Parameterized Synthetic Image Data Set for Fisheye Lens

Based on different projection geometry, a fisheye image can be presented as a parameterized non-rectilinear image. Deep neural networks(DNN) is one of the solutions to extract parameters for fisheye image feature description. However, a large number of images are required for training a reasonable prediction model for DNN. In this paper, we propose to extend the scale of the training dataset using parameterized synthetic images. It effectively boosts the diversity of images and avoids the data scale limitation. To simulate different viewing angles and distances, we adopt controllable parameterized projection processes on transformation. The reliability of the proposed method is proved by testing images captured by our fisheye camera. The synthetic dataset is the first dataset that is able to extend to a big scale labeled fisheye image dataset. It is accessible via: http://www2.leuphana.de/misl/fisheye-data-set/.

Gate-recessed E-mode p-channel HFET with high on-current based on GaN/AlN 2D hole gas

High-performance p-channel transistors are crucial to implementing efficient complementary circuits in wide-bandgap electronics, but progress on such devices has lagged far behind their powerful electron-based counterparts due to the inherent challenges of manipulating holes in wide-gap semiconductors. Building on recent advances in materials growth, this work sets simultaneous records in both on-current (10 mA/mm) and on-off modulation (four orders) for the GaN/AlN wide-bandgap p-FET structure. A compact analytical pFET model is derived, and the results are benchmarked against the various alternatives in the literature, clarifying the heterostructure trade-offs to enable integrated wide-bandgap CMOS for next-generation compact high-power devices.

Structure retrieval at atomic resolution in the presence of multiple scattering of the electron probe

The projected electrostatic potential of a thick crystal is reconstructed at atomic-resolution from experimental scanning transmission electron microscopy data recorded using a new generation fast- readout electron camera. This practical and deterministic inversion of the equations encapsulating multiple scattering that were written down by Bethe in 1928 removes the restriction of established methods to ultrathin ($\lesssim 50$ Å) samples. Instruments already coming on-line can overcome the remaining resolution-limiting effects in this method due to finite probe-forming aperture size, spatial incoherence and residual lens aberrations.

A polarization-induced 2D hole gas in undoped gallium nitride quantum wells

The long-missing polarization-induced two-dimensional hole gas is finally observed in undoped gallium nitride quantum wells. Experimental results provide unambiguous proof that a 2D hole gas in GaN grown on AlN does not need acceptor doping, and can be formed entirely by the difference in the internal polarization fields across the semiconductor heterojunction. The measured 2D hole gas densities, about $4 \times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, are among the highest among all known semiconductors and remain unchanged down to cryogenic temperatures. Some of the lowest sheet resistances of all wide-bandgap semiconductors are seen. The observed results provide a new probe for studying the valence band structure and transport properties of wide-bandgap nitride interfaces, and simultaneously enable the missing component for gallium nitride-based p-channel transistors for energy-efficient electronics.

Analysis of Nederlof's algorithm for subset sum

We show that Nederlof's algorithm [Information Processing Letters, 118 (2017), 15-16] for constructing a proof that the number of subsets summing to a particular integer equals a claimed quantity is flawed because: 1) its consistence is not kept; 2) the proposed recurrence formula is incorrect.

Deep Learning Framework for Multi-class Breast Cancer Histology Image Classification

In this work, we present a deep learning framework for multi-class breast cancer image classification as our submission to the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition (ICIAR) 2018 Grand Challenge on BreAst Cancer Histology images (BACH). As these histology images are too large to fit into GPU memory, we first propose using Inception V3 to perform patch level classification. The patch level predictions are then passed through an ensemble fusion framework involving majority voting, gradient boosting machine (GBM), and logistic regression to obtain the image level prediction. We improve the sensitivity of the Normal and Benign predicted classes by designing a Dual Path Network (DPN) to be used as a feature extractor where these extracted features are further sent to a second layer of ensemble prediction fusion using GBM, logistic regression, and support vector machine (SVM) to refine predictions. Experimental results demonstrate our framework shows a 12.5$\%$ improvement over the state-of-the-art model.

The Asymptotic Capacity of Private Search

The private search problem is introduced, where a dataset comprised of $L$ i.i.d. records is replicated across $N$ non-colluding servers, each record takes values uniformly from an alphabet of size $K$, and a user wishes to search for all records that match a privately chosen value, without revealing any information about the chosen value to any individual server. The capacity of private search is the maximum number of bits of desired information that can be retrieved per bit of download. The asymptotic (large $K$) capacity of private search is shown to be $1-1/N$, even as the scope of private search is further generalized to allow approximate (OR) search over a number of realizations that grows with $K$. The results are based on the asymptotic behavior of a new converse bound for private information retrieval with arbitrarily dependent messages.

