge directed adversarial learning framework, which portrays the class-conditioned intraclass disparity using two competitive encoding distributions and learns the purified latent codes by denoising learned disparity. Furthermore, the domain knowledge is incorporated in an unsupervised manner to guide the optimization and further boosts the performance. The experiments on four HAR benchmark datasets demonstrate the robustness and generalization of our proposed methods over a set of state-of-the-art. We further prove the effectiveness of automatic domain knowledge incorporation in performance enhancement.

Statistical Testing on ASR Performance via Blockwise Bootstrap

A common question being raised in automatic speech recognition (ASR) evaluations is how reliable is an observed word error rate (WER) improvement comparing two ASR systems, where statistical hypothesis testing and confidence interval (CI) can be utilized to tell whether this improvement is real or only due to random chance. The bootstrap resampling method has been popular for such significance analysis which is intuitive and easy to use. However, this method fails in dealing with dependent data, which is prevalent in speech world - for example, ASR performance on utterances from the same speaker could be correlated. In this paper we present blockwise bootstrap approach - by dividing evaluation utterances into nonoverlapping blocks, this method resamples these blocks instead of original data. We show that the resulting variance estimator of absolute WER difference between two ASR systems is consistent under mild conditions. We also demonstrate the validity of blockwise bootstrap method on both synthetic and real-world speech data.

Agglomerative Neural Networks for Multi-view Clustering

Conventional multi-view clustering methods seek for a view consensus through minimizing the pairwise discrepancy between the consensus and subviews. However, the pairwise comparison cannot portray the inter-view relationship precisely if some of the subviews can be further agglomerated. To address the above challenge, we propose the agglomerative analysis to approximate the optimal consensus view, thereby describing the subview relationship within a view structure. We present Agglomerative Neural Network (ANN) based on Constrained Laplacian Rank to cluster multi-view data directly while avoiding a dedicated postprocessing step (e.g., using K-means). We further extend ANN with learnable data space to handle data of complex scenarios. Our evaluations against several state-of-the-art multi-view clustering approaches on four popular datasets show the promising view-consensus analysis ability of ANN. We further demonstrate ANN's capability in analyzing complex view structures and extensibility in our case study and explain its robustness and effectiveness of data-driven modifications.

Are You A Risk Taker? Adversarial Learning of Asymmetric Cross-Domain Alignment for Risk Tolerance Prediction

Most current studies on survey analysis and risk tolerance modelling lack professional knowledge and domain-specific models. Given the effectiveness of generative adversarial learning in cross-domain information, we design an Asymmetric cross-Domain Generative Adversarial Network (ADGAN) for domain scale inequality. ADGAN utilizes the information-sufficient domain to provide extra information to improve the representation learning on the information-insufficient domain via domain alignment. We provide data analysis and user model on two data sources: Consumer Consumption Information and Survey Information. We further test ADGAN on a real-world dataset with view embedding structures and show ADGAN can better deal with the class imbalance and unqualified data space than state-of-the-art, demonstrating the effectiveness of leveraging asymmetrical domain information.

Adversarial Representation Learning for Robust Patient-Independent Epileptic Seizure Detection

Objective: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by the occurrence of spontaneous seizures, which affects about one percent of the world's population. Most of the current seizure detection approaches strongly rely on patient history records and thus fail in the patient-independent situation of detecting the new patients. To overcome such limitation, we propose a robust and explainable epileptic seizure detection model that effectively learns from seizure states while eliminates the inter-patient noises. Methods: A complex deep neural network model is proposed to learn the pure seizure-specific representation from the raw non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) signals through adversarial training. Furthermore, to enhance the explainability, we develop an attention mechanism to automatically learn the importance of each EEG channels in the seizure diagnosis procedure. Results: The proposed approach is evaluated over the Temple University Hospital EEG (TUH EEG) database. The experimental results illustrate that our model outperforms the competitive state-of-the-art baselines with low latency. Moreover, the designed attention mechanism is demonstrated ables to provide fine-grained information for pathological analysis. Conclusion and significance: We propose an effective and efficient patient-independent diagnosis approach of epileptic seizure based on raw EEG signals without manually feature engineering, which is a step toward the development of large-scale deployment for real-life use.

