An initial-boundary value problem for the integrable spin-1 Gross-Pitaevskii equations with a 4x4 Lax pair on the half-line

We investigate the initial-boundary value problem for the integrable spin-1 Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with a 4x4 Lax pair on the half-line. The solution of this system can be obtained in terms of the solution of a 4x4 matrix Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem formulated in the complex k-plane. The relevant jump matrices of the RH problem can be explicitly found using the two spectral functions s(k) and S(k), which can be defined by the initial data, the Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data at x=0. The global relation is established between the two dependent spectral functions. The general mappings between Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values are analyzed in terms of the global relation.

An initial-boundary value problem of the general three-component nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a 4x4 Lax pair on a finite interval

We investigate the initial-boundary value problem for the general three-component nonlinear Schrodinger (gtc-NLS) equation with a 4x4 Lax pair on a finite interval by extending the Fokas unified approach. The solutions of the gtc-NLS equation can be expressed in terms of the solutions of a 4x4 matrix Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem formulated in the complex k-plane. Moreover, the relevant jump matrices of the RH problem can be explicitly found via the three spectral functions arising from the initial data, the Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data. The global relation is also established to deduce two distinct but equivalent types of representations (i.e., one by using the large k of asymptotics of the eigenfunctions and another one in terms of the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko (GLM) method) for the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. Moreover, the relevant formulae for boundary value problems on the finite interval can reduce to ones on the half-line as the length of the interval approaches to infinity. Finally, we also give the linearizable boundary conditions for the GLM representation.

On stable solitons and interactions of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation with PT-and non-PT-symmetric potentials

We report the bright solitons of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with some types of physically relevant parity-time-(PT-) and non-PT-symmetric potentials. We find that the constant momentum coefficient can modulate the linear stability and complicated transverse power-flows (not always from the gain toward loss) of nonlinear modes. However, the varying momentum coefficient Gamma(x) can modulate both unbroken linear PT-symmetric phases and stability of nonlinear modes. Particularly, the nonlinearity can excite the unstable linear mode (i.e., broken linear PT-symmetric phase) to stable nonlinear modes. Moreover, we also find stable bright solitons in the presence of non-PT-symmetric harmonic-Gaussian potential. The interactions of two bright solitons are also illustrated in PT-symmetric potentials. Finally, we consider nonlinear modes and transverse power-flows in the three-dimensional (3D) GP equation with the generalized PT-symmetric Scarf-II potential

Solitonic dynamics and excitations of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with third-order dispersion in non-Hermitian PT-symmetric potentials

Solitons are of the important significant in many fields of nonlinear science such as nonlinear optics, Bose-Einstein condensates, plamas physics, biology, fluid mechanics, and etc.. The stable solitons have been captured not only theoretically and experimentally in both linear and nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations in the presence of non-Hermitian potentials since the concept of the parity-time (PT)-symmetry was introduced in 1998. In this paper, we present novel bright solitons of the NLS equation with third-order dispersion in some complex PT-symmetric potentials (e.g., physically relevant PT-symmetric Scarff-II-like and harmonic-Gaussian potentials). We find stable nonlinear modes even if the respective linear PT-symmetric phases are broken. Moreover, we also use the adiabatic changes of the control parameters to excite the initial modes related to exact solitons to reach stable nonlinear modes. The elastic interactions of two solitons are exhibited in the third-order NLS equation with PT-symmetric potentials. Our results predict the dynamical phenomena of soliton equations in the presence of third-order dispersion and PT-symmetric potentials arising in nonlinear fiber optics and other physically relevant fields.

