Magnetic properties of pressurized CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ calculated by using a hybrid functional

Based on the hybrid functional, we find that at 0 GPa, the pristine CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ has local magnetic moment of 0.85 $μ_B$ /unit cell, which is suppressed at pressure of 2.5 GPa resulting in a spin-crossover. Since the ground sate of CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ with charge density wave (CDW) distortion is non-magnetic state, the local magnetic moment of pristine CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ will be suppressed by temperature-induced CDW transition at 94 K. The schematic evolution of magnetic moments as functions of pressure and temperature are presented. At low temperature, CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ is a rare example of materials hosting pressureinduced local magnetic moment, and we suggeste that the effects of local magnetic moments should be considered for understanding its properties.

SAGE : A Monte Carlo Simulation Framework for Experiments with Germanium Detectors

A Geant4-based simulation framework for rare event searching experiments with germanium detectors named SAGE is presented with details. It is designed for simulating, assessing background distribution, and investigating the response of the germanium detectors. The SAGE framework incorporates its experiment-specific geometries and custom attributes, including the event generators, physics lists and output format, to satisfy various simulation objectives. Its docker image has been prepared for virtualizing and distributing the SAGE framework. Deployment of a Geant4-based simulation will be convenient under this docker image. The implemented geometries include p-type point contact and broad energy germanium detectors with environmental surroundings, and these hierarchical geometries can be easily extended. Users select these custom attributes via the JSON configuration files. The aforementioned attributes satisfy the simulation demands and make SAGE a generic and powerful simulation framework for the CDEX experiment.

GRB 210121A: A Typical Fireball Burst Detected by Two Small Missions

The Chinese CubeSat Mission, Gamma Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID), recently detected its first gamma-ray burst, GRB 210121A, which was jointly observed by the Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM). This burst is confirmed by several other missions, including \fermi and \textit{Insight}-HXMT. We combined multi-mission observational data and performed a comprehensive analysis of the burst's temporal and spectral properties. Our results show that the burst is relatively special in its high peak energy, thermal-like low energy indices, and large fluence. By putting it to the $E_{\rm p}$-$E_{\rmγ, iso}$ relation diagram with assumed distance, we found this burst can be constrained at the redshift range of [0.3,3.0]. The thermal spectral component is also confirmed by the direct fit of the physical models to the observed spectra. Interestingly, the physical photosphere model also constrained a redshift of $z\sim$ 0.3 for this burst, which help us to identify a host galaxy candidate at such a distance within the location error box. Assuming the host galaxy is real, we found the burst can be best explained by the photosphere emission of a typical fireball with an initial radius of $r_0\sim$ 3.2 $\times 10^7$ cm.

Compact CubeSat Gamma-Ray Detector for GRID Mission

Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID) mission is a student project designed to use multiple gamma-ray detectors carried by nanosatellites (CubeSats), forming a full-time all-sky gamma-ray detection network that monitors the transient gamma-ray sky in the multi-messenger astronomy era. A compact CubeSat gamma-ray detector, including its hardware and firmware, was designed and implemented for the mission. The detector employs four Gd2Al2Ga3O12 : Ce (GAGG:Ce) scintillators coupled with four silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays to achieve a high gamma-ray detection efficiency between 10 keV and 2 MeV with low power and small dimensions. The first detector designed by the undergraduate student team onboard a commercial CubeSat was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit on October 29, 2018. The detector was in a normal observation state and accumulated data for approximately one month after on-orbit functional and performance tests, which were conducted in 2019.