TANet: Robust 3D Object Detection from Point Clouds with Triple Attention

In this paper, we focus on exploring the robustness of the 3D object detection in point clouds, which has been rarely discussed in existing approaches. We observe two crucial phenomena: 1) the detection accuracy of the hard objects, e.g., Pedestrians, is unsatisfactory, 2) when adding additional noise points, the performance of existing approaches decreases rapidly. To alleviate these problems, a novel TANet is introduced in this paper, which mainly contains a Triple Attention (TA) module, and a Coarse-to-Fine Regression (CFR) module. By considering the channel-wise, point-wise and voxel-wise attention jointly, the TA module enhances the crucial information of the target while suppresses the unstable cloud points. Besides, the novel stacked TA further exploits the multi-level feature attention. In addition, the CFR module boosts the accuracy of localization without excessive computation cost. Experimental results on the validation set of KITTI dataset demonstrate that, in the challenging noisy cases, i.e., adding additional random noisy points around each object, the presented approach goes far beyond state-of-the-art approaches. Furthermore, for the 3D object detection task of the KITTI benchmark, our approach ranks the first place on Pedestrian class, by using the point clouds as the only input. The running speed is around 29 frames per second.

Nanoconfined, dynamic electrolyte gating and memory effects in multilayered graphene-based membranes

Multilayered graphene-based nanoporous membranes with electrolyte incorporated between individual sheets is a unique nano-heterostructure system in which nanoconfined electrons in graphene and ions confined in between sheets are intimately coupled throughout the entire membrane. In contrast to the general notion that the electrolyte gating is unlikely to appear in multilayered graphene stacks, it is demonstrated in this work that the electrolyte gating effect in monolayer graphene can be transferred to its corresponding multilayered porous membranes. This gating effect presented on each individual graphene sheets through electrolyte confined in nanopores provides a real-time, electrical approach for probing the complex dynamics of nanoconfined electrical double layer. This has enabled the observation of the ionic memory effect in supercapacitors and produces new insights into the charging dynamics of supercapacitors. Such discoveries may stimulate the design of novel nanoionic devices.

Improving N-gram Language Models with Pre-trained Deep Transformer

Although n-gram language models (LMs) have been outperformed by the state-of-the-art neural LMs, they are still widely used in speech recognition due to its high efficiency in inference. In this paper, we demonstrate that n-gram LM can be improved by neural LMs through a text generation based data augmentation method. In contrast to previous approaches, we employ a large-scale general domain pre-training followed by in-domain fine-tuning strategy to construct deep Transformer based neural LMs. Large amount of in-domain text data is generated with the well trained deep Transformer to construct new n-gram LMs, which are then interpolated with baseline n-gram systems. Empirical studies on different speech recognition tasks show that the proposed approach can effectively improve recognition accuracy. In particular, our proposed approach brings significant relative word error rate reduction up to 6.0% for domains with limited in-domain data.

Revisiting Thin Silicon for Photovoltaics: A Technoeconomic Perspective

Adopting thin Si wafers for PV reduces capital expenditure (capex) and manufacturing cost, and accelerates the growth of PV manufacturing. There are two key questions about thin Si today: (a) how much can we still benefit economically from thinning wafers? (b) what are the technological challenges to transition to thin wafers? In this work, we re-evaluate the benefits and challenges of thin Si for current and future PV modules using a comprehensive techno-economic framework that couples device simulation, bottom-up cost modeling, and a cash-flow growth model. When adopting an advanced technology concept that features sufficiently good surface passivation, similarly high efficiencies are achievable for 50-um wafers as for 160-um ones. We then quantify the economic benefits for thin Si wafers in terms of poly-Si-to-module manufacturing capex, module cost, and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for utility PV systems. Particularly, LCOE favors thinner wafers for all investigated device architectures, and can potentially be reduced by more than 5% from the value of 160-um wafers. With further improvements in module efficiency, an advanced thin-wafer device concept with 50-um wafers could reduce manufacturing capex by 48%, module cost by 28%, and LCOE by 24%. Furthermore, we apply a sustainable growth model to investigate PV deployment scenarios in 2030. It is found that the state-of-the-art industry concept could not achieve the climate targets even with very aggressive financial scenarios, therefore the capex reduction benefit of thin wafers is needed to facilitate more rapid PV growth. Lastly, we discuss the remaining technological challenges and areas for innovation to enable high-yield manufacturing of high-efficiency PV modules with thin Si wafers.

On-chip nanomechanical filtering of quantum-dot single-photon sources

Semiconductor quantum dots in photonic integrated circuits enable scaling quantum-information processing to many single photons and quantum-optical gates. On-chip spectral filters are essential to achieve high-purity and coherent photon emission from quantum dots embedded in waveguides, without resorting to free-space optics. Such spectral filters should be tunable, to compensate for the inhomogeneous spectral distribution of the quantum dots transitions. Here, we report an on-chip filter monolithically integrated with quantum dots, that uses nanomechanical motion for tuning its resonant wavelength over 10 nm, enabling operation at cryogenic temperatures and avoiding cross-talk with the emitter. We demonstrate single-photon emission from a quantum dot under non-resonant excitation by employing only the on-chip filter. These results are key for the development of fully-integrated de-multiplexing, multi-path photon encoding schemes, and multi-emitter circuits.

