Graph Computing based Distributed Fast Decoupled Power Flow Analysis

Power flow analysis plays a fundamental and critical role in the energy management system (EMS). It is required to well accommodate large and complex power system. To achieve a high performance and accurate power flow analysis, a graph computing based distributed power flow analysis approach is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a power system network is divided into multiple areas. Slack buses are selected for each area and, at each SCADA sampling period, the inter-area transmission line power flows are equivalently allocated as extra load injections to corresponding buses. Then, the system network is converted into multiple independent areas. In this way, the power flow analysis could be conducted in parallel for each area and the solved system states could be guaranteed without compromise of accuracy. Besides, for each area, graph computing based fast decoupled power flow (FDPF) is employed to quickly analyze system states. IEEE 118-bus system and MP 10790-bus system are employed to verify the results accuracy and present the promising computation performance of the proposed approach.

Simplify Power Flow Calculation Using Terminal Circuit and PMU Measurements

Power flow calculation methods have been developed in decades using power injections and Newton-Raphson method. The nonlinear characteristics of the power flow to the bus voltage require Jacobian matrix reformation and refactorization in each iteration. Power network is composed by resistors, reactors, and capacitors which is a linear circuit when investigating the node voltages with the node current injections. To take the advantage of the linearity, this paper proposed to use terminal circuit model and PMU voltage phase angle measurements to simplify power flow calculation. When updating current injections at the righthand side of power flow equations and using PMU voltage phase angle measurements representing PV buses voltage phase angle, the Jacobian matrix is constant during the iteration. The simplification reduces the computational efforts and improves the computation efficiency. The proposed method is tested on the IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus standard systems. The results are validated by traditional power flow solution and the computation efficiency is demonstrated.

Large positive magneto-conductivity at microwave frequencies in the compensated topological insulator BiSbTeSe2

The bulk electronic properties of compensated topological insulators are strongly affected by the self-organized formation of charge puddles at low temperature, but their response in the microwave frequency range is little studied. We employed broadband impedance spectroscopy up to 5 GHz to address the ac transport properties of well-compensated BiSbTeSe2, where charge puddles are known to form as metallic entities embedded in an insulating host. It turns out that the average puddle size sets the characteristic frequency cut-off in the GHz range, across which the insulating dc behavior is separated from a metal-like high-frequency response of delocalized carriers within the puddles. The cut-off frequency is found to be controlled by a magnetic field, giving rise to a large positive magneto-conductivity observable only in the GHz range. This curious phenomenon is driven by the Zeeman energy which affects the local band filling in the disordered potential landscape to enhance the puddle size.

Linear invariants of complex manifolds and their plurisubharmonic variations

For a bounded domain $D$ and a real number $p>0$, we denote by $A^p(D)$ the space of $L^p$ integrable holomorphic functions on $D$, equipped with the $L^p$- pseudonorm. We prove that two bounded hyperconvex domains $D_1\subset \mc^n$ and $D_2\subset \mc^m$ are biholomorphic (in particular $n=m$) if there is a linear isometry between $A^p(D_1)$ and $A^p(D_2)$ for some $0 2, p\neq 2,4,\cdots$, provided that the $p$-Bergman kernels on $D_1$ and $D_2$ are exhaustive. With this as a motivation, we show that, for all $p>0$, the $p$-Bergman kernel on a strongly pseudoconvex domain with $\mathcal C^2$ boundary or a simply connected homogeneous regular domain is exhaustive. These results shows that spaces of pluricanonical sections of complex manifolds equipped with canonical pseudonorms are important invariants of complex manifolds. The second part of the present work devotes to studying variations of these invariants. We show that the direct image sheaf of the twisted relative $m$-pluricanonical bundle associated to a holomorphic family of Stein manifolds or compact Kähler manifolds is positively curved, with respect to the canonical singular Finsler metric.

Optimal Energy Management for Commercial Buildings Considering Comprehensive Comfort Levels in a Retail Electricity Market

Demand response has been implemented by distribution system operators to reduce peak demand and mitigate contingency issues on distribution lines and substations. Specifically, the campus based commercial buildings make the major contributions to peak demand in a distribution system. Note that prior works neglect the consumers comfort level in performing demand response, which limits their applications as the incentives are not worth as compared to the loss in comfort levels for most time. Thus, a framework to comprehensively consider both operating costs and comfort levels is necessary. Moreover, distributed energy resources are widely deployed in commercial buildings such as roof top solar panels, plug in electric vehicles, and energy storage units, which bring various uncertainties to the distribution systems, i.e., output of renewable; electricity prices; arrival and departure of plug-in electric vehicles; business hour demand response signals and flexible energy demand. In this paper, we propose an optimal demand response framework to enable local control of demand-side appliances that are usually too small to participate in a retail electricity market. Several typical small demand side appliances, i.e., heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, electric water heaters and plug-in electric vehicles, are considered in our proposed model. Their operations are coordinated by a central controller, whose objective is to minimize the total cost and maximize the customers comfort levels for multiple commercial buildings. A scenario-based stochastic programming is leveraged to handle the aforementioned uncertainties. Numerical results based on the practical data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. In addition, the trade off between the operation costs of commercial buildings and customers comfort levels is illustrated.

