Bias induced spin state transition mediated by electron excitations

Recent experiments reported that spin-state transitions were realized by applying bias voltages. But these bias-induced spin state transitions (BISSTs) are not fully understood, especially the mechanism. It is well known that the metal-to-ligand charge transfer excitation (MLCT) and the metal-centered excitation (MC) activated by light radiation can induce the transition from low spin (LS) to high spin (HS) and that from HS to LS. Moreover, electronic excitations are accessible by inelastic cotunneling in molecular junctions with bias voltages applied. Based on these two experimental facts, we propose the MLCT basically leads to the BISST from LS to HS, and the MC results in the BISST from HS to LS. The rationality of the mechanism is demonstrated by comparing first-principles results and experimental observations. The calculated voltage threshold for activating the MLCT (MC) is close to the experimental voltage for observing the BISST from LS to HS (from HS to LS). The activation of MLCT (MC) depends on the bias polarity, which can explain the bias-polarity dependence of BISST in the experiment. Our study is important for further design of molecular spintronic devices working on spin state transition.

The stability of graphene based Möbius strip with vacancy at high temperature

By using the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, structural and electronic properties of mono-vacancy (MV) defect in Möbius strip formed from graphene are investigated. Two kinds of MV are observed depending on the local structures around defects. At static condition, in the curved areas of Möbius strip, MV has the configuration of one pentagon and one nonagon ring (59-type), which is similar to that of carbon nanotubes and graphene. the most stable MV appear in the twisted areas and has a profile of two pentagon and two hexagon rings (5566-type) with one sp3 hybridized carbon at the central site. While DFT-MD simulations prove that the 5566-type MV is an unstable configuration at room temperature and will transform into a 59-type MV. Additionally, the melting behavior of graphene based Möbius strips are investigated through empirical potential MD simulations, and we find that their melting temperature is about 2750 K, which is lower than that of carbon nanotubes and graphene.

Measurements of Radon Concentrations Using CR-39 Detectors in China JinPing Underground Laboratory (2015-2016)

Radon background is one of the most critical influences on the ultra-low background and rare-event physical experiments in underground laboratories. To conduct a comprehensive investigation of the radon concentrations in China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL), long-term cumulative measurements were carried out using time-integrated passive radon dosimeters containing CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors at four sites of CJPL-I. The measurements lasted from May 30,2015 to March 16,2016, a total of 290 days, and the total effective measurement time is 6,953 hours. In the main experiment hall equipped with the ventilation system, the average annual radon concentrations were (55+/-7) Bq m^-3, (58+/-10) Bq^m-3and (53+/-9) Bq m^-3 in three locations respectively. In the storage tunnel without any radon reduction facility, the average annual radon concentrations increased to (345+/-15) Bq m^-3, reflecting the original average annual radon concentration levels in the underground laboratory. Compared with the measured results in the period from 2010 to 2011, the average radon concentration in the main experimental hall was reduced from (86+/-25) Bq m^-3 to (58+/-10) Bq m^-3 due to the well-running ventilation system. Compared with other international underground laboratories, radon concentrations in CJPL-I were at an intermediate level and can meet the demand for low background and rare-event physical experiments.

Assay of low-background stainless steel by smelting for the neutrino experiment at Jinping

To ensure compliance with the experimental requirement for ultra-low background, in this study the radioactivity of stainless steels manufactured by smelting is thoroughly investigated. Raw materials, stage samples, and commercial samples are investigated by glow discharge mass spectrometry (GDMS) and/or with high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe) at both the ground level and/or the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Custom-made stainless steel samples are found to have radioactivity levels comparable to those in other low-background experiments. The comprehensive results regarding the radioactivity level in materials to be used in the proposed Jinping Neutrino Experiment are reported.

