Photonic dissipation control for Kerr soliton generation in strongly Raman-active media

Microcavity solitons enable miniaturized coherent frequency comb sources. However, the formation of microcavity solitons can be disrupted by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), particularly in the emerging crystalline microcomb materials with high Raman gain. Here, we propose and implement dissipation control---tailoring the energy dissipation of selected cavity modes---to purposely raise/lower the threshold of Raman lasing in a strongly Raman-active lithium niobate microring resonator, and realize on-demand soliton mode-locking or Raman lasing. Numerical simulations are carried out to confirm our analyses and agree well with experiment results. Our work demonstrates an effective approach to address strong SRS for microcavity soliton generation.

Electron confinement by laser-driven azimuthal magnetic fields during direct laser acceleration

A laser-driven azimuthal plasma magnetic field is known to facilitate electron energy gain from the irradiating laser pulse. The enhancement is due to changes in the orientation between the laser electric field and electron velocity caused by magnetic field deflections. Transverse electron confinement is critical for realizing this concept experimentally. We find that the phase velocity of the laser pulse has a profound impact on the transverse size of electron trajectories. The transverse size remains constant below a threshold energy that depends on the degree of the superluminosity and it increases with the electron energy above the threshold. This increase can cause electron losses in tightly focused laser pulses. We show using 3D particle-in-cell simulations that the electron energy gain can be significantly increased by increasing laser power at fixed intensity due to the increased electron confinement. This finding makes a strong case for designing experiments at multi-PW laser facilities.

Pockels Soliton Microcomb

Kerr soliton microcombs have recently emerged as a prominent topic in integrated photonics and enabled new horizons for optical frequency metrology. Kerr soliton microcombs, as its name suggests, are based on the high-order cubic optical nonlinearity. It is desirable to exploit quadratic photonic materials, namely Pockels materials, for soliton generation and on-chip implementation of 1f-2f comb self-referencing. Such quadratically-driven solitons have been theoretically proposed, but have not yet been observed in a nanophotonic platform despite of recent progresses in quadratic comb generation in free-space and crystalline resonators. Here we report photonic chip-based Pockels microcomb solitons driven by three-wave mixing in an aluminum nitride microring resonator. In contrast to typical Kerr solitons, our Pockels soliton features unity soliton generation fidelity, two-by-two annihilation of multi-soliton states, favorable tuning dynamics, and high pump-to-soliton conversion efficiency.

Tunable telecom to mid-infrared optical parametric oscillation via microring-based $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinearities

Optical parametric oscillation (OPO) with far-shifted frequency sidebands has attracted significant interests in precision spectroscopy and quantum information processing. Microresonator based OPO sources hold the advantages of miniaturized footprint and versatile dispersion engineering. Here we demonstrate large-frequency-shifted $χ^{(3)}$-based OPO from crystalline aluminum nitride microrings pumped at $\sim$2 $μ$m in the normal dispersion regime. OPO in the telecom and mid-infrared bands with a frequency separation of 65.5 THz is achieved. The OPO frequency can be agilely tuned in the ranges of 10, 1 and 0.1 THz respectively by tailoring the microring dimensions, shifting the pump wavelength, and controlling the chip temperature. At high intracavity pump powers, the OPO sidebands further evolve into localized frequency comb lines. Such telecom to mid-infrared OPO with flexible wavelength tunability will lead to enhanced chip-scale light sources.

Beyond 100 THz-spanning ultraviolet frequency combs in a non-centrosymmetric crystalline waveguide

Ultraviolet frequency combs enable applications ranging from precision spectroscopy to atomic clocks by addressing the electronic transitions of atoms and molecules. Access to ultraviolet light via integrated nonlinear optics is usually hampered by the strong material dispersion and large waveguide attention in the ultraviolet region. Here we demonstrate a simple route to chip-scale ultraviolet comb generators, simultaneously showing a gap-free frequency span of ~128 terahertz and supercontinuum sourced by an ultrafast fiber laser. The simultaneous cubic and quadratic nonlinear processes are implemented in single-crystalline aluminum nitride thin films, where a chirp-modulated taper waveguide is patterned to ensure a broad phase matching. The heterodyne beatnote characterization suggests that both the near-visible and ultraviolet supercontinuum combs maintain a high degree of coherence. Our approach is also adaptable to other non-centrosymmetric photonic platforms for ultrafast nonlinear optics with scalable bandwidth.

