Power Flow Analysis Using Graph based Combination of Iterative Methods and Vertex Contraction Approach

Compared with relational database (RDB), graph database (GDB) is a more intuitive expression of the real world. Each node in the GDB is a both storage and logic unit. Since it is connected to its neighboring nodes through edges, and its neighboring information could be easily obtained in one-step graph traversal. It is able to conduct local computation independently and all nodes can do their local work in parallel. Then the whole system can be maximally analyzed and assessed in parallel to largely improve the computation performance without sacrificing the precision of final results. This paper firstly introduces graph database, power system graph modeling and potential graph computing applications in power systems. Two iterative methods based on graph database and PageRank are presented and their convergence are discussed. Vertex contraction is proposed to improve the performance by eliminating zero-impedance branch. A combination of the two iterative methods is proposed to make use of their advantages. Testing results based on a provincial 1425-bus system demonstrate that the proposed comprehensive approach is a good candidate for power flow analysis.

Compared with traditional relational database, graph database, GDB, is a natural expression of most real-world systems. Each node in the GDB is not only a storage unit, but also a logic operation unit to implement local computation in parallel. This paper firstly explores the feasibility of power system modeling using GDB. Then a brief introduction of the PageRank algorithm and the feasibility analysis of its application in GDB are presented. Then the proposed GDB based bilevel PageRank algorithm is developed from PageRank algorithm and Gauss Seidel methodology realize high performance parallel computation. MP 10790 case, and its extensions, MP 107900 and MP 1079000, are tested to verify the proposed method and investigate its parallelism in GDB. Besides, a provincial system, FJ case which include 1425 buses and 1922 branches, is also included in the case study to further prove the proposed algorithm effectiveness in real world.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy investigations of superconducting-doped topological insulators: Experimental pitfalls and results

Recently the doping of topological insulators has attracted significant interest as a potential route towards topological superconductivity. Because many experimental techniques lack sufficient surface sensitivity, however, a definite proof of the coexistence of topological surface states and surface superconductivity is still outstanding. Here we report on highly surface sensitive scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) experiments performed on Tl-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$, a three-dimensional topological insulator which becomes superconducting in the bulk at $T_{\rm C} = 2.3$\,K. Landau level spectroscopy as well as quasiparticle interference mapping clearly demonstrated the presence of a topological surface state with a Dirac point energy $E_{\textrm{D}} = -(118 \pm 1)$\,meV and a Dirac velocity $v_{\textrm{D}} = (4.7 \pm 0.1)\cdot 10^{5}$\,m/s. Tunneling spectra often show a superconducting gap, but temperature- and field-dependent measurements show that both $T_{\rm C}$ and $μ_0 H_{\rm C}$ strongly deviate from the corresponding bulk values. Furthermore, in spite of acritical field value which clearly points to type-II superconductivity, no Abrikosov lattice could be observed. Experiments performed on normal-metallic Ag(111) prove that the gapped spectrum is only caused by superconducting tips, probably caused by a gentle crash with the sample surface during approach. Nearly identical results were found for the intrinsically n-type compound Nb-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in superconducting-doped V-VI topological insulators does not extend to the surface where the topological surface state is located.

Linked Recurrent Neural Networks

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have been proven to be effective in modeling sequential data and they have been applied to boost a variety of tasks such as document classification, speech recognition and machine translation. Most of existing RNN models have been designed for sequences assumed to be identically and independently distributed (i.i.d). However, in many real-world applications, sequences are naturally linked. For example, web documents are connected by hyperlinks; and genes interact with each other. On the one hand, linked sequences are inherently not i.i.d., which poses tremendous challenges to existing RNN models. On the other hand, linked sequences offer link information in addition to the sequential information, which enables unprecedented opportunities to build advanced RNN models. In this paper, we study the problem of RNN for linked sequences. In particular, we introduce a principled approach to capture link information and propose a linked Recurrent Neural Network (LinkedRNN), which models sequential and link information coherently. We conduct experiments on real-world datasets from multiple domains and the experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Anomalous Fraunhofer patterns in gated Josephson junctions based on the bulk-insulating topological insulator BiSbTeSe2

