Fidelity Imposed Network Edit (FINE) for Solving Ill-Posed Image Reconstruction

Deep learning (DL) is increasingly used to solve ill-posed inverse problems in imaging, such as reconstruction from noisy or incomplete data, as DL offers advantages over explicit image feature extractions in defining the needed prior. However, DL typically does not incorporate the precise physics of data generation or data fidelity. Instead, DL networks are trained to output some average response to an input. Consequently, DL image reconstruction contains errors, and may perform poorly when the test data deviates significantly from the training data, such as having new pathological features. To address this lack of data fidelity problem in DL image reconstruction, a novel approach, which we call fidelity-imposed network edit (FINE), is proposed. In FINE, a pre-trained prior network's weights are modified according to the physical model, on a test case. Our experiments demonstrate that FINE can achieve superior performance in two important inverse problems in neuroimaging: quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and under-sampled reconstruction in MRI.

Fast and interpretable classification of small X-ray diffraction datasets using data augmentation and deep neural networks

X-ray diffraction (XRD) data acquisition and analysis is among the most time-consuming steps in the development cycle of novel thin-film materials. We propose a machine-learning-enabled approach to predict crystallographic dimensionality and space group from a limited number of thin-film XRD patterns. We overcome the scarce-data problem intrinsic to novel materials development by coupling a supervised machine learning approach with a model agnostic, physics-informed data augmentation strategy using simulated data from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) and experimental data. As a test case, 115 thin-film metal halides spanning 3 dimensionalities and 7 space-groups are synthesized and classified. After testing various algorithms, we develop and implement an all convolutional neural network, with cross validated accuracies for dimensionality and space-group classification of 93% and 89%, respectively. We propose average class activation maps, computed from a global average pooling layer, to allow high model interpretability by human experimentalists, elucidating the root causes of misclassification. Finally, we systematically evaluate the maximum XRD pattern step size (data acquisition rate) before loss of predictive accuracy occurs, and determine it to be 0.16°, which enables an XRD pattern to be obtained and classified in 5.5 minutes or less.

Coordinating Large-Scale Robot Networks with Motion and Communication Uncertainties for Logistics Applications

In this paper, we focus on the problem of task allocation, cooperative path planning and motion coordination of the large-scale system with thousands of robots, aiming for practical applications in robotic warehouses and automated logistics systems. Particularly, we solve the life-long planning problem and guarantee the coordination performance of large-scale robot network in the presence of robot motion uncertainties and communication failures. A hierarchical planning and coordination structure is presented. The environment is divided into several sectors and a dynamic traffic heat-map is generated to describe the current sector-level traffic flow. In task planning level, a greedy task allocation method is implemented to assign the current task to the nearest free robot and the sector-level path is generated by comprehensively considering the traveling distance, the traffic heat-value distribution and the current robot/communication failures. In motion coordination level, local cooperative A* algorithm is implemented in each sector to generate the collision-free road-level path of each robot in the sector and the rolling planning structure is introduced to solve problems caused by motion and communication uncertainties. The effectiveness and practical applicability of the proposed approach are validated by large-scale simulations with more than one thousand robots and real laboratory experiments.

3D Object Detection Using Scale Invariant and Feature Reweighting Networks

3D object detection plays an important role in a large number of real-world applications. It requires us to estimate the localizations and the orientations of 3D objects in real scenes. In this paper, we present a new network architecture which focuses on utilizing the front view images and frustum point clouds to generate 3D detection results. On the one hand, a PointSIFT module is utilized to improve the performance of 3D segmentation. It can capture the information from different orientations in space and the robustness to different scale shapes. On the other hand, our network obtains the useful features and suppresses the features with less information by a SENet module. This module reweights channel features and estimates the 3D bounding boxes more effectively. Our method is evaluated on both KITTI dataset for outdoor scenes and SUN-RGBD dataset for indoor scenes. The experimental results illustrate that our method achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art methods especially when point clouds are highly sparse.

