Local pairing versus bulk superconductivity intertwined by the charge density wave order in Cs(V$_{1-x}$Ta$_{x}$)$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$

There is a common belief that superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order accommodate homogenously in real space but compete with each other for the effective density of states in momentum space in CDW superconductors. By measuring resistivity along the $c$-axis in Cs(V$_{1-x}$Ta$_{x}$)$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, we observe strong superconducting fluctuation behavior coexisting with the CDW order in the pristine CsV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, and the fluctuation region becomes narrowed when the Ta doping suppresses the CDW order. The onset transition temperature barely changes with the Ta doping. Therefore, the bulk superconductivity may be established by a doping-independent local pairing, and it can be suppressed in some regions by the spatially variable CDW order along the $c$-axis. Our results violate the above-mentioned belief about CDW superconductors and demonstrate the intricate interaction between superconductivity and CDW order in this kagome superconductor.

On the Range of a class of Complex Monge-Ampère operators on compact Hermitian manifolds

Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Hermitian manifold of complex dimension $n$. Let $β$ be a smooth real closed $(1,1)$ form such that there exists a function $ρ\in \mbox{PSH}(X,β)\cap L^{\infty}(X)$. We study the range of the complex non-pluripolar Monge-Ampère operator $\langle(β+dd^c\cdot)^n\rangle$ on weighted Monge-Ampère energy classes on $X$. In particular, when $ρ$ is assumed to be continuous, we give a complete characterization of the range of the complex Monge-Ampère operator on the class $\mathcal E(X,β)$, which is the class of all $φ\in \mbox{PSH}(X,β)$ with full Monge-Ampère mass, i.e. $\int_X\langle (β+dd^cφ)^n\rangle=\int_Xβ^n$.

Orbital Magneto-Nonlinear Anomalous Hall Effect in Kagome Magnet Fe$_3$Sn$_2$

It has been theoretically predicted that perturbation of the Berry curvature by electromagnetic fields gives rise to intrinsic nonlinear anomalous Hall effects that are independent of scattering. Two types of nonlinear anomalous Hall effects are expected. The electric nonlinear Hall effect has recently begun to receive attention, while very few studies are concerned with the magneto-nonlinear Hall effect. Here, we combine experiment and first-principles calculations to show that the kagome ferromagnet Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ displays such a magneto-nonlinear Hall effect. By systematic field angular and temperature-dependent transport measurements, we unambiguously identify a large anomalous Hall current that is linear in both applied in-plane electric and magnetic fields, utilizing a unique in-plane configuration. We clarify its dominant orbital origin and connect it to the magneto-nonlinear Hall effect. The effect is governed by the intrinsic quantum geometric properties of Bloch electrons. Our results demonstrate the significance of the quantum geometry of electron wave functions from the orbital degree of freedom and open up a new direction in Hall transport effects.

Two-fold symmetric superconductivity in the kagome superconductor RbV3Sb5

The recently discovered kagome superconductors offer a promising platform for investigating intertwined orders and novel states, including topology, superconductivity, charge density waves, and more. The interplay among these orders can spontaneously break rotational symmetry, giving rise to exotic phenomena such as nematicity or even nematic superconductivity. Here we present our findings on the two-fold symmetric superconductivity in thin-flake RbV3Sb5 in response to direction-dependent in-plane magnetic fields, in contrast to the inherent six-fold structural symmetry of the crystal lattice. The two-fold symmetry was evidenced through a combination of magnetoresistance transport experiments, critical magnetic field measurements, and observations of anisotropic superconducting gaps. Additionally, by altering the experimental configuration, we also detected the presence of six-fold symmetric components superimposed on the two-fold symmetry at the boundary between normal and superconducting states. Our results underscore the correlation-driven symmetry-breaking phenomena and emphasize the potential of this correlated kagome family as a promising platform for investigating intertwined orders, including unconventional superconductivity.

