Transformer-based Joint Source Channel Coding for Textual Semantic Communication

The Space-Air-Ground-Sea integrated network calls for more robust and secure transmission techniques against jamming. In this paper, we propose a textual semantic transmission framework for robust transmission, which utilizes the advanced natural language processing techniques to model and encode sentences. Specifically, the textual sentences are firstly split into tokens using wordpiece algorithm, and are embedded to token vectors for semantic extraction by Transformer-based encoder. The encoded data are quantized to a fixed length binary sequence for transmission, where binary erasure, symmetric, and deletion channels are considered for transmission. The received binary sequences are further decoded by the transformer decoders into tokens used for sentence reconstruction. Our proposed approach leverages the power of neural networks and attention mechanism to provide reliable and efficient communication of textual data in challenging wireless environments, and simulation results on semantic similarity and bilingual evaluation understudy prove the superiority of the proposed model in semantic transmission.

Hybrid Knowledge-Data Driven Channel Semantic Acquisition and Beamforming for Cell-Free Massive MIMO

This paper focuses on advancing outdoor wireless systems to better support ubiquitous extended reality (XR) applications, and close the gap with current indoor wireless transmission capabilities. We propose a hybrid knowledge-data driven method for channel semantic acquisition and multi-user beamforming in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Specifically, we firstly propose a data-driven multiple layer perceptron (MLP)-Mixer-based auto-encoder for channel semantic acquisition, where the pilot signals, CSI quantizer for channel semantic embedding, and CSI reconstruction for channel semantic extraction are jointly optimized in an end-to-end manner. Moreover, based on the acquired channel semantic, we further propose a knowledge-driven deep-unfolding multi-user beamformer, which is capable of achieving good spectral efficiency with robustness to imperfect CSI in outdoor XR scenarios. By unfolding conventional successive over-relaxation (SOR)-based linear beamforming scheme with deep learning, the proposed beamforming scheme is capable of adaptively learning the optimal parameters to accelerate convergence and improve the robustness to imperfect CSI. The proposed deep unfolding beamforming scheme can be used for access points (APs) with fully-digital array and APs with hybrid analog-digital array. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in improving the accuracy of channel acquisition, as well as reducing complexity in both CSI acquisition and beamformer design. The proposed beamforming method achieves approximately 96% of the converged spectrum efficiency performance after only three iterations in downlink transmission, demonstrating its efficacy and potential to improve outdoor XR applications.

Broadband Channel Estimation for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided mmWave Massive MIMO Systems

This paper investigates the broadband channel estimation (CE) for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems. The CE for such systems is a challenging task due to the large dimension of both the active massive MIMO at the base station (BS) and passive IRS. To address this problem, this paper proposes a compressive sensing (CS)-based CE solution for IRS-aided mmWave massive MIMO systems, whereby the angular channel sparsity of large-scale array at mmWave is exploited for improved CE with reduced pilot overhead. Specifically, we first propose a downlink pilot transmission framework. By designing the pilot signals based on the prior knowledge that the line-of-sight dominated BS-to-IRS channel is known, the high-dimensional channels for BS-to-user and IRS-to-user can be jointly estimated based on CS theory. Moreover, to efficiently estimate broadband channels, a distributed orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is exploited, where the common sparsity shared by the channels at different subcarriers is utilized. Additionally, the redundant dictionary to combat the power leakage is also designed for the enhanced CE performance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Sensing User's Channel and Location with Terahertz Extra-Large Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface under Hybrid-Field Beam Squint Effect

This paper investigates the sensing of user's uplink channel and location in terahertz extra-large reconfigurable intelligent surface (XL-RIS) systems, where the unique hybrid far-near field effect and the beam squint effect caused by the XL array aperture as well as the XL bandwidth are overcome. Specifically, we first propose a joint channel and location sensing scheme, which consists of a location-assisted generalized multiple measurement vector orthogonal matching pursuit (LA-GMMV-OMP) algorithm for channel estimation (CE) and a complete dictionary based localization (CDL) scheme, where a frequency selective polar-domain redundant dictionary is proposed to overcome the hybrid field beam squint effect. The CE module outputs coarse on-grid angle estimation (respectively observed from the BS and RIS) to the localization module, which returns the fine off-grid angle estimation to improve CE. Particularly, with RIS, CDL can obtain user's location via line intersection, and a polar-domain gradient descent (PGD) algorithm at the base station is proposed to achieve the off-grid angle estimation with super-resolution accuracy. Additionally, to further reduce the sensing overhead, we propose a partial dictionary-based localization scheme, which is decoupled from CE, where RIS is served as an anchor to lock the user on the hyperbola according to time difference of arrival and the user's off-grid location can be obtained by using the proposed PGD algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the two proposed localization schemes and the proposed CE scheme over state-of-the-art baseline approaches.

