Schatten classes and commutators of Riesz transform on Heisenberg group and applications

We study commutators with the Riesz transforms on the Heisenberg group. The Schatten norm of these commutators is characterized in terms of Besov norms of the symbol. This generalizes the classical Euclidean results of Peller, Janson--Wolff and Rochberg--Semmes. The method of proof extends the earlier methods, allowing us to address not just the Riesz transforms, but also the Cauchy--Szego projection and second order Riesz transforms on the Heisenberg group, among other settings.

Honeycomb-lattice Gamma model in a magnetic field: hidden Néel order and spin-flop transition

We show that a magnetic field in the high-symmetry direction lifts the macroscopic classical ground-state degeneracy of the honeycomb $Γ$ model and induces a long-range magnetic order. While a simple spin-polarized state is stabilized for the ferromagnetic $Γ$-exchange, a periodic $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$ magnetic order is selected by magnetic field for the antiferromagnetic interaction. We show that the complex spin structure of the tripled unit cell can be described by the magnetization vector and a Néel order parameter, similar to those for the spin-flop state of a bipartite antiferromagnet. Indeed, the transition from the low-field plaquette-ordered spin liquid to the field-induced magnetic order can be viewed as a generalized spin-flop transition. An accidental O(2) degeneracy associated with rotation symmetry of the Néel vector is broken by either quantum or thermal fluctuations, leaving a six-fold degenerate ground state. At high fields, the breaking of the ground-state $Z_6$ symmetry is through two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions that enclose a critical XY phase.

Anomalous and Anisotropic Nonlinear Susceptibility in the Proximate Kitaev Magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

The leading order nonlinear (NL) susceptibility, $χ_3$, in a paramagnet is negative and diverges as $T \rightarrow 0$. This divergence is destroyed when spins correlate and the NL response provides unique insights into magnetic order. Dimensionality, exchange interaction, and preponderance of quantum effects all imprint their signatures in the NL magnetic response. Here, we study the NL susceptibilities in the proximate Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ which differs from the expected antiferromagnetic behavior. For $T< T_c$ = 7.5 K and field $B$ in the ab-plane, we obtain contrasting NL responses in low ($<$ 2 ${T}$) and high field regions. For low fields the NL behavior is dominated by a quadratic response (positive $χ_2$), which shows a rapid rise below $T_c$. This large $χ_2 >0$ implies a broken sublattice symmetry of magnetic order at low temperatures. Classical Monte Carlo (CMC) simulations in the standard ${K-H-Γ}$ model secure such a quadratic ${B}$ dependence of ${M}$, only for ${T}$ $\approx$ ${T}_c$ with $χ_2$ being zero as ${T}$ $\rightarrow$ 0. It is also zero for all temperatures in exact diagonalization calculations. On the other hand, we find an exclusive cubic term ($χ_3$) describes the high field NL behavior well. $χ_3$ is large and positive both below and above ${T}_c$ crossing zero only for ${T}$ $>$ 50 K. In contrast, for $B$~$\parallel$~c-axis, no separate low/high field behaviors is measured and only a much smaller $χ_3$ is apparent.

Distribution of Kinks in an Ising Ferromagnet After Annealing and the Generalized Kibble-Zurek Mechanism

We consider the annealing dynamics of a one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet induced by a temperature quench in finite time. In the limit of slow cooling, the asymptotic two-point correlator is analytically found under Glauber dynamics, and the distribution of the number of kinks in the final state is shown to be consistent with a Poissonian distribution. The mean kink number, the variance, and the third centered moment take the same value and obey a universal power-law scaling with the quench time in which the temperature is varied. The universal power-law scaling of cumulants is corroborated by numerical simulations based on Glauber dynamics for moderate cooling times away from the asymptotic limit, when the kink-number distribution takes a binomial form. We analyze the relation of these results to physics beyond the Kibble-Zurek mechanism for critical dynamics, using the kink number distribution to assess adiabaticity and its breakdown. We consider linear, nonlinear, and exponential cooling schedules, among which the latter provides the most efficient shortcuts to cooling in a given quench time. The non-thermal behavior of the final state is established by considering the trace norm distance to a canonical Gibbs state.

