Graph Neural Network Enabled Pinching Antennas

The pinching-antenna system is a novel flexible-antenna technology, which has the capabilities not only to combat large-scale path loss, but also to reconfigure the antenna array in a flexible manner. The key idea of pinching antennas is to apply small dielectric particles on a waveguide of arbitrary length, so that they can be positioned close to users to avoid significant large-scale path loss. This paper investigates the graph neural network (GNN) enabled transmit design for the joint optimization of antenna placement and power allocation in pinching-antenna systems. We formulate the downlink communication system equipped with pinching antennas as a bipartite graph, and propose a graph attention network (GAT) based model, termed bipartite GAT (BGAT), to solve an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem. With the tailored readout processes, the BGAT guarantees a feasible solution, which also facilitates the unsupervised training. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of pinching antennas in enhancing the system EE as well as the proposed BGAT in terms of optimality, scalability and computational efficiency.

NOMANet: A Graph Neural Network Enabled Power Allocation Scheme for NOMA

This paper proposes a graph neural network (GNN) enabled power allocation scheme for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. In particular, a downlink scenario with one base station serving multiple users over several subchannels is considered, where the number of subchannels is less than the number of users, and thus, some users have to share a subchannel via NOMA. Our goal is to maximize the system energy efficiency subject to the rate requirement of each user and the overall budget. We propose a deep learning based approach termed NOMA net (NOMANet) to address the considered problem. Particularly, NOMANet is GNN-based, which maps channel state information to the desired power allocation scheme for all subchannels. The multi-head attention and the residual/dense connection are adopted to enhance the feature extraction. The output of NOMANet is guaranteed to be feasible via the customized activation function and the penalty method. Numerical results show that NOMANet trained unsupervised achieves performance close to that of the successive convex approximation method but with a faster inference speed by about $700$ times. Besides, NOMANet is featured by its scalability to both users and subchannels.

ICGNN: Graph Neural Network Enabled Scalable Beamforming for MISO Interference Channels

This paper investigates the graph neural network (GNN)-enabled beamforming design for interference channels. We propose a model termed interference channel GNN (ICGNN) to solve a quality-of-service constrained energy efficiency maximization problem. The ICGNN is two-stage, where the direction and power parts of beamforming vectors are learned separately but trained jointly via unsupervised learning. By formulating the dimensionality of features independent of the transceiver pairs, the ICGNN is scalable with the number of transceiver pairs. Besides, to improve the performance of the ICGNN, the hybrid maximum ratio transmission and zero-forcing scheme reduces the output ports, the feature enhancement module unifies the two types of links into one type, the subgraph representation enhances the message passing efficiency, and the multi-head attention and residual connection facilitate the feature extracting. Furthermore, we present the over-the-air distributed implementation of the ICGNN. Ablation studies validate the effectiveness of key components in the ICGNN. Numerical results also demonstrate the capability of ICGNN in achieving near-optimal performance with an average inference time less than 0.1 ms. The scalability of ICGNN for unseen problem sizes is evaluated and enhanced by transfer learning with limited fine-tuning cost. The results of the centralized and distributed implementations of ICGNN are illustrated.

Downlink Beamforming with Pinching-Antenna Assisted MIMO Systems

Pinching antennas have been recently proposed as a promising flexible-antenna technology, which can be implemented by attaching low-cost pinching elements to dielectric waveguides. This work explores the potential of employing pinching antenna systems (PASs) for downlink transmission in a multiuser MIMO setting. We consider the problem of hybrid beamforming, where the digital precoder at the access point and the activated locations of the pinching elements are jointly optimized to maximize the achievable weighted sum-rate. Invoking fractional programming, a novel low-complexity algorithm is developed to iteratively update the precoding matrix and the locations of the pinching antennas. We validate the proposed scheme through extensive numerical experiments. Our investigations demonstrate that using PAS the system throughput can be significantly boosted as compared with the conventional fixed-location antenna systems, enlightening the potential of PAS as an enabling candidate for next-generation wireless networks.