Possible nodeless $s^\pm$-wave superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene

Recent discovery of superconductivity in the twisted bilayer graphene has stimulated numerous theoretical proposals concerning its exact gap symmetry. Among them, $d+id$ or $p+ip$-wave were believed to be the most plausible solutions. Here considering the superconductivity emerges near a correlated insulating state and may be induced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, we apply the strong-coupling Eliashberg theory with both inter- and intraband quantum critical pairing interactions and discuss the possible gap symmetry in an effective low-energy four-orbital model. Our calculations reveal a nodeless $s^\pm$-wave as the most probable candidate for superconducting gap symmetry in the experimentally relevant parameter range. This solution is distinctly different from previous theoretical proposals. In particular, it contains interesting topological components in the valley space, which might be tuned by experimental manipulation of the valley degree of freedom.

Least absolute deviations uncertain regression with imprecise observations

Traditionally regression analysis answers questions about the relationships among variables based on the assumption that the observation values of variables are precise numbers. It has long been dominated by least squares techniques, mostly due to their elegant theoretical foundation and ease of implementation. However, in many cases, we can only get imprecise observation values and the assumptions upon which the least squares is based may not be valid. So this paper characterizes the imprecise data in terms of uncertain variables and proposes a novel robust approach under the principle of least absolute deviations to estimate the unknown parameters in uncertain regression models. Finally, numerical examples are documented to illustrate our method.

Nanomechanical single-photon routing

The merger between integrated photonics and quantum optics promises new opportunities within photonic quantum technology with the very significant progress on excellent photon-emitter interfaces and advanced optical circuits. A key missing functionality is rapid circuitry reconfigurability that ultimately does not introduce loss or emitter decoherence, and operating at a speed matching the photon generation and quantum memory storage time of the on-chip quantum emitter. This ambitious goal requires entirely new active quantum-photonic devices by extending the traditional approaches to reconfigurability. Here, by merging nano-optomechanics and deterministic photon-emitter interfaces we demonstrate on-chip single-photon routing with low loss, small device footprint, and an intrinsic time response approaching the spin coherence time of solid-state quantum emitters. The device is an essential building block for constructing advanced quantum photonic architectures on-chip, towards, e.g., coherent multi-photon sources, deterministic photon-photon quantum gates, quantum repeater nodes, or scalable quantum networks.

Accelerating Photovoltaic Materials Development via High-Throughput Experiments and Machine-Learning-Assisted Diagnosis

Accelerating the experimental cycle for new materials development is vital for addressing the grand energy challenges of the 21st century. We fabricate and characterize 75 unique halide perovskite-inspired solution-based thin-film materials within a two-month period, with 87% exhibiting band gaps between 1.2 eV and 2.4 eV that are of interest for energy-harvesting applications. This increased throughput is enabled by streamlining experimental workflows, developing a set of precursors amenable to high-throughput synthesis, and developing machine-learning assisted diagnosis. We utilize a deep neural network to classify compounds based on experimental X-ray diffraction data into 0D, 2D, and 3D structures more than 10 times faster than human analysis and with 90% accuracy. We validate our methods using lead-halide perovskites and extend the application to novel lead-free compositions. The wider synthesis window and faster cycle of learning enables three noteworthy scientific findings: (1) we realize four inorganic layered perovskites, A3B2Br9 (A = Cs, Rb; B = Bi, Sb) in thin-film form via one-step liquid deposition; (2) we report a multi-site lead-free alloy series that was not previously described in literature, Cs3(Bi1-xSbx)2(I1-xBrx)9; and (3) we reveal the effect on bandgap (reduction to <2 eV) and structure upon simultaneous alloying on the B-site and X-site of Cs3Bi2I9 with Sb and Br. This study demonstrates that combining an accelerated experimental cycle of learning and machine-learning based diagnosis represents an important step toward realizing fully-automated laboratories for materials discovery and development.