Enhanced Superconductivity in Quasi-periodic Crystals

We study superconductivity in a family of one dimensional incommensurate system with $s$-wave pairing interaction. The incommensurate potential can alter the spatial characteristics of electrons in the normal state, leading to either extended, critical, or localized wave functions. We find that superconductivity is significantly enhanced when the electronic wave function exhibits a critical multifractal structure. This criticality also manifests itself in the power-law dependence of superconducting temperature on the pairing strength. As a consequence, an extended superconducting domain is expected to exist around the localization-delocalization transition, which can be induced by either tuning the amplitude of the incommensurate potential, or by varying the chemical potential across a mobility edge. Our results thus suggest a novel approach to enhance superconducting transition temperature through engineering of incommensurate potential.

Quantitative weighted estimates for rough singular integrals on homogeneous groups

In this paper, we study weighted $L^{p}(w)$ boundedness ($1<p<\infty$ and $w$ a Muckenhoupt $A_{p}$ weight) of singular integrals with homogeneous convolution kernel $K(x)$ on an arbitrary homogeneous group $\mathbb H$ of dimension $\mathbb{Q}$, {under the assumption that $K_0$, the restriction of $K$ to the unit annulus, is mean zero and $L^{q}$ integrable for some $q_{0}<q\leq \infty$,} where $q_{0}$ is a fixed constant depending on $w$. We obtain a quantitative weighted bound, which is consistent with the one obtained by Hytönen--Roncal--Tapiola in the Euclidean setting, for this operator on $L^{p}(w)$. Comparing to the previous results in the Euclidean setting, our assumptions on the kernel and on the underlying space are weaker. Moreover, we investigate the quantitative weighted bound for the bi-parameter rough singular integrals on product homogeneous Lie groups.

Weak type $(p,p)$ bounds for Schrödinger groups via generalized Gaussian estimates

Let $L$ be a non-negative self-adjoint operator acting on $L^2(X)$, where $X$ is a space of homogeneous type with a dimension $n$. Suppose that the heat operator $e^{-tL}$ satisfies the generalized Gaussian $(p_0, p'_0)$-estimates of order $m$ for some $1\leq p_0 < 2$. It is known that the operator $(I+L)^{-s } e^{itL}$ is bounded on $L^p(X)$ for $s\geq n|{1/ 2}-{1/p}| $ and $ p\in (p_0, p_0')$ (see for example, \cite{Blunck2, BDN, CCO, CDLY, DN, Mi1}). In this paper we study the endpoint case $p=p_0$ and show that for $s_0= n\big|{1\over 2}-{1\over p_0}\big|$, the operator $(I+L)^{-{s_0}}e^{itL} $ is of weak type $(p_{0},p_{0})$, that is, there is a constant $C>0$, independent of $t$ and $f$ so that \begin{eqnarray*} μ\left(\left\{x: \big|(I+L)^{-s_0}e^{itL} f(x)\big|>α\right\} \right)\leq C (1+|t|)^{n(1 - {p_0\over 2}) } \left( {\|f\|_{p_0} \over α} \right)^{p_0} , \ \ \ t\in{\mathbb R} \end{eqnarray*} for $α>0$ when $μ(X)=\infty$, and $α>\big(\|f\|_{p_{0}}/μ(X) \big)^{p_{0}}$ when $μ(X)<\infty$. Our results can be applied to Schrödinger operators with rough potentials and %second order elliptic operators with rough lower order terms, or higher order elliptic operators with bounded measurable coefficients although in general, their semigroups fail to satisfy Gaussian upper bounds.

Plaquette order in classical spin liquid stabilized by strong off-diagonal exchange

We report a new classical spin liquid in which the collective flux degrees of freedom break the translation symmetry of the honeycomb lattice. This exotic phase exists in frustrated spin-orbit magnets where a dominant off-diagonal exchange, the so-called $Γ$ term, results in a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy at the classical level. We demonstrate that the system undergoes a phase transition driven by thermal order-by-disorder at a critical temperature $T_c \approx 0.04 |Γ|$. At first sight, this transition reduces an emergent spherical spin-symmetry to a cubic one: spins point predominantly toward the cubic axes at $T < T_c$. However, this seems to simply restore the cubic symmetry of the $Γ$ model, and the non-coplanar spins remain disordered below $T_c$. We show that the phase transition actually corresponds to plaquette ordering of hexagonal fluxes and the cubic symmetry is indeed broken, a scenario that is further confirmed by our extensive Monte Carlo simulations.
