Frames and vertex-frequency representations in graph fractional Fourier domain

Vertex-frequency analysis, particularly the windowed graph Fourier transform (WGFT), is a significant challenge in graph signal processing. Tight frame theories is known for its low computational complexity in signal reconstruction, while fractional order methods shine at unveil more detailed structural characteristics of graph signals. In the graph fractional Fourier domain, we introduce multi-windowed graph fractional Fourier frames (MWGFRFF) to facilitate the construction of tight frames. This leads to developing the multi-windowed graph fractional Fourier transform (MWGFRFT), enabling novel vertex-frequency analysis methods. A reconstruction formula is derived, along with results concerning dual and tight frames. To enhance computational efficiency, a fast MWGFRFT (FMWGFRFT) algorithm is proposed. Furthermore, we define shift multi-windowed graph fractional Fourier frames (SMWGFRFF) and their associated transform (SMWGFRFT), exploring their dual and tight frames. Experimental results indicate that FMWGFRFT and SMWGFRFT excel in extracting vertex-frequency features in the graph fractional Fourier domain, with their combined use optimizing analytical performance. Applications in signal anomaly detection demonstrate the advantages of FMWGFRFT.

Benchmarking Multi-dimensional AIGC Video Quality Assessment: A Dataset and Unified Model

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven video generation has gained significant attention. Consequently, there is a growing need for accurate video quality assessment (VQA) metrics to evaluate the perceptual quality of AI-generated content (AIGC) videos and optimize video generation models. However, assessing the quality of AIGC videos remains a significant challenge because these videos often exhibit highly complex distortions, such as unnatural actions and irrational objects. To address this challenge, we systematically investigate the AIGC-VQA problem, considering both subjective and objective quality assessment perspectives. For the subjective perspective, we construct the Large-scale Generated Video Quality assessment (LGVQ) dataset, consisting of 2,808 AIGC videos generated by 6 video generation models using 468 carefully curated text prompts. We evaluate the perceptual quality of AIGC videos from three critical dimensions: spatial quality, temporal quality, and text-video alignment. For the objective perspective, we establish a benchmark for evaluating existing quality assessment metrics on the LGVQ dataset. Our findings show that current metrics perform poorly on this dataset, highlighting a gap in effective evaluation tools. To bridge this gap, we propose the Unify Generated Video Quality assessment (UGVQ) model, designed to accurately evaluate the multi-dimensional quality of AIGC videos. The UGVQ model integrates the visual and motion features of videos with the textual features of their corresponding prompts, forming a unified quality-aware feature representation tailored to AIGC videos. Experimental results demonstrate that UGVQ achieves state-of-the-art performance on the LGVQ dataset across all three quality dimensions. Both the LGVQ dataset and the UGVQ model are publicly available on https://github.com/zczhang-sjtu/UGVQ.git.

ReverseNER: A Self-Generated Example-Driven Framework for Zero-Shot Named Entity Recognition with Large Language Models

This paper presents ReverseNER, a method aimed at overcoming the limitation of large language models (LLMs) in zero-shot named entity recognition (NER) tasks, arising from their reliance on pre-provided demonstrations. ReverseNER tackles this challenge by constructing a reliable example library composed of dozens of entity-labeled sentences, generated through the reverse process of NER. Specifically, while conventional NER methods label entities in a sentence, ReverseNER features reversing the process by using an LLM to generate entities from their definitions and subsequently expand them into full sentences. During the entity expansion process, the LLM is guided to generate sentences by replicating the structures of a set of specific \textsl{feature sentences}, extracted from the task sentences by clustering. This expansion process produces dozens of entity-labeled task-relevant sentences. After constructing the example library, the method selects several semantically similar entity-labeled examples for each task sentence as references to facilitate the LLM's entity recognition. We also propose an entity-level self-consistency scoring mechanism to improve NER performance with LLMs. Experiments show that ReverseNER significantly outperforms other zero-shot NER methods with LLMs, marking a notable improvement in NER for domains without labeled data, while declining computational resource consumption.

