Distributed Edge Caching via Reinforcement Learning in Fog Radio Access Networks

In this paper, the distributed edge caching problem in fog radio access networks (F-RANs) is investigated. By considering the unknown spatio-temporal content popularity and user preference, a user request model based on hidden Markov process is proposed to characterize the fluctuant spatio-temporal traffic demands in F-RANs. Then, the Q-learning method based on the reinforcement learning (RL) framework is put forth to seek the optimal caching policy in a distributed manner, which enables fog access points (F-APs) to learn and track the potential dynamic process without extra communications cost. Furthermore, we propose a more efficient Q-learning method with value function approximation (Q-VFA-learning) to reduce complexity and accelerate convergence. Simulation results show that the performance of our proposed method is superior to those of the traditional methods.

Energy Efficiency Fairness Beamforming Designs for MISO NOMA Systems

In this paper, we propose two beamforming designs for a multiple-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access system considering the energy efficiency (EE) fairness between users. In particular, two quantitative fairness-based designs are developed to maintain fairness between the users in terms of achieved EE: max-min energy efficiency (MMEE) and proportional fairness (PF) designs. While the MMEE-based design aims to maximize the minimum EE of the users in the system, the PF-based design aims to seek a good balance between the global energy efficiency of the system and the EE fairness between the users. Detailed simulation results indicate that our proposed designs offer many-fold EE improvements over the existing energy-efficient beamforming designs.

Sum Rate Fairness Trade-off-based Resource Allocation Technique for MISO NOMA Systems

In this paper, we propose a beamforming design that jointly considers two conflicting performance metrics, namely the sum rate and fairness, for a multiple-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access system. Unlike the conventional rate-aware beamforming designs, the proposed approach has the flexibility to assign different weights to the objectives (i.e., sum rate and fairness) according to the network requirements and the channel conditions. In particular, the proposed design is first formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem, and subsequently mapped to a single objective optimization (SOO) problem by exploiting the weighted sum approach combined with a prior articulation method. As the resulting SOO problem is non-convex, we use the sequential convex approximation technique, which introduces multiple slack variables, to solve the overall problem. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance and the effectiveness of the proposed approach along with detailed comparisons with conventional rate-aware-based beamforming designs.

Energy Efficient Beamforming Design for MISO Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

When considering the future generation wireless networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) represents a viable multiple access technique for improving the spectral efficiency. The basic performance of NOMA is often enhanced using downlink beamforming and power allocation techniques. Although downlink beamforming has been previously studied with different performance criteria, such as sum-rate and max-min rate, it has not been studied in the multiuser, multiple-input single-output (MISO) case, particularly with the energy efficiency criteria. In this paper, we investigate the design of an energy efficient beamforming technique for downlink transmission in the context of a multiuser MISO-NOMA system. In particular, this beamforming design is formulated as a global energy efficiency (GEE) maximization problem with minimum user rate requirements and transmit power constraints. By using the sequential convex approximation (SCA) technique and the Dinkelbach's algorithm to handle the non-convex nature of the GEE-Max problem, we propose two novel algorithms for solving the downlink beamforming problem for the MISO-NOMA system. Our evaluation of the proposed algorithms shows that they offer similar optimal designs and are effective in offering substantial energy efficiencies compared to the designs based on conventional methods.

A User-Centric Cooperative Scheme for UAV Assisted Wireless Networks in Malfunction Areas

A promising application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the future communication networks is to address emergency communications. This paper considers such a scenario where a UAV is employed to a malfunction area (modeled as a circular disc) in which all ground base stations (BSs) break down. The ground BSs outside the malfunction area are modelled as a homogeneous Poisson point process (HPPP). Particularly, a user-centric cooperative scheme is proposed to serve the UEs in the malfunction area. According to the user equipment's (UE's) connections to the UAV and the nearest ground BS, the malfunction area is divided into three regions, namely the UAV region, the cooperation region and the nearest ground BS region, in which the UEs are served by the UAV only, both the UAV and the nearest ground BS, and the nearest ground BS, respectively. The region size of each type can be adjusted by a cooperation parameter $δ$. Through rigorous derivations, an expression for the coverage probability achieved by the UE in the malfunction area is obtained. In order to provide a fair comparison, the normalized spectral efficiency (NSE) which is defined by taking both system throughput and the number of serving BSs into consideration, is used as a criterion for the performance evaluation. Numerical results are presented to verify the accuracy of the analytical results and also to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme.

