Coordinately Assisted Distillation of Quantum Coherence in Multipartite System

We investigate the issue of assisted coherence distillation in the asymptotic limit (considering infinite copies of the resource states), by coordinately performing the identical local operations on the auxiliary systems of each copy. When we further restrict the coordinate operations to projective measurements, the distillation process is branched into many sub-processes. Finally, a simple formula is given that the assisted distillable coherence should be the maximal average coherence of the residual states. The formula makes the experimental research of assisted coherence distillation possible and convenient, especially for the case that the system and its auxiliary are in mixed states. By using the formula,\ we for the first time study the assisted coherence distillation in multipartite systems. Monogamy-like inequalities are given to constrain the distribution of the assisted distillable coherence in the subsystems. Taking three-qubit system for example, we experimentally prepare two types of tripartite correlated states, i.e., the $W$-type and GHZ-type states in a linear optical setup, and experimentally explore the assisted coherence distillation. Theoretical and experimental results agree well to verify the distribution inequalities given by us. Three measures of multipartite quantum correlation are also considered. The close relationship between the assisted coherence distillation and the genuine multipartite correlation is revealed.

Unveiling quantum entanglement and correlation of sub-Ohmic and Ohmic baths for quantum phase transitions in dissipative systems

By employing the spin-boson model in a dense limit of environmental modes, quantum entanglement and correlation of sub-Ohmic and Ohmic baths for dissipative quantum phase transitions are numerically investigated based on the variational principle. With several measures borrowed from quantum information theory, three different types of singularities are found for the first-order, second-order, and Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions, respectively, and the values of transition points and critical exponents are accurately determined. Besides, the scaling form of the quantum discord in the Ohmic case is identified, quite different from that in the sub-Ohmic regime. In a two-spin model, two distinct behaviors of the quantum discord are uncovered: one is related to the quantum entanglement between two spins and the other is decided by the correlation function in the position space rather than the entanglement.

Improving Pre-movement Pattern Detection with Filter Bank Selection

Pre-movement decoding plays an important role in movement detection and is able to detect movement onset with low-frequency electroencephalogram (EEG) signals before the limb moves. In related studies, pre-movement decoding with standard task-related component analysis (STRCA) has been demonstrated to be efficient for classification between movement state and resting state. However, the accuracies of STRCA differ among subbands in the frequency domain. Due to individual differences, the best subband differs among subjects and is difficult to be determined. This study aims to improve the performance of the STRCA method by a feature selection on multiple subbands and avoid the selection of best subbands. This study first compares three frequency range settings ($M_1$: subbands with equally spaced bandwidths; $M_2$: subbands whose high cut-off frequencies are twice the low cut-off frequencies; $M_3$: subbands that start at some specific fixed frequencies and end at the frequencies in an arithmetic sequence.). Then, we develop a mutual information based technique to select the features in these subbands. A binary support vector machine classifier is used to classify the selected essential features. The results show that $M_3$ is a better setting than the other two settings. With the filter banks in $M_3$, the classification accuracy of the proposed FBTRCA achieves 0.8700$\pm$0.1022, which means a significantly improved performance compared to STRCA (0.8287$\pm$0.1101) as well as to the cross validation and testing method (0.8431$\pm$0.1078).

Ultrafast Optical Spectroscopy Evidence of Pseudogap and Electron-Phonon Coupling in an Iron-Based Superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

We use ultrafast optical spectroscopy to study the nonequilibrium quasiparticle relaxation dynamics of the iron-based superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $T_c=33.5$ K. Our results reveal a possible pseudogap ($Δ_{PG}$ = 2.4 $\pm$ 0.1 meV) below $T^*\approx 50$ K but prior to the opening of a superconducting gap ($Δ_{SC}$(0) $\approx$ 4.3 $\pm$ 0.1 meV). Measurements under high pump fluence real two distinct, coherent phonon oscillations with 1.95 and 5.51 THz frequencies, respectively. The high-frequency $A_{1g}$(2) mode corresponds to the $c-$axis polarized vibrations of FeAs planes with a nominal electron-phonon coupling constant $λ_{A_{1g}(2)}$ = 0.194 $\pm$ 0.02. Our findings suggest that the pseudogap is likely a precursor of superconductivity, and the electron-phonon coupling may play an essential role in the superconducting pairing in KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$.