Convolution Type of Metaplectic Cohen's Distribution Time-Frequency Analysis Theory, Method and Technology

The conventional Cohen's distribution can't meet the requirement of additive noises jamming signals high-performance denoising under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratio, it is necessary to integrate the metaplectic transform for non-stationary signal fractional domain time-frequency analysis. In this paper, we blend time-frequency operators and coordinate operator fractionizations to formulate the definition of the metaplectic Wigner distribution, based on which we integrate the generalized metaplectic convolution to address the unified representation issue of the convolution type of metaplectic Cohen's distribution (CMCD), whose special cases and essential properties are also derived. We blend Wiener filter principle and fractional domain filter mechanism of the metaplectic transform to design the least-squares adaptive filter method in the metaplectic Wigner distribution domain, giving birth to the least-squares adaptive filter-based CMCD whose kernel function can be adjusted with the input signal automatically to achieve the minimum mean-square error (MSE) denoising in Wigner distribution domain. We discuss the optimal symplectic matrices selection strategy of the proposed adaptive CMCD through the minimum MSE minimization modeling and solving. Some examples are also carried out to demonstrate that the proposed filtering method outperforms some state-of-the-arts including Wiener filter and fixed kernel functions-based or adaptive Cohen's distribution in noise suppression.

Large Multi-modality Model Assisted AI-Generated Image Quality Assessment

Traditional deep neural network (DNN)-based image quality assessment (IQA) models leverage convolutional neural networks (CNN) or Transformer to learn the quality-aware feature representation, achieving commendable performance on natural scene images. However, when applied to AI-Generated images (AGIs), these DNN-based IQA models exhibit subpar performance. This situation is largely due to the semantic inaccuracies inherent in certain AGIs caused by uncontrollable nature of the generation process. Thus, the capability to discern semantic content becomes crucial for assessing the quality of AGIs. Traditional DNN-based IQA models, constrained by limited parameter complexity and training data, struggle to capture complex fine-grained semantic features, making it challenging to grasp the existence and coherence of semantic content of the entire image. To address the shortfall in semantic content perception of current IQA models, we introduce a large Multi-modality model Assisted AI-Generated Image Quality Assessment (MA-AGIQA) model, which utilizes semantically informed guidance to sense semantic information and extract semantic vectors through carefully designed text prompts. Moreover, it employs a mixture of experts (MoE) structure to dynamically integrate the semantic information with the quality-aware features extracted by traditional DNN-based IQA models. Comprehensive experiments conducted on two AI-generated content datasets, AIGCQA-20k and AGIQA-3k show that MA-AGIQA achieves state-of-the-art performance, and demonstrate its superior generalization capabilities on assessing the quality of AGIs. Code is available at https://github.com/wangpuyi/MA-AGIQA.

Multi-dimensional Graph Linear Canonical Transform

Many multi-dimensional (M-D) graph signals appear in the real world, such as digital images, sensor network measurements and temperature records from weather observation stations. It is a key challenge to design a transform method for processing these graph M-D signals in the linear canonical transform domain. This paper proposes the two-dimensional graph linear canonical transform based on the central discrete dilated Hermite function (2-D CDDHFs-GLCT) and the two-dimensional graph linear canonical transform based on chirp multiplication-chirp convolution-chirp multiplication decomposition (2-D CM-CC-CM-GLCT). Then, extending 2-D CDDHFs-GLCT and 2-D CM-CC-CM-GLCT to M-D CDDHFs-GLCT and M-D CM-CC-CM-GLCT. In terms of the computational complexity, additivity and reversibility, M-D CDDHFs-GLCT and M-D CM-CC-CM-GLCT are compared. Theoretical analysis shows that the computational complexity of M-D CM-CC-CM-GLCT algorithm is obviously reduced. Simulation results indicate that M-D CM-CC-CM-GLCT achieves comparable additivity to M-D CDDHFs-GLCT, while M-D CM-CC-CM-GLCT exhibits better reversibility. Finally, M-D GLCT is applied to data compression to show its application advantages. The experimental results reflect the superiority of M-D GLCT in the algorithm design and implementation of data compression.

Graph Linear Canonical Transform Based on CM-CC-CM Decomposition

The graph linear canonical transform (GLCT) is presented as an extension of the graph Fourier transform (GFT) and the graph fractional Fourier transform (GFrFT), offering more flexibility as an effective tool for graph signal processing. In this paper, we introduce a GLCT based on chirp multiplication-chirp convolution-chirp multiplication decomposition (CM-CC-CM-GLCT), which irrelevant to sampling periods and without oversampling operation. Various properties and special cases of the CM-CC-CM-GLCT are derived and discussed. In terms of computational complexity, additivity, and reversibility, we compare the CM-CC-CM-GLCT and the GLCT based on the central discrete dilated Hermite function (CDDHFs-GLCT). Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the computational complexity of the CM-CC-CM-GLCT is significantly reduced. Simulation results indicate that the CM-CC-CM-GLCT achieves similar additivity to the CDDHFs-GLCT. Notably, the CM-CC-CM-GLCT exhibits better reversibility.

