Metal deficient AlB$_{2}$-type (Ti$_{0.2}$Zr$_{0.2}$Hf$_{0.2}$Nb$_{0.2}$Ta$_{0.2}$)$_{1-δ}$B$_{2}$ high-entropy diborides with high hardness

We report the synthesis and characterization of metal deficient (Ti$_{0.2}$Zr$_{0.2}$Hf$_{0.2}$Nb$_{0.2}$Ta$_{0.2}$)$_{1-δ}$B$_{2}$ high-entropy diborides (HEBs). A single homogeneous AlB$_{2}$-type phase is successfully obtained over the $δ$ range of 0.03 $\leq$ $δ$ $\leq$ 0.18. With increasing $δ$, the unit-cell volume exhibits a nonmonotonic variation with a maximum at $δ$ = 0.07. These metal-deficient HEBs possess high Vickers hardness of 16.6-18.9 GPa at a load of 9.8 N and their phase stability is attributed to the increased mixing entropy. Our results not only present the first series of metal-deficient AlB$_{2}$-type HEBs, but also suggest the existence of similar multicomponent diborides.

Superconductivity with large upper critical field in noncentrosymmetric Cr-bearing high-entropy alloys

A series of new Cr$_{5+x}$Mo$_{35-x}$W$_{12}$Re$_{35}$Ru$_{13}$C$_{20}$ high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have been synthesized and characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. It is found that the HEAs adopt a noncentrosymmetric cubic $β$-Mn type structure and exhibit bulk superconductivity for 0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 9. With increasing $x$, the cubic lattice parameter decreases from 6.7940(3) Å to 6.7516(3) Å. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is suppressed from 5.49 K to 3.35 K due to the magnetic pair breaking caused by Cr moments. For all these noncentrosymmetric HEAs, the zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) is comparable to Pauli paramagnetic limit $B_{\rm P}$(0) = 1.86$T_{\rm c}$. In particular, the $B_{\rm c2}$(0)/$B_{\rm P}$(0) ratio reaches a maximum of $\sim$1.03 at $x$ = 6, which is among the highest for $β$-Mn type superconductors.

Mo$_{3}$ReRuC: A noncentrosymmetric superconductor formed in the MoReRu-Mo$_{2}$C system

A quaternary compound with the composition Mo$_{3}$ReRuC is obtained in a previously unexplored MoReRu-Mo$_{2}$C system. According to x-ray structural analysis, Mo$_{3}$ReRuC crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group $P$4$_{1}$32 (cubic $β$-Mn type structure, $a$ = 6.8107(1) Å). Below 7.7 K, Mo$_{3}$ReRuC becomes a bulk type-II superconductor with an upper critical field close to the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The specific heat data gives a large normalized jump $Δ$$C_{\rm p}$/$γ$$T_{\rm c}$ = 2.3 at $T_{\rm c}$, which points to a strongly coupled superconducting state. First principles calculations show that its electronic states at the Fermi level are mainly contributed by Mo, Re and Ru atoms and strongly increased by the spin-orbit coupling. Our finding suggests that the intermediate phase between alloys and carbides may be a good place to look for $β$-Mn type noncentrosymmetric superconductors.

High-entropy silicide superconductors with W$_{5}$Si$_{3}$-type structure

We report the synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties of two new high-entropy silicides (HESs), namely (Nb$_{0.1}$Mo$_{0.3}$W$_{0.3}$Re$_{0.2}$Ru$_{0.1}$)$_{5}$Si$_{3}$ and (Nb$_{0.2}$Mo$_{0.3}$W$_{0.3}$Re$_{0.1}$Ru$_{0.1}$)$_{5}$Si$_{3}$. Structural analysis indicates that both HESs consist of a (nearly) single tetragonal W$_{5}$Si$_{3}$-type phase (space group $I$4/$mcm$) with a disordered cation distribution. Electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements show that (Nb$_{0.1}$Mo$_{0.3}$W$_{0.3}$Re$_{0.2}$Ru$_{0.1}$)$_{5}$Si$_{3}$ and (Nb$_{0.2}$Mo$_{0.3}$W$_{0.3}$Re$_{0.1}$Ru$_{0.1}$)$_{5}$Si$_{3}$ are weakly coupled bulk superconductors, which represent the first superconducting high-entropy nonoxide ceramics. In particular, these HESs have higher $T_{\rm c}$ values (3.2-3.3 K) compared with those of the binary counterparts, and their $B_{\rm c2}$(0)/$T_{\rm c}$ ratios are the largest among superconductors of the same structural type.

