Transformer-Empowered 6G Intelligent Networks: From Massive MIMO Processing to Semantic Communication

It is anticipated that 6G wireless networks will accelerate the convergence of the physical and cyber worlds and enable a paradigm-shift in the way we deploy and exploit communication networks. Machine learning, in particular deep learning (DL), is expected to be one of the key technological enablers of 6G by offering a new paradigm for the design and optimization of networks with a high level of intelligence. In this article, we introduce an emerging DL architecture, known as the transformer, and discuss its potential impact on 6G network design. We first discuss the differences between the transformer and classical DL architectures, and emphasize the transformer's self-attention mechanism and strong representation capabilities, which make it particularly appealing for tackling various challenges in wireless network design. Specifically, we propose transformer-based solutions for various massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and semantic communication problems, and show their superiority compared to other architectures. Finally, we discuss key challenges and open issues in transformer-based solutions, and identify future research directions for their deployment in intelligent 6G networks.

Active Terminal Identification, Channel Estimation, and Signal Detection for Grant-Free NOMA-OTFS in LEO Satellite Internet-of-Things

This paper investigates the massive connectivity of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) for seamless global coverage. We propose to integrate the grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) paradigm with the emerging orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation to accommodate the massive IoT access, and mitigate the long round-trip latency and severe Doppler effect of terrestrial-satellite links (TSLs). On this basis, we put forward a two-stage successive active terminal identification (ATI) and channel estimation (CE) scheme as well as a low-complexity multi-user signal detection (SD) method. Specifically, at the first stage, the proposed training sequence aided OTFS (TS-OTFS) data frame structure facilitates the joint ATI and coarse CE, whereby both the traffic sparsity of terrestrial IoT terminals and the sparse channel impulse response are leveraged for enhanced performance. Moreover, based on the single Doppler shift property for each TSL and sparsity of delay-Doppler domain channel, we develop a parametric approach to further refine the CE performance. Finally, a least square based parallel time domain SD method is developed to detect the OTFS signals with relatively low complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods over the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of ATI, CE, and SD performance confronted with the long round-trip latency and severe Doppler effect.

Lattice-aligned gallium oxynitride nanolayer for GaN surface enhancement and function extension

Gallium nitride (GaN), as a promising alternative semiconductor to silicon, is of well-established use in photoelectronic and electronic technology. However, the vulnerable GaN surface has been a critical restriction that hinders the development of GaN-based devices, especially regarding device stability and reliability. Here, we overcome this challenge by converting the GaN surface into a gallium oxynitride (GaON) epitaxial nanolayer through an in-situ two-step "oxidation-reconfiguration" process. The oxygen plasma treatment overcomes the chemical inertness of the GaN surface, and the sequential thermal annealing manipulates the kinetic-thermodynamic reaction pathways to create a metastable GaON nanolayer with wurtzite lattice. This GaN-derived GaON nanolayer is a tailored structure for surface reinforcement and possesses several advantages, including wide bandgap, high thermodynamic stability, and large valence band offset with GaN substrate. These enhanced physical properties can be further leveraged to enable GaN-based applications in new scenarios, such as complementary logic integrated circuits, photoelectrochemical water splitting, and ultraviolet photoelectric conversion, making GaON a versatile functionality extender.

Joint Activity Detection and Channel Estimation for Massive IoT Access Based on Millimeter-Wave/Terahertz Multi-Panel Massive MIMO

The multi-panel array, as a state-of-the-art antenna-in-package technology, is very suitable for millimeter-wave (mmWave)/terahertz (THz) systems, due to its low-cost deployment and scalable configuration. But in the context of nonuniform array structures it leads to intractable signal processing. Based on such an array structure at the base station, this paper investigates a joint active user detection (AUD) and channel estimation (CE) scheme based on compressive sensing (CS) for application to the massive Internet of Things (IoT). Specifically, by exploiting the structured sparsity of mmWave/THz massive IoT access channels, we firstly formulate the multi-panel massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO)-based joint AUD and CE problem as a multiple measurement vector (MMV)-CS problem. Then, we harness the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm to learn the prior parameters (i.e., the noise variance and the sparsity ratio) and an orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP)-EM-MMV algorithm is developed to solve this problem. Our simulation results verify the improved AUD and CE performance of the proposed scheme compared to conventional CS-based algorithms.