Spatially Random Relay Selection for Full/Half-Duplex Cooperative NOMA Networks

This paper investigates the impact of relay selection (RS) on the performance of cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), where relays are capable of working in either full-duplex (FD) or half-duplex (HD) mode. A number of relays (i.e., $K$ relays) are uniformly distributed within the disc. A pair of RS schemes are considered insightfully: 1) Single-stage RS (SRS) scheme; and 2) Two-stage RS (TRS) scheme. In order to characterize the performance of these two RS schemes, new closed-form expressions for both exact and asymptotic outage probabilities are derived. Based on analytical results, the diversity orders achieved by the pair of RS schemes for FD/HD cooperative NOMA are obtained. Our analytical results reveal that: i) The FD-based RS schemes obtain a zero diversity order, which is due to the influence of loop interference (LI) at the relay; and ii) The HD-based RS schemes are capable of achieving a diversity order of $K$, which is equal to the number of relays. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that: 1) The FD-based RS schemes have better outage performance than HD-based RS schemes in the low signal-to-noise radio (SNR) region; 2) As the number of relays increases, the pair of RS schemes considered are capable of achieving the lower outage probability; and 3) The outage behaviors of FD/HD-based NOMA SRS/TRS schemes are superior to that of random RS (RRS) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based RS schemes.

Simple Semi-Grant-Free Transmission Strategies Assisted by Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

Grant-free transmission is an important feature to be supported by future wireless networks since it reduces the signalling overhead caused by conventional grant-based schemes. However, for grant-free transmission, the number of users admitted to the same channel is not caped, which can lead to a failure of multi-user detection. This paper proposes non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) assisted semi-grant-free (SGF) transmission, which is a compromise between grant-free and grant-based schemes. In particular, instead of reserving channels either for grant-based users or grant-free users, we focus on an SGF communication scenario, where users are admitted to the same channel via a combination of grant-based and grant-free protocols. As a result, a channel reserved by a grant-based user can be shared by grant-free users, which improves both connectivity and spectral efficiency. Two NOMA assisted SGF contention control mechanisms are developed to ensure that, with a small amount of signalling overhead, the number of admitted grant-free users is carefully controlled and the interference from the grant-free users to the grant-based users is effectively suppressed. Analytical results are provided to demonstrate that the two proposed SGF mechanisms employing different successive interference cancelation decoding orders are applicable to different practical network scenarios.

Exploiting Full/Half-Duplex User Relaying in NOMA Systems

In this paper, a novel cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is proposed, where one near user is employed as decode-and-forward (DF) relaying switching between full-duplex (FD) and half-duplex (HD) mode to help a far user. Two representative cooperative relaying scenarios are investigated insightfully. The \emph{first scenario} is that no direct link exists between the base station (BS) and far user. The \emph{second scenario} is that the direct link exists between the BS and far user. To characterize the performance of potential gains brought by FD NOMA in two considered scenarios, three performance metrics outage probability, ergodic rate and energy efficiency are discussed. More particularly, we derive new closed-form expressions for both exact and asymptotic outage probabilities as well as delay-limited throughput for two NOMA users. Based on the derived results, the diversity orders achieved by users are obtained. We confirm that the use of direct link overcomes zero diversity order of far NOMA user inherent to FD relaying. Additionally, we derive new closed-form expressions for asymptotic ergodic rates. Based on these, the high signal-to-noise radio (SNR) slopes of two users for FD NOMA are obtained. Simulation results demonstrate that: 1) FD NOMA is superior to HD NOMA in terms of outage probability and ergodic sum rate in the low SNR region; and 2) In delay-limited transmission mode, FD NOMA has higher energy efficiency than HD NOMA in the low SNR region; However, in delay-tolerant transmission mode, the system energy efficiency of HD NOMA exceeds FD NOMA in the high SNR region.

