Asymptotic Performance of the GSVD-Based MIMO-NOMA Communications with Rician Fading

In recent years, the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) systems have attracted a significant interest in the relevant research communities. As a potential precoding scheme, the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) can be adopted in MIMO-NOMA systems and has been proved to have high spectral efficiency. In this paper, the performance of the GSVD-based MIMO-NOMA communications with Rician fading is studied. In particular, the distribution characteristics of generalized singular values (GSVs) of channel matrices are analyzed. Two novel mathematical tools, the linearization trick and the deterministic equivalent method, which are based on operator-valued free probability theory, are exploited to derive the Cauchy transform of GSVs. An iterative process is proposed to obtain the numerical values of the Cauchy transform of GSVs, which can be exploited to derive the average data rates of the communication system. In addition, the special case when the channel is modeled as Rayleigh fading, i.e., the line-of-sight propagation is trivial, is analyzed. In this case, the closed-form expressions of average rates are derived from the proposed iterative process. Simulation results are provided to validate the derived analytical results.

NOMA-Based Coexistence of Near-Field and Far-Field Massive MIMO Communications

This letter considers a legacy massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network, in which spatial beams have been preconfigured for near-field users, and proposes to use the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) principle to serve additional far-field users by exploiting the spatial beams preconfigured for the legacy near-field users. Our results reveal that the coexistence between near-field and far-field communications can be effectively supported via NOMA, and that the performance of NOMA-assisted massive MIMO can be efficiently improved by increasing the number of antennas at the base station.

User-Pair Selection for QoS-Aware Secrecy Rate Maximization in Untrusted NOMA

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recognized as one of the key enabling technologies for future generation wireless networks. Sharing the same time-frequency resource among users imposes secrecy challenges in NOMA in the presence of untrusted users. This paper characterizes the impact of user-pair selection on the secrecy performance of an untrusted NOMA system. In this regard, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the secrecy rate of the strong user while satisfying the quality of service (QoS) demands of the user with poorer channel conditions. To solve this problem, we first obtain optimal power allocation in a two-user NOMA system, and then investigate the user-pair selection problem in a more generalized four user NOMA system. Extensive performance evaluations are conducted to validate the accuracy of the proposed results and present valuable insights on the impact of various system parameters on the secrecy performance of the NOMA communication system.

Stochastic Geometry Based Modeling and Analysis on Network NOMA in Downlink CoMP Systems

This paper investigates the performance of network non-orthogonal multiple access (N-NOMA) in a downlink coordinated multi-point (CoMP) system. In the considered N-NOMA scheme, multiple base stations (BSs) cooperatively serve a CoMP user, meanwhile, each BS serves additional NOMA users by occupying the same resource block allocated to the CoMP user. The locations of the BSs and users are modeled by stochastic geometric models and the interference from the whole network is considered. Through rigorous derivations, the outage probabilities achieved by the CoMP and NOMA users are obtained, respectively. Numerical results are provided to verify the accuracy of the analytical results and also demonstrate the superior performance of N-NOMA compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based CoMP scheme.

Communication-Sensing Region for Cell-Free Massive MIMO ISAC Systems

This paper investigates the system model and the transmit beamforming design for the Cell-Free massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. The impact of the uncertainty of the target locations on the propagation of wireless signals is considered during both uplink and downlink phases, and especially, the main statistics of the MIMO channel estimation error are theoretically derived in the closed-form fashion. A fundamental performance metric, termed communication-sensing (C-S) region, is defined for the considered system via three cases, i.e., the sensing-only case, the communication-only case and the ISAC case. The transmit beamforming design problems for the three cases are respectively carried out through different reformulations, e.g., the Lagrangian dual transform and the quadratic fractional transform, and some combinations of the block coordinate descent method and the successive convex approximation method. Numerical results present a 3-dimensional C-S region with a dynamic number of access points to illustrate the trade-off between communication and radar sensing. The advantage for radar sensing of the Cell-Free massive MIMO system is also studied via a comparison with the traditional cellular system. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed beamforming scheme is validated in comparison with zero-forcing and maximum ratio transmission schemes.

