Quantitative Analysis and Efficiency Study of PSD Methods for a LaBr3:Ce Detector

The LaBr3:Ce scintillator has been widely studied for nuclear spectroscopy because of its optimal energy resolution (<3%@ 662 keV) and time resolution (~300 ps). Despite these promising properties, the intrinsic radiation background of LaBr3:Ce is a critical issue, and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) has been shown to be an efficient potential method to suppress the alpha background from the 227Ac. In this paper, the charge comparison method (CCM) for alpha and gamma discrimination in LaBr3:Ce is quantitatively analysed and compared with two other typical PSD methods using digital pulse processing. The algorithm parameters and discrimination efficiency are calculated for each method. Moreover, for the CCM, the correlation between the CCM feature value distribution and the total charge (energy) is studied, and a fitting equation for the correlation is inferred and experimentally verified. Using the equations, an energy-dependent threshold can be chosen to optimize the discrimination efficiency. Additionally, the experimental results show a potential application in low-activity high-energy γ measurement by suppressing the alpha background.

Induced effects by the substitution of Zn in Cu2ZnSnX4 (X = S and Se)

Based on the density functional theory with hybrid functional approach, we have studied the structural and thermodynamic stabilities of Cu2MSnX4 (M = Zn, Mg, and Ca; X = S and Se) alloy, and have further investigated the electronic and optical properties of stable Cu2MgSnS4 and Cu2MgSnSe4 phases. Thermal stability analysis indicates that Cu2MgSnS4 and Cu2MgSnSe4 are thermodynamically stable, while Cu2CaSnS4 and Cu2CaSnSe4 are unstable. The ground state configuration of the compound changes from kesterite into stannite structure when Zn atoms are substitued by larger Mg or Ca atoms. An energy separation between stannite and kesterite phase similar to that of CZTS is observed. Calculated electronic structures and optical properties suggest that Cu2MgSnS4 and Cu2MgSnSe4 can be efficient photovoltaic materials.

Phonon Properties, Thermal Expansion, and Thermomechanics of Silicene and Germanene

We report a hierarchical first-principles investigation on the entangled effects of lattice dimensionality and bond characteristics in the lattice dynamics of silicene and germanene. It is found that bond bending (stretching) negatively (positively) contributes to Grüneisen constant, which results in the negative acoustic (positive optical) Grüneisen constant. The layer thickening (bond weakening) caused by chemical functionalization tends to increase (decrease) the acoustic (optical) Grüneisen constant, due to the increased (decreased) bond-stretching effect. The excitation of the negative-$γ$ modes results in negative thermal expansion, while mode excitation and thermal expansion compete with each other in thermomechanics. The sensitive structural and electronic responses of silicene and germanene to functionalization help us to derive a generic physical picture for two-dimensional lattice dynamics.

A Prototype of LaBr3:Ce in situ Gamma-Ray Spectrometer for Marine Environmental Monitoring

A prototype of LaBr3:Ce in situ gamma-ray spectrometer for marine environmental monitoring is developed and applied for in situ measurement. A 3-inch LaBr3:Ce scintillator is used in the detector, and a digital pulse process electronics is chosen as the pulse height analyzer. For this prototype, the energy response of the spectrometer is linear and the energy resolution of 662keV is 2.6% (much better than NaI). With the measurement of the prototype in a water tank filled with 137Cs, the detect efficiency for 137Cs is (0.288 0.01)cps/(Bq/L), which is close to the result of Monte Carlo simulation, 0.283cps/(Bq/L). With this measurement, the MDAC for 137Cs in one hour has been calculated to 0.78Bq/L, better than that of NaI(Tl) in-situ gamma spectrometer, which is ~1.0Bq/L.

The cosmic ray muon tomography facility based on large scale MRPC detector

Cosmic ray muon tomography is a novel technology to detect high-Z material. A prototype of TUMUTY with 73.6 cm x 73.6 cm large scale position sensitive MRPC detectors has been developed and is introduced in this paper. Three test kits have been tested and image is reconstructed using MAP algorithm. The reconstruction results show that the prototype is working well and the objects with complex structure and small size (20 mm) can be imaged on it, while the high-Z material is distinguishable from the low-Z one. This prototype provides a good platform for our further studies of the physical characteristics and the performances of cosmic ray muon tomography.

Controlled remote state preparation via partially entangled quantum channel

We propose two controlled remote state preparation protocols via partially entangled channels. One prepares a single-qubit state and the other prepares a two-qubit state. Different from other controlled remote state preparation schemes which also utilize partially entangled channels, neither auxiliary qubits nor two-qubit unitary transformations are required in our schemes and the success probabilities are independent of the coefficients of the quantum channel. The success probabilities are 50% and 25% for arbitrary single-qubit states and two-qubit states, respectively. We also show that the success probabilities can reach 100% for restricted classes of states.