Enhancement of superconductivity on the verge of a structural instability in isovalently doped $β$-ThRh$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$Ge

$β$-ThRhGe, the high-temperature polymorph of ThRhGe, is isostructural to the well-known ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe. However, contrary to URhGe, $β$-ThRhGe is nonmagnetic and undergoes an incomplete structural phase transition at 244 K, followed by a superconducting transition below 3.36 K. Here we show that the isovalent substitution of Ir for Rh leads to a strong enhancement of superconductivity by suppressing the structural transition. At $x$ = 0.5, where the structural transition disappears, $T_{\rm c}$ reaches a maximum of 6.88 K. The enhancement of superconductivity is linked to the proximity to a structural quantum critical point at this Ir concentration, as suggested by the analysis of thermodynamic as well as resistivity data. First principles calculations indicate that the Ir doping has little effect on the electronic band dispersion near the Fermi level. $β$-ThRh$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$Ge thus provides an excellent platform to study the interplay between superconductivity and structural quantum criticality in actinide-containing compounds.

de Haas-van Alphen effect and the first-principles study of the possible topological stannide Cu$_3$Sn

The quest for quantum materials with diverse symmetry-protected topological states has been the focus of recent research interest, primarily due to their fascinating physical properties and the potential technological utility. In this work, we report on the magnetotransport, de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations, and the first-principles calculations of the stannide Cu$_3$Sn that is isostructural with the recently reported topological semimetal Ag$_3$Sn. The magnetoresistance was found to vary quasi-linearly in field. Clear dHvA oscillations were observed under a field as low as 1 Tesla at 2 K, with three major oscillation frequencies $F_α$=8.74 T, $F_β$=150.19 T and $F_γ$=229.66 T and extremely small effective masses. The analysis of dHvA quantum oscillations revealed a possible nonzero Berry phase, suggestive of the nontrivial band topology. The corroborating evidence for the nontrivial electronic topology also comes from the first-principles calculations which yield a nonzero $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological index. These results collectively suggest that Cu$_3$Sn, in analogy to its homologue Ag$_3$Sn, may be another intermetallic stannide hosting topological Dirac fermions.

Anisotropy of the magnetic and transport properties in EuZn$_2$As$_2$

Several recent studies have shown that the anisotropy in the magnetic structure of \ECA\ plays a significant role in stabilizing the Weyl nodes. To investigate the relationship between magnetic anisotropy and Weyl physics, we present a comparative study between EuZn$_2$As$_2$ and EuCd$_2$As$_2$ that are isostructural but with different magnetic anisotropy. We performed structural analysis, electronic transport, and magnetization experiments on millimeter-sized single crystals of EuZn$_2$As$_2$, and compared the results to those of EuCd$_2$As$_2$. By combining the first principle calculations and neutron diffraction experiment, we identify the magnetic ground state of EuZn$_2$As$_2$ as A-type antiferromagnetic order with a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{N}$ = 19.6 K) twice that of EuCd$_2$As$_2$. Like EuCd$_2$As$_2$, the negative magnetoresistance of EuZn$_2$As$_2$ is observed after suppressing the resistivity peak at $T_\mathrm{N}$ with increasing fields. However, the anisotropy in both transport and magnetization are much reduced in EuZn$_2$As$_2$. The difference could be ascribed to the weaker spin-orbit coupling, more localized $d$-orbitals, and a larger contribution from the Eu $s$-orbitals in the zinc compound, as suggested by the electronic band calculations. The same band structure effect could be also responsible for the observation of a smaller non-linear anomalous Hall effect in EuZn$_2$As$_2$ compared to EuCd$_2$As$_2$.

Magnetic and superconducting phase diagram of Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)As$_{2}$

We report the Ni-doping effect on magnetism and superconductivity (SC) in an Eu-containing 112-type system Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x})$As$_{2}$ ($0\leq x\leq 0.15$) by the measurements of resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat. The undoped EuFeAs$_2$ undergoes a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition at $T_\mathrm{SDW}\sim$ 105 K in the Fe sublattice and a magnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm{m}\sim$ 40 K in the Eu sublattice. Complex Eu-spin magnetism is manifested by a spin-glass reentrance at $T_\mathrm{SG}\sim$ 15 K and an additional spin reorientation at $T_\mathrm{SR}\sim$ 7 K. With Ni doping, the SDW order is rapidly suppressed, and SC emerges in the Ni-doping range of 0.01 $\leq x\leq$ 0.1 where a maximum of the superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}^{\mathrm{max}}=$ 17.6 K shows up at $x$ = 0.04. On the other hand, $T_\mathrm{m}$ decreases very slowly, yet $T_\mathrm{SG}$ and $T_\mathrm{SR}$ hardly change with the Ni doping. The phase diagram has been established, which suggests a very weak coupling between SC and Eu spins. The complex Eu-spin magnetism is discussed in terms of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions mediated by the conduction electrons from both layers of FeAs and As surrounding Eu$^{2+}$ ions.