Robust and Pristine Top ological Dirac Semimetal Phase in Pressured Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorous

Very recently, in spite of various efforts in searching for two dimensional topological Dirac semimetals (2D TDSMs) in phosphorene, there remains a lack of experimentally efficient way to activate such phase transition and the underlying mechanism for the topological phase acquisition is still controversial. Here, from first-principles calculations in combination with a band-sorting technique based on k.p theory, a layer-pressure topological phase diagram is obtained and some of the controversies are clarified. We demonstrate that, compared with tuning by external electric-fields, strain or doping by adsorption, hydrostatic pressure can be an experimentally more feasible way to activate the topological phase transition for 2D TDSM acquisition in phosphorene. More importantly, the resultant TDSM state is a pristine phase possessing a single pair of symmetry-protected Dirac cones right at the Fermi level, in startling contrast to the pressured bulk black phosphorous where only a carrier-mixed Dirac state can be obtained. We corroborate that the Dirac points are robust under external perturbation as long as the glide-plane symmetry preserves. Our findings provide a means to realize 2D pristine TDSM in a more achievable manner, which could be crucial in the realization of controllable TDSM states in phosphorene and related 2D materials.

Gross beta determination using a scintillating fiber array detector for drinking water

A scintillating fiber array measurement system for gross beta is developed to achieve real-time monitoring of radioactivity in drinking water. The detector consists of 1,096 scintillating fibers, both sides of the fibers connect to a photomultiplier tube, and they are placed in a stainless steel tank. The detector parameters of working voltage, background counting rate and stability of the detector were tested, and the detection efficiency was calibrated using a standard solution of potassium chloride. Through experiment, the background counting rate of the detector is 38.31 cps and the detection efficiency for $β$ particles is 0.37 cps per Bq per liter; the detector can reach its detection limit of 1.0 Bq per liter for $β$ particles within 100 minutes without pre-concentration.

Chemical reaction directed oriented attachment: from precursor particles to new substances

The oriented attachment (OA) of nanoparticles is an important mechanism for the synthesis of the crystals of inorganic functional materials, and the formation of natural minerals. For years it has been generally acknowledged that OA is a physical process, i.e., particle alignments and interface fusion via mass diffusion, not involving the formation of new substances. Hence, the obtained crystals maintain identical crystallographic structures and chemical constituents to those of the precursor particles. Here we report a chemical reaction directed OA growth, through which Y2(CO3)3.2H2O nanoparticles are converted to single-crystalline double-carbonates (e.g., NaY(CO3)2.6H2O). The dominant role of OA growth is supported by our first-principles calculations. Such a new OA mechanism enriches the aggregation-based crystal growth theory.

single-electron events and 0νββ events in CdZnTe: A Monte Carlo simulation study

In neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay experiments, the diversity of topological signatures of different particles provides an important tool to distinguish double beta events from background events and reduce background rates. Aiming at suppressing the single-electron backgrounds which are most challenging, several groups have established Monte Carlo simulation packages to study the topological characteristics of single-electron events and 0νββ events and develop methods to differentiate them. In this paper, applying the knowledge of graph theory, a new topological signature called REF track (Refined Energy-Filtered track) is proposed and proven to be an accurate approximation of the real particle trajectory. Based on the analysis of the energy depositions along the REF track of single-electron events and 0νββ events, the REF energy deposition models for both events are proposed to indicate the significant differences between them. With these differences, this paper presents a new discrimination method, which, in the Monte Carlo simulation, achieved a single-electron rejection factor of 93.8+-0.3 (stat.)% as well as a 0νββ efficiency of 85.6+-0.4 (stat.)% with optimized parameters in CdZnTe.

Electron Track Reconstruction and Improved Modulation for Photoelectric X-ray Polarimetry

The key to photoelectric X-ray polarimetry is the determination of the emission direction of photoelectrons. Because of the low mass of an electron, the ionisation trajectory is not straight and the useful information needed for polarimetry is stored mostly in the initial part of the track where less energy is deposited. We present a new algorithm, based on the shortest path problem in graph theory, to reconstruct the 2D electron track from the measured image that is blurred due to transversal diffusion along drift and multiplication in the gas chamber. Compared with previous methods based on moment analysis, this algorithm allows us to identify the photoelectric interaction point more accurately and precisely for complicated tracks resulting from high energy photons or low pressure chambers. This leads to a better position resolution and a higher degree of modulation toward high energy X-rays. The new algorithm is justified using simulations and measurements with the gas pixel detector (GPD), and it should also work for other polarimetric techniques such as a time projection chamber (TPC). As the improvement is restricted in the high energy band, this new algorithm shows limited improvement for the sensitivity of GPD polarimeters, but it may have a larger potential for low-pressure TPC polarimeters.