On the Performance of Network NOMA in Uplink CoMP Systems: A Stochastic Geometry Approach

To improve the system throughput, this paper proposes a network non-orthogonal multiple access (N-NOMA) technique for the uplink coordinated multi-point transmission (CoMP). In the considered scenario, multiple base stations collaborate with each other to serve a single user, referred to as the CoMP user, which is the same as for conventional CoMP. However, unlike conventional CoMP, each base station in N-NOMA opportunistically serves an extra user, referred to as the NOMA user, while serving the CoMP user at the same bandwidth. The CoMP user is typically located at the cell-edge, whereas users close to the base stations are scheduled as NOMA users. Hence, the channel conditions of the two kind of users are very distinctive, which facilitates the implementation of NOMA. Compared to the conventional orthogonal multiple access based CoMP scheme, where multiple base stations serve a single CoMP user only, the proposed N-NOMA scheme can support larger connectivity by serving the extra NOMA users, and improve the spectral efficiency by avoiding the CoMP user solely occupying the spectrum. A stochastic geometry approach is applied to model the considered N-NOMA scenario as a Poisson cluster process, based on which closed-form analytical expressions for outage probabilities and ergodic rates are obtained. Numerical results are presented to show the accuracy of the analytical results and also demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed N-NOMA scheme.

Enhanced Multiuser Superposition Transmission through Structured Modulation

The 5G air interface, namely, dynamic multiple access (MA) based on multiuser superposition transmission (MUST) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA), may require complicated scheduling and heavy signaling overhead. To address these challenges, we propose a a unified MA scheme for future cellular networks, which we refer to as structured multiuser superposition transmission (S-MUST). In S-MUST, we apply complex power allocation coefficients (CPACs) over multiuser legacy constellations to generate a composite constellation. In particular, the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components of the legacy constellation of each user are separately multiplied by those of the CPACs. As such, the CPACs offer an extra degree of freedom for multiplexing users and guarantee fairness in symmetric broadcast channels. This new paradigm of superposition coding allows us to design IQ separation at the user side, which significantly reduces the decoding complexity without degrading performance. Hence, it supports low-complexity frequency-selective scheduling that does not entail dynamically switching between MUST and OMA. We further propose to quantize the CPACs into complex numbers where I and Q components of each quantized coefficient are primes, facilitating parallel interference cancellation at each user via modulo operations, last but not least, we generalize the design of S-MUST to exploit the capabilities of multiantenna base stations. The proposed S-MUST exhibits an improved user fairness with respect to conventional MUST (134% spectral efficiency enhancement) and a lower system complexity compared with dynamically alternating MUST and OMA.

Robust Beamforming for AN Aided MISO SWIPT System with Unknown Eavesdroppers and Non-linear EH Model

This work studies a beamforming design for downlink transmission of a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) system where each legitimate user employs a power splitting (PS) based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technique. The transmitter intends to send confidential information to its legitimate users in the presence of purely unknown eavesdroppers. Since the transmitter does not have any knowledge of the eavesdroppers' channel state information (CSI), we consider an artificial noise (AN) approach to establishing secure communication. This beamforming design is developed by maximizing the AN power to interfere with the eavesdropper as much as possible. Based on the assumption of imperfect CSI of legitimate users at the transmitter, two robust design approaches for the joint beamforming and PS ratio have been studied to maximize the AN power under both energy harvesting (EH) and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirements at each legitimate user. In the first robust design, we consider the bounded channel uncertainties, and employ semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and a linear matrix inequality (LMI) representation to transform the original problem into a semidefinite program (SDP). In the second robust design, we consider the statistical channel uncertainties, and show that the proposed problem can be reformulated into another form of SDP through both SDR and Bernstein-type inequality. In addition, the non-linear energy harvesting (EH) model is incorporated in this work as it could reflect the characteristics of practical radio frequency(RF)-EH conversion circuit. Simulation results have been provided to demonstrate the performance of our proposed robust designs.

Multi-Antenna NOMA for Computation Offloading in Multiuser Mobile Edge Computing Systems

