Strongly frustrated 2D magnetism in a 3D hexagonal perovskite

Exotic quantum phenomena are often found to occur in spin systems that exhibit low-dimensional magnetism. By combining nuclear magnetic resonance, neutron scattering, and muon-spin spectroscopy ($μ$SR) techniques, we report a rare instance of strongly frustrated two-dimensional (2D) magnetism in a three-dimensional (3D) hexagonal perovskite. Here, Ba$_2$La$_2$MnTe$_2$O$_{12}$, a triangular-lattice magnet, is shown to undergo a magnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N} \approx$ 4.4 K, below which the manganese moments form a 120$^{\circ}$ AFM order within the $ab$-plane, while staying disordered along the $c$-axis. This exotic ground state, which exhibits ideal 2D magnetism, is highly consistent with the persistently strong spin fluctuations and the large internal field distributions revealed by zero-field $μ$SR. Further, the 2D magnetism also leads to a significant frustration, much larger than that of most known magnetically-ordered frustrated systems. Our work on Ba$_2$La$_2$MnTe$_2$O$_{12}$ not only challenges the interpretations of magnetic order in other 3D hexagonal perovskites, but it also provides insight into how the dimensionality affects the exotic magnetic states.

Structure and magnetic properties of a family of two-leg spin ladder compounds Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, and Gd-Ho) with strong rung interaction

Compared to the intensive investigation on the 3d transition-metal (TM)-based spin ladder compounds, less attention has been paid to the ones constructed by the rare-earth (RE) ions. Herein, we report a family of RE-based spin ladder compounds Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) crystallized into the monoclinic structure with the space group C2/c. The RE ions are arranged on a two-leg spin ladder motif along the b-axis, where the rung and leg exchange interactions are bridged via the RE-O-RE pathways and RE-O-Ge-O-RE routes, respectively. Moreover, the much shorter rung distance in the RE2O12 dimer units than the leg distance suggests Ba2RE2Ge4O13 to be a strong-rung spin ladder system. All the synthesized Ba2RE2Ge4O13 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Ho) compounds exhibit the dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and absence of magnetic order down to 1.8 K. Among the family members, Ba2Dy2Ge4O13 can be described by Jeff = 1/2 Kramers doublet states, the low temperature specific heat indicates the coexistence of spin dimerized state with broad maximum at ~ 2.4 K and long-range AFM order with TN = 0.81 K. This family of Ba2RE2Ge4O13 compounds thereby provides a rare platform to investigate the novel spin ladder physics constructed by 4f electrons.

A family of rare-earth Quasi-One-Dimensional spin-chain compounds K2RENb5O15 (RE=Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm,Gd-Ho) with large interchain distance

One-dimensional spin chain systems have received special attention to discover the novel magnetic ground states and emergent phenomena, while the magnetic studies on rare-earth (RE)-based 1D spin chain materials are still rare. Here, we report the synthesis, structure and magnetic behaviors on a family of tetragonal tungsten-bronze structure K2RENb5O15 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd-Ho) compounds, which consist of 1D linear spin-chain structure built by RE3+ ions along the c-axis and well spatially separated by the nonmagnetic K/Nb-O polyhedrons with large interchain distances of ~ 8.80-8.88 Å in the ab-plane. The low temperature magnetic measurements reveal the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 1.8 K for all serial K2RENb5O15 compounds and the dominant ferromagnetic interactions for RE=Ce,Dy and antiferromagnetic interactions for other members. Among them, K2GdNb5O15 with spin only magnetic moment S=7/2, exhibits a long-range magnetic order with TN~0.31 K and strong spin fluctuations at low temperatures due to its low-dimension characteristics. Moreover, a large magnetocaloric effect under low field change of 0-2 T is realized at temperatures below 1 K for K2GdNb5O15, letting it as an ideal candidate for adiabatic magnetic refrigeration applications at sub-kelvin temperatures. The K2RENb5O15 become a rare family of insulting RE-based magnets to explore the novel 1D spin chain physics beyond the 3d TM-based counterparts, in terms of its combination of low dimension, strong spin-orbital coupling and the rich diversity of RE ions.