R-PMAC: A Robust Preamble Based MAC Mechanism Applied in Industrial Internet of Things

This paper proposes a novel media access control (MAC) mechanism, called the robust preamble-based MAC mechanism (R-PMAC), which can be applied to power line communication (PLC) networks in the context of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Compared with other MAC mechanisms such as P-MAC and the MAC layer of IEEE1901.1, R-PMAC has higher networking speed. Besides, it supports whitelist authentication and functions properly in the presence of data frame loss. Firstly, we outline three basic mechanisms of R-PMAC, containing precise time difference calculation, preambles generation and short ID allocation. Secondly, we elaborate its networking process of single layer and multiple layers. Thirdly, we illustrate its robust mechanisms, including collision handling and data retransmission. Moreover, a low-cost hardware platform is established to measure the time of connecting hundreds of PLC nodes for the R-PMAC, P-MAC, and IEEE1901.1 mechanisms in a real power line environment. The experiment results show that R-PMAC outperforms the other mechanisms by achieving a 50% reduction in networking time. These findings indicate that the R-PMAC mechanism holds great potential for quickly and effectively building a PLC network in actual industrial scenarios.

Concurrent Classifier Error Detection (CCED) in Large Scale Machine Learning Systems

The complexity of Machine Learning (ML) systems increases each year, with current implementations of large language models or text-to-image generators having billions of parameters and requiring billions of arithmetic operations. As these systems are widely utilized, ensuring their reliable operation is becoming a design requirement. Traditional error detection mechanisms introduce circuit or time redundancy that significantly impacts system performance. An alternative is the use of Concurrent Error Detection (CED) schemes that operate in parallel with the system and exploit their properties to detect errors. CED is attractive for large ML systems because it can potentially reduce the cost of error detection. In this paper, we introduce Concurrent Classifier Error Detection (CCED), a scheme to implement CED in ML systems using a concurrent ML classifier to detect errors. CCED identifies a set of check signals in the main ML system and feeds them to the concurrent ML classifier that is trained to detect errors. The proposed CCED scheme has been implemented and evaluated on two widely used large-scale ML models: Contrastive Language Image Pretraining (CLIP) used for image classification and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) used for natural language applications. The results show that more than 95 percent of the errors are detected when using a simple Random Forest classifier that is order of magnitude simpler than CLIP or BERT. These results illustrate the potential of CCED to implement error detection in large-scale ML models.

Localization of chiral edge states by the non-Hermitian skin effect

Quantum Hall systems host chiral edge states extending along the one-dimensional boundary of any two-dimensional sample. In solid state materials, the edge states serve as perfectly robust transport channels that produce a quantised Hall conductance; due to their chirality, and the topological protection by the Chern number of the bulk bandstructure, they cannot be spatially localized by defects or disorder. Here, we show experimentally that the chiral edge states of a lossy quantum Hall system can be localized. In a gyromagnetic photonic crystal exhibiting the quantum Hall topological phase, an appropriately structured loss configuration imparts the edge states' complex energy spectrum with a feature known as point-gap winding. This intrinsically non-Hermitian topological invariant is distinct from the Chern number invariant of the bulk (which remains intact) and induces mode localization via the "non-Hermitian skin effect". The interplay of the two topological phenomena - the Chern number and point-gap winding - gives rise to a non-Hermitian generalisation of the paradigmatic Chern-type bulk-boundary correspondence principle. Compared to previous realisations of the non-Hermitian skin effect, the skin modes in this system have superior robustness against local defects and disorders.