Large-bandwidth transduction between an optical single quantum-dot molecule and a superconducting resonator

Quantum transduction between the microwave and optical domains is an outstanding challenge for long-distance quantum networks based on superconducting qubits. For all transducers realized to date, the generally weak light-matter coupling does not allow high transduction efficiency, large bandwidth, and low noise simultaneously. Here we show that a large electric dipole moment of an exciton in an optically active self-assembled quantum dot molecule (QDM) efficiently couples to a microwave resonator field at a single-photon level. This allows for transduction between microwave and optical photons without coherent optical pump fields to enhance the interaction. With an on-chip device, we demonstrate a sizeable single-photon coupling strength of 16 MHz. Thanks to the fast exciton decay rate in the QDM, the transduction bandwidth between an optical and microwave resonator photon reaches several 100s of MHz.

Realizing Kagome Band Structure in Two-Dimensional Kagome Surface States of $RV_{6}Sn_{6}$ ($R$=Gd,Ho)

We report angle resolved photoemission experiments on a newly discovered family of kagome metals $RV_{6}Sn_{6}$ ($R$=Gd, Ho). Intrinsic bulk states and surface states of the vanadium kagome layer are differentiated from those of other atomic sublattices by the real-space resolution of the measurements with a small beam spot. Characteristic Dirac cone, saddle point and flat bands of the kagome lattice are observed. Our results establish the two-dimensional (2D) kagome surface states as a new platform to investigate the intrinsic kagome physics.

Penalty and Augmented Lagrangian Methods for Constrained DC Programming

In this paper we consider a class of structured nonsmooth difference-of-convex (DC) constrained DC program in which the first convex component of the objective and constraints is the sum of a smooth and nonsmooth functions while their second convex component is the supremum of finitely many convex smooth functions. The existing methods for this problem usually have a weak convergence guarantee or require a feasible initial point. Inspired by the recent work (Math Oper. Res. 42(1):95--118, 2017 by Pang et al.), in this paper we propose two infeasible methods with strong convergence guarantee for the considered problem. The first one is a penalty method that consists of finding an approximate D-stationary point of a sequence of penalty subproblems. We show that any feasible accumulation point of the solution sequence generated by such a penalty method is a B-stationary point of the problem under a weakest possible assumption that it satisfies a pointwise Slater constraint qualification (PSCQ). The second one is an augmented Lagrangian (AL) method that consists of finding an approximate D-stationary point of a sequence of AL subproblems. Under the same PSCQ condition as for the penalty method, we show that any feasible accumulation point of the solution sequence generated by such an AL method is a B-stationary point of the problem, and moreover, it satisfies a KKT type of optimality condition for the problem, together with any accumulation point of the sequence of a set of auxiliary Lagrangian multipliers. We also propose an efficient successive convex approximation method for computing an approximate D-stationary point of the penalty and AL subproblems. Finally, some numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed methods.

Excitonic transport driven by repulsive dipolar interaction in a van der Waals heterostructure

Dipolar bosonic gases are currently the focus of intensive research due to their interesting many-body physics in the quantum regime. Their experimental embodiments range from Rydberg atoms to GaAs double quantum wells and van der Waals heterostructures built from transition metal dichalcogenides. Although quantum gases are very dilute, mutual interactions between particles could lead to exotic many-body phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation and high-temperature superfluidity. Here, we report the effect of repulsive dipolar interactions on the dynamics of interlayer excitons in the dilute regime. By using spatial and time-resolved photoluminescence imaging, we observe the dynamics of exciton transport, enabling a direct estimation of the exciton mobility. The presence of interactions significantly modifies the diffusive transport of excitons, effectively acting as a source of drift force and enhancing the diffusion coefficient by one order of magnitude. The repulsive dipolar interactions combined with the electrical control of interlayer excitons opens up appealing new perspectives for excitonic devices.

