Rate Region of ISAC for Pinching-Antenna Systems

The Pinching-Antenna SyStem (PASS) reconstructs wireless channels through \emph{pinching beamforming}, wherein the activated positions of pinching antennas along dielectric waveguides are optimized to shape the radiation pattern. The aim of this article is to analyze the performance limits of employing PASS in integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). Specifically, a PASS-assisted ISAC system is considered, where a pinched waveguide is utilized to simultaneously communicate with a user and sense a target. Closed-form expressions for the achievable communication rate (CR) and sensing rate (SR) are derived to characterize the information-theoretic limits of this dual-functional operation. \romannumeral1) For the single-pinch case, closed-form solutions for the optimal pinching antenna location are derived under \emph{sensing-centric (S-C)}, \emph{communications-centric (C-C)}, and \emph{Pareto-optimal} designs. On this basis, the CR-SR trade-off is characterized by deriving the full CR-SR rate region, which is shown to encompass that of conventional fixed-antenna systems. \romannumeral2) For the multiple-pinch case, an antenna location refinement method is applied to obtain the optimal C-C and S-C pinching beamformers. As a further advance, inner and outer bounds on the achievable CR-SR region are derived using an element-wise alternating optimization technique and by invoking Cauchy-Schwarz and Karamata's inequalities, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate that: \romannumeral1) the derived bounds closely approximate the true CR-SR region; and \romannumeral2) PASS can achieve a significantly larger rate region than conventional-antenna systems.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for NOMA-Assisted Uplink Pinching-Antenna Systems

The pinching-antenna architecture has emerged as a promising solution for reconfiguring wireless propagation environments and enhancing system performance. While prior research has primarily focused on sum-rate maximization or transmit power minimization of pinching-antenna systems, the critical aspect of energy efficiency (EE) has received limited attention. Given the increasing importance of EE in future wireless communication networks, this work investigates EE optimization in a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-assisted multi-user pinching-antenna uplink system. The problem entails the joint optimization of the users' transmit power and the pinching-antenna position. The resulting optimization problem is non-convex due to tightly coupled variables. To tackle this, we employ an alternating optimization framework to decompose the original problem into two subproblems: one focusing on power allocation and the other on antenna positioning. A low-complexity optimal solution is derived for the power allocation subproblem, while the pinching-antenna positioning subproblem is addressed using a particle swarm optimization algorithm to obtain a high-quality near-optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms both conventional-antenna configurations and orthogonal multiple access-based pinching-antenna systems in terms of EE.

A Robust Design for BackCom Assisted Hybrid NOMA

Hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (H-NOMA) is inherently an enabler of massive machine type communications, a key use case for sixth-generation (6G) systems. Together with backscatter communication (BackCom), it seamlessly integrates with the traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques to yield superior performance gains. In this paper, we study BackCom assisted H-NOMA uplink transmission with the aim of minimizing power with imperfect channel state information (CSI), where a generalized representation for channel estimation error models is used. The considered power minimization problem with aggregate data constraints is both non-convex and intractable. For the considered imperfect CSI models, we use Lagrange duality and the majorization-minimization principle to produce a conservative approximation of the original problem. The conservative formulation is relaxed by incorporating slack variables and a penalized objective. We solve the penalized tractable approximation using a provably convergent algorithm with polynomial complexity. Our results highlight that, despite being conservative, the proposed solution results in a similar power consumption as for the nominal power minimization problem without channel uncertainties. Additionally, robust H-NOMA is shown to almost always yield more power efficiency than the OMA case. Moreover, the robustness of the proposed solution is manifested by a high probability of feasibility of the robust design compared to the OMA and the nominal one.

Improved ALOHA-based URA with Index Modulation: Efficient Decoding and Analysis

In this paper, an improved ALOHA-based unsourced random access (URA) scheme is proposed in MIMO channels. The channel coherent interval is divided into multiple sub-slots and each active user selects several sub-slots to send its codeword, namely, the channel access pattern. To be more specific, the data stream of each active user is divided into three parts. The first part is mapped as the compressed sensing (CS) pilot, which also serves for the consequent channel estimation. The second part is modulated by binary phase shift keying (BPSK). The obtained CS pilot and the antipodal BPSK signal are concatenated as its codeword. After that, the codeword of each active user is sent repeatedly based on its channel access pattern, which is determined by the third part of the information bits, namely, index modulation (IM). On the receiver side, a hard decision-based decoder is proposed which includes the CS decoder, maximal likelihood (ML)-based superposed codeword decomposer (SCD), and IM demodulator. To further reduce the complexity of the proposed decoder, a simplified SCD based on convex approximation is considered. The performance analysis is also provided. The exhaustive computer simulations confirm the superiority of our proposal.

