Joint Beamforming and Power Allocation in Downlink NOMA Multiuser MIMO Networks

In this paper, a novel joint design of beamforming and power allocation is proposed for a multi-cell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network. In this network, base stations (BSs) adopt coordinated multipoint (CoMP) for downlink transmission. We study a new scenario where the users are divided into two groups according to their quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, rather than their channel qualities as investigated in the literature. Our proposed joint design aims to maximize the sum-rate of the users in one group with the best-effort while guaranteeing the minimum required target rates of the users in the other group. The joint design is formulated as a non-convex NP-hard problem. To make the problem tractable, a series of transformations are adopted to simplify the design problem. Then, an iterative suboptimal resource allocation algorithm based on successive convex approximation is proposed. In each iteration, a rank-constrained optimization problem is solved optimally via semidefinite program relaxation. Numerical results reveal that the proposed scheme offers significant sum-rate gains compared to the existing schemes and converges fast to a suboptimal solution.

Short-Packet Downlink Transmission with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

This work introduces downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) into short-packet communications. NOMA has great potential to improve fairness and spectral efficiency with respect to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) for low-latency downlink transmission, thus making it attractive for the emerging Internet of Things. We consider a two-user downlink NOMA system with finite blocklength constraints, in which the transmission rates and power allocation are optimized. To this end, we investigate the trade-off among the transmission rate, decoding error probability, and the transmission latency measured in blocklength. Then, a one-dimensional search algorithm is proposed to resolve the challenges mainly due to the achievable rate affected by the finite blocklength and the unguaranteed successive interference cancellation. We also analyze the performance of OMA as a benchmark to fully demonstrate the benefit of NOMA. Our simulation results show that NOMA significantly outperforms OMA in terms of achieving a higher effective throughput subject to the same finite blocklength constraint, or incurring a lower latency to achieve the same effective throughput target. Interestingly, we further find that with the finite blocklength, the advantage of NOMA relative to OMA is more prominent when the effective throughput targets at the two users become more comparable.

Asymptotic Performance Analysis of GSVD-NOMA Systems with a Large-Scale Antenna Array

This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink communication scenario with one base station and two users, where each user is equipped with m antennas and the base station is equipped with n antennas. To efficiently exploit the spectrum resources, we propose a transmission protocol which combines generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The average data rates achieved by the two users are adopted as performance metrics for evaluation of the proposed GSVD-NOMA scheme. In particular, we first characterize the limiting distribution of the squared generalized singular values of the two users' channel matrices for the asymptotic case where the numbers of transmit and receive antennas approach infinity. Then, we calculate the normalized average individual rates of the users in the considered asymptotic regime. Furthermore, we extend the proposed GSVD-NOMA scheme to the MIMO downlink communication scenario with more than two users by using a hybrid multiple access (MA) approach, where the base station first divides the users into different groups, then the proposed GSVD-NOMA scheme is implemented within each group, and different groups are allocated with orthogonal bandwidth resources. Finally, numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed GSVD-NOMA protocol, and the accuracy of the developed analytical results.

Impact of Non-orthogonal Multiple Access on the Offloading of Mobile Edge Computing

This paper considers the coexistence of two important communication techniques, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and mobile edge computing (MEC). Both NOMA uplink and downlink transmissions are applied to MEC, and analytical results are developed to demonstrate that the use of NOMA can efficiently reduce the latency and energy consumption of MEC offloading. In addition, various asymptotic studies are carried out to reveal the impact of the users' channel conditions and transmit powers on the application of NOMA to MEC is quite different to those in conventional NOMA scenarios. Computer simulation results are also provided to facilitate the performance evaluation of NOMA-MEC and also verify the accuracy of the developed analytical results.

Massive MIMO relaying with linear precoding in correlated channels under limited feedback

In this paper we study on a massive MIMO relay system with linear precoding under the conditions of imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and per-user channel transmit correlation. In our system the source-relay channels are massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ones and the relay-destination channels are massive multiple-input single-output (MISO) ones. Large random matrix theory (RMT) is used to derive a deterministic equivalent of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at each user in massive MIMO amplify-forward and decode-forward (M-MIMO-ADF) relaying with regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding, as the number of transmit antennas and users M,K approaches to infinity and M>>K. In this paper we obtain a closed-form expression for the deterministic equivalent of h^H_kW(hat)_lh(hat)_k, and we give two theorems and a corollary to derive the deterministic equivalent of the SINR at each user. Simulation results show that the deterministic equivalent of the SINR at each user in M-MIMO-ADF relaying and the results of Theorem 1, Theorem 2, Proposition 1 and Corollary 1 are accurate.