Emergence of Quantum Confinement in Topological Kagome Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ family

Quantum confinement is a restriction on the motion of electrons in a material to specific region, resulting in discrete energy levels rather than continuous energy bands. In certain materials quantum confinement could dramatically reshape the electronic structure and properties of the surface with respect to the bulk. Here, in the recently discovered kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) family of materials, we unveil the dominant role of quantum confinement in determining their surface electronic structure. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurement and density-functional theory simulation, we report the observations of two-dimensional quantum well states due to the confinement of bulk electron pocket and Dirac cone to the nearly isolated surface layer. The theoretical calculations on the slab model also suggest that the ARPES observed spectra are almost entirely contributed by the top two layers. Our results not only explain the disagreement of band structures between the recent experiments and calculations, but also suggest an equally important role played by quantum confinement, together with strong correlation and band topology, in shaping the electronic properties of this family of materials.

L3C-Stereo: Lossless Compression for Stereo Images

A large number of autonomous driving tasks need high-definition stereo images, which requires a large amount of storage space. Efficiently executing lossless compression has become a practical problem. Commonly, it is hard to make accurate probability estimates for each pixel. To tackle this, we propose L3C-Stereo, a multi-scale lossless compression model consisting of two main modules: the warping module and the probability estimation module. The warping module takes advantage of two view feature maps from the same domain to generate a disparity map, which is used to reconstruct the right view so as to improve the confidence of the probability estimate of the right view. The probability estimation module provides pixel-wise logistic mixture distributions for adaptive arithmetic coding. In the experiments, our method outperforms the hand-crafted compression methods and the learning-based method on all three datasets used. Then, we show that a better maximum disparity can lead to a better compression effect. Furthermore, thanks to a compression property of our model, it naturally generates a disparity map of an acceptable quality for the subsequent stereo tasks.

Serial-EMD: Fast Empirical Mode Decomposition Method for Multi-dimensional Signals Based on Serialization

Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) has developed into a prominent tool for adaptive, scale-based signal analysis in various fields like robotics, security and biomedical engineering. Since the dramatic increase in amount of data puts forward higher requirements for the capability of real-time signal analysis, it is difficult for existing EMD and its variants to trade off the growth of data dimension and the speed of signal analysis. In order to decompose multi-dimensional signals at a faster speed, we present a novel signal-serialization method (serial-EMD), which concatenates multi-variate or multi-dimensional signals into a one-dimensional signal and uses various one-dimensional EMD algorithms to decompose it. To verify the effects of the proposed method, synthetic multi-variate time series, artificial 2D images with various textures and real-world facial images are tested. Compared with existing multi-EMD algorithms, the decomposition time becomes significantly reduced. In addition, the results of facial recognition with Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) extracted using our method can achieve a higher accuracy than those obtained by existing multi-EMD algorithms, which demonstrates the superior performance of our method in terms of the quality of IMFs. Furthermore, this method can provide a new perspective to optimize the existing EMD algorithms, that is, transforming the structure of the input signal rather than being constrained by developing envelope computation techniques or signal decomposition methods. In summary, the study suggests that the serial-EMD technique is a highly competitive and fast alternative for multi-dimensional signal analysis.

Generalized Relation Learning with Semantic Correlation Awareness for Link Prediction

Developing link prediction models to automatically complete knowledge graphs has recently been the focus of significant research interest. The current methods for the link prediction taskhavetwonaturalproblems:1)the relation distributions in KGs are usually unbalanced, and 2) there are many unseen relations that occur in practical situations. These two problems limit the training effectiveness and practical applications of the existing link prediction models. We advocate a holistic understanding of KGs and we propose in this work a unified Generalized Relation Learning framework GRL to address the above two problems, which can be plugged into existing link prediction models. GRL conducts a generalized relation learning, which is aware of semantic correlations between relations that serve as a bridge to connect semantically similar relations. After training with GRL, the closeness of semantically similar relations in vector space and the discrimination of dissimilar relations are improved. We perform comprehensive experiments on six benchmarks to demonstrate the superior capability of GRL in the link prediction task. In particular, GRL is found to enhance the existing link prediction models making them insensitive to unbalanced relation distributions and capable of learning unseen relations.

JTAV: Jointly Learning Social Media Content Representation by Fusing Textual, Acoustic, and Visual Features

Learning social media content is the basis of many real-world applications, including information retrieval and recommendation systems, among others. In contrast with previous works that focus mainly on single modal or bi-modal learning, we propose to learn social media content by fusing jointly textual, acoustic, and visual information (JTAV). Effective strategies are proposed to extract fine-grained features of each modality, that is, attBiGRU and DCRNN. We also introduce cross-modal fusion and attentive pooling techniques to integrate multi-modal information comprehensively. Extensive experimental evaluation conducted on real-world datasets demonstrates our proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches by a large margin.