Bulk superconductivity and Pauli paramagnetism in nearly stoichiometric CuCo$_2$S$_4$

It has long remained elusive whether CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ thiospinel shows bulk superconductivity. Here we clarify the issue by studying on the samples of sulfur-deficient CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ and sulfurized CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$. The sample CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ has a smaller lattice constant of $a=9.454$ Å, and it is not superconducting down to 1.8 K. After a full sulfurization, the $a$ axis of the thiospinel phase increases to 9.475 Å, and the thiospinel becomes nearly stoichiometric CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$, although a secondary phase of slightly Cu-doped CoS$_2$ forms. Bulk superconductivity at 4.2 K and Pauli paramagnetism have been demonstrated for the sulfurized CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ by the measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat.

Anisotropic superconductivity in topological crystalline metal Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ with multiple Dirac fermions

Topological crystalline metals/semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated a great research interest, which broaden the classification of topological phases and provide a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor ({\em T}$_c \approx$ 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field ($γ_{H_{c2}}$ = $H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^{c}$ $\approx$ 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the $k_z = π$ plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation/screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.

Metal-insulator-like transition, superconducting dome and topological electronic structure in Ga-doped Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$

Superconductivity frequently appears by doping compounds that show a collective phase transition. So far, however, this has not been observed in topological materials. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity induced by Ga doping in orthorhombic Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$, which undergoes a second-order metal-insulator-like transition at $\sim$58 K and is predicted to have a nontrivial band topology. It is found that the substitution of Ga for Ge leads to hole doping in Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7-x}$Ga$_{x}$. As a consequence, the phase transition is gradually suppressed and disappears above $x$ = 0.2. At this $x$ value, superconductivity emerges and $T_{\rm c}$ exhibits a dome-like doping dependence with a maximum value of 3.37 K at $x$ = 0.25. First-principles calculations suggest that the phase transition in Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$ is associated with an electronic instability driven by Fermi surface nesting and the nontrival band topology is preserved after Ga doping. Our results indicate that Ga-doped Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$ provides a rare opportunity to study the interplay between superconductivity and competing electronic states in a topologically nontrivial system.

Superconductivity in ThMo2Si2C with Mo2C Square Net

We report the superconductivity of a new quaternary compound ThMo$_2$Si$_2$C, synthesized with the arc-melting technique. The compound crystallizes in a tetragonal CeCr$_2$Si$_2$C-type structure with cell parameters of $a$ = 4.2296 Åand $c$ = 5.3571 Å. An interlayer Si-Si covalent bonding is suggested by the atomic distance. The electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a Pauli-paramagnetic metal with dominant electron-electron scattering in the normal-state. Bulk superconductivity at 2.2 K is demonstrated with a dimensionless specific-heat jump of $ΔC/γ_{\rm n}T$ = 0.98. The superconducting parameters of the critical magnetic fields, coherence length, penetration depth, and superconducting energy gap are given.

Doping-induced superconductivity in the topological semimetal Mo5Si3

Chemical doping of topological materials may provide a possible route for realizing topological superconductivity. However, all such cases known so far are based on chalcogenides. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity induced by Re doping in the topological semimetal Mo$_{5}$Si$_{3}$ with a tetragonal structure. Partial substitution of Re for Mo in Mo$_{5-x}$Re$_{x}$Si$_{3}$ results in an anisotropic shrinkage of the unit cell up to the solubility limit of approximately $x$ = 2. Over a wide doping range (0.5 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 2), these silicides are found to be weakly coupled superconductors with a fully isotropic gap. $T_{\rm c}$ increases monotonically with $x$ from 1.67 K to 5.78 K, the latter of which is the highest among superconductors of the same structural type. This trend in $T_{\rm c}$ correlates well with the variation of the number of valence electrons, and is mainly ascribed to the enhancement of electron-phonon coupling. In addition, band structure calculations reveal that superconducting Mo$_{5-x}$Re$_{x}$Si$_{3}$ exhibits nontrivial band topology characterized by $Z_{2}$ invariants (1;000) or (1;111) depending on the Re doping level. Our results suggest that transition metal silicides are a fertile ground for the exploration of candidate topological superconductors.

