Polymorphism and superconductivity in the V-Nb-Mo-Al-Ga high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are at the focus of current research for their diverse properties, including superconductivity and structural polymorphism. However, the polymorphic transition has been observed only in nonsuperconducting HEAs and mostly under high pressure. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity and temperature-driven polymorphism in the (V$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$)$_{3-x}$Mo$_{x}$Al$_{0.5}$Ga$_{0.5}$ (0.2 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 1.4) HEAs. It is found that the as-cast HEA is of a single body-centered cubic (bcc) structure for $x$ = 0.2 and a mixture of the bcc and A15 structures for higher $x$ values. Upon annealing, the bcc structure undergoes a polymorphic transformation to the A15 one and all HEAs exhibits bulk superconductivity. For $x$ = 0.2, whereas the bcc polymorph is not superconducting down to 1.8 K, the A15 polymorph has a superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of 10.2 K and an estimated zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) of 20.1 T, both of which are the highest among HEA superconductors. With increasing Mo content $x$, both $T_{\rm c}$ and $B_{\rm c2}$(0) of the A15-type HEAs decrease, yet the large ratio of $B_{\rm c2}$(0)/$T_{\rm c}$ signifies a disorder-induced enhancement of the upper critical field over a wide $x$ range. The decrease in $T_{\rm c}$ is attributed to the decrease in both the electronic specific-heat coefficient and electron-phonon coupling strength. Furthermore, the valence electron count dependence of $T_{\rm c}$, which is different from both the binary A15 and other structurally different HEA superconductors, suggests that $T_{\rm c}$ may be increased further by reducing the number of valence electrons. Our results not only uncover HEA superconductors of a new structural type, but also provide the first example of polymorphism dependent superconductivity in HEAs.

Electronic and Magnetic Structure of Infinite-layer $\textrm{NdNiO}_2$: Trace of Antiferromagnetic Metal

The recent discovery of Sr-doped infinite-layer nickelate $\textrm{NdNiO}_2$ [D. Li et al. Nature 572, 624 (2019)] offers an exciting platform for investigating unconventional superconductivity in nickelatebased compounds. In this work, we present a first-principles calculations for the electronic and magnetic properties of undoped parent $\textrm{NdNiO}_2$. Intriguingly, we found that: 1) the paramagnetic phase has complex Fermi pockets with 3D characters near the Fermi level; 2) by including electronelectron interactions, 3d-electrons of Ni tend to form $(π, π, π)$ antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures; 3) with moderate interaction strength, 5d-electrons of Nd contribute small Fermi pockets that could weaken the magnetic order akin to the self-doping effect. Our results provide a plausible interpretation for the experimentally observed resistivity minimum and Hall coefficient drop. Moreover, we elucidate that antiferromagnetic ordering in $\textrm{NdNiO}_2$ is relatively weak, arising from the small exchange coupling between 3d-electrons of Niand also hybridization with 5d-electrons of Nd.

Enhancement of the upper critical field in the cubic Laves-phase superconductor HfV$_{2}$ by Nb doping

We report the effect of Nb doping on the upper critical field of the cubic Laves-phase superconductor HfV$_{2}$ studied in a series of HfV$_{2-x}$Nb$_{x}$ samples with 0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.3 under pulsed fields up to 30 T. The undoped HfV$_{2}$ undergoes a martensitic structural transition around 110 K, and becomes superconducting below $T_{\rm c}$ = 9.4 K. Upon Nb doping, while the structural transition is suppressed for $x$ $\geq$ 0.1, a maximum in $T_{\rm c}$ of 10.1 K and zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) of 22.4 T is found at $x$ = 0.2, which is ascribed to an increase of the density of states at the Fermi level. For all samples, the temperature dependence of $B_{\rm c2}$ can be well described by the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theory that takes into account both the spin paramagnetic effect and spin orbit scattering. In addition, a comparison is made between the $B_{\rm c2}$ behavior of HfV$_{2-x}$Nb$_{x}$ and those of Nb-Ti and Nb$_{3}$Sn.

BaTh$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$(N$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$)$_2$: An Iron-Based Superconductor Stabilized by Inter-Block-Layer Charge Transfer

Recently, An electron-doped 12442-type iron-based superconductor BaTh$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$(N$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$)$_2$ has been successfully synthesized with high-temperature solid-state reactions on basis of a structural design. The inter-block-layer charge transfer between the constituent units of "BaFe$_2$As$_2$" and "ThFeAsN$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$" was found to be essential to stabilize the target compound. Dominant electron-type conduction and bulk superconducting transition at ~22 K were demonstrated.

