User Clustering for Coexistence between Near-field and Far-field Communications

This letter investigates the coexistence between near-field (NF) and far-field (FF) communications, where multiple FF users are clustered to be served on the beams of legacy NF users, via non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Three different successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding strategies are proposed and a sum rate maximization problem is formulated to optimize the beam assignment and decoding order. The beam assignment problem is further reformulated as an overlapping coalitional game, which facilitates the design of the proposed clustering algorithm. The optimal decoding order in each cluster is also derived, which can be integrated into the proposed clustering. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed clustering algorithm is able to significantly improve the sum rate of the considered system, and the developed strategies achieve different trade-offs between sum rate and fairness.

Hybrid NOMA Assisted OFDMA Uplink Transmission

Hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has recently received significant research interest due to its ability to efficiently use resources from different domains and also its compatibility with various orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based legacy networks. Unlike existing studies on hybrid NOMA that focus on combining NOMA with time-division multiple access (TDMA), this work considers hybrid NOMA assisted orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA). In particular, the impact of a unique feature of hybrid NOMA assisted OFDMA, i.e., the availability of users' dynamic channel state information, on the system performance is analyzed from the following two perspectives. From the optimization perspective, analytical results are developed which show that with hybrid NOMA assisted OFDMA, the pure OMA mode is rarely adopted by the users, and the pure NOMA mode could be optimal for minimizing the users' energy consumption, which differs from the hybrid TDMA case. From the statistical perspective, two new performance metrics, namely the power outage probability and the power diversity gain, are developed to quantitatively measure the performance gain of hybrid NOMA over OMA. The developed analytical results also demonstrate the ability of hybrid NOMA to meet the users' diverse energy profiles.

Exploring Age-of-Information Weighting in Federated Learning under Data Heterogeneity

This paper investigates federated learning in a wireless communication system, where random device selection is employed with non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data. The analysis indicates that while training deep learning networks using federated stochastic gradient descent (FedSGD) on non-IID datasets, device selection can generate gradient errors that accumulate, leading to potential weight divergence. To mitigate training divergence, we design an age-weighted FedSGD to scale local gradients according to the previous state of devices. To further improve learning performance by increasing device participation under the maximum time consumption constraint, we formulate an energy consumption minimization problem by including resource allocation and sub-channel assignment. By transforming the resource allocation problem into convex and utilizing KKT conditions, we derived the optimal resource allocation solution. Moreover, this paper develops a matching based algorithm to generate the enhanced sub-channel assignment. Simulation results indicate that i) age-weighted FedSGD is able to outperform conventional FedSGD in terms of convergence rate and achievable accuracy, and ii) the proposed resource allocation and sub-channel assignment strategies can significantly reduce energy consumption and improve learning performance by increasing the number of selected devices.

On the Reliability and Security of Ambient Backscatter Uplink NOMA Networks

A fundamental objective of the forthcoming sixth-generation wireless networks is to concurrently serve a vast array of devices many of which, such as Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors, are projected to have low power requirements or even operate in a battery-free manner. To achieve this goal, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and ambient backscatter communications (AmBC) are regarded as two pivotal and promising technologies. In this work, we present a novel analytical framework for studying the reliability and security of uplink NOMA-based AmBC systems. Specifically, closed-form analytical expressions for both NOMA-users' and IoT backscatter device's (BD's) outage probabilities (OPs) are derived for both cases of perfect and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). In addition, assuming that one NOMA-user transmits an artificial noise in order to enhance system's security, the physical layer security (PLS) of the system is investigated by extracting analytical expressions for NOMA-users' and BD's intercept probabilities (IPs). To gain insightful understandings, an asymptotic analysis is carried out by focusing on the high signal-to-noise (SNR) regime, which reveals that NOMA-users and BDs face outage floors in the high SNR regime as well as that IPs reach constant values at high SNR. Additionally, practical insights regarding how different system parameters affect these OP floors and IP constant values are extracted. Numerical results verify the accuracy of othe developed theoretical framework, offer performance comparisons between the presented NOMA-based AmBC system and a conventional orthogonal multiple access-based AmBC system, and reveal the impact of different system parameters on the reliability and security of NOMA-based AmBC networks.