Characterizing machine learning process: A maturity framework

Academic literature on machine learning modeling fails to address how to make machine learning models work for enterprises. For example, existing machine learning processes cannot address how to define business use cases for an AI application, how to convert business requirements from offering managers into data requirements for data scientists, and how to continuously improve AI applications in term of accuracy and fairness, and how to customize general purpose machine learning models with industry, domain, and use case specific data to make them more accurate for specific situations etc. Making AI work for enterprises requires special considerations, tools, methods and processes. In this paper we present a maturity framework for machine learning model lifecycle management for enterprises. Our framework is a re-interpretation of the software Capability Maturity Model (CMM) for machine learning model development process. We present a set of best practices from our personal experience of building large scale real-world machine learning models to help organizations achieve higher levels of maturity independent of their starting point.

Beyond Google Play: A Large-Scale Comparative Study of Chinese Android App Markets

China is one of the largest Android markets in the world. As Chinese users cannot access Google Play to buy and install Android apps, a number of independent app stores have emerged and compete in the Chinese app market. Some of the Chinese app stores are pre-installed vendor-specific app markets (e.g., Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO), whereas others are maintained by large tech companies (e.g., Baidu, Qihoo 360 and Tencent). The nature of these app stores and the content available through them vary greatly, including their trustworthiness and security guarantees. As of today, the research community has not studied the Chinese Android ecosystem in depth. To fill this gap, we present the first large-scale comparative study that covers more than 6 million Android apps downloaded from 16 Chinese app markets and Google Play. We focus our study on catalog similarity across app stores, their features, publishing dynamics, and the prevalence of various forms of misbehavior (including the presence of fake, cloned and malicious apps). Our findings also suggest heterogeneous developer behavior across app stores, in terms of code maintenance, use of third-party services, and so forth. Overall, Chinese app markets perform substantially worse when taking active measures to protect mobile users and legit developers from deceptive and abusive actors, showing a significantly higher prevalence of malware, fake, and cloned apps than Google Play.

Quantum Observable Generalized Orthoalgebras

Let ${\cal S}(\mathcal{H})$ denote the set of all self-adjoint operators (not necessarily bounded) on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, which is the set of all physical quantities on a quantum system $\mathcal{H}$. We introduce a binary relation $\bot$ on ${\cal S}(\mathcal{H})$. We show that if $A\bot B$, then $A$ and $B$ are affiliated with some abelian von Neumann algebra. The relation $\bot$ induces a partial algebraic operation $\oplus$ on ${\cal S}(\mathcal{H})$. We prove that $({\cal S}({\mathcal{H}}), \bot, \oplus, 0)$ is a generalized orthoalgebra. This algebra is a generalization of the famous Birkhoff\,--\,von Neumann quantum logic model. It establishes a mathematical structure on all physical quantities on $\mathcal{H}$. In particular, we note that $({\cal S}({\mathcal{H}}), \bot, \oplus, 0)$ has a partial order $\preceq$, and prove that $A\preceq B$ if and only if $A$ has a value in $Δ$ implies that $B$ has a value in $Δ$ for every Borel set $Δ$ not containing $0$. Moreover, the existence of the infimum $A\wedge B$ and supremum $A\vee B$ for $A,B\in \mathcal{S}(\mathcal{H})$ (with respect to $\preceq$) is studied, and it is shown at the end that the position operator $Q$ and momentum operator $P$ in the Heisenberg commutation relation satisfy $Q\wedge P=0$.

Touch Your Heart: A Tone-aware Chatbot for Customer Care on Social Media

Chatbot has become an important solution to rapidly increasing customer care demands on social media in recent years. However, current work on chatbot for customer care ignores a key to impact user experience - tones. In this work, we create a novel tone-aware chatbot that generates toned responses to user requests on social media. We first conduct a formative research, in which the effects of tones are studied. Significant and various influences of different tones on user experience are uncovered in the study. With the knowledge of effects of tones, we design a deep learning based chatbot that takes tone information into account. We train our system on over 1.5 million real customer care conversations collected from Twitter. The evaluation reveals that our tone-aware chatbot generates as appropriate responses to user requests as human agents. More importantly, our chatbot is perceived to be even more empathetic than human agents.