Optimal Throughput Fairness Trade-offs for Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access over Fading Channels

Recently, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted considerable interest as one of the 5G-enabling techniques. However, users with better channel conditions in downlink communications intrinsically benefits from NOMA thanks to successive decoding, judicious designs are required to guarantee user fairness. In this paper, a two-user downlink NOMA system over fading channels is considered. For delay-tolerant transmission, the average sum-rate is maximized subject to both average and peak power constraints as well as a minimum average user rate constraint. The optimal resource allocation is obtained using Lagrangian dual decomposition under full channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), while an effective power allocation policy under partial CSIT is also developed based on analytical results. In parallel, for delay-limited transmission, the sum of delay-limited throughput (DLT) is maximized subject to a maximum allowable user outage constraint under full CSIT, and the analysis for the sum of DLT is also performed under partial CSIT. Furthermore, an optimal orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme is also studied as a benchmark to prove the superiority of NOMA over OMA under full CSIT. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified by simulations via different trade-offs for the average sum-rate (sum-DLT) versus the minimum (maximum) average user rate (outage) requirement.

Towards the Standardization of Non-orthogonal Multiple Access for Next Generation Wireless Networks

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NoMA) as an efficient way of radio resource sharing can root back to the network information theory. For generations of wireless communication systems design, orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes in time, frequency, or code domain have been the main choices due to the limited processing capability in the transceiver hardware, as well as the modest traffic demands in both latency and connectivity. However, for the next generation radio systems, given its vision to connect everything and the much evolved hardware capability, NoMA has been identified as a promising technology to help achieve all the targets in system capacity, user connectivity, and service latency. This article will provide a systematic overview of the state-of-the-art design of the NoMA transmission based on a unified transceiver design framework, the related standardization progress, and some promising use cases in future cellular networks, based on which the interested researchers can get a quick start in this area.

Antenna Selection in Full-Duplex Cooperative NOMA Systems

We investigate the problem of antenna selection (AS) in full-duplex (FD) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where a multi-antenna FD relay assists transmission from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to a far user, while at the same, the BS transmits to a near user. Specifically, based on the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the near and far users, two AS schemes to select a single transmit antenna at both the BS and the relay, respectively, as well as a single receive antenna at relay are proposed. In order to study the ergodic sum rate and outage probability of these AS schemes, we have derived closed-form expressions assuming Rayleigh fading channels. The sum rate and outage probability of the AS schemes are also compared with the optimum selection scheme that maximizes the performance as well as with a random AS scheme. Our results show that the proposed AS schemes can deliver a near-optimal performance for near and far users, respectively.

Cache-Aided Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

In this paper, we propose a novel joint caching and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to facilitate advanced downlink transmission for next generation cellular networks. In addition to reaping the conventional advantages of caching and NOMA transmission, the proposed cache-aided NOMA scheme also exploits cached data for interference cancellation which is not possible with separate caching and NOMA transmission designs. Furthermore, as caching can help to reduce the residual interference power, several decoding orders are feasible at the receivers, and these decoding orders can be flexibly selected for performance optimization. We characterize the achievable rate region of cache-aided NOMA and investigate its benefits for minimizing the time required to complete video file delivery. Our simulation results reveal that, compared to several baseline schemes, the proposed cache-aided NOMA scheme significantly expands the achievable rate region for downlink transmission, which translates into substantially reduced file delivery times.