Stealthy Adversarial Attacks on Stochastic Multi-Armed Bandits

Adversarial attacks against stochastic multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithms have been extensively studied in the literature. In this work, we focus on reward poisoning attacks and find most existing attacks can be easily detected by our proposed detection method based on the test of homogeneity, due to their aggressive nature in reward manipulations. This motivates us to study the notion of stealthy attack against stochastic MABs and investigate the resulting attackability. Our analysis shows that against two popularly employed MAB algorithms, UCB1 and $ε$-greedy, the success of a stealthy attack depends on the environmental conditions and the realized reward of the arm pulled in the first round. We also analyze the situation for general MAB algorithms equipped with our attack detection method and find that it is possible to have a stealthy attack that almost always succeeds. This brings new insights into the security risks of MAB algorithms.

Transport response of topological hinge modes in $α$-Bi$_4$Br$_4$

Electronic topological phases are renowned for their unique properties, where conducting surface states exist on the boundary of an insulating three-dimensional bulk. While the transport response of the surface states has been extensively studied, the response of the topological hinge modes remains elusive. Here, we investigate a layered topological insulator $α$-Bi$_4$Br$_4$, and provide the first evidence for quantum transport in gapless topological hinge states existing within the insulating bulk and surface energy gaps. Our magnetoresistance measurements reveal pronounced h/e periodic (where h denotes Planck's constant and e represents the electron charge) Aharonov-Bohm oscillation. The observed periodicity, which directly reflects the enclosed area of phase-coherent electron propagation, matches the area enclosed by the sample hinges, providing compelling evidence for the quantum interference of electrons circumnavigating around the hinges. Notably, the h/e oscillations evolve as a function of magnetic field orientation, following the interference paths along the hinge modes that are allowed by topology and symmetry, and in agreement with the locations of the hinge modes according to our scanning tunneling microscopy images. Remarkably, this demonstration of quantum transport in a topological insulator can be achieved using a flake geometry and we show that it remains robust even at elevated temperatures. Our findings collectively reveal the quantum transport response of topological hinge modes with both topological nature and quantum coherence, which can be directly applied to the development of efficient quantum electronic devices.

Tunable vortex bound states in multiband CsV3Sb5-derived kagome superconductors

Vortices and bound states offer an effective means of comprehending the electronic properties of superconductors. Recently, surface dependent vortex core states have been observed in the newly discovered kagome superconductors CsV3Sb5. Although the spatial distribution of the sharp zero energy conductance peak appears similar to Majorana bound states arising from the superconducting Dirac surface states, its origin remains elusive. In this study, we present observations of tunable vortex bound states (VBSs) in two chemically doped kagome superconductors Cs(V1-xTrx)3Sb5 (Tr=Ta or Ti), using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. The CsV3Sb5-derived kagome superconductors exhibit full gap pairing superconductivity accompanied by the absence of long range charge orders, in contrast to pristine CsV3Sb5. Zero energy conductance maps demonstrate a field-driven continuous reorientation transition of the vortex lattice, suggesting multiband superconductivity. The Ta doped CsV3Sb5 displays the conventional cross shaped spatial evolution of Caroli de Gennes Matricon bound states, while the Ti doped CsV3Sb5 exhibits a sharp, non split zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) that persists over a long distance across the vortex. The spatial evolution of the non split ZBCP is robust against surface effects and external magnetic field but is related to the doping concentrations. Our study reveals the tunable VBSs in multiband chemically doped CsV3Sb5 system and offers fresh insights into previously reported Y shaped ZBCP in a non quantum limit condition at the surface of kagome superconductor.

