A Survey of Downlink Non-orthogonal Multiple Access for 5G Wireless Communication Networks

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recognized as a promising multiple access technique for the next generation cellular communication networks. In this paper, we first discuss a simple NOMA model with two users served by a single-carrier simultaneously to illustrate its basic principles. Then, a more general model with multicarrier serving an arbitrary number of users on each subcarrier is also discussed. An overview of existing works on performance analysis, resource allocation, and multiple-input multiple-output NOMA are summarized and discussed. Furthermore, we discuss the key features of NOMA and its potential research challenges.

Optimal Joint Power and Subcarrier Allocation for Full-Duplex Multicarrier Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

In this paper, we investigate resource allocation algorithm design for multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) systems employing a full-duplex (FD) base station (BS) for serving multiple half-duplex (HD) downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) users simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is obtained from the solution of a non-convex optimization problem for the maximization of the weighted sum system throughput. We apply monotonic optimization to develop an optimal joint power and subcarrier allocation policy. The optimal resource allocation policy serves as a system performance benchmark due to its high computational complexity. Furthermore, a suboptimal iterative scheme based on successive convex approximation is proposed to strike a balance between computational complexity and optimality. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed suboptimal algorithm achieves a close-to-optimal performance. Besides, FD MC-NOMA systems employing the proposed resource allocation algorithms provide a substantial system throughput improvement compared to conventional HD multicarrier orthogonal multiple access (MC-OMA) systems and other baseline schemes. Also, our results unveil that the proposed FD MC-NOMA systems achieve a fairer resource allocation compared to traditional HD MC-OMA systems.

On the Outage Performance of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with One-Bit Feedback

In this paper, the outage performance of downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is investigated for the case where each user feeds back only one bit of its channel state information (CSI) to the base station. Conventionally, opportunistic one-bit feedback has been used in fading broadcast channels to select only one user for transmission. In contrast, the considered NOMA scheme adopts superposition coding to serve all users simultaneously in order to improve user fairness. A closed-form expression for the common outage probability (COP) is derived, along with the optimal diversity gains under two types of power constraints. Particularly, it is demonstrated that the diversity gain under a long-term power constraint is twice as large as that under a short-term power constraint. Furthermore, we study dynamic power allocation optimization for minimizing the COP, based on one-bit CSI feedback. This problem is challenging since the objective function is non-convex; however, under the short-term power constraint, we demonstrate that the original problem can be transformed into a set of convex problems. Under the long-term power constraint, an asymptotically optimal solution is obtained for high signal-to-noise ratio.

Lattice Partition Multiple Access: A New Method of Downlink Non-orthogonal Multiuser Transmissions

In this paper, we propose a new downlink non-orthogonal multiuser superposition transmission scheme for future 5G cellular networks, which we refer to as the lattice partition multiple access (LPMA). In this proposed design, the base station transmits multilevel lattice codes for multiple users. Each user's code level corresponds to a distinct prime and is weighted by a product of all distinct primes of the other users excluding its own. Due to the structural property of lattice codes, each user can cancel out the interference from the other code levels by using the modulo lattice operation in a successive/parallel manner. LPMA can overcome the drawback of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which arises when users have similar channel conditions. We demonstrate that the proposed LPMA shows a clear throughput enhancement over the current NOMA scheme.

Relay Selection for Cooperative NOMA

This letter studies the impact of relay selection (RS) on the performance of cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In particular, a two-stage RS strategy is proposed, and analytical results are developed to demonstrate that this two-stage strategy can achieve the minimal outage probability among all possible RS schemes, and realize the maximal diversity gain. The provided simulation results show that cooperative NOMA with this two-stage RS scheme outperforms that with the conventional max-min approach, and can also yield a significant performance gain over orthogonal multiple access.

In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation algorithm design for multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) systems. The proposed algorithm is obtained from the solution of a non-convex optimization problem for the maximization of the weighted system throughput. We employ monotonic optimization to develop the optimal joint power and subcarrier allocation policy. The optimal resource allocation policy serves as a performance benchmark due to its high complexity. Furthermore, to strike a balance between computational complexity and optimality, a suboptimal scheme with low computational complexity is proposed. Cluster Content Caching: An Energy-Efficient Approach to Improve Quality of Service in Cloud Radio Access Networks

In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), a substantial amount of data must be exchanged in both backhaul and fronthaul links, which causes high power consumption and poor quality of service (QoS) experience for real-time services. To solve this problem, a cluster content caching structure is proposed in this paper, which takes full advantage of distributed caching and centralized signal processing. In particular, redundant traffic on the backhaul can be reduced because the cluster content cache provides a part of required content objects for remote radio heads (RRHs) connected to a common edge cloud. Tractable expressions for both effective capacity and energy efficiency performance are derived, which show that the proposed structure can improve QoS guarantees with a lower power cost of local storage. Furthermore, to fully explore the potential of the proposed cluster content caching structure, the joint design of resource allocation and RRH association is optimized, and two distributed algorithms are accordingly proposed. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analytical results and show the performance gains achieved by cluster content caching in C-RANs.