AIGIQA-20K: A Large Database for AI-Generated Image Quality Assessment

With the rapid advancements in AI-Generated Content (AIGC), AI-Generated Images (AIGIs) have been widely applied in entertainment, education, and social media. However, due to the significant variance in quality among different AIGIs, there is an urgent need for models that consistently match human subjective ratings. To address this issue, we organized a challenge towards AIGC quality assessment on NTIRE 2024 that extensively considers 15 popular generative models, utilizing dynamic hyper-parameters (including classifier-free guidance, iteration epochs, and output image resolution), and gather subjective scores that consider perceptual quality and text-to-image alignment altogether comprehensively involving 21 subjects. This approach culminates in the creation of the largest fine-grained AIGI subjective quality database to date with 20,000 AIGIs and 420,000 subjective ratings, known as AIGIQA-20K. Furthermore, we conduct benchmark experiments on this database to assess the correspondence between 16 mainstream AIGI quality models and human perception. We anticipate that this large-scale quality database will inspire robust quality indicators for AIGIs and propel the evolution of AIGC for vision. 6Rover: Leveraging Reinforcement Learning-based Address Pattern Mining Approach for Discovering Active Targets in IPv6 Unseeded Space

The discovery of active IPv6 addresses represents a pivotal challenge in IPv6 network survey, as it is a prerequisite for downstream tasks such as network topology measurements and security analysis. With the rapid spread of IPv6 networks in recent years, many researchers have focused on improving the hit rate, efficiency, and coverage of IPv6 scanning methods, resulting in considerable advancements. However, existing approaches remain heavily dependent on seed addresses, thereby limiting their effectiveness in unseeded prefixes. Consequently, this paper proposes 6Rover, a reinforcement learning-based model for active address discovery in unseeded environments. To overcome the reliance on seeded addresses, 6Rover constructs patterns with higher generality that reflects the actual address allocation strategies of network administrators, thereby avoiding biased transfers of patterns from seeded to unseeded prefixes. After that, 6Rover employs a multi-armed bandit model to optimize the probing resource allocation when applying patterns to unseeded spaces. It models the challenge of discovering optimal patterns in unseeded spaces as an exploration-exploitation dilemma, and progressively uncover the potential patterns applied in unseeded spaces, leading to the efficient discovery of active addresses without seed address as the prior knowledge. Experiments on large-scale unseeded datasets show that 6Rover has a higher hit rate than existing methods in the absence of any seed addresses as prior knowledge. In real network environments, 6Rover achieved a 5% - 8% hit rate in seedless spaces with 100 million budget scale, representing an approximate 200\% improvement over the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Universal scaling relation and criticality in metabolism and growth of Escherichia coli

The metabolic network plays a crucial role in regulating bacterial metabolism and growth, but it is subject to inherent molecular stochasticity. Previous studies have utilized flux balance analysis and the maximum entropy method to predict metabolic fluxes and growth rates, while the underlying principles governing bacterial metabolism and growth, especially the criticality hypothesis, remain unclear. In this study, we employ a maximum entropy approach to investigate the universality in various constraint-based metabolic networks of Escherichia coli. Our findings reveal the existence of universal scaling relations across different nutritional environments and metabolic network models, similar to the universality observed in physics. By analyzing single-cell data, we confirm that metabolism of Escherichia coli operates close to the state with maximum Fisher information, which serves as a signature of criticality. This critical state provides functional advantages such as high sensitivity and long-range correlation. Moreover, we demonstrate that a metabolic system operating at criticality takes a compromise solution between growth and adaptation, thereby serving as a survival strategy in fluctuating environments.