NOMA Assisted Wireless Caching: Strategies and Performance Analysis

Conventional wireless caching assumes that content can be pushed to local caching infrastructure during off-peak hours in an error-free manner; however, this assumption is not applicable if local caches need to be frequently updated via wireless transmission. This paper investigates a new approach to wireless caching for the case when cache content has to be updated during on-peak hours. Two non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted caching strategies are developed, namely the push-then-deliver strategy and the push-and-deliver strategy. In the push-then-deliver strategy, the NOMA principle is applied to push more content files to the content servers during a short time interval reserved for content pushing in on-peak hours and to provide more connectivity for content delivery, compared to the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) strategy. The push-and-deliver strategy is motivated by the fact that some users' requests cannot be accommodated locally and the base station has to serve them directly. These events during the content delivery phase are exploited as opportunities for content pushing, which further facilitates the frequent update of the files cached at the content servers. It is also shown that this strategy can be straightforwardly extended to device-to-device caching, and various analytical results are developed to illustrate the superiority of the proposed caching strategies compared to OMA based schemes.

Cognitive Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Cooperative Relaying: A New Wireless Frontier for 5G Spectrum Sharing

Two emerging technologies towards 5G wireless networks, namely non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and cognitive radio (CR), will provide more efficient utilization of wireless spectrum in the future. In this article, we investigate the integration of NOMA with CR into a holistic system, namely cognitive NOMA network, for more intelligent spectrum sharing. Design principles of cognitive NOMA networks are perfectly aligned to functionality requirements of 5G wireless networks, such as high spectrum efficiency, massive connectivity, low latency, and better fairness. Three different cognitive NOMA architectures are presented, including underlay NOMA networks, overlay NOMA networks, and CR-inspired NOMA networks. To address inter- and intra-network interference which largely degrade the performance of cognitive NOMA networks, cooperative relaying strategies are proposed. For each cognitive NOMA architecture, our proposed cooperative relaying strategy shows its potential to significantly lower outage probabilities. Furthermore, we discuss open challenges and future research directions on implementation of cognitive NOMA networks.

Joint Transmitter and Receiver Design for Pattern Division Multiple Access

In this paper, a joint transmitter and receiver design for pattern division multiple access (PDMA) is proposed. At the transmitter, pattern mapping utilizes power allocation to improve the overall sum rate, and beam allocation to enhance the access connectivity. At the receiver, hybrid detection utilizes a spatial filter to suppress the inter-beam interference caused by beam domain multiplexing, and successive interference cancellation to remove the intra-beam interference caused by power domain multiplexing. Furthermore, we propose a PDMA joint design approach to optimize pattern mapping based on both the power domain and beam domain. The optimization of power allocation is achieved by maximizing the overall sum rate, and the corresponding optimization problem is shown to be convex theoretically. The optimization of beam allocation is achieved by minimizing the maximum of the inner product of any two beam allocation vectors, and an effective dimension reduction method is proposed through the analysis of pattern structure and proper mathematical manipulations. Simulation results show that the proposed PDMA approach outperforms the orthogonal multiple access and power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access approaches even without any optimization of pattern mapping, and that the optimization of beam allocation yields a significant performance improvement than the optimization of power allocation.

A Novel Network NOMA Scheme for Downlink Coordinated Three-Point Systems

In this paper, we propose a network non-orthogonal multiple access (N-NOMA) technique for the downlink coordinated multipoint (CoMP) communication scenario of a cellular network, with randomly deployed users. In the considered N-NOMA scheme, superposition coding (SC) is employed to serve cell-edge users as well as users close to base stations (BSs) simultaneously, and distributed analog beamforming by the BSs to meet the cell-edge user's quality of service (QoS) requirements. The combination of SC and distributed analog beamforming significantly complicates the expressions for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the reveiver, which makes the performance analysis particularly challenging. However, by using rational approximations, insightful analytical results are obtained in order to characterize the outage performance of the considered N-NOMA scheme. Computer simulation results are provided to show the superior performance of the proposed scheme as well as to demonstrate the accuracy of the analytical results.

Non-orthogonal Multiple Access Assisted Multi-Region Geocast

This work proposes a novel location-based multi-group multicast framework which is termed as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted multi-region geocast. This novel spectrum sharing framework exploits the NOMA technology to realize the simultaneous delivery of different messages to different user groups characterized by different geographical locations. The essence of the proposed framework is that the geographical information of user groups unites NOMA and multi-group multicast to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) and the energy efficiency (EE) of wireless transmissions. Specifically, we investigate the downlink beamforming design of the proposed framework in multiple-input single-output (MISO) settings. The decoding strategy for NOMA is designed and guaranteed by users' geographical information and required quality of service (QoS). The majorization and minimization (MM) algorithm is exploited to solve the non-convex and intractable problems therein. Comprehensive numerical experiments are further provided to show that NOMA holds tremendous promise but also limitations in terms of SE and EE, compared with spatial division multiple access (SDMA) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA).