Fostering User Engagement: Rhetorical Devices for Applause Generation Learnt from TED Talks

One problem that every presenter faces when delivering a public discourse is how to hold the listeners' attentions or to keep them involved. Therefore, many studies in conversation analysis work on this issue and suggest qualitatively con-structions that can effectively lead to audience's applause. To investigate these proposals quantitatively, in this study we an-alyze the transcripts of 2,135 TED Talks, with a particular fo-cus on the rhetorical devices that are used by the presenters for applause elicitation. Through conducting regression anal-ysis, we identify and interpret 24 rhetorical devices as triggers of audience applauding. We further build models that can rec-ognize applause-evoking sentences and conclude this work with potential implications.

See the Near Future: A Short-Term Predictive Methodology to Traffic Load in ITS

The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) targets to a coordinated traffic system by applying the advanced wireless communication technologies for road traffic scheduling. Towards an accurate road traffic control, the short-term traffic forecasting to predict the road traffic at the particular site in a short period is often useful and important. In existing works, Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model is a popular approach. The scheme however encounters two challenges: 1) the analysis on related data is insufficient whereas some important features of data may be neglected; and 2) with data presenting different features, it is unlikely to have one predictive model that can fit all situations. To tackle above issues, in this work, we develop a hybrid model to improve accuracy of SARIMA. In specific, we first explore the autocorrelation and distribution features existed in traffic flow to revise structure of the time series model. Based on the Gaussian distribution of traffic flow, a hybrid model with a Bayesian learning algorithm is developed which can effectively expand the application scenarios of SARIMA. We show the efficiency and accuracy of our proposal using both analysis and experimental studies. Using the real-world trace data, we show that the proposed predicting approach can achieve satisfactory performance in practice.

Urban Rail Transit System Operation Optimization A Game Theoretical Methodology

The Urban Rail Transit (URT) has been one of the major trip modes in cities worldwide. As the passengers arrive at variable rates in different time slots, e.g., rush and non-rush hours, the departure frequency at a site directly relates to perceived service quality of passengers; the high departure frequency, however, incurs more operation cost to URT. Therefore, a tradeoff between the interest of railway operator and the service quality of passengers needs to be addressed. In this paper, we develop a model on the operation method of train operation scheduling using a Stackelberg game model. The railway operator is modeled as the game leader and the passengers as the game follower, and an optimal departure frequency can be determine the tradeoff between passengers' service quality and operation cost. We present several numerical examples based on the operation data from Nanjing transit subway at China. The results demonstrate that the proposed model can significantly improve the traffic efficiency.

Atomic momentum patterns with narrower interval

We studied the atomic momentum distribution for a superposition of Bloch states spreading in the lowest band of an optical lattice after the action of the standing wave pulse. By designing the imposing pulse on this superposed state, an atomic momentum pattern appears with narrower interval between the adjacent peaks that can be far less than the double recoil momentum. The patterns with narrower interval come from the superposition of the action of the designed pulse on many Bloch states with quasi-momenta over the first Brillouin zone, where for each quasi-momentum there is an interference among several lowest bands. Our experimental result of narrow interval peaks is consistent with the theoretical simulation. The patterns of multi modes with different quasi-momenta are helpful for precise measurement and atomic manipulation.

A Beurling Theorem for Generalized Hardy Spaces on a Multiply Connected Domain

The object of this paper is to prove a version of the Beurling-Helson-Lowdenslager invariant subspace theorem for operators on certain Banach spaces of functions on a multiply connected domain in the complex plane. The norms for these spaces are either the usual Lebesgue and Hardy space norms or certain continuous gauge norms. In the Hardy space case the expected corollaries include the characterization of the cyclic vectors as the outer functions in this context, a demonstration that the set of analytic multiplication operators is maximal abelian and reflexive, and a determination of the closed operators that commute with all analytic multiplication operators.