Subjective and Objective Quality Assessment for in-the-Wild Computer Graphics Images

Computer graphics images (CGIs) are artificially generated by means of computer programs and are widely perceived under various scenarios, such as games, streaming media, etc. In practice, the quality of CGIs consistently suffers from poor rendering during production, inevitable compression artifacts during the transmission of multimedia applications, and low aesthetic quality resulting from poor composition and design. However, few works have been dedicated to dealing with the challenge of computer graphics image quality assessment (CGIQA). Most image quality assessment (IQA) metrics are developed for natural scene images (NSIs) and validated on databases consisting of NSIs with synthetic distortions, which are not suitable for in-the-wild CGIs. To bridge the gap between evaluating the quality of NSIs and CGIs, we construct a large-scale in-the-wild CGIQA database consisting of 6,000 CGIs (CGIQA-6k) and carry out the subjective experiment in a well-controlled laboratory environment to obtain the accurate perceptual ratings of the CGIs. Then, we propose an effective deep learning-based no-reference (NR) IQA model by utilizing both distortion and aesthetic quality representation. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms all other state-of-the-art NR IQA methods on the constructed CGIQA-6k database and other CGIQA-related databases. The database is released at https://github.com/zzc-1998/CGIQA6K.

Revisiting Communication-Efficient Federated Learning with Balanced Global and Local Updates

In federated learning (FL), a number of devices train their local models and upload the corresponding parameters or gradients to the base station (BS) to update the global model while protecting their data privacy. However, due to the limited computation and communication resources, the number of local trainings (a.k.a. local update) and that of aggregations (a.k.a. global update) need to be carefully chosen. In this paper, we investigate and analyze the optimal trade-off between the number of local trainings and that of global aggregations to speed up the convergence and enhance the prediction accuracy over the existing works. Our goal is to minimize the global loss function under both the delay and the energy consumption constraints. In order to make the optimization problem tractable, we derive a new and tight upper bound on the loss function, which allows us to obtain closed-form expressions for the number of local trainings and that of global aggregations. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can achieve a better performance in terms of the prediction accuracy, and converge much faster than the baseline schemes.

Learning Frame Level Attention for Environmental Sound Classification

Environmental sound classification (ESC) is a challenging problem due to the complexity of sounds. The classification performance is heavily dependent on the effectiveness of representative features extracted from the environmental sounds. However, ESC often suffers from the semantically irrelevant frames and silent frames. In order to deal with this, we employ a frame-level attention model to focus on the semantically relevant frames and salient frames. Specifically, we first propose a convolutional recurrent neural network to learn spectro-temporal features and temporal correlations. Then, we extend our convolutional RNN model with a frame-level attention mechanism to learn discriminative feature representations for ESC. We investigated the classification performance when using different attention scaling function and applying different layers. Experiments were conducted on ESC-50 and ESC-10 datasets. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method and our method achieved the state-of-the-art or competitive classification accuracy with lower computational complexity. We also visualized our attention results and observed that the proposed attention mechanism was able to lead the network tofocus on the semantically relevant parts of environmental sounds.

Potential jumps at transport bottlenecks cause instability of nominally ionic solid electrolytes in electrochemical cells

Normal operations of electrochemical devices such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOEC) and lithium ion batteries (LIB) sometimes fail because of unexpected formation of internal phases. These phases include oxygen bubbles at grain boundaries inside the zirconia electrolyte of SOEC, isolated Li metal islands inside the (garnet type) Li7La3Zr2O12 electrolyte of all-solid-state LIB, and similar Na metal islands inside the Na-beta-alumina and NASICON electrolytes of Na-S batteries. Remarkably, although the devices can operate in both polarities, the propensity for failure depends on the polarity. Here we explain these and other phenomena in nominally ionic solid electrolytes and mixed-conducting electrodes in simple thermodynamic and kinetic terms: the unexpected internal phases are caused by a large potential jump that is needed to push a constant ion or electron flow through its internal transport bottleneck. Definite rules for internal phase formation including its polarity dependence are formulated to help predict and mitigate it, which leads to microstructural instability, efficiency deterioration and breakdown.

Sub-Spectrogram Segmentation for Environmental Sound Classification via Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network and Score Level Fusion

Environmental Sound Classification (ESC) is an important and challenging problem, and feature representation is a critical and even decisive factor in ESC. Feature representation ability directly affects the accuracy of sound classification. Therefore, the ESC performance is heavily dependent on the effectiveness of representative features extracted from the environmental sounds. In this paper, we propose a subspectrogram segmentation based ESC classification framework. In addition, we adopt the proposed Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN) and score level fusion to jointly improve the classification accuracy. Extensive truncation schemes are evaluated to find the optimal number and the corresponding band ranges of sub-spectrograms. Based on the numerical experiments, the proposed framework can achieve 81.9% ESC classification accuracy on the public dataset ESC-50, which provides 9.1% accuracy improvement over traditional baseline schemes.