Rank $n$ swapping algebra for Grassmannian

The rank $n$ swapping algebra is the Poisson algebra defined on the ordered pairs of points on a circle using the linking numbers, where a subspace of $(\mathbb{K}^n \times \mathbb{K}^{n*})^r/\operatorname{GL}(n,\mathbb{K})$ is its geometric mode. In this paper, we find an injective Poisson homomorphism from the Poisson algebra on Grassmannian $G_{n,r}$ arising from boundary measurement map to the rank $n$ swapping fraction algebra.

Butterfly-like anisotropic magnetoresistance and angle-dependent Berry phase in Type-II Weyl semimetal WP2

Weyl semimetal emerges as a new topologically nontrivial phase of matter, hosting low-energy excitations of massless Weyl fermions. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2. Transport studies show a butterfly-like magnetoresistance at low temperature, reflecting the anisotropy of the electron Fermi surfaces. The four-lobed feature gradually evolves into a two-lobed one upon increasing temperature, mainly due to the reduced relative contribution of electron Fermi surfaces compared to hole Fermi surfaces for the magnetoresistance. Moreover, angle-dependent Berry phase is further discovered from the quantum oscillations, which is ascribed to the effective manipulation of the extremal Fermi orbits by the magnetic field to feel the nearby topological singularities in the momentum space. The revealed topological characters and anisotropic Fermi surfaces of WP2 substantially enrich the physical properties of Weyl semimetals and hold great promises in topological electronic and Fermitronic device applications.

Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Topology by Charge Carrier Engineering in intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi4Te7

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) MnBi2Te4 and MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n are expected to realize the high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and dissipationless electrical transport. Extensive efforts have been made on this field but there is still lack of ideal MTI candidate with magnetic ordering of ferromagnetic (FM) ground state. Here, we demonstrate a MTI sample of Mn(Bi0.7Sb0.3)4Te7 which holds the coexistence of FM ground state and topological non-triviality. The dramatic modulation of the magnetism is induced by a charge carrier engineering process by the way of Sb substitution in MnBi4Te7 matrix with AFM ordering. The evolution of magnetism in Mn(Bi1-xSbx)4Te7 is systematically investigated by magnetic measurements and theoretical calculations. The clear topological surface states of the FM sample of x = 0.3 are also verified by angle-resolved photoemission spectra. We also aware that the FM sample of x = 0.3 is close to the charge neutral point. Therefore, the demonstration of intrinsic FM-MTI of Mn(Bi0.7Sb0.3)4Te7 in this work sheds light to the further studies of QAHE realization and optimizations.

McShane identities for Higher Teichmüller theory and the Goncharov-Shen potential

We derive generalizations of McShane's identity for higher ranked surface group representations by studying a family of mapping class group invariant functions introduced by Goncharov and Shen which generalize the notion of horocycle lengths. In particular, we obtain McShane-type identities for finite-area cusped convex real projective surfaces by generalizing the Birman--Series geodesic scarcity theorem. More generally, we establish McShane-type identities for positive surface group representations with loxodromic boundary monodromy, as well as McShane-type inequalities for general rank positive representations with unipotent boundary monodromy. Our identities are systematically expressed in terms of projective invariants, and we study these invariants: we establish boundedness and Fuchsian rigidity results for triple and cross ratios. We apply our identities to derive the simple spectral discreteness of unipotent-bordered positive representations, collar lemmas, and generalizations of the Thurston metric.

Automated Measurements of Key Morphological Features of Human Embryos for IVF

A major challenge in clinical In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is selecting the highest quality embryo to transfer to the patient in the hopes of achieving a pregnancy. Time-lapse microscopy provides clinicians with a wealth of information for selecting embryos. However, the resulting movies of embryos are currently analyzed manually, which is time consuming and subjective. Here, we automate feature extraction of time-lapse microscopy of human embryos with a machine-learning pipeline of five convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our pipeline consists of (1) semantic segmentation of the regions of the embryo, (2) regression predictions of fragment severity, (3) classification of the developmental stage, and object instance segmentation of (4) cells and (5) pronuclei. Our approach greatly speeds up the measurement of quantitative, biologically relevant features that may aid in embryo selection.