Hybrid Successive Interference Cancellation and Power Adaptation: a Win-Win Strategy for Robust Uplink NOMA Transmission

The aim of this paper is to reveal the importance of hybrid successive interference cancellation (SIC) and power adaptation (PA) for improving transmission robustness of uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Particularly, a cognitive radio inspired uplink NOMA communication scenario is considered, where one primary user is allocated one dedicated resource block, while M secondary users compete with each other to be opportunistically served by using the same resource block of the primary user. Two novel schemes are proposed for the considered scenario, namely hybrid SIC with PA (HSIC-PA) scheme and fixed SIC with PA (FSIC-PA) scheme. Both schemes can ensure that the secondary users are served without degrading the transmission reliability of the primary user compared to conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based schemes. Rigorous analytical results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed two schemes. It is shown that both schemes can avoid outage probability error floors without any constraints on users' target rates in the high SNR regime. Furthermore, it is shown that the diversity gain achieved by the HSIC-PA scheme is M, while that of the FISC-PA scheme is only 1. Numerical results are provided to verify the developed analytical results and also demonstrate the superior performance achieved by the proposed schemes by comparing with the existing HSIC without PA (HSIC-NPA) scheme. The presented simulation results also show that HSIC-PA scheme performs the best among the three schemes, which indicates the importance of the combination of HSIC and PA for improving transmission robustness.

A Fine Grained Stochastic Geometry Based Analysis on LEO Satellite Communication Systems

Recently, stochastic geometry has been applied to provide tractable performance analysis for low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. However, existing works mainly focus on analyzing the ``coverage probability'', which provides limited information. To provide more insights, this paper provides a more fine grained analysis on LEO satellite networks modeled by a homogeneous Poisson point process (HPPP). Specifically, the distribution and moments of the conditional coverage probability given the point process are studied. The developed analytical results can provide characterizations on LEO satellite networks, which are not available in existing literature, such as ``user fairness'' and ``what fraction of users can achieve a given transmission reliability ''. Simulation results are provided to verify the developed analysis. Numerical results show that, in a dense satellite network, {\color{black}it is} beneficial to deploy satellites at low altitude, for the sake of both coverage probability and user fairness.

New Designs of Robust Uplink NOMA in Cognitive Radio Inspired Communications

This paper considers a cognitive radio inspired uplink communication scenario, where one primary user is allocated with one dedicated resource block, while $M$ secondary users compete with each other to opportunistically access the primary user's channel. Two new designs of NOMA schemes, namely hybrid successive interference cancellation with power adaptation (HSIC-PA) and fixed successive interference cancellation with power adaptation (FSIC-PA), are proposed. The significant advantages of the proposed schemes are two folds. First, the proposed two schemes can ensure that the secondary users are opportunistically served without degrading the transmission reliability of the primary user. Besides, the transmission robustness of the served secondary users can be guaranteed. Specifically, the outage probability error floors can be avoided for the secondary users, which is proved by asymptotic analysis in the paper. Extensive simulation results are also provided to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed schemes.

NOMA-Assisted Grant-Free Transmission: How to Design Pre-Configured SNR Levels?

An effective way to realize non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted grant-free transmission is to first create multiple receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels and then serve multiple grant-free users by employing these SNR levels as bandwidth resources. These SNR levels need to be pre-configured prior to the grant-free transmission and have great impact on the performance of grant-free networks. The aim of this letter is to illustrate different designs for configuring the SNR levels and investigate their impact on the performance of grant-free transmission, where age-of-information is used as the performance metric. The presented analytical and simulation results demonstrate the performance gain achieved by NOMA over orthogonal multiple access, and also reveal the relative merits of the considered designs for pre-configured SNR levels.