A marine radioisotope gamma-ray spectrum analysis method based on Monte Carlo simulation and MLP neural network

The monitoring of Cs-137 in seawater using scintillation detector relies on the spectrum analysis method to extract the Cs-137 concentration. And when in poor statistic situation, the calculation result of the traditional net peak area (NPA) method has a large uncertainty. We present a machine learning based method to better analyze the gamma-ray spectrum with low Cs-137 concentration. We apply multilayer perceptron (MLP) to analyze the 662 keV full energy peak of Cs-137 in the seawater spectrum. And the MLP can be trained with a few measured background spectrums by combining the simulated Cs-137 signal with measured background spectrums. Thus, it can save the time of preparing and measuring the standard samples for generating the training dataset. To validate the MLP-based method, we use Geant4 and background gamma-ray spectrums measured by a seaborne monitoring device to generate an independent test dataset to test the result by our method and the traditional NPA method. We find that the MLP-based method achieves a root mean squared error of 0.159, 2.3 times lower than that of the traditional net peak area method, indicating the MLP-based method improves the precision of Cs-137 concentration calculation

Parallel frequency function-deep neural network for efficient complex broadband signal approximation

A neural network is essentially a high-dimensional complex mapping model by adjusting network weights for feature fitting. However, the spectral bias in network training leads to unbearable training epochs for fitting the high-frequency components in broadband signals. To improve the fitting efficiency of high-frequency components, the PhaseDNN was proposed recently by combining complex frequency band extraction and frequency shift techniques [Cai et al. SIAM J. SCI. COMPUT. 42, A3285 (2020)]. Our paper is devoted to an alternative candidate for fitting complex signals with high-frequency components. Here, a parallel frequency function-deep neural network (PFF-DNN) is proposed to suppress computational overhead while ensuring fitting accuracy by utilizing fast Fourier analysis of broadband signals and the spectral bias nature of neural networks. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed PFF-DNN method are verified based on detailed numerical experiments for six typical broadband signals.

Study on cosmogenic activation in copper for rare event search experiments

The rare event search experiments using germanium detectors are performed in the underground laboratories to prevent cosmic rays. However, the cosmogenic activation of the cupreous detector components on the ground will generate long half-life radioisotopes and contribute continually to the expected background level. We present a study on the cosmogenic activation of copper after 504 days of exposure at an altitude of 2469.4 m outside the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). The specific activities of the cosmogenic nuclides produced in the copper bricks were measured using a low background germanium gamma-ray spectrometer at CJPL. The production rates at sea level, in units of nuclei/kg/day, are 18.6 \pm 2.0 for Mn-54, 9.9 \pm 1.3 for Co-56, 48.3 \pm 5.5 for Co-57, 51.8 \pm 2.5 for Co-58 and 39.7 \pm 5.7 for Co-60, respectively. Given the expected exposure history of the germanium detectors, a Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to assess the cosmogenic background contributions of the detectors' cupreous components.

Modeling the in-orbit background of PolarLight

PolarLight is a gas pixel X-ray polarimeter mounted on a CubeSat, which was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit in October 2018. We build a mass model of the whole CubeSat with the Geant4 toolkit to simulate the background induced by the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) and high energy charged particles in the orbit. The simulated energy spectra and morphologies of event images both suggest that the measured background with PolarLight is dominated by high energy electrons, with a minor contribution from protons and the CXB. The simulation reveals that, in the energy range of 2-8 keV, there are roughly 28% of the background events are caused by energy deposit from a secondary electron with an energy of a few keV, in a physical process identical to the detection of X-rays. Thus, this fraction of background cannot be discriminated from X-ray events. The background distribution is uneven on the detector plane, with an enhancement near the edges. The edge effect is because high energy electrons tend to produce long tracks, which are discarded by the readout electronics unless they have partial energy deposits near the edges. The internal background rate is expected to be around 6 x 10^-3 counts/s/cm2 in 2-8 keV if an effective particle discrimination algorithm can be applied. This indicates that the internal background should be negligible for future focusing X-ray polarimeters with a focal size in the order of mm.

Noise Is Useful: Exploiting Data Diversity for Edge Intelligence

Edge intelligence requires to fast access distributed data samples generated by edge devices. The challenge is using limited radio resource to acquire massive data samples for training machine learning models at edge server. In this article, we propose a new communication-efficient edge intelligence scheme where the most useful data samples are selected to train the model. Here the usefulness or values of data samples is measured by data diversity which is defined as the difference between data samples. We derive a close-form expression of data diversity that combines data informativeness and channel quality. Then a joint data-and-channel diversity aware multiuser scheduling algorithm is proposed. We find that noise is useful for enhancing data diversity under some conditions.