Periodically poled thin film lithium niobate microring resonators with a second-harmonic generation efficiency of 250,000%/W

Lithium niobate (LN), dubbed by many as the silicon of photonics, has recently risen to the forefront of chip-scale nonlinear optics research since its demonstration as an ultralow-loss integrated photonics platform. Due to its significant quadratic nonlinearity ($χ^{(2)}$), LN inspires many important applications such as second-harmonic generation (SHG), spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and optical parametric oscillation. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency SHG in dual-resonant, periodically poled z-cut LN microrings, where quasi-phase matching is realized by field-assisted domain engineering. Meanwhile, dual-band operation is accessed by optimizing the coupling conditions in fundamental and second-harmonic bands via a single pulley waveguide. As a result, when pumping a periodically poled LN microring in the low power regime at around 1617nm, an on-chip SHG efficiency of 250,000%/W is achieved, a state-of-the-art value reported among current integrated photonics platforms. An absolute conversion efficiency of 15% is recorded with a low pump power of 115$μ$W in the waveguide. Such periodically poled LN microrings also present a versatile platform for other cavity-enhanced quasi-phase matched $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear optical processes.

EdgeCNN: Convolutional Neural Network Classification Model with small inputs for Edge Computing

With the development of Internet of Things (IoT), data is increasingly appearing on the edge of the network. Processing tasks on the edge of the network can effectively solve the problems of personal privacy leaks and server overload. As a result, it has attracted a great deal of attention and made substantial progress. This progress includes efficient convolutional neural network (CNN) models such as MobileNet and ShuffleNet. However, all of these networks appear as a common network model and they usually need to identify multiple targets when applied. So the size of the input is very large. In some specific cases, only the target needs to be classified. Therefore, a small input network can be designed to reduce computation. In addition, other efficient neural network models are primarily designed for mobile phones. Mobile phones have faster memory access, which allows them to use group convolution. In particular, this paper finds that the recently widely used group convolution is not suitable for devices with very slow memory access. Therefore, the EdgeCNN of this paper is designed for edge computing devices with low memory access speed and low computing resources. EdgeCNN has been run successfully on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ at a speed of 1.37 frames per second. The accuracy of facial expression classification for the FER-2013 and RAF-DB datasets outperforms other proposed networks that are compatible with the Raspberry Pi 3B+. The implementation of EdgeCNN is available at https://github.com/yangshunzhi1994/EdgeCNN

17,000 %/W Second Harmonic Conversion Efficiency in Single Crystalline Aluminum Nitride Microresonators

High quality factor optical microcavities have been employed in a variety of material systems to enhance nonlinear optical interactions. While single-crystalline aluminum nitride microresonators have recently emerged as a low loss platform for integrated nonlinear optics such as four wave mixing and Raman lasing, few studies have investigated this material for second-harmonic generation. In this Letter, we demonstrate an optimized fabrication of dually-resonant phase-matched ring resonators from epitaxial aluminum nitride thin films. An unprecendented second-harmonic generation efficiency of 17,000%/W is obtained in the low power regime and pump depletion is observed at a relatively low input power of 3.5 mW. This poses epitaxial aluminum nitride as the highest efficiency second-harmonic generator among current integrated platforms.

Ultra-high-Q UV microring resonators based on single-crystalline AlN platform

Development of low-loss photonic components in the ultraviolet (UV) band will open new prospects for classical and quantum optics. Compared with other integrated platforms, aluminum nitride (AlN) is particularly attractive as it features an enormous bandgap of ~6.2 eV and intrinsic chi(2) and chi(3) susceptibilities. In this work, we demonstrate a record quality factor of 2.1 x 105 (optical loss ~ 8 dB/cm) at 390 nm based on single-crystalline AlN microrings. The low-loss AlN UV waveguide represents a significant milestone toward UV photonic integrated circuits as it features full compatibility for future incorporation of AlGaN-based UV emitters and receivers. On-chip UV spectroscopy, nonlinear optics and quantum information processing can also be envisioned.