Pinching Antennas: Principles, Applications and Challenges

Flexible-antenna systems, such as fluid antennas and movable antennas, have been recognized as key enabling technologies for sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, as they can intelligently reconfigure the effective channel gains of the users and hence significantly improve their data transmission capabilities. However, existing flexible-antenna systems have been designed to combat small-scale fading in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) conditions. As a result, they lack the ability to establish line-of-sight links, which are typically 100 times stronger than NLoS links. In addition, existing flexible-antenna systems have limited flexibility, where adding/removing an antenna is not straightforward. This article introduces an innovative flexible-antenna system called pinching antennas, which are realized by applying small dielectric particles to waveguides. We first describe the basics of pinching-antenna systems and their ability to provide strong LoS links by deploying pinching antennas close to the users as well as their capability to scale up/down the antenna system. We then focus on communication scenarios with different numbers of waveguides and pinching antennas, where innovative approaches to implement multiple-input multiple-output and non-orthogonal multiple access are discussed. In addition, promising 6G-related applications of pinching antennas, including integrated sensing and communication and next-generation multiple access, are presented. Finally, important directions for future research, such as waveguide deployment and channel estimation, are highlighted.

The dataset includes a diverse set of multi-hop questions, including true/false and multiple-choice types, spanning varying difficulty levels from easy to hard. By utilizing advanced language models for entity extraction and question generation, rigorous data curation processes are employed to maintain high quality and relevance. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the fine-tuned models with the proposed methodologies on practical tasks, we also consider different tasks, including summarizing optimization problems from technical papers and solving the mathematical problems related to non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which are generated by using the proposed multi-agent framework. Simulation results show significant performance gain in summarization tasks with 20.9\% in the ROUGE-L metrics. We also study the scaling laws of fine-tuning LLMs and the challenges LLMs face in the field of wireless communications, offering insights into their adaptation to wireless communication tasks. This dataset and fine-tuning methodology aim to enhance the training and evaluation of LLMs, contributing to advancements in LLMs for wireless communication research and applications.

Some classes of permutation pentanomials

For each prime p other than 3, and each power q=p^k, we present two large classes of permutation polynomials over F_{q^2} of the form X^r B(X^{q-1}) which have at most five terms, where B(X) is a polynomial with coefficients in {1,-1}. The special case p=2 of our results comprises a vast generalization of 76 recent results and conjectures in the literature. In case p>2, no instances of our permutation polynomials have appeared in the literature, and the construction of such polynomials had been posed as an open problem. Our proofs are short and involve no computations, in contrast to the proofs of many of the special cases of our results which were published previously.

Antenna Activation for NOMA Assisted Pinching-Antenna Systems

In this letter, a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted downlink pinching-antenna system is investigated, where multiple pinching antennas can be activated at pre-configured positions along a dielectric waveguide to serve users via NOMA. In particular, the objective of this letter is to study at what locations and how many pinching antennas should be activated in order to maximize the system throughput. To this end, a sum rate maximization problem with antenna activation is formulated. With the help of matching theory, the formulated problem can be recast as a one-sided one-to-one matching, for which a low-complexity algorithm is developed. Simulation results indicate that the considered NOMA assisted pinching-antenna system can outperform conventional fixed-antenna systems in terms of sum rate, and the proposed matching based antenna activation algorithm yields a significant performance gain over the considered benchmarks.

Age of Information Analysis for CR-NOMA Aided Uplink Systems with Randomly Arrived Packets

This paper studies the application of cognitive radio inspired non-orthogonal multiple access (CR-NOMA) to reduce age of information (AoI) for uplink transmission. In particular, a time division multiple access (TDMA) based legacy network is considered, where each user is allocated with a dedicated time slot to transmit its status update information. The CR-NOMA is implemented as an add-on to the TDMA legacy network, which enables each user to have more opportunities to transmit by sharing other user's time slots. A rigorous analytical framework is developed to obtain the expressions for AoIs achieved by CR-NOMA with and without re-transmission, by taking the randomness of the status update generating process into consideration. Numerical results are presented to verify the accuracy of the developed analysis. It is shown that the AoI can be significantly reduced by applying CR-NOMA compared to TDMA. Moreover, the use of re-transmission is helpful to reduce AoI, especially when the status arrival rate is low.