Ba9RE2(SiO4)6 (RE=Ho-Yb): A New Family of Rare-earth based Honeycomb Lattice Magnets

Rare-earth (RE) based honeycomb-lattice materials with strong spin-orbit coupled Jeff=1/2 moments have attracted great interest as a platform to realize Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. Herein, we report the discovery of a new family of RE based honeycomb-lattice magnets Ba9RE2(SiO4)6(RE=Ho-Yb), which crystallize into the rhombohedral structure with space group R-3. In these serial compounds, magnetic RE3+ ions are arranged on a perfect honeycomb lattice within the ab-plane and stacked in the ABCABC-type fashion along the c-axis. All Ba9RE2(SiO4)6(RE=Ho-Yb) polycrystals exhibit the dominant antiferromagnetic interactions and absence of magnetic order down to 2 K. In combination with the magnetization and electron spin resonance (ESR) results, distinct anisotropic magnetic behaviors are proposed for compounds with different RE ions. Moreover, the synthesized Ba9Yb2Si6O24 single crystals show large magnetic frustration and no long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.15 K, being a possible QSL candidate state. These serial compounds are attractive for exploring the exotic magnetic phases of Kitaev materials with 4f electrons.

Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations and Nontrivial Topological State in a New Weyl Semimetal Candidate SmAlSi

We perform the quantum magnetotransport measurements and first-principles calculations on high quality single crystals of SmAlSi, a new topological Weyl semimetal candidate. At low temperatures, SmAlSi exhibits large non-saturated magnetoresistance (MR)~5200% (at 2 K, 48 T) and prominent Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, where MRs follow the power-law field dependence with exponent 1.52 at low fields (μ0H < 15 T) and linear behavior 1 under high fields (μ0H > 18 T). The analysis of angle dependent SdH oscillations reveal two fundamental frequencies originated from the Fermi surface (FS) pockets with non-trivial π Berry phases, small cyclotron mass and electron-hole compensation with high mobility at 2 K. In combination with the calculated nontrivial electronic band structure, SmAlSi is proposed to be a paradigm for understanding the Weyl fermions in the topological materials.

Observation of the Anomalous Hall Effect in a Collinear Antiferromagnet

Time-reversal symmetry breaking is the basic physics concept underpinning many magnetic topological phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and its quantized variant. The AHE has been primarily accompanied by a ferromagnetic dipole moment, which hinders the topological quantum states and limits data density in memory devices, or by a delicate noncollinear magnetic order with strong spin decoherence, both limiting their applicability. A potential breakthrough is the recent theoretical prediction of the AHE arising from collinear antiferromagnetism in an anisotropic crystal environment. This new mechanism does not require magnetic dipolar or noncollinear fields. However, it has not been experimentally observed to date. Here we demonstrate this unconventional mechanism by measuring the AHE in an epilayer of a rutile collinear antiferromagnet RuO$_2$. The observed anomalous Hall conductivity is large, exceeding 300 S/cm, and is in agreement with the Berry phase topological transport contribution. Our results open a new unexplored chapter of time-reversal symmetry breaking phenomena in the abundant class of collinear antiferromagnetic materials.

A comparative study on magnetic order and field induced magnetic transition on two series of double perovskite iridates RE2BIrO6 (RE=Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd B=Zn,Mg)

We perform a comparative magnetic study on two series of rare-earth (RE) based double perovskite iridates RE2BIrO6 (RE=Pr,Nd,Sm-Gd;B=Zn,Mg), which show Mott insulating state with tunable charge energy gap from ~330 meV to ~560 meV by changing RE cations. For nonmagnetic RE=Eu cations, Eu2MgIrO6 shows antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and field-induced spin-flop transitions below Néel temperature (TN) in comparison with the ferromagnetic (FM)-like behaviors of Eu2ZnIrO6 at low temperatures. For magnetic-moment-containing RE ions, Gd2BIrO6 show contrasting magnetic behaviors with FM-like transition (B=Zn) and AFM order (B=Mg), respectively. While, for RE=Pr, Nd and Sm ions, all members show AFM ground state and field-induced spin-flop transitions below TN irrespective of B=Zn or Mg cations. Moreover, two successive field-induced metamagnetic transitions are observed for RE2ZnIrO6 (RE=Pr,Nd) in high field up to 56 T, the resultant field temperature (H-T) phase diagrams are constructed. The diverse magnetic behaviors in RE2BIrO6 reveal that the 4f-Ir exchange interactions between the RE and Ir sublattices can mediate their magnetism.

Realization of Kondo chain in CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$

We revisited the anisotropy of the heavy-fermion material CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ by measuring the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility along all the principal $\mathbf{a}$-, $\mathbf{b}$- and $\mathbf{c}$-axes. Resistivity along $\mathbf{c}$-axis ($ρ_c$) shows clear Kondo coherence below about 17 K, while both $ρ_{a}$ and $ρ_{b}$ remain incoherent down to 2 K. The magnetic anisotropy is well understood within the theoretical frame of crystalline electric field effect in combination with magnetic exchange interactions. We found the anisotropy ratio of these magnetic exchange interactions, $|J_{ex}^c/J_{ex}^{a,b}|$, reaches a large value of 4-5. We, therefore, firmly demonstrate that CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$ is a quasi-one-dimensional heavy-fermion compound both electrically and magnetically, and thus provide a realistic example of \textit{Kondo chain}.