Localized Analytical Solutions and Parameters Analysis in the Nonlinear Dispersive Gross-Pitaevskii Mean-Field GP (m,n) Model with Space-Modulated Nonlinearity and Potential

The novel nonlinear dispersive Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) mean-field model with the space-modulated nonlinearity and potential (called GP(m, n) equation) is investigated in this paper. By using self-similar transformations and some powerful methods, we obtain some families of novel envelope compacton-like solutions spikon-like solutions to the GP(n, n) (n>1) equation. These solutions possess abundant localized structures because of infinite choices of the self-similar function X(x). In particular, we choose X(x) as the Jacobi amplitude function am(x,k) and the combination of linear and trigonometric functions of space x so that the novel localized structures of the GP(2,2) equation are illustrated, which are much different from the usual compacton and spikon solutions reported. Moreover, it is shown that GP(m,1) equation with linear dispersion also admits the compacton-like solutions for the case 0<m<1 and spikon-like solutions for the case m<0.

Dynamics of higher-order rational solitons for the nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the self-induced parity-time-symmetric potential

The integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger (NNLS) equation with the self-induced parity-time-symmetric potential [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 064105] is investigated, which is an integrable extension of the standard NLS equation. Its novel higher-order rational solitons are found using the nonlocal version of the generalized perturbation (1, N-1)-fold Darboux transformation. These rational solitons illustrate abundant wave structures for the distinct choices of parameters (e.g., the strong and weak interactions of bright and dark rational solitons). Moreover, we also explore the dynamical behaviors of these higher-order rational solitons with some small noises on the basis of numerical simulations.

Exact solutions to three-dimensional generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations with varying potential and nonlinearities

It is shown that using the similarity transformations, a set of three-dimensional p-q nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with inhomogeneous coefficients can be reduced to one-dimensional stationary NLS equation with constant or varying coefficients, thus allowing for obtaining exact localized and periodic wave solutions. In the suggested reduction the original coordinates in the (1+3)-space are mapped into a set of one-parametric coordinate surfaces, whose parameter plays the role of the coordinate of the one-dimensional equation. We describe the algorithm of finding solutions and concentrate on power (linear and nonlinear) potentials presenting a number of case examples. Generalizations of the method are also discussed.

Matter-wave solutions in the Bose-Einstein condensates with the harmonic and Gaussian potentials

We study exact solutions of the quasi-one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with the (space, time)-modulated potential and nonlinearity and the time-dependent gain or loss term in Bose-Einstein condensates. In particular, based on the similarity transformation, we report several families of exact solutions of the GP equation in the combination of the harmonic and Gaussian potentials, in which some physically relevant solutions are described. The stability of the obtained matter-wave solutions is addressed numerically such that some stable solutions are found. Moreover, we also analyze the parameter regimes for the stable solutions. These results may raise the possibility of relative experiments and potential applications.

Generalized perturbation (n, M)-fold Darboux transformations and multi-rogue-wave structures for the modified self-steepening nonlinear Schrodinger equation

In this paper, a simple and constructive method is presented to find the generalized perturbation (n,M)-fold Darboux transformations (DTs) of the modified nonlinear Schrodinger (MNLS) equation in terms of fractional forms of determinants. In particular, we apply the generalized perturbation (1,N-1)-fold DTs to find its explicit multi-rogue-wave solutions. The wave structures of these rogue-wave solutions of the MNLS equation are discussed in detail for different parameters, which display abundant interesting wave structures, including the triangle and pentagon, etc. and may be useful to study the physical mechanism of multirogue waves in optics. The dynamical behaviors of these multi-rogue-wave solutions are illustrated using numerical simulations. The same Darboux matrix can also be used to investigate the Gerjikov-Ivanov equation such that its multi-rogue-wave solutions and their wave structures are also found. The method can also be extended to find multi-rogue-wave solutions of other nonlinear integrable equations.

Stable parity-time-symmetric nonlinear modes and excitations in a derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation

The effect of derivative nonlinearity and parity-time- (PT-) symmetric potentials on the wave propagation dynamics is investigated in the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation, where the physically interesting Scarff-II and hamonic-Hermite-Gaussian potentials are chosen. We study numerically the regions of unbroken/broken linear PT-symmetric phases and find some stable bright solitons of this model in a wide range of potential parameters even though the corresponding linear PT-symmetric phases are broken. The semi-elastic interactions between exact bright solitons and exotic incident waves are illustrated such that we find that exact nonlinear modes almost keep their shapes after interactions even if the exotic incident waves have evidently been changed. Moreover, we exert the adiabatic switching on PT-symmetric potential parameters such that a stable nonlinear mode with the unbroken linear PT-symmetric phase can be excited to another stable nonlinear mode belonging to the broken linear PT-symmetric phase.