One-dimensional Majorana modes are predicated to form in Josephson junctions based on three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs). While observations of supercurrents in Josephson junctions made on bulk-insulating TI samples are recently reported, the Fraunhofer patters observed in such TI-based Josephson junctions, which sometimes present anomalous features, are still not well understood. Here we report our study of highly gate-tunable TI-based Josephson junctions made of one of the most bulk-insulating TI materials, BiSbTeSe2, and Al. The Fermi level can be tuned by gating across the Dirac point, and the high transparency of the Al/BiSbTeSe2 interface is evinced by a high characteristic voltage and multiple Andreev reflections with peak indices reaching 12. Anomalous Fraunhofer patterns with missing lobes were observed in the entire range of gate voltage. We found that, by employing an advanced fitting procedure to use the maximum entropy method in a Monte Carlo algorithm, the anomalous Fraunhofer patterns are explained as a result of inhomogeneous supercurrent distributions on the TI surface in the junction. Besides establishing a highly promising fabrication technology, this work clarifies one of the important open issues regarding TI-based Josephson junctions.

Optimal Allocation of Series FACTS Devices Under High Penetration of Wind Power Within a Market Environment

Series FACTS devices are one of the key enablers for very high penetration of renewables due to their capabilities in continuously controlling power flows on transmission lines. This paper proposes a bilevel optimization model to optimally locate variable series reactor (VSR) and phase shifting transformer (PST) in the transmission network considering high penetration of wind power. The upper level problem seeks to minimize the \textcolor{black}{investment cost} on series FACTS, the cost of wind power curtailment and possible load shedding. The lower level problems capture the market clearing under different operating scenarios. Due to the poor scalability of $Bθ$ formulation, the \textsl{shift factor} structure of FACTS allocation is derived. A customized reformulation and decomposition algorithm is designed and implemented to solve the proposed bilevel model with binary variables in both upper and lower levels. Detailed numerical results based on 118-bus system demonstrate the efficient performance of the proposed planning model and the important role of series FACTS for facilitating the integration of wind power.

CIM/E Oriented Graph Database Model Architecture and Parallel Network Topology Processing

CIM/E is an easy and efficient electric power model exchange standard between different Energy Management System vendors. With the rapid growth of data size and system complexity, the traditional relational database is not the best option to store and process the data. In contrast, the graph database and graph computation show their potential advantages to handle the power system data and perform real-time data analytics and computation. The graph concept fits power grid data naturally because of the fundamental structure similarity. Vertex and edge in the graph database can act as both a parallel storage unit and a computation unit. In this paper, the CIM/E data is modeled into the graph database. Based on this model, the parallel network topology processing algorithm is established and conducted by applying graph computation. The modeling and parallel network topology processing have been demonstrated in the modified IEEE test cases and practical Sichuan power network. The processing efficiency is greatly improved using the proposed method.

Sensitivity Based Thevenin Index for Voltage Stability Assessment Considering N-1 Contingency

This paper proposes an approach to address the voltage stability assessment (VSA) considering N-1 contingency. The approach leverages the sensitivity based Thevenin index (STI) which involves evaluating the Jacobian matrix at current operating condition. Since the N-1 contingency case is hypothetical, there is no information regarding the operating condition after a foreseen contingency. The proposed approach first estimates the post-contingency operating point as well as possible PV-PQ transitions based on the current operating point. Then the STI for each contingency can be predicted using the estimated operating condition. Numerical results based on IEEE 14-bus system demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed approach in predicting the voltage stability margin under contingency. Moreover, the on-line implementation of the proposed approach is promising since it only involves solving several linear equations.

Exploration of Graph Computing in Power System State Estimation

With the increased complexity of power systems due to the integration of smart grid technologies and renewable energy resources, more frequent changes have been introduced to system status, and the traditional serial mode of state estimation algorithm cannot well meet the restrict time-constrained requirement for the future dynamic power grid, even with advanced computer hardware. To guarantee the grid reliability and minimize the impacts caused by system status fluctuations, a fast, even SCADA-rate, state estimator is urgently needed. In this paper, a graph based power system modeling is firstly explored and a graph computing based state estimation is proposed to speed up its performance. The power system is represented by a graph, which is a collection of vertices and edges, and the measurements are attributes of vertices and edges. Each vertex can independently implement local computation, like formulations of the node-based H matrix, gain matrix and righthand-side (RHS) vector, only with the information on its connected edges and neighboring vertices. Then, by taking advantages of graph database, these node-based data are conveniently collected and stored in the compressed sparse row (CSR) format avoiding the complexity and heaviness introduced by the sparse matrices. With communications and synchronization, centralized computation of solving the weighted least square (WLS) state estimation is completed with hierarchical parallel computing. The proposed strategy is implemented on a graph database platform. The testing results of IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 118-bus systems and a provincial system in China verify the accuracy and high-performance of the proposed methodology.