Discovery of a Topological Charge Density Wave

Charge density waves (CDWs) appear in numerous condensed matter platforms, ranging from high-Tc superconductors to quantum Hall systems. Despite such ubiquity, there has been a lack of direct experimental study on boundary states that can uniquely stem from the charge order. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy, we directly visualize the bulk and boundary phenomenology of CDW in a topological material, Ta2Se8I. Below the transition temperature (TCDW = 260 K), tunneling spectra on an atomically resolved lattice reveal a large insulating gap in the bulk and on the surface, exceeding 500 meV, surpassing predictions from standard weakly-coupled mean-field theory. Spectroscopic imaging confirms the presence of CDW, with LDOS maxima at the conduction band corresponding to the LDOS minima at the valence band, thus revealing a π phase difference in the respective CDW order. Concomitantly, at a monolayer step edge, we detect an in-gap boundary mode with modulations along the edge that match the CDW wavevector along the edge. Intriguingly, the phase of the edge state modulation shifts by π within the charge order gap, connecting the fully gapped bulk (and surface) conduction and valence bands via a smooth energy-phase relation. This bears similarity to the topological spectral flow of edge modes, where the boundary modes bridge the gapped bulk modes in energy and momentum magnitude but in Ta2Se8I, the connectivity distinctly occurs in energy and momentum phase. Notably, our temperature-dependent measurements indicate a vanishing of the insulating gap and the in-gap edge state above TCDW, suggesting their direct relation to CDW. The theoretical analysis also indicates that the observed boundary mode is topological and linked to CDW.

Anchor function: a type of benchmark functions for studying language models

Understanding transformer-based language models is becoming increasingly crucial, particularly as they play pivotal roles in advancing towards artificial general intelligence. However, language model research faces significant challenges, especially for academic research groups with constrained resources. These challenges include complex data structures, unknown target functions, high computational costs and memory requirements, and a lack of interpretability in the inference process, etc. Drawing a parallel to the use of simple models in scientific research, we propose the concept of an anchor function. This is a type of benchmark function designed for studying language models in learning tasks that follow an "anchor-key" pattern. By utilizing the concept of an anchor function, we can construct a series of functions to simulate various language tasks. The anchor function plays a role analogous to that of mice in diabetes research, particularly suitable for academic research. We demonstrate the utility of the anchor function with an example, revealing two basic operations by attention structures in language models: shifting tokens and broadcasting one token from one position to many positions. These operations are also commonly observed in large language models. The anchor function framework, therefore, opens up a series of valuable and accessible research questions for further exploration, especially for theoretical study.

SegRap2023: A Benchmark of Organs-at-Risk and Gross Tumor Volume Segmentation for Radiotherapy Planning of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Radiation therapy is a primary and effective NasoPharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) treatment strategy. The precise delineation of Gross Tumor Volumes (GTVs) and Organs-At-Risk (OARs) is crucial in radiation treatment, directly impacting patient prognosis. Previously, the delineation of GTVs and OARs was performed by experienced radiation oncologists. Recently, deep learning has achieved promising results in many medical image segmentation tasks. However, for NPC OARs and GTVs segmentation, few public datasets are available for model development and evaluation. To alleviate this problem, the SegRap2023 challenge was organized in conjunction with MICCAI2023 and presented a large-scale benchmark for OAR and GTV segmentation with 400 Computed Tomography (CT) scans from 200 NPC patients, each with a pair of pre-aligned non-contrast and contrast-enhanced CT scans. The challenge's goal was to segment 45 OARs and 2 GTVs from the paired CT scans. In this paper, we detail the challenge and analyze the solutions of all participants. The average Dice similarity coefficient scores for all submissions ranged from 76.68\% to 86.70\%, and 70.42\% to 73.44\% for OARs and GTVs, respectively. We conclude that the segmentation of large-size OARs is well-addressed, and more efforts are needed for GTVs and small-size or thin-structure OARs. The benchmark will remain publicly available here: https://segrap2023.grand-challenge.org