Antenna Selection in MIMO Non-orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

This paper considers the joint antenna selection (AS) problem for a classical two-user MIMO non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where both the base station (BS) and users (UEs) are equipped with multiple antennas. Specifically, several computationally-efficient AS algorithms are developed for two commonly-used NOMA scenarios: fixed power allocation NOMA (F-NOMA) and cognitive radio-inspired NOMA (CR-NOMA). For the F-NOMA system, two novel AS schemes, namely max-max-max AS (A$^3$-AS) and max-min-max AS (AIA-AS), are proposed to maximize the system sum-rate, without and with the consideration of user fairness, respectively. In the CR-NOMA network, a novel AS algorithm, termed maximum-channel-gain-based AS (MCG-AS), is proposed to maximize the achievable rate of the secondary user, under the condition that the primary user's quality of service requirement is satisfied. The asymptotic closed-form expressions of the average sum-rate for A$^3$-AS and AIA-AS and that of the average rate of the secondary user for MCG-AS are derived, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate that the AIA-AS provides better user-fairness, while the A$^3$-AS achieves a near-optimal sum-rate in F-NOMA systems. For the CR-NOMA scenario, MCG-AS achieves a near-optimal performance in a wide SNR regime. Furthermore, all the proposed AS algorithms yield a significant computational complexity reduction, compared to exhaustive search-based counterparts.

Millimeter-Wave Communication with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for 5G

To further improve the system capacity for 5G, we explore the integration of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in mmWave communications (mmWave-NOMA) for future 5G systems. Compared with the conventional NOMA, the distinguishing feature of mmWave-NOMA is that, it is usually characterized by transmit/receive beamforming with large antenna arrays. In this paper, we focus on the design challenges of mmWave-NOMA due to beamforming. Firstly, we study how beamforming affects the sum-rate performance of mmWave-NOMA, and find that with conventional single-beam forming, the performance may be offset by the relative angle between NOMA users. Then, we consider multi-beam forming for mmWave-NOMA, which is shown to be able to achieve promising performance enhancement as well as robustness. We further investigate the challenging joint design of the intertwined power allocation and user pairing for mmWave-NOMA. We also discuss the challenges and propose some potential solutions in detail. Finally, we consider hybrid spatial division multiple access (SDMA) and NOMA in mmWave communications, where some possible system configurations and the corresponding solutions are discussed to address the multi-user issues including multi-user precoding and multi-user interference (MUI) mitigation.

Short-Packet Communications in Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

This work introduces, for the first time, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) into short-packet communications to achieve low latency in wireless networks. Specifically, we address the optimization of transmission rates and power allocation to maximize the effective throughput of the user with a higher channel gain while guaranteeing the other user achieving a certain level of effective throughput. To demonstrate the benefits of NOMA, we analyze the performance of orthogonal multiple access (OMA) as a benchmark. Our examination shows that NOMA can significantly outperform OMA by achieving a higher effective throughput with the same latency or incurring a lower latency to achieve the same effective throughput targets. Surprisingly, we find that the performance gap between NOMA and OMA becomes more prominent when the effective throughput targets at the two users become closer to each other. This demonstrates that NOMA can significantly reduce the latency in the context of short-packet communications with practical constraints.

Antenna Selection in MIMO Cognitive Radio-Inspired NOMA Systems

This letter investigates a joint antenna selection (AS) problem for a MIMO cognitive radio-inspired non-orthogonal multiple access (CR-NOMA) network. In particular, a new computationally efficient joint AS algorithm, namely subset-based joint AS (SJ-AS), is proposed to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio of the secondary user under the condition that the quality of service (QoS) of the primary user is satisfied. The asymptotic closed-form expression of the outage performance for SJ-AS is derived, and the minimal outage probability achieved by SJ-AS among all possible joint AS schemes is proved. The provided numerical results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme.