The examination of stable charge states of vacancies in Cu2ZnSnS4

The stable charge states of vacancies in the solar cell absorber material Cu2ZnSnS4 are investigated using Kohn-Sham (KS) defect-induced single particle levels analysis by concerning the screened Coulomb hybrid functional. We found out that the Cu, Zn and S vacancies (denoted by VCu, VZn, VS) do not induce single particle defect levels in the vicinity of the band gap thus each of them has only one stable charge state corresponding to the fully occupied valence band VCu1-, VZn2- and VS0, respectively (and therefore cannot account for any defect transition energy levels). The Sn vacancy (VSn) has three stable charge states VSn2-, VSn3- and VSn4-, which may account for two charge transition energy levels. By comparing with previous charge transition energy levels studies, our results indicate that the examination of stable charge states is a necessary and important step which should be done before charge transition energy levels calculations.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity in CaC2

Carbon can exist as isolated dumbbell, one-dimensional (1D) chain, 2D plane, and 3D network in carbon solids or carbon-based compounds, which attributes to its rich chemical binding way, including sp-, sp2-, and sp3-hybridized bonds. Sp2 hybridizing carbon always captures special attention due to its unique physical and chemical property. Here, using evolutionary algorithm in conjunction with ab initio method, we found that under compression, dumbbell carbon in CaC2 can be polymerized firstly into one-dimensional chain and then into ribbon and further into two dimensional graphite sheet at higher pressure. The C2m structure transforms into an orthorhombic Cmcm phase at 0.5 GPa, followed by another orthorhombic Immm phase, which is stabilized at wide pressure range of 15.2-105.8 GPa and then forced into MgB2-type phase with wide range stability up to at least 1 TPa. Strong electron-phonon coupling in cold compressed CaC2 is found, in particular for Immm phase, which has the highest lambda value (0.562-0.564) among them, leading to its high superconducting critical temperature (7.9~9.8 K), wihich is comparable to 11.5K value of CaC6. Our research results show that calcium can not only stabilize carbon sp2 hybridization at larger range of pressure but make them present superconducting behavior, which would further ignite experimental and theoretical research interests on Alkali-Earth metal carbides to uncover their peculiar physical properties under extreme conditions.

Rare case of magnetic Ag$^{3+}$ ion: double perovskite Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$

Normally $4d$ or $5d$ transition metals are in a low-spin state. Here using first-principles calculations, we report on a rare case of a high-spin $S$=1 magnetic state for the Ag$^{3+}$ ion in the double perovskite Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$. We also explored a possibility of a conventional low-spin $S$=0 ground state and find an associated tetragonal distortion to be 0.29 Å. However, the lattice elastic energy cost and the Hund exchange loss exceed the e$_{g}$ crystal-field energy gain, thus making the low-spin tetragonal structure less favorable than the high-spin cubic structure. We conclude that the compact perovskite structure of Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$ is an important factor in stabilizing the unusual high-spin ground state of Ag$^{3+}$.

The characteristics of a low background germanium gamma ray spectrometer at China JinPing underground Laboratory

A low background germanium gamma ray spectrometer, GeTHU, has been installed at China JinPing underground Laboratory. The integral background count rate between 40 and 2700 keV was 0.6 cpm, and the origin was studied by Monte Carlo simulation. Detection limits and efficiencies were calculated for selected gamma peaks. Boric acid and silica sand samples were measured and 137Cs contamination was found in boric acid. GeTHU will be mainly used to measure environmental samples and screen materials in dark matter experiments.

Study of the material photon and electron background and the liquid argon detector veto efficiency of the CDEX-10 experiment

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) is located at the China Jinping underground laboratory (CJPL) and aims to directly detect the WIMP flux with high sensitivity in the low mass region. Here we present a study of the predicted photon and electron backgrounds including the background contribution of the structure materials of the germanium detector, the passive shielding materials, and the intrinsic radioactivity of the liquid argon that serves as an anti-Compton active shielding detector. A detailed geometry is modeled and the background contribution has been simulated based on the measured radioactivities of all possible components within the GEANT4 program. Then the photon and electron background level in the energy region of interest (<10^-2 events kg-1 day-1 keV-1 (cpkkd)) is predicted based on Monte Carlo simulations. The simulated result is consistent with the design goal of CDEX-10 experiment, 0.1 cpkkd, which shows that the active and passive shield design of CDEX-10 is effective and feasible.

Characterization of large area photomultiplier ETL 9357FLB for liquid argon detector

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) Collaboration will carry out a direct search for weakly interacting massive particles with germanium detectors. Liquid argon will be utilized as an anti-Compton and cooling material for the germanium detectors. A low-background and large-area photomultiplier tube (PMT) immersed in liquid argon will be used to read out the light signal from the argon. In this paper we carry out a careful evaluation on the performance of the PMT operating at both room and cryogenic temperatures. Based on the single photoelectron response model, the absolute gain and resolution of the PMT were measured. This has laid a foundation for PMT selection, calibration and signal analysis in the forthcoming CDEX experiments.

A background simulation method for cosmogenic nuclides inside HPGe detectors for rare event experiments

Cosmogenic nuclides inside germanium detectors contribute background noise spectra quite different from ordinary external sources. We propose and discuss a nuclide decay and level transition model based on graph theory to understand the background contribution of the decay of cosmogenic nuclides inside a germanium crystal. In this work, not only was the level transition process, but the detector response time was also taken into consideration to decide whether or not to apply coincidence summing-up. We simulated the background spectrum of the internal cosmogenic nuclides in a germanium detector, and found some unique phenomena caused by the coincidence summing-up effect in the simulated spectrum. Thus, the background spectrum of each cosmogenic nuclide can be quantitatively obtained.