Integrated Sensing and Communication with mmWave Massive MIMO: A Compressed Sampling Perspective

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has opened up numerous game-changing opportunities for realizing future wireless systems. In this paper, we propose an ISAC processing framework relying on millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Specifically, we provide a compressed sampling (CS) perspective to facilitate ISAC processing, which can not only recover the high-dimensional channel state information or/and radar imaging information, but also significantly reduce pilot overhead. First, an energy-efficient widely spaced array (WSA) architecture is tailored for the radar receiver, which enhances the angular resolution of radar sensing at the cost of angular ambiguity. Then, we propose an ISAC frame structure for time-varying ISAC systems considering different timescales. The pilot waveforms are judiciously designed by taking into account both CS theories and hardware constraints induced by hybrid beamforming (HBF) architecture. Next, we design the dedicated dictionary for WSA that serves as a building block for formulating the ISAC processing as sparse signal recovery problems. The orthogonal matching pursuit with support refinement (OMP-SR) algorithm is proposed to effectively solve the problems in the existence of the angular ambiguity. We also provide a framework for estimating the Doppler frequencies during payload data transmission to guarantee communication performances. Simulation results demonstrate the good performances of both communications and radar sensing under the proposed ISAC framework.

Data-Driven Deep Learning Based Hybrid Beamforming for Aerial Massive MIMO-OFDM Systems with Implicit CSI

In an aerial hybrid massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, how to design a spectral-efficient broadband multi-user hybrid beamforming with a limited pilot and feedback overhead is challenging. To this end, by modeling the key transmission modules as an end-to-end (E2E) neural network, this paper proposes a data-driven deep learning (DL)-based unified hybrid beamforming framework for both the time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD) systems with implicit channel state information (CSI). For TDD systems, the proposed DL-based approach jointly models the uplink pilot combining and downlink hybrid beamforming modules as an E2E neural network. While for FDD systems, we jointly model the downlink pilot transmission, uplink CSI feedback, and downlink hybrid beamforming modules as an E2E neural network. Different from conventional approaches separately processing different modules, the proposed solution simultaneously optimizes all modules with the sum rate as the optimization object. Therefore, by perceiving the inherent property of air-to-ground massive MIMO-OFDM channel samples, the DL-based E2E neural network can establish the mapping function from the channel to the beamformer, so that the explicit channel reconstruction can be avoided with reduced pilot and feedback overhead. Besides, practical low-resolution phase shifters (PSs) introduce the quantization constraint, leading to the intractable gradient backpropagation when training the neural network. To mitigate the performance loss caused by the phase quantization error, we adopt the transfer learning strategy to further fine-tune the E2E neural network based on a pre-trained network that assumes the ideal infinite-resolution PSs. Numerical results show that our DL-based schemes have considerable advantages over state-of-the-art schemes.

Demonstration of broadband topological slow light

Slow-light devices are able to significantly enhance light-matter interaction due to the reduced group velocity of light, but a very low group velocity is usually achieved in a narrow bandwidth, accompanied by extreme sensitivity to imperfections that causes increased disorder-induced attenuation. Recent theories have suggested an ideal solution to this problem - unidirectional chiral photonic states, previously discovered in structures known as photonic topological insulators, not only resist backscattering from imperfections but can also be slowed down in the entire topological bandgap with multiple windings in the Brillouin zone. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of broadband topological slow light in a photonic topological insulator. When coupled with periodic resonators that form flat bands, the chiral photonic states can wind many times around the Brillouin zone, achieving an ultra-low group velocity in the entire topological bandgap. This demonstration extends the scope of topological photonics into slow light engineering and opens a unique avenue in the dispersion manipulation of chiral photonic states.