T-square resistivity without Umklapp scattering in dilute metallic Bi$_2$O$_2$Se

The electrical resistivity of Fermi liquids (FLs) displays a quadratic temperature ($T$) dependence because of electron-electron (e-e) scattering. For such collisions to decay the charge current, there are two known mechanisms: inter-band scattering (identified by Baber) and Umklapp events. However, dilute metallic strontium titanate (STO) was found to display $T^2$ resistivity in absence of either of these two mechanisms. The presence of soft phonons and their possible role as scattering centers raised the suspicion that $T$-square resistivity in STO is not due to e-e scattering. Here, we present the case of Bi$_2$O$_2$Se, a layered semiconductor with hard phonons, which becomes a dilute metal with a small single-component Fermi surface upon doping. It displays $T$-square resistivity well below the degeneracy temperature where neither Umklapp nor interband scattering is conceivable. We observe a universal scaling between the prefactor of $T^2$ resistivity and the Fermi energy, which is an extension of the Kadowaki-Woods plot to dilute metals. Our results imply the absence of a satisfactory theoretical basis for the ubiquity of e-e driven $T$-square resistivity in Fermi liquids.

Superconductivity in hexagonal Nb-Mo-Ru-Rh-Pd high-entropy alloys

We report the superconducting properties of new hexagonal Nb$_{10+2x}$Mo$_{35-x}$Ru$_{35-x}$Rh$_{10}$Pd$_{10}$ high-entropy alloys (HEAs) (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 5). With increasing $x$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ shows a maximum of 6.19 K at $x$ = 2.5, while the zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) increases monotonically, reaching 8.3 T at $x$ = 5. For all $x$ values, the specific heat jump deviates from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schreiffer behavior. In addition, we show that $T_{\rm c}$ of these HEAs is not determined mainly by the density of states at the Fermi level and would be enhanced by lowering the valence electron concentration.

Consistency of semi-supervised learning algorithms on graphs: Probit and one-hot methods

Graph-based semi-supervised learning is the problem of propagating labels from a small number of labelled data points to a larger set of unlabelled data. This paper is concerned with the consistency of optimization-based techniques for such problems, in the limit where the labels have small noise and the underlying unlabelled data is well clustered. We study graph-based probit for binary classification, and a natural generalization of this method to multi-class classification using one-hot encoding. The resulting objective function to be optimized comprises the sum of a quadratic form defined through a rational function of the graph Laplacian, involving only the unlabelled data, and a fidelity term involving only the labelled data. The consistency analysis sheds light on the choice of the rational function defining the optimization.

Charge Transport in a Polar Metal

The fate of electric dipoles inside a Fermi sea is an old issue, yet poorly-explored. Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$TiO$_{3}$ hosts a robust but dilute ferroelectricity in a narrow ($0.002<x<0.02$) window of substitution. This insulator becomes metallic by removal of a tiny fraction of its oxygen atoms. Here, we present a detailed study of low-temperature charge transport in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$TiO$_{3-δ}$, documenting the evolution of resistivity with increasing carrier concentration ($n$). Below a threshold carrier concentration, $n^*(x)$, the polar structural phase transition has a clear signature in resistivity and Ca substitution significantly reduces the 2 K mobility at a given carrier density. For three different Ca concentrations, we find that the phase transition fades away when one mobile electron is introduced for about $7.9\pm0.6$ dipoles. This threshold corresponds to the expected peak in anti-ferroelectric coupling mediated by a diplolar counterpart of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Our results imply that the transition is driven by dipole-dipole interaction, even in presence of a dilute Fermi sea. Charge transport for $n < n^*(x)$ shows a non-monotonic temperature dependence, most probably caused by scattering off the transverse optical phonon mode. A quantitative explanation of charge transport in this polar metal remains a challenge to theory. For $n\geq n^*(x)$, resistivity follows a T-square behavior together with slight upturns (in both Ca-free and Ca-substituted samples). The latter are reminiscent of Kondo effect and most probably due to oxygen vacancies.

Metal-to-metal transition and heavy-electron state in Nd$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$

The trilayer nickelate Nd$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10-δ}$ ($δ\approx$ 0.15) was investigated by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity. The crystal structure data suggest a higher Ni valence in the inner perovskite-like layer. At ambient pressure the resistivity shows a jump at 162 K, indicating a metal-to-metal transition (MMT). The MMT is also characterized by a magnetic susceptibility drop, a sharp specific-heat peak, and an isotropic lattice contraction. Below $\sim$ 50 K, a resistivity upturn with a log$T$ dependence shows up, accompanying with a negative thermal expansion. External hydrostatic pressure suppresses the resistivity jump progressively, coincident with the diminution of the log$T$ behavior. The low-temperature electronic specific-heat coefficient is extracted to be $\sim$ 150 mJ K$^{-2}$ mol-fu$^{-1}$, equivalent to $\sim$ 50 mJ K$^{-2}$ mol-Ni$^{-1}$, indicating an unusual heavy-electron correlated state. The novel heavy-electron state as well as the logarithmic temperature dependence of resistivity is explained in terms of the Ni$^{3+}$ centered Kondo effect in the inner layer of the (NdNiO$_3$)$_3$ trilayers.