This paper studies a multiuser mobile edge computing (MEC) system, in which one base station (BS) serves multiple users with intensive computation tasks. We exploit the multi-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique for multiuser computation offloading, such that different users can simultaneously offload their computation tasks to the multi-antenna BS over the same time/frequency resources, and the BS can employ successive interference cancellation (SIC) to efficiently decode all users' offloaded tasks for remote execution. We aim to minimize the weighted sum-energy consumption at all users subject to their computation latency constraints, by jointly optimizing the communication and computation resource allocation as well as the BS's decoding order for SIC. For the case with partial offloading, the weighted sum-energy minimization is a convex optimization problem, for which an efficient algorithm based on the Lagrange duality method is presented to obtain the globally optimal solution. For the case with binary offloading, the weighted sum-energy minimization corresponds to a {\em mixed Boolean convex problem} that is generally more difficult to be solved. We first use the branch-and-bound (BnB) method to obtain the globally optimal solution, and then develop two low-complexity algorithms based on the greedy method and the convex relaxation, respectively, to find suboptimal solutions with high quality in practice. Via numerical results, it is shown that the proposed NOMA-based computation offloading design significantly improves the energy efficiency of the multiuser MEC system as compared to other benchmark schemes. It is also shown that for the case with binary offloading, the proposed greedy method performs close to the optimal BnB based solution, and the convex relaxation based solution achieves a suboptimal performance but with lower implementation complexity.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for 5G and Beyond

Driven by the rapid escalation of the wireless capacity requirements imposed by advanced multimedia applications (e.g., ultra-high-definition video, virtual reality etc.), as well as the dramatically increasing demand for user access required for the Internet of Things (IoT), the fifth generation (5G) networks face challenges in terms of supporting large-scale heterogeneous data traffic. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which has been recently proposed for the 3rd generation partnership projects long-term evolution advanced (3GPP-LTE-A), constitutes a promising technology of addressing the above-mentioned challenges in 5G networks by accommodating several users within the same orthogonal resource block. By doing so, significant bandwidth efficiency enhancement can be attained over conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques. This motivated numerous researchers to dedicate substantial research contributions to this field. In this context, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in power-domain multiplexing aided NOMA, with a focus on the theoretical NOMA principles, multiple antenna aided NOMA design, on the interplay between NOMA and cooperative transmission, on the resource control of NOMA, on the co-existence of NOMA with other emerging potential 5G techniques and on the comparison with other NOMA variants. We highlight the main advantages of power-domain multiplexing NOMA compared to other existing NOMA techniques. We summarize the challenges of existing research contributions of NOMA and provide potential solutions. Finally, we offer some design guidelines for NOMA systems and identify promising research opportunities for the future.

Delay Minimization for NOMA-MEC Offloading

This paper considers the minimization of the offloading delay for non-orthogonal multiple access assisted mobile edge computing (NOMA-MEC). By transforming the delay minimization problem into a form of fractional programming, two iterative algorithms based on Dinkelbach's method and Newton's method are proposed. The optimality of both methods is proved and their convergence is compared. Furthermore, criteria for choosing between three possible modes, namely orthogonal multiple access (OMA), pure NOMA, and hybrid NOMA, for MEC offloading are established.

On the Performance of NOMA with Hybrid ARQ

In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of hybrid automatic repeat request with chase combining (HARQ-CC) assisted downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. A closed-form expression of the individual outage probability and the diversity gain are obtained firstly. Based on the developed analytical outage probability, a tradeoff between the minimum number of retransmissions and the transmit power allocation coefficient is then provided for a given target rate. The provided simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the developed analytical results. Moreover, it is shown that NOMA combined with the HARQ-CC can achieve a significant advantage when only average channel state information is known at the transmitter. Particularly, the performance of the user with less transmit power in NOMA systems can be efficiently improved by utilizing HARQ-CC.

Beamforming Techniques for Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in 5G Cellular Networks

In this paper, we develop various beamforming techniques for downlink transmission for multiple-input single-output (MISO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. First, a beamforming approach with perfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated to provide the required quality of service (QoS) for all users. Taylor series approximation and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques are employed to reformulate the original non-convex power minimization problem to a tractable one. Further, a fairness-based beamforming approach is proposed through a max-min formulation to maintain fairness between users. Next, we consider a robust scheme by incorporating channel uncertainties, where the transmit power is minimized while satisfying the outage probability requirement at each user. Through exploiting the SDR approach, the original non-convex problem is reformulated in a linear matrix inequality (LMI) form to obtain the optimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that the robust scheme can achieve better performance compared to the non-robust scheme in terms of the rate satisfaction ratio. Further, simulation results confirm that NOMA consumes a little over half transmit power needed by OMA for the same data rate requirements. Hence, NOMA has the potential to significantly improve the system performance in terms of transmit power consumption in future 5G networks and beyond.