Unsourced Massive Access-Based Digital Over-the-Air Computation for Efficient Federated Edge Learning

Over-the-air computation (OAC) is a promising technique to achieve fast model aggregation across multiple devices in federated edge learning (FEEL). In addition to the analog schemes, one-bit digital aggregation (OBDA) scheme was proposed to adapt OAC to modern digital wireless systems. However, one-bit quantization in OBDA can result in a serious information loss and slower convergence of FEEL. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes an unsourced massive access (UMA)-based generalized digital OAC (GD-OAC) scheme. Specifically, at the transmitter, all the devices share the same non-orthogonal UMA codebook for uplink transmission. The local model update of each device is quantized based on the same quantization codebook. Then, each device transmits a sequence selected from the UMA codebook based on the quantized elements of its model update. At the receiver, we propose an approximate message passing-based algorithm for efficient UMA detection and model aggregation. Simulation results show that the proposed GD-OAC scheme significantly accelerates the FEEL convergences compared with the state-of-the-art OBDA scheme while using the same uplink communication resources.

Brillouin Klein space and half-turn space in three-dimensional acoustic crystals

The Bloch band theory and Brillouin zone (BZ) that characterize wave behaviors in periodic mediums are two cornerstones of contemporary physics ranging from condensed matter to topological physics. Recent theoretical breakthrough revealed that, under the projective symmetry algebra enforced by artificial gauge fields, the usual two-dimensional (2D) BZ (orientable Brillouin two-torus) can be fundamentally modified to a non-orientable Brillouin Klein bottle with radically distinct topology and novel topological phases. However, the physical consequence of artificial gauge fields on the more general three-dimensional (3D) BZ (orientable Brillouin three-torus) was so far missing. Here, we report the first theoretical discovery and experimental observation of non-orientable Brillouin Klein space and orientable Brillouin half-turn space in a 3D acoustic crystal with artificial gauge fields. We experimentally identify peculiar 3D momentum-space non-symmorphic screw rotation and glide reflection symmetries in the measured band structures. Moreover, we demonstrate a novel 3D Klein bottle insulator featuring a nonzero Z_2 topological invariant and self-collimated topological surface states at two opposite surfaces related by a nonlocal twist, radically distinct from all previous topological insulators. Our discovery not only fundamentally modifies the 3D Bloch band theory and 3D BZ, but also opens the door towards a wealth of previously overlooked momentum-space topologies and unexplored topological physics with gauge symmetry beyond the existing paradigms.

Quasi-Synchronous Random Access for Massive MIMO-Based LEO Satellite Constellations

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation-enabled communication networks are expected to be an important part of many Internet of Things (IoT) deployments due to their unique advantage of providing seamless global coverage. In this paper, we investigate the random access problem in massive multiple-input multiple-output-based LEO satellite systems, where the multi-satellite cooperative processing mechanism is considered. Specifically, at edge satellite nodes, we conceive a training sequence padded multi-carrier system to overcome the issue of imperfect synchronization, where the training sequence is utilized to detect the devices' activity and estimate their channels. Considering the inherent sparsity of terrestrial-satellite links and the sporadic traffic feature of IoT terminals, we utilize the orthogonal approximate message passing-multiple measurement vector algorithm to estimate the delay coefficients and user terminal activity. To further utilize the structure of the receive array, a two-dimensional estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique is performed for enhancing channel estimation. Finally, at the central server node, we propose a majority voting scheme to enhance activity detection by aggregating backhaul information from multiple satellites. Moreover, multi-satellite cooperative linear data detection and multi-satellite cooperative Bayesian dequantization data detection are proposed to cope with perfect and quantized backhaul, respectively. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed schemes in terms of channel estimation, activity detection, and data detection for quasi-synchronous random access in satellite systems.

Massive Access in Extra Large-Scale MIMO with Mixed-ADC over Near Field Channels

Massive connectivity for extra large-scale multi-input multi-output (XL-MIMO) systems is a challenging issue due to the near-field access channels and the prohibitive cost. In this paper, we propose an uplink grant-free massive access scheme for XL-MIMO systems, in which a mixed-analog-to-digital converters (ADC) architecture is adopted to strike the right balance between access performance and power consumption. By exploiting the spatial-domain structured sparsity and the piecewise angular-domain cluster sparsity of massive access channels, a compressive sensing (CS)-based two-stage orthogonal approximate message passing algorithm is proposed to efficiently solve the joint activity detection and channel estimation problem. Particularly, high-precision quantized measurements are leveraged to perform accurate hyper-parameter estimation, thereby facilitating the activity detection. Moreover, we adopt a subarray-wise estimation strategy to overcome the severe angular-domain energy dispersion problem which is caused by the near-field effect in XL-MIMO channels. Simulation results verify the superiority of our proposed algorithm over state-of-the-art CS algorithms for massive access based on XL-MIMO with mixed-ADC architectures.