Superconducting cavity electro-optics: a platform for coherent photon conversion between superconducting and photonic circuits

Leveraging the quantum information processing ability of superconducting circuits and long-distance distribution ability of optical photons promises the realization of complex and large-scale quantum networks. In such a scheme, a coherent and efficient quantum transducer between superconducting and photonic circuits is critical. However, such quantum transducer is still challenging since the use of intermediate excitations in current schemes introduces extra noise and limits bandwidth. Here we realize direct and coherent transduction between superconducting and photonic circuits based on triple-resonance electro-optics principle, with integrated devices incorporating both superconducting and optical cavities on the same chip. Electromagnetically induced transparency is observed, indicating the coherent interaction between microwave and optical photons. Internal conversion efficiency of 25.9\pm0.3\% has been achieved, with 2.05\pm0.04\% total efficiency. Superconducting cavity electro-optics offers broad transduction bandwidth and high scalability, and represents a significant step towards the integrated hybrid quantum circuits and distributed quantum computation.

Matter creation via gamma-gamma collider driving by 10 PW laser pulses

The nature of matter creation is one of the most basic processes in the universe. According to the quantum electrodynamics theory, matters can be created from pure light through the Breit Wheeler (BW) process. The multi-photon BW process has been demonstrated in 1997 at the SLAC, yet the two-photon BW process has never been observed in the laboratory. Interest has been aroused to investigate this process with lasers due to the developments of the laser technology and the laser based electron accelerators. The laser based proposals may be achieved with NIF and ELI, provided that the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of BW is high enough for observation. Here, we present a clean channel to observe the matter creation via a gamma-gamma collider by using the collimated γ-ray pulses generated in the interaction between 10-PW lasers and narrow tubes. More than $3.2\times 10^8$ positrons with a divergence angle of $\sim 7$ degrees can be created in a single pulse, and the S/N is higher than 2000. This scheme, which provides the first realization of gamma-gamma collider in the laboratory, would pave the developments of quantum electrodynamics, high-energy physics and laboratory astrophysics.

Brilliant GeV Gamma-ray flash from Inverse Compton Scattering in QED Regime

An all-optical scheme is proposed for studying a laser-plasma based incoherent photon emission from inverse Compton scattering in quantum electrodynamic (QED) regime. A theoretical model is presented to explain the coupling effect among radiation reaction trapping, self-generated magnetic field and spiral attractor in phase space, which guarantees the energy and angular momentum (AM) transformation from electromagnetic fields to particles. Taking advantage of a prospective $\sim$10$^{23}$W/cm$^{2}$ laser facility, 3D Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations manifest the present gamma-ray flash with an unprecedented power of multi-petawatt (PW) and brightness of 1.7$\times$10$^{23}$photons/s/mm$^2$/mrad$^2$/0.1$\%$bandwidth (at 1GeV). These results bode well for new research direction in particle physics and laboratory astrophysics while exploring laser plasma interaction.

Efficient visible frequency comb generation via Cherenkov radiation from a Kerr microcomb

Optical frequency combs enable state-of-the-art applications including frequency metrology, optical clocks, astronomical measurements, and sensing. Recent demonstrations of microresonator-based Kerr frequency combs or microcombs pave the way to scalable and stable comb sources on a photonic chip. Generating microcombs in the visible wavelength range, however, has been limited by large material dispersion and optical loss. Here we demonstrate a scheme for efficiently generating visible microcomb in a high Q aluminum nitride microring resonator. Enhanced Pockels effect strongly couples infrared and visible modes into hybrid mode pairs, which participate in the Kerr microcomb generation process and lead to strong Cherenkov radiation in the visible band of an octave apart. A surprisingly high conversion efficiency of 22% is achieved from the pump laser to the visible comb. We further demonstrate a robust frequency tuning of the visible comb by more than one free spectral range and apply it to the absorption spectroscopy of a water-based dye molecule solution. Our work marks the first step towards high-efficiency visible microcomb generation and its utilization, and it also provides insights on the significance of Pockels effect and its strong coupling with Kerr nonlinearity in a single microcavity device.