Superconducting phase diagram and nontrivial band topology of structurally modulated Sn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$

We report the discovery of superconductivity in binary alloy Sn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ with $x$ in the range of 0.43 to 0.6, which possesses a modulated rhombohedral structure due to the incommensurate ordering of Sn and Sb layers along the $c$-axis. The specific heat measurements indicate a weakly coupled, fully gapped superconducting state in this homogeneity range with a maximum bulk $T_{\rm c}$ of 1.58 K at $x$ = 0.46, though the electronic specific heat and Hall coefficients remain nearly $x$-independent. The nonmonotonic dependence of the bulk $T_{\rm c}$ is discussed in relation to the effects of Sb-layer intercalation between the [Sn$_{4}$Sb$_{3}$] seven-layer lamellae that are the essential building block for superconductivity. On the other hand, a zero-resistivity transition is found to take place well above the bulk superconducting transition, and the corresponding $T_{\rm c}$ increases monotonically with $x$ from 2.06 K to 3.29 K. This contrast, together with the uniform elements distribution revealed by energy dispersive x-ray mapping, implies that the resistive transition is due to the strain effect at the grain boundary rather than the compositional inhomogeneity. The first-principles calculations on the representative composition Sn$_{4}$Sb$_{3}$ ($x$ = 0.43) indicate that it is topologically nontrivial similar to Sb, but with different Z$_{2}$ invariants (0;111). Our results not only identify a new superconducting region in the Sn-Sb phase diagram, but also provide a viable platform to study the interplay between structural modulation, nontrivial band topology and superconductivity.

Type-II superconductivity in W5Si3-type Nb5Sn2Al

We report the discovery of superconductivity in the ternary aluminide Nb$_{5}$Sn$_{2}$Al, which crystallizes in the W$_{5}$Si$_{3}$-type structure with one-dimensional Nb chains along the $c$-axis. It is found that the compound has a multiband nature and becomes a weakly coupled, type-II superconductor below 2.0 K. The bulk nature of superconductivity is confirmed by the specific heat jump, whose temperature dependence shows apparent deviation from a single isotropic gap behavior. The lower and upper critical fields are estimated to be 2.0 mT and 0.3 T, respectively. From these values, we derive the penetration depth, coherence length and Ginzburg-Landau parameter to be 516 nm, 32.8 nm and 15.6, respectively. By contrast, the isostructural compound Ti$_{5}$Sn$_{2}$Al dose not superconduct above 0.5 K. A comparison of these results with other W$_{5}$Si$_{3}$-type superconductors suggests that $T_{\rm c}$ of these compounds correlates with the average number of valence electrons per atom.

Supercondutivity in SnSb with natural superlattice structure

We report the results of electrical resistivity, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements on polycrystalline SnSb, whose structure consists of stacks of Sb bilayers and Sn4Sb3 septuple layers along the c-axis. The material is found to be a weakly coupled, fully gapped, type-II superconductor with a bulk Tc of 1.50 K, while showing a zero resistivity transition at a significantly higher temperature of 2.48 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient and upper critical field, obtained from specific heat measurements, are 2.29 mJ/mol K and 520 Oe, respectively. Compositional inhomogeneity and strain effect at the grain boundaries are proposed as possible origins for the difference in resistive and bulk superconducting transitions. In addition, a comparison with the rock-salt structure SnAs superconductor is presented. Our results provide the first clear evidence of bulk superconductivity in a natural superlattice derived from a topological semimetal.

Giant anisotropy in superconducting single crystals of CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ is a newly discovered iron-based superconductor with $T_\mathrm{c}\sim$ 30 K containing double Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating Ca$_2$F$_2$ spacer layers. Here we report the transport and magnetization measurements on CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ single crystals grown for the first time using the self flux of CsAs. We observed a huge resistivity anisotropy $ρ_c(T)/ρ_{ab}(T)$, which increases with decreasing temperature, from 750 at 300 K to 3150 at 32 K. The $ρ_c(T)$ data exhibit a non-metallic behavior above $\sim$140 K, suggesting an incoherent electronic state at high temperatures due to the dimension crossover. The superconducting onset transition temperature in $ρ_{ab}$ is 0.7 K higher than that in $ρ_c$, suggesting two-dimensional (2D) superconducting fluctuations. The lower and upper critical fields also show an exceptional anisotropy among iron-based superconductors. The $H_{c1}^\bot(T)$ data are well fitted using the model with two $s$-wave-like superconducting gaps, $Δ_1(0)=6.75$ meV and $Δ_2(0)=2.32$ meV. The inter-plane coherence length $ξ_c(0)$ is $3.6$ Å, remarkably smaller than the distance between conducting layers (8.6 Å), consolidating the 2D nature in the title material.