Chiral Landau levels in Weyl semimetal NbAs with multiple topological carriers

Recently, Weyl semimetals have been experimentally discovered in both inversion-symmetry-breaking and time-reversal-symmetry-breaking crystals. The non-trivial topology in Weyl semimetals can manifest itself with exotic phenomena which have been extensively investigated by photoemission and transport measurements. Despite the numerous experimental efforts on Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly, the existence of unconventional zeroth Landau levels, as a unique hallmark of Weyl fermions which is highly related to chiral anomaly, remains elusive owing to the stringent experimental requirements. Here, we report the magneto-optical study of Landau quantization in Weyl semimetal NbAs. High magnetic fields drive the system towards the quantum limit which leads to the observation of zeroth chiral Landau levels in two inequivalent Weyl nodes. As compared to other Landau levels, the zeroth chiral Landau level exhibits a distinct linear dispersion in z momentum direction and allows the optical transitions without the limitation of zero z momentum or square root of magnetic field evolution. The magnetic field dependence of the zeroth Landau levels further verifies the predicted particle-hole asymmetry of the Weyl cones. Meanwhile, the optical transitions from the normal Landau levels exhibit the coexistence of multiple carriers including an unexpected massive Dirac fermion, pointing to a more complex topological nature in inversion-symmetry-breaking Weyl semimetals. Our results provide insights into the Landau quantization of Weyl fermions and demonstrate an effective tool for studying complex topological systems.

Topological Phase Transition-Induced Tri-Axial Vector Magnetoresistance in (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 Nanodevices

We report the study of a tri-axial vector magnetoresistance (MR) in nonmagnetic (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 nanodevices at the composition of x = 0.08. We show a dumbbell-shaped in-plane negative MR up to room temperature as well as a large out-of-plane positive MR. MR at three directions is about in a -3%: -1%: 225% ratio at 2 K. Through both the thickness and composition-dependent magnetotransport measurements, we show that the in-plane negative MR is due to the topological phase transition enhanced intersurface coupling near the topological critical point. Our devices suggest the great potential for room-temperature spintronic applications, for example, vector magnetic sensors.

Temperature and Angular Dependence of the Upper Critical Field in K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$

We report measurements of the upper critical field $H_{\mathrm{c2}}$ as functions of temperature $T$, polar angle $θ$ (of the field direction with respect to the crystallographic $c$ axis), and azimuthal angle $ϕ$ (of the field direction relative to the $a$ axis within the $ab$ plane) for the Cr-based superconductor K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ with a quasi-one-dimensional and non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. We confirm that the anisotropy in $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(T)$ becomes inverse with decreasing temperature. At low temperatures, $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(θ)$ data are featured by two maxima at $θ$ = 0 ($\mathbf{H}\parallel c$) and $π/2$ ($\mathbf{H}\bot c$), which can be quantitatively understood only if uniaxial effective-mass anisotropy and absence of Pauli paramagnetic effect for $\mathbf{H}\bot c$ are taken simultaneously into consideration. The in-plane $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(ϕ)$ profile shows a unique threefold modulation especially at low temperatures. Overall, the characteristic of the $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(θ, ϕ, T)$ data mostly resemble those of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$, and we argue in favor of a dominant spin-triplet superconductivity with odd parity in K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$.

Unsaturated magnetoconductance of epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T

We report on the temperature and field dependence of resistance of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films over a wide temperature range and in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. The epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films were deposited by laser molecular beam epitaxy. High magnetic field magnetoresistance curves were fitted by the Brillouin function, which indicated the existence of magnetically polarized regions and the underlying hopping mechanism. The unsaturated magnetoconductance was the most striking finding observed in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. These observations can deepen the fundamental understanding of the colossal magnetoresistance in manganites with strong correlation of transport properties and magnetic ordering.