Families of stable solitons and excitations in the PT-symmetric nonlinear Schrodinger equations with position-dependent effective masses

Since the parity-time-(PT-) symmetric quantum mechanics was put forward, fundamental properties of some linear and nonlinear models with PT-symmetric potentials have been investigated. However, previous studies of PT-symmetric waves were limited to constant diffraction coefficients in the ambient medium. Here we address effects of variable diffraction coefficient on the beam dynamics in nonlinear media with generalized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Scarf-II potentials. The broken linear PT symmetry phase may enjoy a restoration with the growing diffraction parameter. Continuous families of one- and two-dimensional solitons are found to be stable. Particularly, some stable solitons are analytically found. The existence range and propagation dynamics of the solitons are identified. Transformation of the solitons by means of adiabatically varying parameters, and collisions between solitons are studied too. We also explore the evolution of constant-intensity waves in a model combining the variable diffraction coefficient and complex potentials with globally balanced gain and loss, which are more general than PT-symmetric ones, but feature similar properties. Our results may suggest new experiments for PT-symmetric nonlinear waves in nonlinear nonuniform optical media.

Higher-order rational solitons and rogue-like wave solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear fluid mechanics equations

The novel generalized perturbation (n, M)-fold Darboux transformations (DTs) are reported for the (2+1)-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation and its extension by using the Taylor expansion of the Darboux matrix. The generalized perturbation (1, N-1)-fold DTs are used to find their higher-order rational solitons and rogue wave solutions in terms of determinants. The dynamics behaviors of these rogue waves are discussed in detail for different parameters and time, which display the interesting RW and soliton structures including the triangle, pentagon, heptagon profiles, etc. Moreover, we find that a new phenomenon that the parameter (a) can control the wave structures of the KP equation from the higher-order rogue waves (a>0 or a<0) into higher-order rational solitons (a = 0) in (x, t)-space with y=const. These results may predict the corresponding dynamical phenomena in the models of fluid mechanics and other physically relevant systems.

Nonlocal general vector nonlinear Schroedinger equations:Integrability, PT symmetribility, and solutions

A family of new one-parameter (ε_x=\pm 1) nonlinear wave models (called G_{ε_x}^{(nm)} model) is presented, including both the local (ε_x=1) and new integrable nonlocal $(ε_x=-1)$ general vector nonlinear Schrödinger (VNLS) equations with the self-phase, cross-phase, and multi-wave mixing modulations. The nonlocal G_{-1}^{(nm)} model is shown to possess the Lax pair and infinite number of conservation laws for $m=1$. We also establish a connection between the G_{ε_x}^{(nm)} model and some known models. Some symmetric reductions and exact solutions (e.g., bright, dark, and mixed bright-dark solitons) of the representative nonlocal systems are also found. Moreover, we find that the new general two-parameter (ε_x, ε_t) model (called G_{ε_x, ε_t}^{(nm)} model) including the G_{ε_x}^{(nm)} model is invariant under the PT-symmetric transformation and the PT symmetribility of its self-induced potentials is discussed for the distinct two parameters (ε_x, ε_t)=(\pm 1, \pm 1).

Higher-order vector discrete rogue-wave states in the coupled Ablowitz-Ladik equations: exact solutions and stability

An integrable system of two-component nonlinear Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) equations is used to construct complex rogue-wave (RW) solutions in an explicit form. First, the modulational instability of continuous waves is studied in the system. Then, new higher-order discrete two-component RW solutions of the system are found by means of a newly derived discrete version of a generalized Darboux transformation. Finally, perturbed evolution of these RW states is explored in terms of systematic simulations, which demonstrates that tightly and loosely bound RWs are, respectively, nearly stable and strongly unstable solutions.