The Dominant Role of Critical Valence Fluctuations on High $T_{\rm c}$ Superconductivity in Heavy Fermions

Despite almost 40 years of research, the origin of heavy-fermion superconductivity is still strongly debated. Especially, the pressure-induced enhancement of superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ away from the magnetic breakdown is not sufficiently taken into consideration. As recently reported in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ and several related compounds, optimal superconductivity occurs at the pressure of a valence crossover, which arises from a virtual critical end point at negative temperature $T_{\rm cr}$. In this context, we did a meticulous analysis of a vast set of top-quality high-pressure electrical resistivity data of several Ce-based heavy fermion compounds. The key novelty is the salient correlation between the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ and the valence instability parameter $T_{\rm cr}$, which is in line with theory of enhanced valence fluctuations. Moreover, it is found that, in the pressure region of superconductivity, electrical resistivity is governed by the valence crossover, which most often manifests in scaling behavior. We develop the new idea that the optimum superconducting $T_{\rm c}$ of a given sample is mainly controlled by the compound's $T_{\rm cr}$ and limited by non-magnetic disorder. In this regard, the present study provides compelling evidence for the crucial role of critical valence fluctuations in the formation of Cooper pairs in Ce-based heavy fermion superconductors besides the contribution of spin fluctuations near magnetic quantum critical points, and corroborates a plausible superconducting mechanism in strongly correlated electron systems in general.

Magnetism and superconductivity in Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)As$_2$ ($x$ = 0, 0.04)

We report Eu-local-spin magnetism and Ni-doping-induced superconductivity (SC) in a 112-type ferroarsenide system Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)As$_2$. The non-doped EuFeAs$_2$ exhibits two primary magnetic transitions at $\sim$100 and $\sim$ 40 K, probably associated with a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition and an antiferromagnetic ordering in the Fe and Eu sublattices, respectively. Two additional successive transitions possibly related to Eu-spin modulations appear at 15.5 and 6.5 K. For the Ni-doped sample with $x$ = 0.04, the SDW transition disappears, and SC emerges at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 17.5 K. The Eu-spin ordering remains at around 40 K, followed by the possible reentrant magnetic modulations with enhanced spin canting. Consequently, SC coexists with a weak spontaneous magnetization below 6.2 K in Eu(Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$)As$_2$, which provides a complementary playground for the study of the interplay between SC and magnetism.

Heavy-Fermion Superconductivity in CeAg$_2$Si$_2$ --Interplay of Spin and Valence Fluctuations--

We present the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnet CeAg$_2$Si$_2$ established via resistivity and calorimetry measurements under quasi-hydrostatic conditions up to 22.5~GPa. With increasing pressure, the Néel temperature [$T_{\mathrm{N}}(p=0)=8.6$~K] slowly increases up to $T_{\mathrm{N}}=13.4$~K at 9.4~GPa and then vanishes abruptly at the magnetic critical pressure $p_{\mathrm{c}}\sim13$~GPa. For the first time, heavy fermion superconductivity is observed in CeAg$_2$Si$_2$ . Superconductivity emerges at $\sim 11$~GPa and persists over roughly 10~GPa. Partial- and bulk-transition temperatures are highest at $p=16$~GPa, with a maximal $T_{\mathrm{c}^{\rm bulk}}=1.25$~K. In the pressure region of superconductivity, Kondo and crystal-field splitting energies become comparable and resistivity exhibits clear signatures of a Ce-ion valence crossover. The crossover line is located at a rapid collapse in resistivity as function of pressure and extrapolates to a valence transition critical endpoint at critical pressure and temperature of $p_{\rm cr}\sim 17$~GPa and $T_{\rm cr}\sim-13~K$, respectively. Both critical spin and valence fluctuations may build up superconductivity in CeAg$_2$Si$_2$.

Evidence of Spontaneous Vortex Ground State in An Iron-Based Ferromagnetic Superconductor

Spontaneous vortex phase (SVP) is an exotic quantum matter in which quantized superconducting vortices form in the absence of external magnetic field. Although being predicted theoretically nearly 40 years ago, its rigorous experimental verification still appears to be lacking. Here we present low-field magnetic measurements on single crystals of the iron-based ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.91}$Rh$_{0.09}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ which undergoes a superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{sc}$ = 19.6 K followed by a magnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{m}$ = 16.8 K. We observe a characteristic first-order transition from a Meissner state within $T_\mathrm{m}<T<T_\mathrm{sc}$ to an SVP below $T_\mathrm{m}$, under a magnetic field approaching zero. Additional isothermal magnetization and ac magnetization measurements at $T\ll T_\mathrm{sc}$ confirm that the system is intrinsically in a spontaneous-vortex ground state. The unambiguous demonstration of SVP in the title material lays a solid foundation for future imaging and spectroscopic studies on this intriguing quantum matter.