Semi-supervised mp-MRI Data Synthesis with StitchLayer and Auxiliary Distance Maximization

In this paper, we address the problem of synthesizing multi-parameter magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) data, i.e. Apparent Diffusion Coefficients (ADC) and T2-weighted (T2w), containing clinically significant (CS) prostate cancer (PCa) via semi-supervised adversarial learning. Specifically, our synthesizer generates mp-MRI data in a sequential manner: first generating ADC maps from 128-d latent vectors, followed by translating them to the T2w images. The synthesizer is trained in a semisupervised manner. In the supervised training process, a limited amount of paired ADC-T2w images and the corresponding ADC encodings are provided and the synthesizer learns the paired relationship by explicitly minimizing the reconstruction losses between synthetic and real images. To avoid overfitting limited ADC encodings, an unlimited amount of random latent vectors and unpaired ADC-T2w Images are utilized in the unsupervised training process for learning the marginal image distributions of real images. To improve the robustness of synthesizing, we decompose the difficult task of generating full-size images into several simpler tasks which generate sub-images only. A StitchLayer is then employed to fuse sub-images together in an interlaced manner into a full-size image. To enforce the synthetic images to indeed contain distinguishable CS PCa lesions, we propose to also maximize an auxiliary distance of Jensen-Shannon divergence (JSD) between CS and nonCS images. Experimental results show that our method can effectively synthesize a large variety of mpMRI images which contain meaningful CS PCa lesions, display a good visual quality and have the correct paired relationship. Compared to the state-of-the-art synthesis methods, our method achieves a significant improvement in terms of both visual and quantitative evaluation metrics.

A Rprop-Neural-Network-Based PV Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm with Short-Circuit Current Limitation

This paper proposes a resilient-backpropagation-neural-network-(Rprop-NN) based algorithm for Photovoltaic (PV) maximum power point tracking (MPPT). A supervision mechanism is proposed to calibrate the Rprop-NN-MPPT reference and limit short-circuit current caused by incorrect prediction. Conventional MPPT algorithms (e.g., perturb and observe (P&O), hill climbing, and incremental conductance (Inc-Cond) etc.) are trial-and-error-based, which may result in steady-state oscillations and loss of tracking direction under fast-changing ambient environment. In addition, partial shading is also a challenge due to the difficulty of finding the global maximum power point on a multi-peak characteristic curve. As an attempt to address the aforementioned issues, a novel Rprop-NN MPPT algorithm is developed and elaborated in this work. Multiple case studies are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Nematic Superconductivity in Cu1.5(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6

After the discovery of nematic topological superconductivity in CuxBi2Se3, carrier-doped topological insulators are established as a fertile ground for topological superconductors. The superconductor Cu1.5(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 (CPSBS) contains Bi2Se3 blocks as a constitutional unit, but its superconducting gap appears to have nodes [S. Sasaki et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 220504 (2014)], which is in contrast to the fully-opened gap in CuxBi2Se3 and the relation between the two superconductors remained an open question. Here we report our observation of clear two-fold symmetry in the in-plane magnetic-field-direction dependencies of the upper critical field and of the specific heat of CPSBS, where the direction of the maxima, which is different from that in CuxBi2Se3, indicates that the gap nodes are located in the mirror plane of the crystal lattice. This means that the topological nematic state with mirror-symmetry-protected nodes is realized in CPSBS.

Phonon mode calculations and Raman spectroscopy of the bulk-insulating topological insulator BiSbTeSe$_2$

The tetradymite compound BiSbTeSe$_2$, is one of the most bulk-insulating three-dimensional topological insulators, which makes it important in the topological insulator research. It is a member of the solid-solution system Bi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_{3-y}$Se$_y$, for which the local crystal structure, such as the occupation probabilities of each atomic site, is not well understood. We have investigated the temperature and polarization dependent spontaneous Raman scattering in BiSbTeSe$_2$, revealing a much higher number of lattice vibrational modes than predicted by group theoretical considerations for the space group R$\bar{3}$m corresponding to an ideally random solid-solution situation. The density functional calculations of phonon frequencies show a very good agreement with experimental data for parent material Bi$_2$Te$_3$, where no disorder effects were found. In comparison to Bi$_2$Te$_3$ the stacking disorder in BiSbTeSe$_2$, causes a discrepancy between theory and experiment. Combined analysis of experimental Raman spectra and DFT calculated phonon spectra for different types of atomic orders showed coexistence of different sequences of layers in the material and that those with Se in the center and a local order of Se-Bi-Se-Sb-Te, are the most favored.