Antenna Activation and Resource Allocation in Multi-Waveguide Pinching-Antenna Systems

Pinching antennas, as a novel flexible-antenna technology capable of establishing line of sight (LoS) connections and effectively mitigating large-scale path loss, have recently attracted considerable research interests. However, the implementation of ideal pinching-antenna systems involves determining and adjusting pinching antennas to an arbitrary position on waveguides, which presents challenges to both practical deployment and related optimization. This paper investigates a practical pinching-antennas system in multi-waveguide scenarios, where pinching antennas are installed at pre-configured discrete positions to serve downlink users with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). To improve system throughput, a sophisticated optimization problem is formulated by jointly considering waveguide assignment, antenna activation, successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding order design, and power allocation. By treating waveguide assignment and antenna activation as two coalition-formation games, a novel game-theoretic algorithm is developed, in which the optimal decoding order is derived and incorporated. For power allocation, monotonic optimization and successive convex approximation (SCA) are employed to construct global optimal and low-complexity solutions, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the NOMA-based pinching-antenna system exhibits superior performance compared to the considered benchmark systems, and the proposed solutions provide significant improvement in terms of sum rate and outage probability.

Age of Information Analysis for NOMA-Assisted Grant-Free Transmissions with Randomly Arrived Packets

This paper investigates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to grant-free transmissions to reduce the age of information (AoI) in uplink status update systems, where multiple sources upload their {status updates} to {a common} receiver. Unlike existing studies which {adopted} the idealized generate-at-will (GAW) model, {i.e., a status} update data can be generated and transmitted at any time, this paper utilizes a more practical model {to characterize} the inherent randomness of the generation of the status updating data packets. A rigorous analytical framework is established to precisely evaluate the average AoI achieved by the NOMA-assisted grant-free schemes for both {the} cases with and without retransmission. The impact of the choice of the probability {of transmission} on the average AoI is investigated. Extensive simulation results are provided to validate the accuracy of the developed analysis. It is shown that NOMA-assisted schemes are more superior in reducing AoI{, compared} to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based schemes. In addition, compared to schemes without retransmission, the AoI performance {of} the schemes with retransmission can {be improved} significantly when the status update generation rate is low or the user density is relatively high.

Pinching-Antenna Assisted Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer

This letter introduces a novel pinching-antenna-system (PASS) assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), where multiple pinching antennas (PAs) are strategically activiated on a waveguide to facilitate information transmission to multiple information receivers (IRs) and power transfer to multiple energy receivers (ERs) simultaneously. Leveraging the single-waveguide architecture, non-orthogonal multiple access is employed to enable the superposed transmission of information signals, eliminating the need for dedicated energy carriers by concurrently serving both the IRs and the ERs. In this letter, an optimization problem is first formulated with an objective is to maximize the sum power received at the ERs via joint optimizing the IRs power allocation and the PAs positioning. Given the challenging non-convex nature of the formulated optimization problem, it is decoupled into two sub-problems which are solved alternatively. Specifically, the power allocation subproblem is recast a convex optimization problem, and hence can be solved efficiently. Furthermore, we propose a high-precision element-wise algorithm and a low-complexity linearly decreasing weight particle swarm optimization algorithm to solve the position optimization sub-problem. The numerical results demonstrate that PAs assisted SWIPT can achieve a remarkable performance gain compared to conventional system.

On the performance of downlink NOMA in underlay spectrum sharing

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and spectrum sharing are two potential technologies for providing massive connectivity in beyond fifth-generation (B5G) networks. In this paper, we present the performance analysis of a multi-antenna-assisted two-user downlink NOMA system in an underlay spectrum sharing system. We derive closed-form expressions for the average achievable sum-rate and outage probability of the secondary network under a peak interference constraint and/or peak power constraint, depending on the availability of channel state information (CSI) of the interference link between secondary transmitter (ST) and primary receiver (PR). For the case where the ST has a fixed power budget, we show that performance can be divided into two specific regimes, where either the interference constraint or the power constraint primarily dictates the performance. Our results confirm that the NOMA-based underlay spectrum sharing system significantly outperforms its orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based counterpart, by achieving higher average sum-rate and lower outage probability. We also show the effect of information loss at the ST in terms of CSI of the link between the ST and PR on the system performance. Moreover, we also present closed-form expressions for the optimal power allocation coefficient that minimizes the outage probability of the NOMA system for the special case where the secondary users are each equipped with a single antenna. A close agreement between the simulation and analytical results confirms the correctness of the presented analysis.