High-pressure study of the ground- and superconducting-state properties of CeAu$_2$Si$_2$

The pressure-temperature-phase diagram of the new heavy-fermion superconductor CeAu$_2$Si$_2$ is markedly different from those studied previously. Indeed, superconductivity emerges, not on the verge, but deep inside the magnetic phase. In this context, we have carried out ac-calorimetry, resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements on a CeAu$_2$Si$_2$-single crystal under high-pressure. The principal novelties of this experiment are the observation of a new transition line, presumably a magnetic structure rearrangement at $T_{\mathrm{M}}^{\mathrm{mod}}$ inside the antiferromagnetic phase, and the occurrence of quantum critical behavior in resistivity linked to superconductivity. Strong non-Fermi-liquid behavior is observed around the maximum of superconductivity and enhanced scattering rates are observed close to both the emergence and the maximum of superconductivity. Intriguingly, $T_{\mathrm{M}}^{\mathrm{mod}}$ almost coincides with the onset of the superconducting transition over a broad pressure range, where mysteriously Tc increases with the strengthening of magnetism. A comparison of the features in CeAu$_2$Si$_2$ and its parent compounds CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$ plotted as function of the unit-cell volume leads us to promote that critical fluctuations of a valence crossover play a crucial role in the superconducting paring mechanism. Our study reveals new intriguing features of magnetism and illustrates a complex interplay between magnetism, quantum criticality and superconductivity.

q-deformations of statistical mechanical systems and motives over finite fields

We consider q-deformations of Witt rings, based on geometric operations on zeta functions of motives over finite fields, and we use these deformations to construct q-analogs of the Bost-Connes quantum statistical mechanical system. We show that the q-deformations obtained in this way can be related to Habiro ring constructions of analytic functions over the field with one element and to categorifications of Bost-Connes systems.

Instantaneous Photon Drag Currents in Topological Insulators

Topological insulator materials have been extensively studied in the field of condensed matter physics because nontrivial topology in the electronic state gives rise to a novel spin-polarized Dirac dispersion on the surface. To describe the electrodynamics of topological insulators, it is crucial to understand coherent and incoherent dynamics of carriers both in bulk and surface states. We applied terahertz emission spectroscopy to an intrinsic three-dimensional topological insulator material, $Bi_{1.5} Sb_{0.5} Te_{1.7} Se_{1.3}$, to elucidate ultrafast photo-induced carrier dynamics. The emitted terahertz electric field strongly depended on the polarization and incident angle of the excitation pulse. A three-fold rotational symmetry was clearly confirmed in the dependence of terahertz emissions on the azimuthal angle. The origin of terahertz emissions should be instantaneous photon drag currents induced by the excitation of femtosecond pulses.

High pressure investigation of superconducting signatures in CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ : ac- magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity, resistivity and thermopower

Taking advantage of a novel multiprobe setup we have measured, on a unique sample, the ac-magnetic susceptibility, the resistivity, the ac-specific heat and the thermopower of the superconductor heavy fermion CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under pressure up to 5.1 GPa. At the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, the Meissner signal corresponds to that expected for the sample volume and coincides with the specific heat jump and the resistive transition completion temperatures. Differing from previous observations, here the susceptibility measurements did not reveal any anomaly in the vicinity of the resistive transition onset.

Anomalous metallic state above the upper critical field of the conventional three-dimensional superconductor AgSnSe2 with strong intrinsic disorder

We report superconducting properties of AgSnSe2 which is a conventional type-II superconductor in the very dirty limit due to intrinsically strong electron scatterings. While this material is an isotropic three-dimensional (3D) superconductor with a not-so-short coherence length where strong vortex fluctuations are NOT expected, we found that the magnetic-field-induced resistive transition at fixed temperatures becomes increasingly broader toward zero temperature and, surprisingly, that this broadened transition is taking place largely ABOVE the upper critical field determined thermodynamically from the specific heat. This result points to the existence of an anomalous metallic state possibly caused by quantum phase fluctuations in a strongly-disordered 3D superconductor.

Tunability of the k-space Location of the Dirac Cones in the Topological Crystalline Insulator Pb1-xSnxTe

We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the topological crystalline insulator (TCI) Pb1-xSnxTe to elucidate the evolution of its electronic states across the topological phase transition. As previously reported, the band structure of SnTe (x = 1.0) measured on the (001) surface possesses a pair of Dirac-cone surface states located symmetrically across the Xbar point in the (110) mirror plane. Upon approaching the topological phase transition into the trivial phase at x_c ~ 0.25, we discovered that Dirac cones gradually move toward the Xbar point with its spectral weight gradually reduced with decreasing x. In samples with x <= 0.2, the Dirac-cone surface state is completely gone, confirming the occurrence of the topological phase transition. Also, the evolution of the valence band feature is found to be consistent with the bulk band inversion taking place at x_c. The tunability of the location of the Dirac cones in the Brillouin zone would be useful for applications requiring Fermi-surface matching with other materials, such as spin injection.