Spinful topological phases in acoustic crystals with projective PT symmetry

For the classification of topological phases of matter, an important consideration is whether a system is spinless or spinful, as these two classes have distinct symmetry algebra that gives rise to fundamentally different topological phases. However, only recently has it been realized theoretically that in the presence of gauge symmetry, the algebraic structure of symmetries can be projectively represented, which possibly enables the switch between spinless and spinful topological phases. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of this idea by realizing spinful topological phases in "spinless" acoustic crystals with projective space-time inversion symmetry. In particular, we realize a DIII-class one-dimensional topologically gapped phase characterized by a 2Z winding number, which features Kramers degenerate bands and Kramers pair of topological boundary modes. Our work thus overcomes a fundamental constraint on topological phases by spin classes.

Monolayer and bilayer PtCl$_3$: Energetics, magnetism, and band topology

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials hosting nontrivial topological states are interesting for fundamental research as well as practical applications. Recently, the topological state of 2D Weyl half-semimetal (WHS) was proposed, which hosts fully spin polarized Weyl points robust against spin-orbit coupling in a 2D ferromagnetic system, and single-layer PtCl$_3$ was predicted as a platform for realizing this state. Here, we perform an extensive search of 2D PtCl$_3$ structures, by using the particle swarm optimization technique and density functional theory calculation. We show that the desired PtCl$_3$ phase corresponds to the most stable one at its stoichiometry. The 2D structure also possesses good thermal stability up to 600 K. We suggest SnS$_2$ as a substrate for the growth of 2D PtCl$_3$, which has excellent lattice matching and preserves the WHS state in PtCl$_3$. We find that uniaxial strains along the zigzag direction maintain the WHS state, whereas small strains along the armchair direction drives a topological phase transition from the WHS to a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator phase. Furthermore, we study bilayer PtCl$_3$ and show that the stacking configuration has strong impact on the magnetism and the electronic band structure. Particularly, the $AA'$ stacked bilayer PtCl$_3$ realizes an interesting topological state -- the 2D antiferromagnetic mirror Chern insulator, which has a pair of topological gapless edge bands. Our work provides guidance for the experimental realization of 2D PtCl$_3$ and will facilitate the study of 2D magnetic topological states, including WHS, QAH insulator, and magnetic mirror Chern insulator states.

The Road to Industry 4.0 and Beyond: A Communications-, Information-, and Operation Technology Collaboration Perspective

The fourth industrial revolution, i.e., Industry 4.0, is evolving all around the globe. In this article, we introduce the landscape of Industry 4.0 and beyond empowered by the seamless collaboration of communication technology (CT), information technology (IT), and operation technology (OT), i.e., CIOT collaboration. Specifically, CIOT collaboration is regarded as a main improvement of Industry 4.0 compared to the previous industrial revolutions. We commence by reviewing the previous three industrial revolutions and we argue that the key feature of Industry 4.0 is the CIOT collaboration. More particularly, CT domain supports ubiquitous connectivity of the industrial elements and further bridges the physical world and the cyber world, which is a pivotal prerequisite. Then, we present the potential impacts of CIOT collaboration on typical industrial use cases with the objective of creating a more intelligent and human-friendly industry. Furthermore, the technical challenges of paving the way for the CIOT collaboration with an emphasis on the CT domain are discussed. Finally, we shed light on a roadmap for Industry 4.0 and beyond. The salient steps to be taken in the future CIOT collaboration are highlighted, which may be expected to expedite the paradigm shift towards the next industrial revolution.

Observation of Dirac hierarchy in three-dimensional acoustic topological insulators

Dirac cones (DCs) play a pivotal role in various unique phenomena ranging from massless electrons in graphene to robust surface states in topological insulators (TIs). Recent studies have theoretically revealed a full Dirac hierarchy comprising an eightfold bulk DC, a fourfold surface DC, and a twofold hinge DC, associated with a hierarchy of topological phases including first-order to third-order three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators, using the same 3D base lattice. Here, we report the first experimental observation of the Dirac hierarchy in 3D acoustic TIs. Using acoustic measurements, we unambiguously reveal that lifting of multifold DCs in each hierarchy can induce two-dimensional (2D) topological surface states with a fourfold DC in a first-order 3D TI, one-dimensional (1D) topological hinge states with a twofold DC in a second-order 3D TI, and zero-dimensional (0D) topological corner states in a third-order 3D TI. Our work not only expands the fundamental research scope of Dirac physics, but also opens up a new route for multidimensional robust wave manipulation.

