SASA: A Scalable and Automatic Stencil Acceleration Framework for Optimized Hybrid Spatial and Temporal Parallelism on HBM-based FPGAs

Stencil computation is one of the fundamental computing patterns in many application domains such as scientific computing and image processing. While there are promising studies that accelerate stencils on FPGAs, there lacks an automated acceleration framework to systematically explore both spatial and temporal parallelisms for iterative stencils that could be either computation-bound or memory-bound. In this paper, we present SASA, a scalable and automatic stencil acceleration framework on modern HBM-based FPGAs. SASA takes the high-level stencil DSL and FPGA platform as inputs, automatically exploits the best spatial and temporal parallelism configuration based on our accurate analytical model, and generates the optimized FPGA design with the best parallelism configuration in TAPA high-level synthesis C++ as well as its corresponding host code. Compared to state-of-the-art automatic stencil acceleration framework SODA that only exploits temporal parallelism, SASA achieves an average speedup of 3.74x and up to 15.73x speedup on the HBM-based Xilinx Alveo U280 FPGA board for a wide range of stencil kernels.

Low Ambiguity Zone: Theoretical Bounds and Doppler-Resilient Sequence Design in Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

In radar sensing and communications, designing Doppler resilient sequences (DRSs) with low ambiguity function for delay over the entire signal duration and Doppler shift over the entire signal bandwidth is an extremely difficult task. However, in practice, the Doppler frequency range is normally much smaller than the bandwidth of the transmitted signal, and it is relatively easy to attain quasi-synchronization for delays far less than the entire signal duration. Motivated by this observation, we propose a new concept called low ambiguity zone (LAZ) which is a small area of the corresponding ambiguity function of interest defined by the certain Doppler frequency and delay. Such an LAZ will reduce to a zero ambiguity zone (ZAZ) if the maximum ambiguity values of interest are zero. In this paper, we derive a set of theoretical bounds on periodic LAZ/ZAZ of unimodular DRSs with and without spectral constraints, which include the existing bounds on periodic global ambiguity function as special cases. These bounds may be used as theoretical design guidelines to measure the optimality of sequences against Doppler effect. We then introduce four optimal constructions of DRSs with respect to the derived ambiguity lower bounds based on some algebraic tools such as characters over finite field and cyclic difference sets.

A further study on the linear complexity of new binary cyclotomic sequence of length $p^r$

Recently, a conjecture on the linear complexity of a new class of generalized cyclotomic binary sequences of period $p^r$ was proposed by Z. Xiao et al. (Des. Codes Cryptogr., DOI 10.1007/s10623-017-0408-7). Later, for the case $f$ being the form $2^r$ with $r\ge 1$, Vladimir Edemskiy proved the conjecture (arXiv:1712.03947). In this paper, under the assumption of $2^{p-1} \not\equiv 1 \bmod p^2$ and $\gcd(\frac{p-1}{\rm {ord}_{p}(2)},f)=1$, the conjecture proposed by Z. Xiao et al. is proved for a general $f$ by using the Euler quotient. Actually, a generic construction of $p^r$-periodic binary sequence based on the generalized cyclotomy is introduced in this paper, which admits a flexible support set and includes Xiao's construction as a special case, and then an efficient method to compute the linear complexity of the sequence by the generic construction is presented, based on which the conjecture proposed by Z. Xiao et al. could be easily proved under the aforementioned assumption.