Hybrid SIC Aided Hybrid NOMA: A New Approach For Improving Energy Efficiency

Hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which organically combines pure NOMA and conventional OMA, has recently received significant attention to be a promising multiple access framework for future wireless communication networks. However, most of the literatures on hybrid NOMA only consider fixed order of successive interference cancellation (SIC), namely FSIC, for the NOMA transmission phase of hybrid NOMA, resulting in limited performance. Differently, this paper aims to reveal the potential of applying hybrid SIC (HSIC) to improve the energy efficiency of hybrid NOMA. Specifically, a HSIC aided hybrid NOMA scheme is proposed, which can be treated as a simple add-on to the legacy orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based network. The proposed scheme offers some users (termed ``opportunistic users'') to have more chances to transmit by transparently sharing legacy users' time slots. For a fair comparison, a power reducing coefficient $β$ is introduced to ensure that the energy consumption of the proposed scheme is less than conventional OMA. Given $β$, the probability for the event that the achievable rate of the proposed HSIC aided hybrid NOMA scheme cannot outperform its OMA counterpart is obtained in closed-form, by considering impact of user pairing. Furthermore, asymptotic analysis shows that the aforementioned probability can approach zero under some given conditions in the SNR regime, indicating that the energy efficiency of the proposed scheme is almost surely higher than that of OMA for these given conditions. Numerical results are presented to verify the analysis and also demonstrate the benefit of applying HSIC compared to FSIC.

Flexible-Antenna Systems: A Pinching-Antenna Perspective

Flexible-antenna systems have recently received significant research interest due to their capability to reconfigure wireless channels intelligently. This paper focuses on a new type of flexible-antenna technology, termed pinching antennas, which can be realized by applying small dielectric particles on a waveguide. Analytical results are first developed for the simple case with a single pinching antenna and a single waveguide, where the unique feature of the pinching-antenna system to create strong line-of-sight links and mitigate large-scale path loss is demonstrated. An advantageous feature of pinching-antenna systems is that multiple pinching antennas can be activated on a single waveguide at no extra cost; however, they must be fed with the same signal. This feature motivates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and analytical results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of NOMA-assisted pinching-antenna systems. Finally, the case with multiple pinching antennas and multiple waveguides is studied, which resembles a classical multiple-input single-input (MISO) interference channel. By exploiting the capability of pinching antennas to reconfigure the wireless channel, it is revealed that a performance upper bound on the interference channel becomes achievable, where the achievability conditions are also identified. Computer simulation results are presented to verify the developed analytical results and demonstrate the superior performance of pinching-antenna systems.

On Energy Efficiency of Hybrid NOMA

This paper aims to prove the significant superiority of hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) over orthog onal multiple access (OMA) in terms of energy efficiency. In particular, a novel hybrid NOMA scheme is proposed in which a user can transmit signals not only by using its own time slot but also by using the time slots of other users. The data rate maximization problem is studied by optimizing the power allocation, where closed-form solutions are obtained. Further more, the conditions under which hybrid NOMA can achieve a higher instantaneous data rate with less power consumption than OMA are obtained. It is proved that the probability that hybrid NOMA can achieve a higher instantaneous data rate with less power consumption than OMA approaches one in the high SNR regime, indicating the superiority of hybrid NOMA in terms of power efficiency. Numerical results are also provided to verify the developed analysis and also to demonstrate the superior performance of hybrid NOMA.

Exploring the Impact of RIS on Cooperative NOMA URLLC Systems: A Theoretical Perspective

In this paper, we conduct a theoretical analysis of how to integrate reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) with cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), considering URLLC. We consider a downlink two-user cooperative NOMA system employing short-packet communications, where the two users are denoted by the central user (CU) and the cell-edge user (CEU), respectively, and an RIS is deployed to enhance signal quality. Specifically, compared to CEU, CU lies nearer from BS and enjoys the higher channel gains. Closed-form expressions for the CU's average block error rate (BLER) are derived. Furthermore, we evaluate the CEU's BLER performance utilizing selective combining (SC) and derive a tight lower bound under maximum ratio combining (MRC). Simulation results are provided to our analyses and demonstrate that the RIS-assisted system significantly outperforms its counterpart without RIS in terms of BLER. Notably, MRC achieves a squared multiple of the diversity gain of the SC, leading to more reliable performance, especially for the CEU. Furthermore, by dividing the RIS into two zones, each dedicated to a specific user, the average BLER can be further reduced, particularly for the CEU.

A Simple Study on the Optimality of Hybrid NOMA

The key idea of hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is to allow users to use the bandwidth resources to which they cannot have access in orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based legacy networks while still guaranteeing its compatibility with the legacy network. However, in a conventional hybrid NOMA network, some users have access to more bandwidth resources than others, which leads to a potential performance loss. So what if the users can access the same amount of bandwidth resources? This letter focuses on a simple two-user scenario, and develops analytical and simulation results to reveal that for this considered scenario, conventional hybrid NOMA is still an optimal transmission strategy.