Fault-Tolerant Deep Learning: A Hierarchical Perspective

With the rapid advancements of deep learning in the past decade, it can be foreseen that deep learning will be continuously deployed in more and more safety-critical applications such as autonomous driving and robotics. In this context, reliability turns out to be critical to the deployment of deep learning in these applications and gradually becomes a first-class citizen among the major design metrics like performance and energy efficiency. Nevertheless, the back-box deep learning models combined with the diverse underlying hardware faults make resilient deep learning extremely challenging. In this special session, we conduct a comprehensive survey of fault-tolerant deep learning design approaches with a hierarchical perspective and investigate these approaches from model layer, architecture layer, circuit layer, and cross layer respectively.

Discovery of a maximally charged Weyl point

The hypothetical Weyl particles in high-energy physics have been discovered in three-dimensional crystals as collective quasiparticle excitations near two-fold degenerate Weyl points. Such momentum-space Weyl particles carry quantized chiral charges, which can be measured by counting the number of Fermi arcs emanating from the corresponding Weyl points. It is known that merging unit-charged Weyl particles can create new ones with more charges. However, only very recently has it been realised that there is an upper limit - the maximal charge number that a two-fold Weyl point can host is four - achievable only in crystals without spin-orbit coupling. Here, we report the experimental realisation of such a maximally charged Weyl point in a three-dimensional photonic crystal. The four charges support quadruple-helicoid Fermi arcs, forming an unprecedented topology of two non-contractible loops in the surface Brillouin zone. The helicoid Fermi arcs also exhibit the long-pursued type-II van Hove singularities that can reside at arbitrary momenta. This discovery reveals a type of maximally charged Weyl particles beyond conventional topological particles in crystals.

Joint Activity and Blind Information Detection for UAV-Assisted Massive IoT Access

Grant-free non-coherent index-modulation (NC-IM) has been recently considered as an efficient massive access scheme for enabling cost- and energy-limited Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices that transmit small data packets. This paper investigates the grant-free NC-IM scheme combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for applicant to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based massive IoT access. Specifically, each device is assigned a unique non-orthogonal signature sequence codebook. Each active device transmits one of its signature sequences in the given time-frequency resources, by modulating the information in the index of the transmitted signature sequence. For small-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) deployed at the UAV-based aerial base station (BS), by jointly exploiting the space-time-frequency domain device activity, we propose a computationally efficient space-time-frequency joint activity and blind information detection (JABID) algorithm with significantly improved detection performance. Furthermore, for large-scale MIMO deployed at the aerial BS, by leveraging the sparsity of the virtual angular-domain channels, we propose an angular-domain based JABID algorithm for improving the system performance with reduced access latency. In addition, for the case of high mobility IoT devices and/or UAVs, we introduce a time-frequency spread transmission (TFST) strategy for the proposed JABID algorithms to combat doubly-selective fading channels. Finally, extensive simulation results are illustrated to verify the superiority of the proposed algorithms and the TFST strategy over known state-of-the-art algorithms.

Monolayer RhB4: half-auxeticity and almost ideal spin-orbit Dirac point semimetal

Structural-property relationship, the connection between materials' structures and their properties, is central to the materials research. Especially at reduced dimensions, novel structural motifs often generate unique physical properties.Motivated by a recent work reporting a novel half auxetic effect in monolayer PdB4 with a hypercoordinated structure, here, we extensively explore similar 2D transition metal boride structures MB4 with M covering 3d and 4d elements. Our investigation screens out one stable candidate, the monolayer RhB4. We find that monolayer RhB4 also shows half auxeticity, i.e., the material always expands in a lateral in-plane direction in response to an applied strain in the other direction, regardless of whether the strain is positive or negative. We show that this special mechanical character is intimately tied to the hypercoordinated structure with the M\c{opyright}B8 structural motif. Furthermore, regarding electronic properties, monolayer RhB4 is found to be the first example of an almost ideal 2D spin-orbit Dirac point semimetal. The low-energy band structure is clean, with a pair of fourfold degenerate Dirac points robust under spin-orbit coupling located close to the Fermi level. These Dirac points are enforced by the nonsymmorphic space group symmetry which is also determined by the lattice structure. Our work deepens the fundamental understanding of structural-property relationship in reduced dimensions. The half auxeticity and the spin-orbit Dirac points will make monolayer RhB4 a promising platform for nanomechanics and nanoelectronics applications.