Next Generation Multiple Access for IMT Towards 2030 and Beyond

Multiple access techniques are fundamental to the design of wireless communication systems, since many crucial components of such systems depend on the choice of the multiple access technique. Because of the importance of multiple access, there has been an ongoing quest during the past decade to develop next generation multiple access (NGMA). Among those potential candidates for NGMA, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has received significant attention from both the industrial and academic research communities, and has been highlighted in the recently published International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-2030 Framework. However, there is still no consensus in the research community about how exactly NOMA assisted NGMA should be designed. This perspective is to outline three important features of NOMA assisted NGMA, namely multi-domain utilization, multi-mode compatibility, and multi-dimensional optimality, where important directions for future research into the design of NOMA assisted NGMA are also discussed.

BackCom Assisted Hybrid NOMA Uplink Transmission for Ambient IoT

Hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (H-NOMA) has recently received significant attention as a general framework of multiple access, where both conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and pure NOMA are its special cases. This paper focuses on the application of H-NOMA to ambient Internet of Things (IoT) with energy-constrained devices, where a new backscatter communication (BackCom) assisted H-NOMA uplink scheme is developed. Resource allocation for H-NOMA uplink transmission is also considered, where an overall power minimization problem is formulated. Insightful understandings for the key features of BackCom assisted H-NOMA and its difference from conventional H-NOMA are illustrated by developing analytical results for the two-user special case. For the general multi-user scenario, two algorithms, one based on the branch-bound (BB) principle and the other based on successive convex approximation (SCA), are developed to realize different tradeoffs between the system performance and complexity. The numerical results are also provided to verify the accuracy of the developed analytical results and demonstrate the performance gain of H-NOMA over OMA.

Secrecy Outage Probability Analysis for Downlink RIS-NOMA Networks with On-Off Control

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been regarded as a promising technology since it has ability to create the favorable channel conditions. This paper investigates the secure communications of RIS assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, where both external and internal eavesdropping scenarios are taken into consideration. More specifically, novel approximate and asymptotic expressions of secrecy outage probability (SOP) for the k-th legitimate user (LU) are derived by invoking imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and perfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC). To characterize the secrecy performance of RIS-NOMA networks, the diversity order of the k-th LU with ipSIC/pSIC is obtained in the high signal-to-noise ratio region. The secrecy system throughput of RIS-NOMA networks is discussed in delay-limited transmission mode. Numerical results are presented to verify theoretical analysis that: i) The SOP of RIS-NOMA networks is superior to that of RIS assisted orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and conventional cooperative communication schemes; ii) As the number of reflecting elements increases, the RIS-NOMA networks are capable of achieving the enhanced secrecy performance; and iii) The RIS-NOMA networks have better secrecy system throughput than that of RIS-OMA networks and conventional cooperative communication schemes.

Secure Communication of Active RIS Assisted NOMA Networks

As a revolutionary technology, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been deemed as an indispensable part of the 6th generation communications due to its inherent ability to regulate the wireless channels. However, passive RIS (PRIS) still suffers from some pressing issues, one of which is that the fading of the entire reflection link is proportional to the product of the distances from the base station to the PRIS and from the PRIS to the users, i.e., the productive attenuation. To tackle this problem, active RIS (ARIS) has been proposed to reconfigure the wireless propagation condition and alleviate the productive attenuation. In this paper, we investigate the physical layer security of the ARIS assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks with the attendance of external and internal eavesdroppers. To be specific, the closed-form expressions of secrecy outage probability (SOP) and secrecy system throughput are derived by invoking both imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and perfect SIC. The secrecy diversity orders of legitimate users are obtained at high signal-to-noise ratios. Numerical results are presented to verify the accuracy of the theoretical expressions and indicate that: i) The SOP of ARIS assisted NOMA networks exceeds that of PRIS-NOMA, ARIS/PRIS-assisted orthogonal multiple access (OMA); ii) Due to the balance between the thermal noise and residual interference, introducing excess reconfigurable elements at ARIS is not helpful to reduce the SOP; and iii) The secrecy throughput performance of ARIS-NOMA networks outperforms that of PRIS-NOMA and ARIS/PRIS-OMA networks.