Optimization of Battery Energy Storage to Improve Power System Oscillation Damping

A placement problem for multiple Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) units is formulated towards power system transient voltage stability enhancement in this paper. The problem is solved by the Cross-Entropy (CE) optimization method. A simulation-based approach is adopted to incorporate higher-order dynamics and nonlinearities of generators and loads. The objective is to maximize the voltage stability index, which is setup based on certain grid-codes. Formulations of the optimization problem are then discussed. Finally, the proposed approach is implemented in MATLAB/DIgSILENT and tested on the New England 39-Bus system. Results indicate that installing BESS units at the optimized location can alleviate transient voltage instability issue compared with the original system with no BESS. The CE placement algorithm is also compared with the classic PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) method, and its superiority is demonstrated in terms of a faster convergence rate with matched solution qualities.

Observation of Chiral Fermions with a Large Topological Charge and and Associated Fermi-Arc Surface States in CoSi

Topological semimetals materialize a new state of quantum matter where massless fermions protected by a specific crystal symmetry host exotic quantum phenomena. Distinct from well-known Dirac and Weyl fermions, structurally-chiral topological semimetals are predicted to host new types of massless fermions characterized by a large topological charge, whereas such exotic fermions are yet to be experimentally established. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we experimentally demonstrate that a transition-metal silicide CoSi hosts two types of chiral topological fermions, spin-1 chiral fermion and double Weyl fermion, in the center and corner of the bulk Brillouin zone, respectively. Intriguingly, we found that the bulk Fermi surfaces are purely composed of the energy bands related to these fermions. We also find the surface states connecting the Fermi surfaces associated with these fermions, suggesting the existence of the predicted Fermi-arc surface states. Our result provides the first experimental evidence for the chiral topological fermions beyond Dirac and Weyl fermions in condensed-matter systems, and paves the pathway toward realizing exotic electronic properties associated with unconventional chiral fermions.

Graph Based Power Flow Calculation for Energy Management System

Power flow calculation in EMS is required to accommodate a large and complex power system. To achieve a faster than real-time calculation, a graph based power flow calculation is proposed in this paper. Graph database and graph computing advantages in power system calculations are presented. A linear solver for power flow application is formulated and decomposed in nodal parallelism and hierarchical parallelism to fully utilize graph parallel computing capability. Comparison of the algorithm with traditional sequential programs shows significant benefits on computation efficiency. Case studies on practical large-scale systems provide supporting evidence that the new algorithm is promising for online computing for EMS.

Power Market Price Forecasting via Deep Learning

A study on power market price forecasting by deep learning is presented. As one of the most successful deep learning frameworks, the LSTM (Long short-term memory) neural network is utilized. The hourly prices data from the New England and PJM day-ahead markets are used in this study. First, a LSTM network is formulated and trained. Then the raw input and output data are preprocessed by unit scaling, and the trained network is tested on the real price data under different input lengths, forecasting horizons and data sizes. Its performance is also compared with other existing methods. The forecasted results demonstrate that, the LSTM deep neural network can outperform the others under different application settings in this problem.

Observation of Dirac-like energy band and unusual spectral line shape in quasi-one-dimensional superconductor Tl2Mo6Se6

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductor candidate Tl2Mo6Se6 consisting of weakly-coupled Mo3Se3 chains. We found a quasi-1D Fermi surface arising from a Dirac-like energy band, which is associated with the nonsymmorphic screw symmetry of the chains and predicted to trigger topological superconductivity. We observed a significant spectral-weight reduction over a wide energy range, together with a tiny Fermi-edge structure which exhibits a signature of a superconducting-gap opening below the superconducting-transition temperature. The observed quasi-1D Dirac-like band and its very small density of states point to an unconventional nature of superconductivity in Tl2Mo6Se6.

Observation of band crossings protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry in the layered ternary telluride Ta3SiTe6

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of layered ternary telluride Ta3SiTe6 which is predicted to host nodal lines associated with nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry. We found that the energy bands in the valence-band region show Dirac-like dispersions which present a band degeneracy at the R point of the bulk orthorhombic Brillouin zone. This band degeneracy extends one-dimensionally along the whole SR high-symmetry line, forming the nodal lines protected by the glide mirror symmetry of the crystal. We also observed a small band splitting near EF which supports the existence of hourglass-type dispersions predicted by the calculation. The present results provide an excellent opportunity to investigate the interplay between exotic nodal fermions and nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry.

Small-signal Stability Analysis and Performance Evaluation of Microgrids under Distributed Control

Distributed control, as a potential solution to decreasing communication demands in microgrids, has drawn much attention in recent years. Advantages of distributed control have been extensively discussed, while its impacts on microgrid performance and stability, especially in the case of communication latency, have not been explicitly studied or fully understood yet. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a generalized theoretical framework for small-signal stability analysis and performance evaluation for microgrids using distributed control. The proposed framework synthesizes generator and load frequency-domain characteristics, primary and secondary control loops, as well as the communication latency into a frequency-domain representation which is further evaluated by the generalized Nyquist theorem. In addition, various parameters and their impacts on microgrid dynamic performance are investigated and summarized into guidelines to help better design the system. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