Spatial solitons and stability in self-focusing and defocusing Kerr nonlinear media with generalized PT-symmetric Scarff-II potentials

We present a unified theoretical study of the bright solitons governed by self-focusing and defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with generalized parity-time (PT)-symmetric Scarff II potentials. Particularly, a PT-symmetric k-wavenumber Scarff II potential and a multi-well Scarff II potential are considered, respectively. For the k-wavenumber Scarff II potential, the parameter space can be divided into different regions, corresponding to unbroken and broken PT-symmetry and the bright solitons for self-focusing and defocusing Kerr nonlinearities. For the multi-well Scarff II potential the bright solitons can be obtained by using a periodically space-modulated Kerr nonlinearity. The linear stability of bright solitons with PT-symmetric k-wavenumber and multi-well Scarff II potentials is analyzed in details using numerical simulations. Stable and unstable bright solitons are found in both regions of unbroken and broken PT-symmetry due to the existence of the nonlinearity. Furthermore, the bright solitons in three-dimensional self-focusing and defocusing NLS equations with a generalized PT-symmetric Scarff II potential are explored. This may have potential applications in the field of optical information transmission and processing based on optical solitons in nonlinear dissipative but PT-symmetric systems.

Rogue waves, rational solitons, and modulational instability in an integrable fifth-order nonlinear Schroedinger equation

We analytically study rogue-wave (RW) solutions and rational solitons of an integrable fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger (FONLS) equation with three free parameters. It includes, as particular cases, the usual NLS, Hirota, and Lakshmanan-Porsezian-Daniel (LPD) equations. We present continuous-wave (CW) solutions and conditions for their modulation instability in the framework of this model. Applying the Darboux transformation to the CW input, novel first- and second-order RW solutions of the FONLS equation are analytically found. In particular, trajectories of motion of peaks and depressions of profiles of the first- and second-order RWs are produced by means of analytical and numerical methods. The solutions also include newly found rational and W-shaped one- and two-soliton modes. The results predict the corresponding dynamical phenomena in extended models of nonlinear fiber optics and other physically relevant integrable systems.

Solitons in a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with PT-symmetric potentials and inhomogeneous nonlinearity: stability and excitation of nonlinear modes

We report branches of explicit expressions for nonlinear modes in parity-time (PT) symmetric potentials of several types. For the single-well and double-well potentials the found solutions are two-parametric and appear to be stable even when the PT-symmetry of respective underlying linear models is broken. Based on the examples of these solutions we describe an algorithm of excitation of a stable nonlinear mode in a model, whose linear limit is unstable. The method is based on the adiabatic change of the control parameter driving the mode along a branch bifurcating from a stable linear mode. The suggested algorithm is confirmed by extensive numerical simulations.

Optical rogue waves in the generalized inhomogeneous higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation with modulating coefficients

The higher-order dispersive and nonlinear effects (alias {\it the perturbation terms}) like the third-order dispersion, the self-steepening, and the self-frequency shift play important roles in the study of the ultra-short optical pulse propagation. We consider optical rogue wave solutions and interactions for the generalized higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with space- and time-modulated parameters. A proper transformation is presented to reduce the generalized higher-order NLS equation to the integrable Hirota equation with constant coefficients. This transformation allows us to relate certain class of exact solutions of the generalized higher-order NLS equation to the variety of solutions of the integrable Hirota equation. In particular, we illustrate the approach in terms of two lowest-order rational solutions of the Hirota equation as seeding functions to generate rogue wave solutions localized in time that have complicated evolution in space with or without the differential gain or loss term. We simply analyze the physical mechanisms of the obtained optical rogue waves on the basis of these constraints. Finally, The stability of the obtained rogue-wave solutions is addressed numerically. The obtained rogue wave solutions may raise the possibility of relative experiments and potential applications in nonlinear optics and other fields of nonlinear science as Bose-Einstein condensates and ocean
