Orthogonal Geometry of Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect Enabled by Magnetization Multipole of Berry Curvature

The Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) is a fundamental tool in magnetometry, pivotal for advancing research in optics, magnetism, and spintronics as a direct probe of magnetization. Traditional MOKE measurements primarily detect the magnetization components parallel to the Poynting vector, which can only access the magnitude but not the direction of the orthogonal component. In this study, we introduce an orthogonal MOKE geometry in which the Kerr signal detects both the magnitude and direction of the magnetization component perpendicular to the Poynting vector. We demonstrate the broad applicability of this orthogonal geometry through the MOKE measurements in cubic ferromagnets and van der Waals ferromagnet. We theoretically show that the orthogonal MOKE geometry is enabled by the multipolar structure of Berry curvature in the magnetization space, which generally induces a Voigt vector orthogonal to the magnetization, thereby accounting for the unique magnetization angle dependence distinct from conventional MOKE. The establishment of the orthogonal MOKE geometry not only introduces a new paradigm for magneto-optical measurements but also provides a framework for exploring the magnetization multipoles of Berry curvature across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Evidence for distortion-induced local electric polarization in $α$-RuCl$_3$

The spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator $α$-RuCl$_3$ is a prime candidate for material realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. While little attention has been paid to charge degrees of freedom, charge effects, such as electric polarization, may arise in this system. Here, we report distortion-induced local electric polarization in $α$-RuCl$_3$ as evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, second harmonic generation (SHG) and dielectric measurements. The SHG signal appears at room temperature and develops substantially in the Kitaev paramagnetic state when short-range spin correlations come into play. Despite sizable pyroelectric currents in the Kitaev paramagnetic state, the absence of hysteresis in electric field-dependent polariza-tion (P-E) points to the short-range nature of electric polarization. This localized electric polarization is likely the result of distortion-induced charge dimerization, achieved through virtual hopping-induced charge redistribution. In addition, the electric polarization is boosted by short-range spin correlations via spin-phonon coupling in the Kitaev paramagnetic state. Our results emphasize the importance of charge degrees of freedom in $α$-RuCl$_3$, which establish a novel platform to investi-gate charge effects in Kitaev materials.

Flexomagnetoelectric effect in Sr2IrO4 thin films

Symmetry engineering is explicitly effective to manipulate and even create phases and orderings in strongly correlated materials. Flexural stress is universally practical to break the space-inversion or time-reversal symmetry. Here, by introducing strain gradient in a centrosymmetric antiferromagnet Sr2IrO4, the space-inversion symmetry is broken accompanying a non-equivalent O p-Ir d orbital hybridization along z axis. Thus, emergent polar phase and out-of-plane magnetic moment have been simultaneously observed in these asymmetric Sr2IrO4 thin films, which both are absent in its ground state. Furthermore, upon the application of magnetic field, such polarization can be controlled by modifying the occupied d orbitals through spin-orbit interaction, giving rise to a flexomagnetoelectric effect. This work provides a general strategy to artificially design multiple symmetries and ferroic orderings in strongly correlated systems.

Phonon-related monochromatic THz radiation and its magneto-modulation in 2D ferromagnetic Cr2Ge2Te6

Searching multiple types of terahertz (THz) irradiation source is crucial for the THz technology. Here, by utilizing a two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic Cr2Ge2Te6 crystal, we firstly demonstrate a magneto-tunable monochromatic THz irradiation source. With a low-photonic-energy broadband THz pump, a strong THz irradiation with frequency ~0.9 THz and bandwidth ~0.25 THz can be generated and its conversion efficiency could even reach 2.1% at 160 K. Moreover, it is intriguing to find that such monochromatic THz irradiation can be efficiently modulated by the magnetic field below 160 K. According to both experimental and theoretical analyses, the emergent THz irradiation is identified as the emission from the phonon-polariton and its temperature and magnetic field dependent behaviors confirmed the large spin-lattice coupling in this 2D ferromagnetic crystal. These observations provide a new route for the creation of tunable monochromatic THz source which may have great practical interests in future applications in photonic and spintronic devices.