Secrecy Sum Rate Maximization in Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recognized as a promising technique for providing high data rates in 5G systems. This letter is to study physical layer security in a single-input single-output (SISO) NOMA system consisting of a transmitter, multiple legitimate users and an eavesdropper. The aim of this letter is to maximize the secrecy sum rate (SSR) of the NOMA system subject to the users' quality of service (QoS) requirements. We firstly identify the feasible region of the transmit power for satisfying all users' QoS requirements. Then we derive the closed-form expression of an optimal power allocation policy that maximizes the SSR. Numerical results are provided to show a significant SSR improvement by NOMA compared with conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA).

Wireless Powered Communications with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

We study a wireless-powered uplink communication system with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), consisting of one base station and multiple energy harvesting users. More specifically, we focus on the individual data rate optimization and fairness improvement and we show that the formulated problems can be optimally and efficiently solved by either linear programming or convex optimization. In the provided analysis, two types of decoding order strategies are considered, namely fixed decoding order and time- sharing. Furthermore, we propose an efficient greedy algorithm, which is suitable for the practical implementation of the time-sharing strategy. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the baseline orthogonal multiple access scheme. More specifically, it is shown that NOMA offers a considerable improvement in throughput, fairness, and energy efficiency. Also, the dependence among system throughput, minimum individual data rate, and harvested energy is revealed, as well as an interesting trade-off between rates and energy efficiency. Finally, the convergence speed of the proposed greedy algorithm is evaluated, and it is shown that the required number of iterations is linear with respect to the number of users.

Energy-Efficient Joint Congestion Control and Resource Optimization in Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks

The heterogeneous cloud radio access network (HCRAN) is a promising paradigm which integrates the advantages of cloud radio access network (C-RAN) and heterogeneous network (HetNet). In this paper, we study the joint congestion control and resource optimization to explore the energy efficiency (EE)-guaranteed tradeoff between throughput utility and delay performance in a downlink slotted H-CRAN. We formulate the considered problem as a stochastic optimization problem, which maximizes the utility of average throughput and maintains the network stability subject to required EE constraint and transmit power consumption constraints by traffic admission control, user association, resource block allocation and power allocation. Leveraging on the Lyapunov optimization technique, the stochastic optimization problem can be transformed and decomposed into three separate subproblems which can be solved concurrently at each slot. The third mixed-integer nonconvex subproblem is efficiently solved utilizing the continuity relaxation of binary variables and the Lagrange dual decomposition method. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposal can quantitatively control the throughput-delay performance tradeoff with required EE performance. Simulation results consolidate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the advantages of the proposal from the prospective of queue stability and power consumption.

Non-orthogonal Multiple Access in Large-Scale Underlay Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is applied to large-scale underlay cognitive radio (CR) networks with randomly deployed users. In order to characterize the performance of the considered network, new closed-form expressions of the outage probability are derived using stochastic-geometry. More importantly, by carrying out the diversity analysis, new insights are obtained under the two scenarios with different power constraints: 1) fixed transmit power of the primary transmitters (PTs), and 2) transmit power of the PTs being proportional to that of the secondary base station. For the first scenario, a diversity order of $m$ is experienced at the $m$-th ordered NOMA user. For the second scenario, there is an asymptotic error floor for the outage probability. Simulation results are provided to verify the accuracy of the derived results. A pivotal conclusion is reached that by carefully designing target data rates and power allocation coefficients of users, NOMA can outperform conventional orthogonal multiple access in underlay CR networks.

In this letter, a low-feedback non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme using massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is proposed. In particular, the proposed scheme can decompose a massive-MIMO-NOMA system into multiple separated single-input single-output NOMA channels, and analytical results are developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme for two scenarios, with perfect user ordering and with one-bit feedback, respectively.

