Sapphire Photonic Crystal Fiber Sensor

Sapphire optical fiber shows great promise for remote sensing in extreme environments approaching 2000 degC, by using laser-processing to form a single-mode waveguide within it. However, for practical application, longer devices with high manufacturability and reliability are required. We report the design, modeling, fabrication, and optimization of an index-guiding sapphire photonic crystal fiber Bragg grating temperature sensor. The device is fabricated using femtosecond laser direct writing to inscribe both the photonic crystal waveguide and the Bragg grating. A spatial light modulator was used to compensate for the mismatch between the immersion objective and the high-index oil used. This improved the aspect ratio and suppressed cracking during fabrication, for higher reliability. The design results in a 6-fold reduction in fabrication time over an equivalent depressed cladding waveguide, significantly reducing the cost of manufacture. Devices up to 7 cm long were fabricated and spliced to standard single-mode fiber. The propagation loss was estimated to be 0.7 dB/cm and the Bragg gratings had a bandwidth of approximately 0.12 nm. Devices were tested in a furnace showing a temperature sensitivity of between 19.0-32.3 pm/degC over a range 25-1200 degC. These longer devices have the potential to enable practical high precision extreme temperature monitoring in many applications, with lower manufacturing cost and higher reliability.

Two-Step Tapering-Collapse Method Enables Element-Interdiffused Cladding for Enhanced Laser Amplification in Yb:YAG Single Crystal Fibers

The development of high-power single crystal fiber (SCF) lasers is critically hindered by the lack of a reliable cladding scheme to confine the optical mode and ensure beam quality. Here, we propose and demonstrate a two-step tapering-collapse method for the first time to fabricate a high-quality cladding on Yb:YAG SCFs based on elemental interdiffusion. This in-situ formed crystalline transition layer with a graded refractive index effectively suppresses lattice mismatch and abruptly mitigates core-cladding interfacial stress. Consequently, the numerical aperture of the SCF is significantly reduced from 0.280 to 0.199. In a master oscillator power amplifier configuration, the clad SCF delivers a remarkable 46.7% enhancement in slope efficiency compared to its bare counterpart, accompanied by a substantially improved near-field beam profile. This work establishes a facile and effective route to high-performance clad SCFs, unlocking their full potential for next-generation extreme-condition lasers.

Edge-Dependent Step-Flow Growth Mechanism in $β$-Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ (100) Facet at the Atomic Level

Homoepitaxial step-flow growth of high-quality $β$-Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ thin films is essential for the advancement of high-performance Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$-based devices. In this work, the step-flow growth mechanism of $β$-Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ (100) facet is explored by machine-learning molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. Our results reveal that Ga adatoms and Ga-O adatom pairs, with their high mobility, are the primary atomic species responsible for efficient surface migration on the (100) facet. The asymmetric monoclinic structure of $β$-Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ induces a distinct two-stage Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier for Ga adatoms at the [00$\overline{1}$] step edge, contributing to the suppression of double-step and hillock formation. Furthermore, a miscut towards [00$\overline{1}$] does not induce the nucleation of stable twin boundaries, whereas a miscut towards [001] leads to the spontaneous formation of twin boundaries. This research provides meaningful insights not only for high-quality $β$-Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ homoepitaxy but also the step-flow growth mechanism of other similar systems.

Polytypism of Incommensurately Modulated Structures of Crystalline Bromine upon Molecular Dissociation under High Pressure

Polytypism of incommensurately modulated structures was hitherto unobserved. Here, we found the phenomenon in simple halogen systems of bromine and iodine upon molecular dissociation in the solids under pressure. Single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction in laser heated diamond anvil cells pressurised up to 112 GPa revealed a number of allotropes of bromine and iodine including polytypes of Br-IIIγ (Fmmm(00γ)s00) with γ varying within 0.18 to 0.3.

High-precision optical fiber sensing beyond 1000°C

Sapphire fiber can withstand around 2000°C, but it is multimoded, giving poor precision sensors. We demonstrate a single-mode sapphire fiber Bragg grating temperature sensor operating up to 1200°C. The repeatability above 1000°C is within {\pm}0.08%.

Young's Modulus and Corresponding Orientation in β-Ga2O3 Thin Films Resolved by Nanomechanical Resonators

We report on the non-destructive measurement of Young's modulus of thin-film single crystal beta gallium oxide (beta-Ga2O3) out of its nanoscale mechanical structures by measuring their fundamental mode resonance frequencies. From the measurements, we extract Young's modulus in (100) plane, EY,(100) = 261.4+/-20.6 GPa, for beta-Ga2O3 nanoflakes synthesized by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), and Young's modulus in [010] direction, EY,[010] = 245.8+/-9.2 GPa, for beta-Ga2O3 nanobelts mechanically cleaved from bulk beta-Ga2O3 crystal grown by edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) method. The Young's moduli extracted directly on nanomechanical resonant device platforms are comparable to theoretical values from first-principle calculations and experimentally extracted values from bulk crystal. This study yields important quantitative nanomechanical properties of beta-Ga2O3 crystals, and helps pave the way for further engineering of beta-Ga2O3 micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS) and transducers.