CAPA: Continuous-Aperture Arrays for Revolutionizing 6G Wireless Communications

In this paper, a novel continuous-aperture array (CAPA)-based wireless communication architecture is proposed, which relies on an electrically large aperture with a continuous current distribution. First, an existing prototype of CAPA is reviewed, followed by the potential benefits and key motivations for employing CAPAs in wireless communications. Then, three practical hardware implementation approaches for CAPAs are introduced based on electronic, optical, and acoustic materials. Furthermore, several beamforming approaches are proposed to optimize the continuous current distributions of CAPAs, which are fundamentally different from those used for conventional spatially discrete arrays (SPDAs). Numerical results are provided to demonstrate their key features in low complexity and near-optimality. Based on these proposed approaches, the performance gains of CAPAs over SPDAs are revealed in terms of channel capacity as well as diversity-multiplexing gains. Finally, several open research problems in CAPA are highlighted.

Array Gain for Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)

Pinching antennas is a novel flexible-antenna technology, which can be realized by employing small dielectric particles on a waveguide. The aim of this letter is to characterize the array gain achieved by pinching-antenna systems (PASS). A closed-form upper bound on the array gain is derived by fixing the inter-antenna spacing. Asymptotic analyses of this bound are conducted by considering an infinitely large number of antennas, demonstrating the existence of an optimal number of antennas that maximizes the array gain. To approach this bound, an antenna position refinement method is introduced. The relationship between the array gain and inter-antenna spacing is further explored by incorporating the effect of mutual coupling. It is proven that there also exists an optimal inter-antenna spacing that maximizes the array gain. Numerical results demonstrate that by optimizing the number of antennas and inter-antenna spacing, PASS can achieve a significantly larger array gain than conventional-antenna systems.

Channel Estimation for mmWave Pinching-Antenna Systems

The full potential of pinching-antenna systems (PAS) can be unblocked if pinching antennas can be accurately activated at positions tailored for the serving users', which means that acquiring accurate channel state information (CSI) at arbitrary positions along the waveguide is essential for the precise placement of antennas. In this work, we propose an innovative channel estimation scheme for millimeter-wave (mmWave) PAS. The proposed approach requires activating only a small number of pinching antennas, thereby limiting antenna switching and pilot overhead. Specifically, a base station (BS) equipped with a waveguide selectively activates subarrays located near and far from the feed point, each comprising a small number of pinching antennas. This configuration effectively emulates a large-aperture array, enabling high-accuracy estimation of multipath propagation parameters, including angles, delays, and path gains. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves accurate CSI estimation and data rates while effectively reducing hardware switching and pilot overhead.

Pinching-Antenna Assisted ISAC: A CRLB Perspective

Recently, pinching antennas have attracted significant research interest due to their capability to reconfigure wireless channels as well as their array configuration flexibility. This letter focuses on how these features can be used to support integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) from the Cramer Rao lower bound (CRLB) perspective. In particular, the CRLB achieved by pinching antennas is first derived and then compared to that of conventional antennas. The presented analytical and simulation results demonstrate that using pinching antennas can significantly reduce CRLB and, hence, enhance positioning accuracy. In addition, this letter also reveals that the low-cost and reconfigurability features of pinching antennas can be utilized to realize flexible user-centric positioning.

MIMO-PASS: Uplink and Downlink Transmission via MIMO Pinching-Antenna Systems

Pinching-antenna systems (PASSs) are a recent flexible-antenna technology that is realized by attaching simple components, referred to as pinching elements, to dielectric waveguides. This work explores the potential of deploying PASS for uplink and downlink transmission in multiuser MIMO settings. For downlink PASS-aided communication, we formulate the optimal hybrid beamforming, in which the digital precoding matrix at the access point and the location of pinching elements on the waveguides are jointly optimized to maximize the achievable weighted sum-rate. Invoking fractional programming and Gauss-Seidel approach, we propose two low-complexity algorithms to iteratively update the precoding matrix and activated locations of the pinching elements. We further study uplink transmission aided by a PASS, where an iterative scheme is designed to address the underlying hybrid multiuser detection problem. We validate the proposed schemes through extensive numerical experiments. The results demonstrate that using a PASS, the throughput in both uplink and downlink is boosted significantly as compared with baseline MIMO architectures, such as massive MIMO~and classical hybrid analog-digital designs. This highlights the great potential of PASSs, making it a promising reconfigurable antenna technology for next-generation wireless systems.