Deep sub-Ångstrom imaging of 2D materials with a high dynamic range detector

Aberration-corrected optics have made electron microscopy at atomic-resolution a widespread and often essential tool for nanocharacterization. Image resolution is dominated by beam energy and the numerical aperture of the lens (α), with state-of-the-art reaching ~0.47 Å at 300 keV. Two-dimensional materials are imaged at lower beam energies to avoid knock-on damage, limiting spatial resolution to ~1 Å. Here, by combining a new electron microscope pixel array detector with the dynamic range to record the complete distribution of transmitted electrons and full-field ptychography to recover phase information from the full phase space, we increased the spatial resolution well beyond the traditional lens limitations. At 80 keV beam energy, our ptychographic reconstructions significantly improved image contrast of single-atom defects in MoS2, reaching an information limit close to 5α, corresponding to a 0.39 Å Abbe resolution, at the same dose and imaging conditions where conventional imaging modes reach only 0.98 Å.

Theory and Practice of Electron Diffraction from Single Atoms and Extended Objects using an Electron Microscope Pixel Array Detector

What does the diffraction pattern from a single atom look like? How does it differ from the scattering from long range potential? With the development of new high-dynamic range pixel array detectors to measure the complete momentum distribution, these questions have immediate relevance for designing and understanding momentum-resolved imaging modes. We explore the asymptotic limits of long range and short range potentials. We use a simple quantum mechanical model to explain the general and asymptotic limits for the probability distribution in both and real and reciprocal space. Features in the scattering potential much larger than the probe size cause the bright-field disk to deflect uniformly, while features much smaller than the probe size, instead of a deflection cause a redistribution of intensity within the bright-field disk. Because long range and short range features are encoded differently in the diffraction pattern, it is possible to separate their contributions in differential phase contrast (DPC) or Center-of-Mass (CoM) imaging. The shape profiles for atomic resolution CoM imaging are dominated by the shape of the probe gradient and not the highly-singular atomic potentials or their local fields. Instead, only the peak height shows an atomic-number sensitivity, whose precise dependence is determined by the convergence angle. At lower convergence angles, the contrast oscillates with increasing atomic number, similar to bright field imaging. The range of collection angles impacts DPC and CoM imaging differently, with CoM being more sensitive to the upper cutoff limit, while DPC is more sensitive to the lower cutoff.

Adsorption-controlled growth of La-doped BaSnO3 by molecular-beam epitaxy

Epitaxial La doped BaSnO3 films were grown in an adsorption controlled regime by molecular beam epitaxy, where the excess volatile SnOx desorbs from the film surface. A film grown on a (001) DyScO3 substrate exhibited a mobility of 183 cm^2 V^-1 s^-1 at room temperature and 400 cm^2 V^-1 s^-1 at 10 K, despite the high concentration (1.2x10^11 cm^-2) of threading dislocations present. In comparison to other reports, we observe a much lower concentration of (BaO)2 Ruddlesden Popper crystallographic shear faults. This suggests that in addition to threading dislocations that other defects possibly (BaO)2 crystallographic shear defects or point defects significantly reduce the electron mobility.

A third-order discrete unified gas kinetic scheme for continuum and rarefied flows: low-speed isothermal case

An efficient third-order discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) with efficiency is presented in this work for simulating continuum and rarefied flows. By employing two-stage time-stepping scheme and the high-order DUGKS flux reconstruction strategy, third-order of accuracy in both time and space can be achieved in the present method. It is also analytically proven that the second-order DUGKS is a special case of the present method. Compared with the high-order lattice Boltzmann equation {LBE} based methods, the present method is capable to deal with the rarefied flows by adopting the Newton-Cotes quadrature to approximate the integrals of moments. Instead of being constrained by the second-order (or lower-order) of accuracy in time splitting scheme as in the conventional high-order Runge-Kutta (RK) based kinetic methods, the present method solves the original BE, which overcomes the limitation in time accuracy. Typical benchmark tests are carried out for comprehensive evaluation of the present method. It is observed in the tests that the present method is advantageous over the original DUGKS in accuracy and capturing delicate flow structures. Moreover, the efficiency of the present third-order method is also shown in simulating rarefied flows.

Capital flow constrained lot sizing problem with loss of goodwill and loan

We introduce capital flow constraints, loss of good will and loan to the lot sizing problem. Capital flow constraint is different from traditional capacity constraints: when a manufacturer launches production, its present capital should not be less than its present total production cost; otherwise, it must decrease production quantity or suspend production. Unsatisfied demand in one period may cause customer's demand to shrink in the next period considering loss of goodwill. Fixed loan can be adopted in the starting period for production. A mixed integer model for a deterministic single-item problem is constructed. Based on the analysis about the structure of optimal solutions, we approximate it to a traveling salesman problem, and divide it into sub-linear programming problems without integer variables. A forward recursive algorithm with heuristic adjustments is proposed to solve it. When unit variable production costs are equal and goodwill loss rate is zero, the algorithm can obtain optimal solutions. Under other situations, numerical comparisons with CPLEX 12.6.2 show our algorithm can reach optimal in most cases and has computation time advantage for large-size problems. Numerical tests also demonstrate that initial capital availability as well as loan interest rate can substantially affect the manufacturer's optimal lot sizing decisions.