Evidence of both surface and bulk Dirac bands in ZrSiS and the unconventional magnetoresistance

The unconventional magnetoresistance of ZrSiS single crystals is found unsaturated till the magnetic field of 53 T with the butterfly shaped angular dependence. Intense Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations resolve a bulk Dirac cone with a nontrivial Berry phase, where the Fermi surface area is 1.80*10^-3 Å-2 and reaches the quantum limit before 20 T. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement reveals an electronic state with the two-dimensional nature around the X point of Brillouin zone boundary. By integrating the density functional theory calculations, ZrSiS is suggested to be a Dirac material with both surface and bulk Dirac bands.

Multiferroicity and Magnetoelectric Coupling in TbMnO3 Thin Films

In this work, we report the growth and functional characterizations of multiferroic TbMnO3 thin films grown on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. By performing detailed magnetic and ferroelectric properties measurements, we demonstrate that the multiferroicity of spin origin known in the bulk crystals can be successfully transferred to TbMnO3 thin films. Meanwhile, anomalous magnetic transition and unusual magnetoelectric coupling related to Tb moments are observed, suggesting a modified magnetic configuration of Tb in the films as compared to the bulk counterpart. In addition, it is found that the magnetoelectric coupling enabled by Tb moments can even be seen far above the Tb spin ordering temperature, which provides a larger temperature range for the magnetoelectric control involving Tb moments.

Landau level splitting in Cd3As2 under high magnetic fields

Three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) are a new kind of Dirac materials that exhibit linear energy dispersion in the bulk and can be viewed as three-dimensional graphene. It has been proposed that TDSs can be driven to other exotic phases like Weyl semimetals, topological insulators and topological superconductors by breaking certain symmetries. Here we report the first transport experiment on Landau level splitting in TDS Cd3As2 single crystals under high magnetic fields, suggesting the removal of spin degeneracy by breaking time reversal symmetry. The detected Berry phase develops an evident angular dependence and possesses a crossover from nontrivial to trivial state under high magnetic fields, a strong hint for a fierce competition between the orbit-coupled field strength and the field-generated mass term. Our results unveil the important role of symmetry breaking in TDSs and further demonstrate a feasible path to generate a Weyl semimetal phase by breaking time reversal symmetry.

Robust linear magnetoresistance in WTe2

Unsaturated magnetoresistance (MR) has been reported in WTe2, and remains irrepressible up to very high field. Intense optimization of the crystalline quality causes a squarely-increasing MR, as interpreted by perfect compensation of opposite carriers. Herein we report our observation of linear MR (LMR) in WTe2 crystals, the onset of which is first identified by constructing the mobility spectra of the MR at low fields. The LMR further intensifies and predominates at fields higher than 20 Tesla while the parabolic MR gradually decays. The LMR remains unsaturated up to a high field of 60 Tesla and persists, even at a high pressure of 6.2 GPa. Assisted by density functional theory calculations and detailed mobility spectra, we find the LMR to be robust against the applications of high field, broken carrier balance, and mobility suppression. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals a unique quasilinear energy dispersion near the Fermi level. Our results suggest that the robust LMR is the low bound of the unsaturated MR in WTe2.

Crossover between Weak Antilocalization and Weak Localization of Bulk States in Ultrathin Bi2Se3 Films

We report transport studies on the 5 nm thick Bi2Se3 topological insulator films which are grown via molecular beam epitaxy technique. The angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data show that the Fermi level of the system lies in the bulk conduction band above the Dirac point, suggesting important contribution of bulk states to the transport results. In particular, the crossover from weak antilocalization to weak localization in the bulk states is observed in the parallel magnetic field measurements up to 50 Tesla. The measured magneto-resistance exhibits interesting anisotropy with respect to the orientation of B// and I, signifying intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in the Bi2Se3 films. Our work directly shows the crossover of quantum interference effect in the bulk states from weak antilocalization to weak localization. It presents an important step toward a better understanding of the existing three-dimensional topological insulators and the potential applications of nano-scale topological insulator devices.

High temperature superconducting FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrates

Interface enhanced superconductivity at two dimensional limit has become one of most intriguing research directions in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the superconducting properties of ultra-thin FeSe films with the thickness of one unit cell (1-UC) grown on conductive and insulating SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. For the 1-UC FeSe on conductive STO substrate (Nb-STO), the magnetization versus temperature (M-T) measurement shows a diamagnetic signal at 85 K, suggesting the possibility of superconductivity appears at this high temperature. For the FeSe films on insulating STO substrate, systematic transport measurements were carried out and the sheet resistance of FeSe films exhibits Arrhenius TAFF behavior with a crossover from a single-vortex pinning region to a collective creep region. More intriguing, sign reversal of Hall resistance with temperature is observed, demonstrating a crossover from hole conduction to electron conduction above Tc in 1-UC FeSe films.