Next-Generation URLLC with Massive Devices: A Unified Semi-Blind Detection Framework for Sourced and Unsourced Random Access

This paper proposes a unified semi-blind detection framework for sourced and unsourced random access (RA), which enables next-generation ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) with massive devices. Specifically, the active devices transmit their uplink access signals in a grant-free manner to realize ultra-low access latency. Meanwhile, the base station aims to achieve ultra-reliable data detection under severe inter-device interference without exploiting explicit channel state information (CSI). We first propose an efficient transmitter design, where a small amount of reference information (RI) is embedded in the access signal to resolve the inherent ambiguities incurred by the unknown CSI. At the receiver, we further develop a successive interference cancellation-based semi-blind detection scheme, where a bilinear generalized approximate message passing algorithm is utilized for joint channel and signal estimation (JCSE), while the embedded RI is exploited for ambiguity elimination. Particularly, a rank selection approach and a RI-aided initialization strategy are incorporated to reduce the algorithmic computational complexity and to enhance the JCSE reliability, respectively. Besides, four enabling techniques are integrated to satisfy the stringent latency and reliability requirements of massive URLLC. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed semi-blind detection framework offers a better scalability-latency-reliability tradeoff than the state-of-the-art detection schemes dedicated to sourced or unsourced RA.

Reconfigurable Massive MIMO: Harnessing the Power of the Electromagnetic Domain for Enhanced Information Transfer

The capacity of commercial massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems is constrained by the limited array aperture at the base station, and cannot meet the ever-increasing traffic demands of wireless networks. Given the array aperture, holographic MIMO with infinitesimal antenna spacing can maximize the capacity, but is physically unrealizable. As a promising alternative, reconfigurable mMIMO is proposed to harness the unexploited power of the electromagnetic (EM) domain for enhanced information transfer. Specifically, the reconfigurable pixel antenna technology provides each antenna with an adjustable EM radiation (EMR) pattern, introducing extra degrees of freedom for information transfer in the EM domain. In this article, we present the concept and benefits of availing the EMR domain for mMIMO transmission. Moreover, we propose a viable architecture for reconfigurable mMIMO systems, and the associated system model and downlink precoding are also discussed. In particular, a three-level precoding scheme is proposed, and simulation results verify its considerable spectral and energy efficiency advantages compared to traditional mMIMO systems. Finally, we further discuss the challenges, insights, and prospects of deploying reconfigurable mMIMO, along with the associated hardware, algorithms, and fundamental theory.

Realization of a quadrupole topological insulator phase in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal

The field of topological photonics was initiated with the realization of a Chern insulator phase in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal (PhC) with broken time-reversal symmetry (T), hosting chiral edge states that are topologically protected propagating modes. Recent advances in higher-order band topology have discovered another type of topological state, as manifested by those modes localized at the corners of a sample, which are known as corner states. Here we report the realization of a quadrupole higher-order topological insulator phase in a gyromagnetic PhC, induced by a topological phase transition from the previously demonstrated Chern insulator phase. The evolution of the boundary modes from propagating chiral edge states to localized corner states has been characterized by microwave measurements. We also demonstrate topological bound states in the continuum, when the gyromagnetic PhC is magnetically tuned. These results extend the quadrupole topological insulator phase into T-broken systems, and integrate topologically protected propagating and localized modes in the same platform.