The optical absorption spectra of V centers in deformed MgO under pressure

The electronic structure and optical absorption spectrum of V^{0} and V^{-} center in MgO are investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. It is demonstrated that the configuration with distortion is energetically favorable in PBE0 functional. The six O atoms around Mg vacancy are non-equivalent due to the distortion. The defect states localized in the band gap are obtained by applying hybrid functional calculations, which is very important for optical properties. At ambient condition, the absorption peak at ~2.5 and ~2.6 eV is assigned to V^{0} and V^{-} center, respectively. With increasing pressure, the absorption peak shows blue shift. The trend is consistent with the experimental observation.

The first result on 76Ge neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment

We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. The wideband spectrum from 500 keV to 3 MeV was obtained and the average event rate at the 2.039 MeV energy range is about 0.012 count per keV per kg per day. The half-life of Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay has been derived based on this result as: T 1/2 > 6.4*10^22 yr (90% C.L.). An upper limit on the effective Majorana-neutrino mass of 5.0 eV has been achieved. The possible methods to further decrease the background level have been discussed and will be pursued in the next stage of CDEX experiment.

Compton suppression in BEGe detectors by digital pulse shape analysis

A new method of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) for BEGe detectors is developed to suppress Compton-continuum by digital pulse shape analysis (PSA), which helps reduce the Compton background level in gamma ray spectrometry. A decision parameter related to the rise time of a pulse shape was presented. The method was verified by experiments using 60Co and 137Cs sources. The result indicated that the 60Co Peak to Compton ratio and the Cs-Peak to Co-Compton ratio could be improved by more than two and three times, respectively.

Optimization of an underwater in-situ LaBr3:Ce spectrometer with energy self-calibration and efficiency calibration

An underwater in situ gamma ray spectrometer based on LaBr3 was developed and optimized to monitor marine radioactivity. The intrinsic background mainly from La138 and Ac227 of LaBr3 was well determined by low background measurement and pulse shape discrimination method. A method of self-calibration using three internal contaminant peaks was proposed to eliminate the peak shift during long term monitoring. With experiments under different temperatures, the method was proved to be helpful for maintaining long term stability. To monitor the marine radioactivity, the spectrometer efficiency was calculated via water tank experiment as well as Monte Carlo simulation.

Characterization study of a broad-energy germanium detector at CJPL

The ability of background discrimination using pulse shape discrimination (PSD) in broad-energy germanium (BEGe) detectors makes them as competitive candidates for neutrinoless double beta decay (0ν\b{eta}\b{eta}) experiments. The measurements of key parameters for detector modeling in a commercial p-type BEGe detector are presented in this paper. Point-like sources were used to investigate the energy resolution and linearity of the detector. A cylindrical volume source was used for the efficiency calibration. With an assembled device for source positioning, a collimated 133Ba point-like source was used to scan the detector and investigate the active volume. A point-like source of 241Am was used to measure the dead layer thicknesses, which are approximately 0.17 mm on the front and 1.18 mm on the side. The described characterization method will play an important role in the 0ν\b{eta}\b{eta} experiments with BEGe detectors at China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL) in the future.

Mathematical modelling and study of the encoding readout scheme for position sensitive detectors

Encoding readout methods based on different schemes have been successfully developed and tested with different types of position-sensitive detectors with strip-readout structures. However, how to construct an encoding scheme in a more general and systematic way is still under study. In this paper, we present a graph model for the encoding scheme. With this model, encoding schemes can be studied in a more systematic way. It is shown that by using an encoding readout method, a maximum of n(n-1)/2+1 strips can be processed with n channels if n is odd, while a maximum of (n(n-2))/2+2 strips can be processed with n channels if n is even. Furthermore, based on the model, the encoding scheme construction problem can be translated into a problem in graph theory, the aim of which is to construct an Eulerian trail such that the length of the shortest subcycle is as long as possible. A more general approach to constructing the encoding scheme is found by solving the associated mathematical problem. In addition, an encoding scheme prototype has been constructed, and verified with MRPC detectors.