Ionization-density-dependent Scintillation Pulse Shape and Mechanism of Luminescence Quenching in LaBr3:Ce

Pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) is usually achieved using the different fast and slow decay components of inorganic scintillators, such as BaF2, CsI:Tl, etc. However, LaBr3:Ce is considered to not possess different components at room temperature, but has been proved to have the capability of discriminating γ and α events using fast digitizers. In this paper, ionization-density-dependent transport and rate equations are used to quantitatively model the competing processes in a particle track. With one parameter set, the model reproduces the nonproportionality response of electrons or α particles, and explains the measured α and γ pulse-shape difference well. In particular, the nonlinear quenching of excited dopant ions, Ce3+, is confirmed herein to mainly contribute observable ionization α and γ pulse-shape differences. Further study of the luminescence quenching can also help to better understand the fundamental physics of nonlinear quenching and thus improve the crystal engineering. Moreover, based on the mechanism of dopant quenching, the ionization-density-dependent pulse-shape differences in other fast single-decay-component inorganic scintillators, such as lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate, Lu2(1-x)Y2xSiO5:Ce (LYSO) and CeBr3, are also predicted and verified with experiments.

Preliminary Design of a FADC Readout System for the Alpha/Beta Discrimination in a Large Area Plastic Scintillation Detector

This paper describes a FADC Readout system developed for the tap water $α/β$ dose monitoring system which is based on EJ444 phoswich scintillation detector and wavelength shifting fiber readout. The Readout system contains dual sampling channels that can supply sampling rate up to 1 GSPS, 14-Bit vertical resolution and adequate effective number of bits (9.7 Bits at 10 MHz), which is optimum for the discrimination of the minimal difference between alpha/beta signals. Moreover, the system is based on a ZYNQ SoC which provides high data throughput speed, low latency and excellent flexibility. As for the discrimination algorithms, a simple least-square classification method is used to discriminate the $α/β$ signals and shows high discrimination capability. Besides, the front-end electronics and high voltage supply modules are also briefly introduced in the paper.

Spin-crossover induced ferromagnetism and layer stacking-order change in pressurized 2D antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$

High-pressure properties of MnPS$_3$ are investigated by using the hybrid functional, we report a spin-crossover pressure of 35 GPa consisting with experimental observation (30 GPa), less than half of existing report (63 GPa) using the Hubbard U correction. Interestingly, a spin-crossover induced antiferromagnetism-to-ferromagnetism transition combined with stacking-order change from monoclinic to rhombohedral are founded, and the ferromagnetism origins from the partially occupied $t_{2g}$ orbitals. Different from previous understanding, the Mott metal-insulator transition of MnPS$_3$ does not occur simultaneously with the spin-crossover but in pressurized low-spin phase.

An Efficient Gradient Projection Method for Structural Topology Optimization

This paper presents an efficient gradient projection-based method for structural topological optimization problems characterized by a nonlinear objective function which is minimized over a feasible region defined by bilateral bounds and a single linear equality constraint. The specialty of the constraints type, as well as heuristic engineering experiences are exploited to improve the scaling scheme, projection, and searching step. In detail, gradient clipping and a modified projection of searching direction under certain condition are utilized to facilitate the efficiency of the proposed method. Besides, an analytical solution is proposed to approximate this projection with negligible computation and memory costs. Furthermore, the calculation of searching steps is largely simplified. Benchmark problems, including the MBB, the force inverter mechanism, and the 3D cantilever beam are used to validate the effectiveness of the method. The proposed method is implemented in MATLAB which is open-sourced for educational usage.