Ni Foam Assisted Synthesis of High Quality Hexagonal Boron Nitride with Large Domain Size and Controllable Thickness

The scalable synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is of great interest for its numerous applications in novel electronic devices. Highly-crystalline h-BN films, with single-crystal sizes up to hundreds of microns, are demonstrated via a novel Ni foam assisted technique reported here for the first time. The nucleation density of h-BN domains can be significantly reduced due to the high boron solubility, as well as the large specific surface area of the Ni foam. The crystalline structure of the h-BN domains is found to be well aligned with, and therefore strongly dependent upon, the underlying Pt lattice orientation. Growth-time dependent experiments confirm the presence of a surface mediated self-limiting growth mechanism for monolayer h-BN on the Pt substrate. However, utilizing remote catalysis from the Ni foam, bilayer h-BN films can be synthesized breaking the self-limiting effect. This work provides further understanding of the mechanisms involved in the growth of h-BN and proposes a facile synthesis technique that may be applied to further applications in which control over the crystal alignment, and the numbers of layers is crucial.

Optimal Distributed Energy Resources Sizing for Commercial Building Hybrid Microgrids

As microgrids have advanced from early prototypes to relatively mature technologies, converting data center integrated commercial buildings to microgrids provides economic, reliability and resiliency enhancements for the building owners. Thus, microgrid design and economically sizing distributed energy resources (DER) are becoming more demanding to gain widespread microgrids commercial viability. In this paper, an optimal DER sizing formulation for a hybrid AC/DC microgrid configuration has been proposed to leverage all benefits that AC or DC microgrid could solely contribute. Energy storage (ES), photovoltaics (PV) and power electronics devices are coordinately sized for economic grid-connected and reliable islanded operations. Time-of-use (TOU) energy usages charges and peak demand charges are explicitly modeled to achieve maximum level of cost savings. Numerical results obtained from a real commercial building load demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach and the importance of jointly sizing DER for the grid-connected and islanded modes.

A Robust Power Grid Defense Model Considering Load Demand and Wind Generation Uncertainties

It is a major task to develop effective strategies for defending the power system against deliberate attacks. It is critical to comprehensively consider the human-related and environmental risks and uncertainties, which is missing in existing literature. This paper considers the load demand uncertainties and wind generation uncertainties in addition to the interactive attacker/defender behaviors. Specifically, a defender-attacker-nature-operator model is proposed, which incorporates the attack/defense interaction, the corrective re-dispatch of the operator, the coordination between the attack strategy and the stochastic nature of load demands and wind generations. The Column-and-Constraint Generation (C&CG) algorithm is adopted for solving the proposed model by decomposing the proposed model into a master problem and a sub-problem. Simulations are performed using MATLAB and CPLEX on a modified IEEE RTS79 system. The simulation results verify the validity of the proposed model.

Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for Islanded Hybrid Microgrids

Microgrids consisting of multiple distributed energy resources (DERs) provide a promising solution to integrate renewable energies, e.g., solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Hybrid AC/DC microgrids leverage the merits of both AC and DC power systems. In this paper, a control strategy for islanded multi-bus hybrid microgrids is proposed based on the Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) technologies. The control loops are expedited by predicting the future states and determining the optimal control action before switching signals are sent. The proposed algorithm eliminates the needs of PI, PWM, and droop components, and offers 1) accurate PV maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and battery charging/discharging control, 2) DC and multiple AC bus voltage/frequency regulation, 3) a precise power sharing scheme among DERs without voltage or frequency deviation, and 4) a unified MPC design flow for hybrid microgrids. Multiple case studies are carried out, which verify the satisfactory performance of the proposed method.