Formation of Nanofoam carbon and re-emergence of Superconductivity in compressed CaC6

Pressure can tune material's electronic properties and control its quantum state, making some systems present disconnected superconducting region as observed in iron chalcogenides and heavy fermion CeCu2Si2. For CaC6 superconductor (Tc of 11.5 K), applying pressure first Tc increases and then suppresses and the superconductivity of this compound is eventually disappeared at about 18 GPa. Here, we report a theoretical finding of the re-emergence of superconductivity in heavily compressed CaC6. The predicted phase III (space group Pmmn) with formation of carbon nanofoam is found to be stable at wide pressure range with a Tc up to 14.7 K at 78 GPa. Diamond-like carbon structure is adhered to the phase IV (Cmcm) for compressed CaC6 after 126 GPa, which has bad metallic behavior, indicating again departure from superconductivity. Re-emerged superconductivity in compressed CaC6 paves a new way to design new-type superconductor by inserting metal into nanoporous host lattice.

Measurement of Cosmic Ray Flux in China JinPing underground Laboratory

China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL) is the deepest underground laboratory presently running in the world. In such a deep underground laboratory, the cosmic ray flux is a very important and necessary parameter for rare event experiments. A plastic scintillator telescope system has been set up to measure the cosmic ray flux. The performance of the telescope system has been studied using the cosmic ray on the ground laboratory near CJPL. Based on the underground experimental data taken from November 2010 to December 2011 in CJPL, which has effective live time of 171 days, the cosmic ray muon flux in CJPL is measured to be (2.0+-0.4)*10^(-10)/(cm^2)/(s). The ultra-low cosmic ray background guarantees CJPL's ideal environment for dark matter experiment.

The CDEX-1 1 kg Point-Contact Germanium Detector for Low Mass Dark Matter Searches

The CDEX Collaboration has been established for direct detection of light dark matter particles, using ultra-low energy threshold p-type point-contact germanium detectors, in China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The first 1 kg point-contact germanium detector with a sub-keV energy threshold has been tested in a passive shielding system located in CJPL. The outputs from both the point-contact p+ electrode and the outside n+ electrode make it possible to scan the lower energy range of less than 1 keV and at the same time to detect the higher energy range up to 3 MeV. The outputs from both p+ and n+ electrode may also provide a more powerful method for signal discrimination for dark matter experiment. Some key parameters, including energy resolution, dead time, decay times of internal X-rays, and system stability, have been tested and measured. The results show that the 1 kg point-contact germanium detector, together with its shielding system and electronics, can run smoothly with good performances. This detector system will be deployed for dark matter search experiments.

Introduction of the CDEX experiment

Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are the candidates of dark matter in our universe. Up to now any direct interaction of WIMP with nuclei has not been observed yet. The exclusion limits of the spin-independent cross section of WIMP-nucleon which have been experimentally obtained is about 10^{-7}pb at high mass region and only 10^{-5}pb} at low mass region. China Jin-Ping underground laboratory CJPL is the deepest underground lab in the world and provides a very promising environment for direct observation of dark matter. The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) experiment is going to directly detect the WIMP flux with high sensitivity in the low mass region. Both CJPL and CDEX have achieved a remarkable progress in recent two years. The CDEX employs a point-contact germanium semi-conductor detector PCGe whose detection threshold is less than 300 eV. We report the measurement results of Muon flux, monitoring of radioactivity and Radon concentration carried out in CJPL, as well describe the structure and performance of the 1 kg PCGe detector CDEX-1 and 10kg detector array CDEX-10 including the detectors, electronics, shielding and cooling systems. Finally we discuss the physics goals of the CDEX-1, CDEX-10 and the future CDEX-1T detectors.

Interlayer magnetic frustration driven quantum spin disorder in honeycomb compound In$_{3}$Cu$_{2}$VO$_{9}$

We present electronic and magnetic properties of a honeycomb compound In$_{3}$Cu$_{2}$VO$_{9}$ in this paper. We find that the parent phase is a charge transfer insulator with an energy gap of about 1.5 eV. Singly occupied d$_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ electrons of copper ions contribute an $S$ = 1/2 spin, while vanadium ions show nonmagnetism. Oxygen 2$p$ orbitals hybridizing with a small fraction of Cu 3$d$ orbitals dominate the density of states near $E_{F}$. The planar nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and interplane superexchange couplings of Cu spins are $J_{1}$ $\approx$ 16.2 meV, $J_{2}$ $\approx$ 0.3 meV and $J_{z}$ $\approx$ 1.2 meV, suggesting a low-dimensional antiferromagnet \cite{Sondhi10}. We propose that the magnetic frustration along the c-axis leads to a quantum spin disorder in In$_{3}$Cu$_{2}$VO$_{9}$, in accordance with the recent experiments. {abstract}