Constructing permutation polynomials using generalized Redei functions

We determine all permutations in two large classes of polynomials over finite fields, where the construction of the polynomials in each class involves the denominators of a class of rational functions generalizing the classical Redei functions. Our results generalize eight recent results from the literature, and our proofs of our more general results are much shorter and simpler than the previous proofs of special cases.

Next-Generation Full Duplex Networking System Empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Full duplex (FD) radio has attracted extensive attention due to its co-time and co-frequency transceiving capability. {However, the potential gain brought by FD radios is closely related to the management of self-interference (SI), which imposes high or even stringent requirements on SI cancellation (SIC) techniques. When the FD deployment evolves into next-generation mobile networking, the SI problem becomes more complicated, significantly limiting its potential gains.} In this paper, we conceive a multi-cell FD networking scheme by deploying a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) at the cell boundary to configure the radio environment proactively. To achieve the full potential of the system, we aim to maximize the sum rate (SR) of multiple cells by jointly optimizing the transmit precoding (TPC) matrices at FD base stations (BSs) and users and the phase shift matrix at RIS. Since the original problem is non-convex, we reformulate and decouple it into a pair of subproblems by utilizing the relationship between the SR and minimum mean square error (MMSE). The optimal solutions of TPC matrices are obtained in closed form, while both complex circle manifold (CCM) and successive convex approximation (SCA) based algorithms are developed to resolve the phase shift matrix suboptimally. Our simulation results show that introducing an RIS into an FD networking system not only improves the overall SR significantly but also enhances the cell edge performance prominently. More importantly, we validate that the RIS deployment with optimized phase shifts can reduce the requirement for SIC and the number of BS antennas, which further reduces the hardware cost and power consumption, especially with a sufficient number of reflecting elements. As a result, the utilization of an RIS enables the originally cumbersome FD networking system to become efficient and practical.

Active RIS-aided EH-NOMA Networks: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

An active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user downlink communication system is investigated, where non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is employed to improve spectral efficiency, and the active RIS is powered by energy harvesting (EH). The problem of joint control of the RIS's amplification matrix and phase shift matrix is formulated to maximize the communication success ratio with considering the quality of service (QoS) requirements of users, dynamic communication state, and dynamic available energy of RIS. To tackle this non-convex problem, a cascaded deep learning algorithm namely long short-term memory-deep deterministic policy gradient (LSTM-DDPG) is designed. First, an advanced LSTM based algorithm is developed to predict users' dynamic communication state. Then, based on the prediction results, a DDPG based algorithm is proposed to joint control the amplification matrix and phase shift matrix of the RIS. Finally, simulation results verify the accuracy of the prediction of the proposed LSTM algorithm, and demonstrate that the LSTM-DDPG algorithm has a significant advantage over other benchmark algorithms in terms of communication success ratio performance.

Joint Robust Beamforming Design for WPT-assisted D2D Communications in MISO-NOMA: Fractional Programming and Deep Reinforcement Learning

This paper proposes a scheme for the envisioned sixth-generation (6G) ultra-massive Machine Type Communications(umMTC). In particular, wireless power transfer (WPT) assisted communication is deployed in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink networks to realize spectrum and energy cooperation. This paper focuses on joint robust beamforming design to maximize the energy efficiency of WPT-assisted D2D communications in multiple-input single-output (MISO)-NOMA downlink networks. To efficiently address the formulated non-concave energy efficiency maximization problem, a pure fractional programming (PFP) algorithm is proposed, where the time switching coefficient of the WPT device and the beamforming vectors of the base station are alternatively optimized by applying the Dinkelbach method and quadratic transform respectively. To prove the optimality of the proposed algorithm, the partial exhaustive search algorithm is proposed as a benchmark. A deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based method is also applied to directly solve the non-concave problem. The proposed PFP algorithm and the DDPG-based algorithm are compared in the presence of different channel estimation errors. Simulation results show that the proposed PFP algorithm outperforms the DDPG-based algorithm if perfect channel state information (CSI) can be obtained or just have minor errors, while the DDPG-based algorithm is more robust when the channel estimation accuracy is unsatisfactory. On the other hand, one can conclude that the NOMA scheme can provide a higher gain than OMA on the energy efficiency of the WPT-assisted D2D communication in legacy multi-user downlink networks.