Minimum Data Rate Maximization for Uplink Pinching-Antenna Systems

This paper addresses, for the first time, the uplink performance optimization of multi-user pinching-antenna (PA) systems, recently developed for next-generation wireless networks. By leveraging the unique capabilities of PAs to dynamically configure wireless channels, we focus on maximizing the minimum achievable data rate between devices to achieve a balanced trade-off between throughput and fairness. An effective approach is proposed that separately optimizes the positions of the PAs and the resource allocation. The antenna positioning problem is reformulated into a convex one, while a closed-form solution is provided for the resource allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the investigated system using the proposed algorithm over corresponding counterparts, emphasizing the significant potential of PA systems for robust and efficient uplink communication in next-generation wireless networks.

A Low-Complexity Placement Design of Pinching-Antenna Systems

Pinching-antenna systems have recently been proposed as a new candidate for flexible-antenna systems, not only inheriting the reconfiguration capability but also offering a unique feature: establishing line-of-sight links to mitigate large-scale path loss. However, sophisticated optimization of the placement of pinching antennas has very high complexity, which is challenging for practical implementation. This paper proposes a low-complexity placement design, providing the closed-form expression of the placement of pinching antennas, to maximize the sum rate of multiple downlink users. Orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are both investigated when the pinching-antenna system is only equipped with a single antenna and only the OMA case is studied when there are multiple antennas equipped by the pinching-antenna system. Simulation results indicate pinching-antenna systems can outperform conventional fixed-antenna systems and are more suitable for large service areas.

Rate Maximization for Downlink Pinching-Antenna Systems

In this letter, we consider a new type of flexible-antenna system, termed pinching-antenna, where multiple low-cost pinching antennas, realized by activating small dielectric particles on a dielectric waveguide, are jointly used to serve a single-antenna user. Our goal is to maximize the downlink transmission rate by optimizing the locations of the pinching antennas. However, these locations affect both the path losses and the phase shifts of the user's effective channel gain, making the problem challenging to solve. To address this challenge and solve the problem in a low complexity manner, a relaxed optimization problem is developed that minimizes the impact of path loss while ensuring that the received signals at the user are constructive. This approach leads to a two-stage algorithm: in the first stage, the locations of the pinching antennas are optimized to minimize the large-scale path loss; in the second stage, the antenna locations are refined to maximize the received signal strength. Simulation results show that pinching-antenna systems significantly outperform conventional fixed-location antenna systems, and the proposed algorithm achieves nearly the same performance as the highly complex exhaustive search-based benchmark.

Beam Training for Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)

This article investigates the beam training design problems for pinching-antenna systems (PASS), where single-waveguide-single-user (SWSU), single-waveguide-multi-user (SWMU) and multi-waveguide-multi-user (MWMU) scenarios are considered. For SWSU-PASS, we design a scalable codebook, based on which we propose a three-stage beam training (3SBT) scheme. Specifically, 1) firstly, the 3SBT scheme utilizes one activated pinching antenna to obtain a coarse one-dimensional location at the first stage; 2) secondly, it achieves further phase matching with an increased number of activated antennas at the second stage; 3) finally, it realizes precise beam alignment through an exhaustive search at the third stage. For SWMU-PASS, based on the scalable codebook design, we propose an improved 3SBT scheme to support non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission. For MWMU-PASS, we first present a generalized expression of the received signal based on the partially-connected hybrid beamforming structure. Furthermore, we introduce an increased-dimensional scalable codebook design, based on which an increased-dimensional 3SBT scheme is proposed. Numerical results reveal that: i) the proposed beam training scheme can significantly reduce the training overhead compared to the two-dimensional exhaustive search, while maintaining reasonable rate performance; ii) compared to fixed-location pinching antennas and conventional array antennas, the proposed dynamic pinching antennas yield better flexibility and improved performance.