Modelling and Dynamic Tracking Control of Industrial Vehicles with Tractor-trailer Structure

Existing works on control of tractor-trailers systems only consider the kinematics model without taking dynamics into account. Also, most of them treat the issue as a pure control theory problem whose solutions are difficult to implement. This paper presents a trajectory tracking control approach for a full-scale industrial tractor-trailers vehicle composed of a car-like tractor and arbitrary number of passive full trailers. To deal with dynamic effects of trailing units, a force sensor is innovatively installed at the connection between the tractor and the first trailer to measure the forces acting on the tractor. The tractor's dynamic model that explicitly accounts for the measured forces is derived. A tracking controller that compensates the pulling/pushing forces in real time and simultaneously drives the system onto desired trajectories is proposed. The propulsion map between throttle opening and the propulsion force is proposed to be modeled with a fifth-order polynomial. The parameters are estimated by fitting experimental data, in order to provide accurate driving force. Stability of the control algorithm is rigorously proved by Lyapunov methods. Experiments of full-size vehicles are conducted to validate the performance of the control approach.

Teacher-Student Learning Paradigm for Tri-training: An Efficient Method for Unlabeled Data Exploitation

Given that labeled data is expensive to obtain in real-world scenarios, many semi-supervised algorithms have explored the task of exploitation of unlabeled data. Traditional tri-training algorithm and tri-training with disagreement have shown promise in tasks where labeled data is limited. In this work, we introduce a new paradigm for tri-training, mimicking the real world teacher-student learning process. We show that the adaptive teacher-student thresholds used in the proposed method provide more control over the learning process with higher label quality. We perform evaluation on SemEval sentiment analysis task and provide comprehensive comparisons over experimental settings containing varied labeled versus unlabeled data rates. Experimental results show that our method outperforms other strong semi-supervised baselines, while requiring less number of labeled training samples.

Retrieval-based Localization Based on Domain-invariant Feature Learning under Changing Environments

Visual localization is a crucial problem in mobile robotics and autonomous driving. One solution is to retrieve images with known pose from a database for the localization of query images. However, in environments with drastically varying conditions (e.g. illumination changes, seasons, occlusion, dynamic objects), retrieval-based localization is severely hampered and becomes a challenging problem. In this paper, a novel domain-invariant feature learning method (DIFL) is proposed based on ComboGAN, a multi-domain image translation network architecture. By introducing a feature consistency loss (FCL) between the encoded features of the original image and translated image in another domain, we are able to train the encoders to generate domain-invariant features in a self-supervised manner. To retrieve a target image from the database, the query image is first encoded using the encoder belonging to the query domain to obtain a domain-invariant feature vector. We then preform retrieval by selecting the database image with the most similar domain-invariant feature vector. We validate the proposed approach on the CMU-Seasons dataset, where we outperform state-of-the-art learning-based descriptors in retrieval-based localization for high and medium precision scenarios.

LPD-Net: 3D Point Cloud Learning for Large-Scale Place Recognition and Environment Analysis

Point cloud based place recognition is still an open issue due to the difficulty in extracting local features from the raw 3D point cloud and generating the global descriptor, and it's even harder in the large-scale dynamic environments. In this paper, we develop a novel deep neural network, named LPD-Net (Large-scale Place Description Network), which can extract discriminative and generalizable global descriptors from the raw 3D point cloud. Two modules, the adaptive local feature extraction module and the graph-based neighborhood aggregation module, are proposed, which contribute to extract the local structures and reveal the spatial distribution of local features in the large-scale point cloud, with an end-to-end manner. We implement the proposed global descriptor in solving point cloud based retrieval tasks to achieve the large-scale place recognition. Comparison results show that our LPD-Net is much better than PointNetVLAD and reaches the state-of-the-art. We also compare our LPD-Net with the vision-based solutions to show the robustness of our approach to different weather and light conditions.

SeqLPD: Sequence Matching Enhanced Loop-Closure Detection Based on Large-Scale Point Cloud Description for Self-Driving Vehicles

Place recognition and loop-closure detection are main challenges in the localization, mapping and navigation tasks of self-driving vehicles. In this paper, we solve the loop-closure detection problem by incorporating the deep-learning based point cloud description method and the coarse-to-fine sequence matching strategy. More specifically, we propose a deep neural network to extract a global descriptor from the original large-scale 3D point cloud, then based on which, a typical place analysis approach is presented to investigate the feature space distribution of the global descriptors and select several super keyframes. Finally, a coarse-to-fine strategy, which includes a super keyframe based coarse matching stage and a local sequence matching stage, is presented to ensure the loop-closure detection accuracy and real-time performance simultaneously. Thanks to the sequence matching operation, the proposed approach obtains an improvement against the existing deep-learning based methods. Experiment results on a self-driving vehicle validate the effectiveness of the proposed loop-closure detection algorithm.