Discovery of a Single-Band Mott Insulator in a van der Waals Flat-Band Compound

The Mott insulator provides an excellent foundation for exploring a wide range of strongly correlated physical phenomena, such as high-temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquid, and colossal magnetoresistance. A Mott insulator with the simplest degree of freedom is an ideal and highly desirable system for studying the fundamental physics of Mottness. In this study, we have unambiguously identified such an anticipated Mott insulator in a van der Waals layered compound Nb3Cl8. In the high-temperature phase, where interlayer coupling is negligible, density functional theory calculations for the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 suggest a half-filled flat band at the Fermi level, whereas angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments observe a large gap. This observation is perfectly reproduced by dynamical mean-field theory calculations considering strong electron correlations, indicating a correlation-driven Mott insulator state. Since this half-filled band derived from a single 2a1 orbital is isolated from all other bands, the monolayer of Nb3Cl8 is an ideal realization of the celebrated single-band Hubbard model. Upon decreasing the temperature, the bulk system undergoes a phase transition, where structural changes significantly enhance the interlayer coupling. This results in a bonding-antibonding splitting in the Hubbard bands, while the Mott gap remains dominant. Our discovery provides a simple and seminal model system for investigating Mott physics and other emerging correlated states.

Pressure-Modulated Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in Two-Dimensional FeTe: Tetragonal and Hexagonal Polymorphs

Two-dimensional (2D) Fe-chalcogenides with rich structures, magnetisms and superconductivities are highly desirable to reveal the torturous transition mechanism and explore their potential applications in spintronics and nanoelectronics. Hydrostatic pressure can effectively stimulate novel phase transitions between various ordered states and to plot the seductive phase diagram. Herein, the structural evolution and transport characteristics of 2D FeTe were systematically investigated under extreme conditions through comparing two distinct symmetries, i.e., tetragonal (t-) and hexagonal (h-) FeTe. We found that 2D t-FeTe presented the pressure-induced transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic states at ~ 3 GPa, corresponding to the tetragonal collapse of layered structure. Contrarily, ferromagnetic order of 2D h-FeTe was retained up to 15 GPa, evidently confirmed by electrical transport and Raman measurements. Furthermore, the detailed P-T phase diagrams of both 2D t-FeTe and h-FeTe were mapped out with the delicate critical conditions. We believe our results can provide a unique platform to elaborate the extraordinary physical properties of Fe-chalcogenides and further to develop their practical applications.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity and Structure Phase Transition in SnAs-based Zintl Compound SrSn2As2

Layered SnAs-based Zintl compounds exhibit a distinctive electronic structure, igniting extensive research efforts in areas of superconductivity, topological insulators and quantum magnetism. In this paper, we systematically investigate the crystal structures and electronic properties of the Zintl compound SrSn2As2 under high-pressure. At approximately 20.8 GPa, pressure-induced superconductivity is observed in SrSn2As2 with a characteristic dome-like evolution of Tc. Theoretical calculations together with high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have identified that SrSn2As2 undergoes a structural transformation from a trigonal to a monoclinic structure. Beyond 28.3 GPa, the superconducting transition temperature is suppressed due to a reduction of the density of state at the Fermi level. The discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity, accompanied by structural transitions in SrSn2As2, greatly expands the physical properties of layered SnAs-based compounds and provides a new ground states upon compression.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity and Topological Quantum Phase Transitions in the Topological Semimetal ZrTe2

Topological transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted much attention due to its potential applications in spintronics and quantum computations. In this work, we systematically investigate the structural and electronic properties of topological TMDCs candidate ZrTe2 under high pressure. A pressure-induced Lifshitz transition is evidenced by the change of charge carrier type as well as the Fermi surface. Superconductivity was observed at around 8.3 GPa without structural phase transition. A typical dome-shape phase diagram is obtained with the maximum Tc of 5.6 K for ZrTe2. Furthermore, our theoretical calculations suggest the presence of multiple pressure-induced topological quantum phase transitions, which coexists with emergence of superconductivity. The results demonstrate that ZrTe2 with nontrivial topology of electronic states display new ground states upon compression.