Observation of an Unusual Colossal Anisotropic Magnetoresistance Effect in an Antiferromagnetic Semiconductor

Searching for novel antiferromagnetic materials with large magnetotransport response is highly demanded for constructing future spintronic devices with high stability, fast switching speed, and high density. Here we report a colossal anisotropic magnetoresistance effect in an antiferromagnetic binary compound with layered structure rare-earth dichalcogenide EuTe2. The AMR reaches 40000%, which is 4 orders of magnitude larger than that in conventional antiferromagnetic alloys. Combined magnetization, resistivity, and theoretical analysis reveal that the colossal AMR effect is attributed to a novel mechanism of vector-field tunable band structure, rather than the conventional spin-orbit coupling mechanism. Moreover, it is revealed that the strong hybridization between orbitals of Eu-layer with localized spin and Te-layer with itinerant carriers is extremely important for the large AMR effect. Our results suggest a new direction towards exploring AFM materials with prominent magnetotransport properties, which creates an unprecedented opportunity for AFM spintronics applications.

Polar Rectification Effect in Electro-Fatigued SrTiO3 Based Junctions

Rectifying semiconductor junctions are crucial to electronic devices. They convert alternating current into direct one by allowing unidirectional charge flows. In analogy to the current-flow rectification for itinerary electrons, here, a polar rectification that based on the localized oxygen vacancies (OVs) in a Ti/fatigued-SrTiO3 (fSTO) Schottky junction is first demonstrated. The fSTO with OVs is produced by an electro-degradation process. The different movability of localized OVs and itinerary electrons in the fSTO yield a unidirectional electric polarization at the interface of the junction under the coaction of external and built-in electric fields. Moreover, the fSTO displays a pre-ferroelectric state located between paraelectric and ferroelectric phases. The pre-ferroelectric state has three sub-states and can be easily driven into a ferroelectric state by external electric field. These observations open up opportunities for potential polar devices and may underpin many useful polar-triggered electronic phenomena.

Multiple structure and symmetry types in narrow temperature and magnetic field ranges in two-dimensional Cr2Ge2Te6 crystal

Multiple structure and symmetry types and their transformations are discovered in quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Cr2Ge2Te6 crystal in surprisingly very narrow temperature range of 2 K and magnetic field range of 0.07 T using a homebuilt magnetic force microscope (MFM). A series of basic domain patterns are extracted from the MFM images. Some of them seem unique to 2-D materials as they are not observed in 3-D materials, such as self-fitting disks, and fine ladder structure within Y-connected walls. Based on these findings, a phase map is drawn for the magnetic phase structures. The symmetry of the patterns are discussed. The results are not only important in developing new theories but also highly desirable in applications.

Evolution of Weyl orbit and quantum Hall effect in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2

Owing to the coupling between open Fermi arcs on opposite surfaces, topological Dirac semimetals exhibit a new type of cyclotron orbit in the surface states known as Weyl orbit. Here, by lowering the carrier density in Cd3As2 nanoplates, we observe a crossover from multiple- to single-frequency Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations when subjected to out-of-plane magnetic field, indicating the dominant role of surface transport. With the increase of magnetic field, the SdH oscillations further develop into quantum Hall state with non-vanishing longitudinal resistance. By tracking the oscillation frequency and Hall plateau, we observe a Zeeman-related splitting and extract the Landau level index as well as sub-band number. Different from conventional two-dimensional systems, this unique quantum Hall effect may be related to the quantized version of Weyl orbits. Our results call for further investigations into the exotic quantum Hall states in the low-dimensional structure of topological semimetals.

Direct Imaging of Dynamic Glassy Behavior in a Strained Manganite Film

Complex many-body interaction in perovskite manganites gives rise to a strong competition between ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered phases with nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity and glassy behaviors. Investigating this glassy state requires high resolution imaging techniques with sufficient sensitivity and stability. Here, we present the results of a near-field microwave microscope imaging on the strain driven glassy state in a manganite film. The high contrast between the two electrically distinct phases allows direct visualization of the phase separation. The low temperature microscopic configurations differ upon cooling with different thermal histories. At sufficiently high temperatures, we observe switching between the two phases in either direction. The dynamic switching, however, stops below the glass transition temperature. Compared with the magnetization data, the phase separation was microscopically frozen, while spin relaxation was found in a short period of time.