Rethinking Clustered Federated Learning in NOMA Enhanced Wireless Networks

This study explores the benefits of integrating the novel clustered federated learning (CFL) approach with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) under non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) datasets, where multiple devices participate in the aggregation with time limitations and a finite number of sub-channels. A detailed theoretical analysis of the generalization gap that measures the degree of non-IID in the data distribution is presented. Following that, solutions to address the challenges posed by non-IID conditions are proposed with the analysis of the properties. Specifically, users' data distributions are parameterized as concentration parameters and grouped using spectral clustering, with Dirichlet distribution serving as the prior. The investigation into the generalization gap and convergence rate guides the design of sub-channel assignments through the matching-based algorithm, and the power allocation is achieved by Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions with the derived closed-form solution. The extensive simulation results show that the proposed cluster-based FL framework can outperform FL baselines in terms of both test accuracy and convergence rate. Moreover, jointly optimizing sub-channel and power allocation in NOMA-enhanced networks can lead to a significant improvement.

Design of Downlink Hybrid NOMA Transmission

The aim of this paper is to develop hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted downlink transmission. First, for the single-input single-output (SISO) scenario, i.e., each node is equipped with a single antenna, a novel hybrid NOMA scheme is introduced, where NOMA is implemented as an add-on of a legacy time division multiple access (TDMA) network. Because of the simplicity of the SISO scenario, analytical results can be developed to reveal important properties of downlink hybrid NOMA. For example, in the case that the users' channel gains are ordered and the durations of their time slots are the same, downlink hybrid NOMA is shown to always outperform TDMA, which is different from the existing conclusion for uplink hybrid NOMA. Second, the proposed downlink SISO hybrid NOMA scheme is extended to the multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, i.e., the base station has multiple antennas. For the MISO scenario, near-field communication is considered to illustrate how NOMA can be used as an add-on in legacy networks based on space division multiple access and TDMA. Simulation results verify the developed analytical results and demonstrate the superior performance of downlink hybrid NOMA compared to conventional orthogonal multiple access.

Active Simultaneously Transmitting and Reflecting Surface Assisted NOMA Networks

The novel active simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (ASTARS) has recently received a lot of attention due to its capability to conquer the multiplicative fading loss and achieve full-space smart radio environments. This paper introduces the ASTARS to assist non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communications, where the stochastic geometry theory is used to model the spatial positions of pairing users. We design the independent reflection/transmission phase-shift controllers of ASTARS to align the phases of cascaded channels at pairing users. We derive new closed-form and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability and ergodic data rate for ASTARS-NOMA networks in the presence of perfect/imperfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC). The diversity orders and multiplexing gains for ASTARS-NOMA are derived to provide more insights. Furthermore, the system throughputs of ASTARS-NOMA are investigated in both delay-tolerant and delay-limited transmission modes. The numerical results are presented and show that: 1) ASTARS-NOMA with pSIC outperforms ASTARS assisted-orthogonal multiple access (ASTARS-OMA) in terms of outage probability and ergodic data rate; 2) The outage probability of ASTARS-NOMA can be further reduced within a certain range by increasing the power amplification factors; 3) The system throughputs of ASTARS-NOMA are superior to that of ASTARS-OMA in both delay-limited and delay-tolerant transmission modes.

A General Analytical Framework for the Resolution of Near-Field Beamforming

The resolution is an important performance metric of near-field communication networks. In particular, the resolution of near field beamforming measures how effectively users can be distinguished in the distance-angle domain, which is one of the most significant features of near-field communications. In a comparison, conventional far-field beamforming can distinguish users in the angle domain only, which means that near-field communication yields the full utilization of user spatial resources to improve spectrum efficiency. In the literature of near-field communications, there have been a few studies on whether the resolution of near-field beamforming is perfect. However, each of the existing results suffers its own limitations, e.g., each is accurate for special cases only, and cannot precisely and comprehensively characterize the resolution. In this letter, a general analytical framework is developed to evaluate the resolution of near-field beamforming. Based on this derived expression, the impacts of parameters on the resolution are investigated, which can shed light on the design of the near-field communications, including the designs of beamforming and multiple access tequniques.