Single-photon-driven high-order sideband transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit quantum electrodynamics system

We report the experimental observation of high-order sideband transitions at the single-photon level in a quantum circuit system of a flux qubit ultrastrongly coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator. With the coupling strength reaching 10% of the resonator's fundamental frequency, we obtain clear signatures of higher-order red and first-order blue-sideband transitions, which are mainly due to the ultrastrong Rabi coupling. Our observation advances the understanding of ultrastrongly-coupled systems and paves the way to study high-order processes in the quantum Rabi model at the single-photon level.

Single item stochastic lot sizing problem considering capital flow and business overdraft

This paper introduces capital flow to the single item stochastic lot sizing problem. A retailer can leverage business overdraft to deal with unexpected capital shortage, but needs to pay interest if its available balance goes below zero. A stochastic dynamic programming model maximizing expected final capital increment is formulated to solve the problem to optimality. We then investigate the performance of four controlling policies: ($R, Q$), ($R, S$), ($s, S$) and ($s$, $\overline{Q}$, $S$); for these policies, we adopt simulation-genetic algorithm to obtain approximate values of the controlling parameters. Finally, a simulation-optimization heuristic is also employed to solve this problem. Computational comparisons among these approaches show that policy $(s, S)$ and policy $(s, \overline{Q}, S)$ provide performance close to that of optimal solutions obtained by stochastic dynamic programming, while simulation-optimization heuristic offers advantages in terms of computational efficiency. Our numerical tests also show that capital availability as well as business overdraft interest rate can substantially affect the retailer's optimal lot sizing decisions.

Additional details about the thermal design error in 'A Photon Thermal Diode'

This note supplements a Reply [1] to a Comment [2] which identified a fundamental symmetry error we made in the original experimental study of a photon thermal diode [3]. For thermal specialists, here we provide some additional details about the thermal estimate originally used to justify omitting the cold-side thermal collimator, and the reasons for its failure. Catch'Em All: Locating Multiple Diffusion Sources in Networks with Partial Observations

This paper studies the problem of locating multiple diffusion sources in networks with partial observations. We propose a new source localization algorithm, named Optimal-Jordan-Cover (OJC). The algorithm first extracts a subgraph using a candidate selection algorithm that selects source candidates based on the number of observed infected nodes in their neighborhoods. Then, in the extracted subgraph, OJC finds a set of nodes that "cover" all observed infected nodes with the minimum radius. The set of nodes is called the Jordan cover, and is regarded as the set of diffusion sources. Considering the heterogeneous susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) diffusion in the Erdos-Renyi (ER) random graph, we prove that OJC can locate all sources with probability one asymptotically with partial observations. OJC is a polynomial-time algorithm in terms of network size. However, the computational complexity increases exponentially in $m,$ the number of sources. We further propose a low-complexity heuristic based on the K-Means for approximating the Jordan cover, named Approximate-Jordan-Cover (AJC). Simulations on random graphs and real networks demonstrate that both AJC and OJC significantly outperform other heuristic algorithms.

Method for identifying electromagnetically induced transparency in a tunable circuit quantum electrodynamics system

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been realized in atomic systems, but fulfilling the EIT conditions for artificial atoms made from superconducting circuits is a more difficult task. Here we report an experimental observation of the EIT in a tunable three-dimensional transmon by probing the cavity transmission. To fulfill the EIT conditions, we tune the transmon to adjust its damping rates by utilizing the effect of the cavity on the transmon states. From the experimental observations, we clearly identify the EIT and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) regimes as well as the transition regime in between. Also, the experimental data demonstrate that the threshold $Ω_{\rm AIC}$ determined by the Akaike information criterion can describe the EIT-ATS transition better than the threshold $Ω_{\rm EIT}$ given by the EIT theory.

Shortcuts to adiabatic passage for fast generation of three-atom singlet state by transitionless quantum driving

Motivated by transitionless quantum driving, we construct shortcuts to adiabatic passage in a three-atom system to create a singlet state with the help of quantum zeno dynamics and non-resonant lasers. The influence of various decoherence processes is discussed by numerical simulation and the results reveal that the scheme is fast and robust against decoherence and operational imperfection. We also investigate how to select the experimental parameters to control the cavity dissipation and atomic spontaneous emission which will have an application value in experiment.