The developed CRNOMA scheme is compatible to various communication networks, because it can be implemented as a simple add-on. An example of using CR-NOMA as an add-on in time-division multiple access networks for age of information (AoI) reduction is illustrated, where analytical results are developed to demonstrate

An Interdisciplinary Approach to Optimal Communication and Flight Operation of High-Altitude Long-Endurance Platforms

Aerial communication platforms, stratospheric high-altitude platform stations (HAPS), have the potential to provide/catalyze advanced mobile wireless communication services with its ubiquitous connectivity and ultra-wide coverage radius. Recently, HAPS has gained immense popularity - achieved primarily through self-sufficient energy systems - to render long-endurance characteristics. The photo-voltaic cells mounted on the aircraft harvest solar energy during the day, which can be partially used for communication and station-keeping, whereas, the excess is stored in the rechargeable batteries for the night time sustenance. We carry out an adroit power budgeting to ascertain if the available solar power can simultaneously and efficiently self-sustain the requisite propulsion and communication power expense. We further propose an energy optimum trajectory for station-keeping flight and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for multi-cell users, which are served by the directional beams from HAPS communication systems. We design optimal power allocation for downlink (DL) NOMA users along with the ideal position and speed of flight with the aim to maximize sum data rate during the day and minimize power expenditure during the night, while ensuring quality of service. Our findings reveal the significance of joint design of communication and aerodynamics parameters for optimum energy utilization and resource allocation.

Roots of certain polynomials over finite fields

We determine the roots in F_{q^3} of the polynomial X^{2q^k+1} + X + c for each positive integer k and each c in F_q, where q is a power of 2. We introduce a new approach for this type of question, and we obtain results which are more explicit than the previous results in this area. Our results resolve an open problem and a conjecture of Zheng, Kan, Zhang, Peng, and Li.

Low-degree permutation rational functions over finite fields

We determine all degree-4 rational functions f(X) in F_q(X) which permute P^1(F_q), and answer two questions of Ferraguti and Micheli about the number of such functions and the number of equivalence classes of such functions up to composing with degree-one rational functions. We also determine all degree-8 rational functions f(X) in F_q(X) which permute P^1(F_q) in case q is sufficiently large, and do the same for degree 32 in case either q is odd or f(X) is a nonsquare. Further, for most other positive integers n<4096, for each sufficiently large q we determine all degree-n rational functions f(X) in F_q(X) which permute P^1(F_q) but which are not compositions of lower-degree rational functions in F_q(X). Some of these results are proved by using a new Galois-theoretic characterization of additive (linearized) polynomials among all rational functions, which is of independent interest.

Energy Consumption Minimization in Secure Multi-antenna UAV-assisted MEC Networks with Channel Uncertainty

This paper investigates the robust and secure task transmission and computation scheme in multi-antenna unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) networks, where the UAV is dual-function, i.e., aerial MEC and aerial relay. The channel uncertainty is considered during information offloading and downloading. An energy consumption minimization problem is formulated under some constraints including users' quality of service and information security requirements and the UAV's trajectory's causality, by jointly optimizing the CPU frequency, the offloading time, the beamforming vectors, the artificial noise and the trajectory of the UAV, as well as the CPU frequency, the offloading time and the transmission power of each user. To solve the non-convex problem, a reformulated problem is first derived by a series of convex reformation methods, i.e., semi-definite relaxation, S-Procedure and first-order approximation, and then, solved by a proposed successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm. The convergence performance and computational complexity of the proposed algorithm are analyzed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperform existing benchmark schemes. Besides, the proposed SCA-based algorithm is superior to traditional alternative optimization-based algorithm.