CR eigenvalue estimate and Kohn-Rossi cohomology

Let $X$ be a compact connected CR manifold with a transversal CR $S^1$-action of real dimension $2n-1$, which is only assumed to be weakly pseudoconvex. Let $\Box_b$ be the $\overline{\partial}_b$-Laplacian, with respect to a $T$-rigid Hermitian metric (see Definition 3.2 of $T$-rigid Hermitian metric). Eigenvalue estimate of $\Box_b$ is a fundamental issue both in CR geometry and analysis. In this paper, we are able to obtain a sharp estimate of the number of eigenvalues smaller than or equal to $λ$ of $\Box_b$ acting on the $m$-th Fourier components of smooth $(n-1,q)$-forms on $X$, where $m\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ and $q=0,1,\cdots, n-1$. Here the sharp means the growth order with respect to $m$ is sharp. In particular, when $λ=0$, we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the growth for $m$-th Fourier components $H^{n-1,q}_{b,m}(X)$ of $H^{n-1,q}_b(X)$ as $m \rightarrow +\infty$. Furthermore, we establish a Serre type duality theorem for Fourier components of Kohn-Rossi cohomology which is of independent interest. As a byproduct, the asymptotic growth of the dimensions of the Fourier components $H^{0,q}_{b,-m}(X)$ for $ m\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ is established. We also give appilcations of our main results, including Morse type inequalities, asymptotic Riemann-Roch type theorem, Grauert-Riemenscheider type criterion, and an orbifold version of our main results which provides an answer towards a folklore open problem informed to us by Hsiao.

Approximation and extension of Hermitian metrics on holomorphic vector bundles over Stein manifolds

We show that a singular Hermitian metric on a holomorphic vector bundle over a Stein manifold which is negative in the sense of Griffiths (resp. Nakano) can be approximated by a sequence of smooth Hermitian metrics with the same curvature negativity. We also show that a smooth Hermitian metric on a holomorphic vector bundle over a Stein manifold restricted to a submanifold which is negative in the sense of Griffiths (resp. Nakano) can be extended to the whole bundle with the same curvature negativity.

A note on Demailly's transcendental Morse inequalities conjecture

Let $(X,ω)$ be an $n$-dimensional compact Hermitian manifold with $ω$ a pluriclosed Hermitian metric, i.e. $dd^cω=0$. Let $\{α\},\{β\}\in H^{1,1}_{BC}(X,\mathbb R)$ be two nef classes, such that $α^n-nα^{n-1}\cdotβ>0$. In this short note, we prove that if there is a bounded quasi-plurisubharmonic potential $ρ$, such that $α+dd^cρ\geq 0$ in the weak sense of currents, then the class $\{α-β\}$ contains a Kähler current. This gives a partial solution of Demailly's transcendental Morse inequalities conjecture.

Bi-Modality Medical Image Synthesis Using Semi-Supervised Sequential Generative Adversarial Networks

In this paper, we propose a bi-modality medical image synthesis approach based on sequential generative adversarial network (GAN) and semi-supervised learning. Our approach consists of two generative modules that synthesize images of the two modalities in a sequential order. A method for measuring the synthesis complexity is proposed to automatically determine the synthesis order in our sequential GAN. Images of the modality with a lower complexity are synthesized first, and the counterparts with a higher complexity are generated later. Our sequential GAN is trained end-to-end in a semi-supervised manner. In supervised training, the joint distribution of bi-modality images are learned from real paired images of the two modalities by explicitly minimizing the reconstruction losses between the real and synthetic images. To avoid overfitting limited training images, in unsupervised training, the marginal distribution of each modality is learned based on unpaired images by minimizing the Wasserstein distance between the distributions of real and fake images. We comprehensively evaluate the proposed model using two synthesis tasks based on three types of evaluate metrics and user studies. Visual and quantitative results demonstrate the superiority of our method to the state-of-the-art methods, and reasonable visual quality and clinical significance. Code is made publicly available at https://github.com/hustlinyi/Multimodal-Medical-Image-Synthesis.