Data-Importance Aware Radio Resource Allocation: Wireless Communication Helps Machine Learning

The rich mobile data and edge computing enabled wireless networks motivate to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) at network edge, known as \emph{edge AI}, which integrates wireless communication and machine learning. In communication, data bits are equally important, while in machine learning some data bits are more important. Therefore we can allocate more radio resources to the more important data and allocate less radio resources to the less important data, so as to efficiently utilize the limited radio resources. To this end, how to define "more or less important" of data is the key problem. In this article, we propose two importance criteria to differentiate data's importance based on their effects on machine learning, one for centralized edge machine learning and the other for distributed edge machine learning. Then, the corresponding radio resource allocation schemes are proposed to improve performance of machine learning. Extensive experiments are conducted for verifying the effectiveness of the proposed data-importance aware radio resource allocation schemes.

Performance of Linear Classification Algorithms on alpha/gamma Discrimination for LaBr3:Ce Scintillation Detectors with Various Pulse Digitizer Properties

With the development of high-speed readout electronics, the digital pulse shape discrimination (PSD) methods have attracted the attention of more researchers, especially in the field of high energy physics and neutron detection. How to choose a PSD algorithm and corresponding data acquisition system (DAQ) naturally becomes a critical problem to settle down for the detection system designers. In this paper, the relationship between the classification performance of different PSD algorithms and digitizers' sampling properties (including sampling rate and the effective number of bits) has been researched based on $\mathrm{LaBr_3}$:Ce scintillation detectors. A self-developed integrated digitizer configured with five different ADCs and a WavePro 404HD oscilloscope were deployed to digitize the waveforms from $\mathrm{LaBr_3}$:Ce scintillators. Moreover, three PSD methods, charge comparison method (CCM), least square for classification method (LS) and Fisher's linear discriminant analysis (LDA), based on linear model were applied to discriminate the alpha signals from the intrinsic isotope $^{227}$Ac. With the LS method and a 125 MSPS 14-Bit ADC, the FoM value was 1.424$\pm$0.042, which is similar to the result from LDA but 31\% better than the result of CCM. The discrimination results showed that the performances of LS and LDA are less affected by the sampling rate with respect to the CCM method, which reflects in a better PSD capability. The results of this paper can help the developers of detector systems to make a trade-off among sampling properties, desirable discrimination results and the cost of systems.

Results of direct dark matter detection with CDEX experiment at CJPL

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX), located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) whose overburden is about 2400m rock, aims at direct searches of light Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). A single-element 994-gram p-type point contact (PPC) germanium detector (CDEX-1B) runs inside a solid passive shielding system. To achieve lower background, a prototype 10kg PPC germanium detector array (CDEX-10), consisting of three detector strings with three germanium crystals each, is directly immersed in the liquid nitrogen. With the energy threshold of 160eV, the limits on WIMP-nucleus scattering are set by energy spectra and annual modulation analysis, respectively. Incorporating Migdal effect, the data of CDEX-1B are re-analyzed to search sub-GeV WIMPs. Finally, the future plan of CDEX experiment in CJPL-II is introduced.

Optimization of Energy Resolution and Pulse Shape Discrimination for a CLYC Detector with Integrated Digitizers

Sufficient current pulse information of nuclear radiation detectors can be retained by direct waveform digitization owing to the improvement of digitizer's performance. In many circumstances, reasonable cost and power consumption are on demand while the energy resolution and PSD performance should be ensured simultaneously for detectors. This paper will quantitatively analyse the influence of vertical resolution and sampling rate of digitizers on the energy resolution and PSD performance. The energy resolution and PSD performance can be generally optimized by improving the sampling rate and ENOB (effective number of bits) of digitizers. Several integrated digitizers, with sampling rates varying from 100 MSPS to 500 MSPS and vertical resolution ranging from 12-Bit to 16-Bit, were designed and integrated with a CLYC detector for verifications. Experimental results show good accordance with theoretical calculations. The conclusion can give guidance to designs of digitizes for similar applications in need of optimizing the energy resolution and PSD performance, and help to choose proper digitizers for different requirements.