Cooperative Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer

In this paper, the application of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) to non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks in which users are spatially randomly located is investigated. A new cooperative SWIPT NOMA protocol is proposed, in which near NOMA users that are close to the source act as energy harvesting relays to help far NOMA users. Since the locations of users have a significant impact on the performance, three user selection schemes based on the user distances from the base station are proposed. To characterize the performance of the proposed selection schemes, closed-form expressions for the outage probability and system throughput are derived. These analytical results demonstrate that the use of SWIPT will not jeopardize the diversity gain compared to the conventional NOMA. The proposed results confirm that the opportunistic use of node locations for user selection can achieve low outage probability and deliver superior throughput in comparison to the random selection scheme.

A General MIMO Framework for NOMA Downlink and Uplink Transmission Based on Signal Alignment

The application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems is important to enhance the performance gains of NOMA. In this paper, a novel MIMO-NOMA framework for downlink and uplink transmission is proposed by applying the concept of signal alignment. By using stochastic geometry, closed-form analytical results are developed to facilitate the performance evaluation of the proposed framework for randomly deployed users and interferers. The impact of different power allocation strategies, such as fixed power allocation and cognitive radio inspired power allocation, on the performance of MIMO-NOMA is also investigated. Computer simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework and the accuracy of the developed analytical results.

A Minorization-Maximization Method for Optimizing Sum Rate in Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems have the potential to deliver higher system throughput, compared to contemporary orthogonal multiple access techniques. For a linearly precoded multiple-input multiple-output (MISO) system, we study the downlink sum rate maximization problem, when the NOMA principles are applied. Being a non-convex and intractable optimization problem,we resort to approximate it with a minorization-maximization algorithm (MMA), which is a widely used tool in statistics. In each step of the MMA, we solve a second-order cone program, such that the feasibility set in each step contains that of the previous one, and is always guaranteed to be a subset of the feasibility set of the original problem. It should be noted that the algorithm takes a few iterations to converge. Furthermore, we study the conditions under which the achievable rates maximization can be further simplified to a low complexity design problem, and we compute the probability of occurrence of this event. Numerical examples are conducted to show a comparison of the proposed approach against conventional multiple access systems. NOMA is reported to provide better spectral and power efficiency with a polynomial time computational complexity.

NOMA: An Information Theoretic Perspective

In this letter, the performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is investigated from an information theoretic perspective. The relationships among the capacity region of broadcast channels and two rate regions achieved by NOMA and time-division multiple access (TDMA) are illustrated first. Then, the performance of NOMA is evaluated by considering TDMA as the benchmark, where both the sum rate and the individual user rates are used as the criteria. In a wireless downlink scenario with user pairing, the developed analytical results show that NOMA can outperform TDMA not only for the sum rate but also for each user's individual rate, particularly when the difference between the users' channels is large.

The Private Key Capacity of a Cooperative Pairwise-Independent Network

This paper studies the private key generation of a cooperative pairwise-independent network (PIN) with M+2 terminals (Alice, Bob and M relays), M >= 2. In this PIN, the correlated sources observed by every pair of terminals are independent of those sources observed by any other pair of terminal. All the terminals can communicate with each other over a public channel which is also observed by Eve noiselessly. The objective is to generate a private key between Alice and Bob under the help of the M relays; such a private key needs to be protected not only from Eve but also from individual relays simultaneously. The private key capacity of this PIN model is established, whose lower bound is obtained by proposing a novel random binning (RB) based key generation algorithm, and the upper bound is obtained based on the construction of M enhanced source models. The two bounds are shown to be exactly the same. Then, we consider a cooperative wireless network and use the estimates of fading channels to generate private keys. It has been shown that the proposed RB-based algorithm can achieve a multiplexing gain M-1, an improvement in comparison with the existing XOR- based algorithm whose achievable multiplexing gain is about [M]/2.

Dynamic Power Splitting Policies for AF Relay Networks with Wireless Energy Harvesting

Wireless energy harvesting (WEH) provides an exciting way to supply energy for relay nodes to forward information for the source-destination pairs. In this paper, we investigate the problem on how the relay node dynamically adjusts the power splitting ratio of information transmission (IT) and energy harvesting (EH) in order to achieve the optimal outage performance. According to the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) at the relay, optimal dynamic power splitting policy with full CSI and partial CSI are both provided. Finally, through simulations, the proposed power splitting policies can improve the outage performances and the policy with full CSI achieves the best performance. It is also shown that the policy with partial CSI can approach the policy with full CSI closely and incurs far less system overhead.