The Allocation of a Variable Series Reactor Considering AC Constraints and Contingencies

The Variable Series Reactors (VSRs) can efficiently control the power flow through the adjustment of the line reactance. When they are appropriately allocated in the power network, the transmission congestion and generation cost can be reduced. This paper proposes a planning model to optimally allocate VSRs considering AC constraints and multi-scenarios including base case and contingencies. The planning model is originally a non-convex large scale mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP), which is generally intractable. The proposed Benders approach decomposes the MINLP model into a mixed integer linear program (MILP) master problem and a number of nonlinear subproblems. Numerical case studies based on IEEE 118-bus demonstrate the high performance of the proposed approach.

On Grauert-Riemenschneider type criterions

Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Hermitian manifold of complex dimension $n$. In this article, we first survey recent progress towards Grauert-Riemenschneider type criterions. Secondly, we give a simplified proof of Boucksom's conjecture given by the author under the assumption that the Hermitian metric $ω$ satisfies $\partial\overline{\partial}ω^l=$ for all $l$, i.e., if $T$ is a closed positive current on $X$ such that $\int_XT_{ac}^n>0$, then the class $\{T\}$ is big and $X$ is Kähler. Finally, as an easy observation, we point out that Nguyen's result can be generalized as follows: if $\partial\overline{\partial}ω=0$, and $T$ is a closed positive current with analytic singularities, such that $\int_XT^n_{ac}>0$, then the class $\{T\}$ is big and $X$ is Kähler.

Local Demailly-Bouche's holomorphic Morse inequalities

Let $(X,ω)$ be a Hermitian manifold and let $(E,h^E)$, $(F,h^F)$ be two Hermitian holomorphic line bundle over $X$. Suppose that the maximal rank of the Chern curvature $c(E)$ of $E$ is $r$, and the kernel of $c(E)$ is foliated, i.e. there is a foliation $Y$ of $X$, of complex codimension $r$, such that the tangent space of the leaf at each point $x\in X$ is contained in the kernel of $c(E)$. In this paper, local versions of Demailly-Bouche's holomorphic Morse inequalities (which give asymptotic bounds for cohomology groups $H^{q}(X,E^k\otimes F^l)$ as $k,l,k/l\rightarrow \infty$) are presented. The local version holds on any Hermitian manifold regardless of compactness and completeness. The proof is a variation of Berman's method to derive holomorphic Morse inequalities on compact complex manifolds with boundary.

On the volume of a pseudo-effective class and semi-positive properties of the Harder-Narasimhan filtration on a compact Hermitian manifold

This paper divides into two parts. Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Hermitian manifold. Firstly, if the Hermitian metric $ω$ satisfies the assumption that $\partial\overline{\partial}ω^k=0$ for all $k$, we generalize the volume of the cohomology class in the Kähler setting to the Hermitian setting, and prove that the volume is always finite and the Grauert-Riemenschneider type criterion holds true, which is a partial answer to a conjecture posed by Boucksom. Secondly, we observe that if the anticanonical bundle $K^{-1}_X$ is nef, then for any $\varepsilon>0$, there is a smooth function $ϕ_\varepsilon$ on $X$ such that $ω_\varepsilon:=ω+i\partial\overline{\partial}ϕ_\varepsilon>0$ and Ricci$(ω_\varepsilon)\geq-\varepsilonω_\varepsilon$. Furthermore, if $ω$ satisfies the assumption as above, we prove that for a Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $T_X$ with respect to $ω$, the slopes $μ_ω(\mathcal{F}_i/\mathcal{F}_{i-1})\geq 0$ for all $i$, which generalizes a result of Cao which plays a very important role in his studying of the structures of Kähler manifolds.

Recover the lost Phasor Measurement Unit Data Using Alternating Direction Multipliers Method

This paper presents a novel algorithm for recovering missing data of phasor measurement units (PMUs). Due to the low-rank property of PMU data, missing measurement recovery can be formulated as a low-rank matrix-completion problem. Based on maximum-margin matrix factorization, we propose an efficient algorithm based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for solving the matrix completion problem. Comparing to existing approaches, the proposed ADMM based algorithm does not need to estimate the rank of the target data matrix and provides better performance in computation complexity. In addition, we consider the case of measurements missing from all PMU channels and provide a strategy of reshaping the matrix which contains the received PMU data for recovery. Numerical results using PMU measurements from IEEE 68-bus power system model illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approaches.