Multiple-Antenna Aided Aeronautical Communications in Air-Ground Integrated Networks: Channel Estimation, Reliable Transmission, and Multiple Access

To provide seamless coverage during all flight phases, aeronautical communications systems (ACS) have to integrate space-based, air-based, as well as ground-based platforms to formulate aviation-oriented space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs). In continental areas, L-band aeronautical broadband communications (ABC) are gaining popularity for supporting air traffic management (ATM) modernization. However, L-band ABC faces the challenges of spectrum congestion and severe interference due to the legacy systems. To circumvent these, we propose a novel multiple-antenna aided L-band ABC paradigm to tackle the key issues of reliable and high-rate air-to-ground (A2G) transmissions. Specifically, we first introduce the development roadmap of the ABC. Furthermore, we discuss the peculiarities of the L-band ABC propagation environment and the distinctive challenges of the associated multiple-antenna techniques. To overcome these challenges, we propose an advanced multiple-antenna assisted L-band ABC paradigm from the perspective of channel estimation, reliable transmission, and multiple access. Finally, we shed light on the compelling research directions of the aviation component of SAGINs.

Topological metasurface: From passive toward active and beyond

Metasurfaces are subwavelength structured thin films consisting of arrays of units that allow the controls of polarization, phase and amplitude of light over a subwavelength thickness. The recent developments in topological photonics have greatly broadened the horizon in designing the metasurfaces for novel functional applications. In this review, we summarize recent progress in the research field of topological metasurfaces, firstly from the perspectives of passive and active in the classical regime, and then in the quantum regime. More specifically, we begin by examining the passive topological phenomena in two-dimensional photonic systems, including both time-reversal broken systems and time-reversal preserved systems. Subsequently, we move to discuss the cutting-edge studies of the active topological metasurfaces, including nonlinear topological metasurfaces and reconfigurable topological metasurfaces. After overviewing the topological metasurfaces in the classical regime, we show how the topological metasurfaces could provide a new platform for quantum information and quantum many-body physics. Finally, we conclude and describe some challenges and future directions of this fast-evolving field.

Grant-Free NOMA-OTFS Paradigm: Enabling Efficient Ubiquitous Access for LEO Satellite Internet-of-Things

With the blooming of Internet-of-Things (IoT), we are witnessing an explosion in the number of IoT terminals, triggering an unprecedented demand for ubiquitous wireless access globally. In this context, the emerging low-Earth-orbit satellites (LEO-SATs) have been regarded as a promising enabler to complement terrestrial wireless networks in providing ubiquitous connectivity and bridging the ever-growing digital divide in the expected next-generation wireless communications. Nevertheless, the harsh conditions posed by LEO-SATs have imposed significant challenges to the current multiple access (MA) schemes and led to an emerging paradigm shift in system design. In this article, we first provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art MA schemes and investigate their limitations in the context of LEO-SATs. To this end, we propose a novel next generation MA (NGMA), which amalgamates the grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) mechanism and the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) waveform, for simplifying the connection procedure with reduced access latency and enhanced Doppler-robustness. Critical open challenging issues and future directions are finally presented for further technical development.

Deep Learning-Based Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Tera-Hertz Massive MIMO

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can significantly enhance the service coverage of Tera-Hertz massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. However, obtaining accurate high-dimensional channel state information (CSI) with limited pilot and feedback signaling overhead is challenging, severely degrading the performance of conventional spatial division multiple access. To improve the robustness against CSI imperfection, this paper proposes a deep learning (DL)-based rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) scheme for RIS-aided Tera-Hertz multi-user MIMO systems. Specifically, we first propose a hybrid data-model driven DL-based RSMA precoding scheme, including the passive precoding at the RIS as well as the analog active precoding and the RSMA digital active precoding at the base station (BS). To realize the passive precoding at the RIS, we propose a Transformer-based data-driven RIS reflecting network (RRN). As for the analog active precoding at the BS, we propose a match-filter based analog precoding scheme considering that the BS and RIS adopt the LoS-MIMO antenna array architecture. As for the RSMA digital active precoding at the BS, we propose a low-complexity approximate weighted minimum mean square error (AWMMSE) digital precoding scheme. Furthermore, for better precoding performance as well as lower computational complexity, a model-driven deep unfolding active precoding network (DFAPN) is also designed by combining the proposed AWMMSE scheme with DL. Then, to acquire accurate CSI at the BS for the investigated RSMA precoding scheme to achieve higher spectral efficiency, we propose a CSI acquisition network (CAN) with low pilot and feedback signaling overhead, where the downlink pilot transmission, CSI feedback at the user equipments (UEs), and CSI reconstruction at the BS are modeled as an end-to-end neural network based on Transformer.