Observation of topologically enabled complete polarization conversion

Exploiting topological ideas has been a major theme in modern photonics, which provides unprecedented opportunities to design photonic devices with robustness against defects and flaws. While most previous works in topological photonics have focused on band theory, recent theoretical advances extend the topological concepts to the analysis of scattering matrices and suggest a topological route to complete polarization conversion (CPC), a unique photonic phenomenon without an electronic counterpart. Here, we report on the experimental observation of the topological effect in reflection matrices of a photonic crystal slab, enabling CPC between two linear polarizations over a wide range of frequencies. Using angle-resolved reflection measurements, we observe CPC occurring at vortex singularities of reflection coefficients in momentum space, verifying the topological nature of CPC. In addition, the topological effect also guarantees the spin-preserved reflection of a circularly polarized wave. Remarkably, we experimentally establish a connection between two seemingly unrelated topological phenomena--CPC and bound states in the continuum (BICs): BICs lie on the critical coupling curves that define the condition for CPC. Our work paves the way to exploring the topological properties in scattering matrices for controlling light polarization and spin and creating robust photonic devices.

Observation of roton-like dispersion relations in acoustic metamaterials

Roton dispersion relations, displaying a pronounced "roton" minimum at finite momentum, were firstly predicted by Landau and have been extensively explored in correlated quantum systems at low temperatures. Recently, the roton-like dispersion relations were theoretically extended to classical acoustics, which, however, have remained elusive in reality. Here, we report the experimental observation of roton-like dispersions in acoustic metamaterials with beyond-nearest-neighbour interactions at ambient temperatures. The resulting metamaterial supports multiple coexisting modes with different wavevectors and group velocities at the same frequency and broadband backward waves, analogous to the "return flow" termed by Feynman in the context of rotons. Moreover, by increasing the order of long-range interaction, we observe multiple rotons on a single dispersion band, which have never appeared in Landau's prediction or any other condensed matter study. The realization of roton-like dispersions in metamaterials could pave the way to explore novel physics and applications on quantum-inspired phenomena in classical systems.

Compressive Sensing Based Joint Activity and Data Detection for Grant-Free Massive IoT Access

Massive machine-type communications (mMTC) are poised to provide ubiquitous connectivity for billions of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. However, the required low-latency massive access necessitates a paradigm shift in the design of random access schemes, which invokes a need of efficient joint activity and data detection (JADD) algorithms. By exploiting the feature of sporadic traffic in massive access, a beacon-aided slotted grant-free massive access solution is proposed. Specifically, we spread the uplink access signals in multiple subcarriers with pre-equalization processing and formulate the JADD as a multiple measurement vector (MMV) compressive sensing problem. Moreover, to leverage the structured sparsity of uplink massive access signals among multiple time slots, we develop two computationally efficient detection algorithms, which are termed as orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP)-MMV algorithm with simplified structure learning (SSL) and accurate structure learning (ASL). To achieve accurate detection, the expectation maximization algorithm is exploited for learning the sparsity ratio and the noise variance. To further improve the detection performance, channel coding is applied and successive interference cancellation (SIC)-based OAMP-MMV-SSL and OAMP-MMV-ASL algorithms are developed, where the likelihood ratio obtained in the soft-decision can be exploited for refining the activity identification. Finally, the state evolution of the proposed OAMP-MMV-SSL and OAMP-MMV-ASL algorithms is derived to predict the performance theoretically. Simulation results verify that the proposed solutions outperform various state-of-the-art baseline schemes, enabling low-latency random access and high-reliable massive IoT connectivity with overloading.