GNN-Based Beamforming for Sum-Rate Maximization in MU-MISO Networks

The advantages of graph neural networks (GNNs) in leveraging the graph topology of wireless networks have drawn increasing attentions. This paper studies the GNN-based learning approach for the sum-rate maximization in multiple-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) networks subject to the users' individual data rate requirements and the power budget of the base station. By modeling the MU-MISO network as a graph, a GNN-based architecture named CRGAT is proposed to directly map the channel state information to the beamforming vectors. The attention-enabled aggregation and the residual-assisted combination are adopted to enhance the learning capability and avoid the oversmoothing issue. Furthermore, a novel activation function is proposed for the constraint due to the limited power budget at the base station. The CRGAT is trained in an unsupervised learning manner with two proposed loss functions. An evaluation method is proposed for the learning-based approach, based on which the effectiveness of the proposed CRGAT is validated in comparison with several convex optimization and learning based approaches. Numerical results are provided to reveal the advantages of the CRGAT including the millisecond-level response with limited optimality performance loss, the scalability to different number of users and power budgets, and the adaptability to different system settings.

Utilizing Imperfect Resolution of Near-Field Beamforming: A Hybrid-NOMA Perspective

This letter studies how the imperfect resolution of near-field beamforming, the key feature of near-field communications, can be used to improve the throughput and connectivity of wireless networks. In particular, a hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission strategy is developed to use preconfigured near-field beams for serving additional users. An energy consumption minimization problem is first formulated and then solved by using different successive interference cancellation strategies. Both analytical and simulation results are presented to illustrate the impact of the resolution of near-field beamforming on the design of hybrid NOMA transmission.

Client Orchestration and Cost-Efficient Joint Optimization for NOMA-Enabled Hierarchical Federated Learning

Hierarchical federated learning (HFL) shows great advantages over conventional two-layer federated learning (FL) in reducing network overhead and interaction latency while still retaining the data privacy of distributed FL clients. However, the communication and energy overhead still pose a bottleneck for HFL performance, especially as the number of clients raises dramatically. To tackle this issue, we propose a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enabled HFL system under semi-synchronous cloud model aggregation in this paper, aiming to minimize the total cost of time and energy at each HFL global round. Specifically, we first propose a novel fuzzy logic based client orchestration policy considering client heterogenerity in multiple aspects, including channel quality, data quantity and model staleness. Subsequently, given the fuzzy based client-edge association, a joint edge server scheduling and resource allocation problem is formulated. Utilizing problem decomposition, we firstly derive the closed-form solution for the edge server scheduling subproblem via the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) method. Next, a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based algorithm is proposed to tackle the resource allocation subproblem considering time-varying environments. Finally, extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the considered benchmarks regarding HFL performance improvement and total cost reduction.

Resolution of Near-Field Beamforming and Its Impact on NOMA

The resolution of near-field beamforming is an important metric to measure how effectively users with different locations can be located. This letter identifies the condition under which the resolution of near-field beamforming is not perfect. This imperfect resolution means that one user's near-field beam can be still useful to other users, which motivates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Both the analytical and simulation results are developed to demonstrate that those near-field beams preconfigured for legacy users can indeed be used to effectively serve additional NOMA users, which improves the overall connectivity and system throughput.

On sums of powers of consecutive squares over finite fields, and sums of distinct values of polynomials

For each odd prime power q, and each integer k, we determine the sum of the k-th powers of all elements x in F_q for which both x and x+1 are squares in F_q^*. We also solve the analogous problem when one or both of x and x+1 is a nonsquare. We use these results to determine the sum of the elements of the image set f(F_q) for each f(X) in F_q[X] of the form X^4+aX^2+b, which resolves two conjectures by Finch-Smith, Harrington, and Wong.

Determination of hyperovals by lines through a few points

If S is a set of q+2 points in P^2(F_q) such that some point of S is not on any line containing two other points of S, then in suitable coordinates S has the form S_f:={(c:f(c):1) : c in F_q} U {(1:0:0),(0:1:0)} for some f(X) in F_q[X]. Let T be a subset of S_f which contains the two infinite points and at least 3+log_3(q)/4 finite points. We show that if there is no line passing through a point of T and two other points of S_f, and deg(f)<=q^{1/4}, then no three points of S_f are collinear, so that S_f is a hyperoval. We also determine all f(X) with deg(f)<=q^{1/4} for which S_f is a hyperoval, which strengthens a result that was proved by Caullery and Schmidt using entirely different methods.
