Efficient Byzantine Fault Tolerance using Trusted Execution Environment: Preventing Equivocation is only the Beginning

With the rapid development of blockchain, Byzantine fault-tolerant protocols have attracted revived interest recently. To overcome the theoretical bounds of Byzantine fault tolerance, many protocols attempt to use Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) to prevent equivocation and improve performance and scalability. However, due to the broken quorum intersection assumption caused by the reduction of the replica number, the improvement is mostly at the cost of increased communication complexity which prevents existing TEE-based protocols to be applied to large-scale blockchain systems. In this paper, we propose TBFT, an efficient Byzantine fault-tolerant protocol in the partial synchrony setting, which has O(n) message complexity in both normal-case and view-change. Compared to previous protocols, TBFT uses TEE-assisted primitives to limit more types of malicious behaviors of replicas rather than preventing equivocation only, thereby reducing the latency and communication complexity of clients and replicas. Besides, we also introduce lightweight cryptographic primitives including a novel leader election mechanism and an efficient voting message aggregation mechanism for better security and performance. We evaluate TBFT via systematic analysis and experiments, and the results show that TBFT has better performance and scalability compared to other protocols.

East Asian VLBI Network Observations of Active Galactic Nuclei Jets: Imaging with KaVA+Tianma+Nanshan

The East Asian very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) Network (EAVN) is a rapidly evolving international VLBI array that is currently promoted under joint efforts among China, Japan, and Korea. EAVN aims at forming a joint VLBI Network by combining a large number of radio telescopes distributed over East Asian regions. After the combination of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) into KaVA, further expansion with the joint array in East Asia is actively promoted. Here we report the first imaging results (at 22 and 43 GHz) of bright radio sources obtained with KaVA connected to Tianma 65-m and Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescopes in China. To test the EAVN imaging performance for different sources, we observed four active galactic nuclei (AGN) having different brightness and morphology. As a result, we confirmed that Tianma 65-m Radio Telescope (TMRT) significantly enhances the overall array sensitivity, a factor of 4 improvement in baseline sensitivity and 2 in image dynamic range compared to the case of KaVA only. The addition of Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescope (NSRT) further doubled the east-west angular resolution. With the resulting high-dynamic-range, high-resolution images with EAVN (KaVA+TMRT+NSRT), various fine-scale structures in our targets, such as the counter-jet in M87, a kink-like morphology of the 3C273 jet and the weak emission in other sources, are successfully detected. This demonstrates the powerful capability of EAVN to study AGN jets and to achieve other science goals in general. Ongoing expansion of EAVN will further enhance the angular resolution, detection sensitivity and frequency coverage of the network.

TrustCross: Enabling Confidential Interoperability across Blockchains Using Trusted Hardware

With the rapid development of blockchain technology, different types of blockchains are adopted and interoperability across blockchains has received widespread attention. There have been many cross-chain solutions proposed in recent years, including notary scheme, sidechain, and relay chain. However, most of the existing platforms do not take confidentiality into account, although privacy has become an important concern for blockchain. In this paper, we present TrustCross, a privacy-preserving cross-chain platform to enable confidential interoperability across blockchains. The key insight behind TrustCross is to encrypt cross-chain communication data on the relay chain with the assistance of trusted execution environment and employ fine-grained access control to protect user privacy. Our experimental results show that TrustCross achieves reasonable latency and high scalability on the contract calls across heterogeneous blockchains.

Kaya: A Testing Framework for Blockchain-based Decentralized Applications

In recent years, many decentralized applications based on blockchain (DApp) have been developed. However, due to inadequate testing, DApps are easily exposed to serious vulnerabilities. We find three main challenges for DApp testing, i.e., the inherent complexity of DApp, inconvenient pre-state setting, and not-so-readable logs. In this paper, we propose a testing framework named Kaya to bridge these gaps. Kaya has three main functions. Firstly, Kaya proposes DApp behavior description language (DBDL) to make writing test cases easier. Test cases written in DBDL can also be automatically executed by Kaya. Secondly, Kaya supports a flexible and convenient way for test engineers to set the blockchain pre-states easily. Thirdly, Kaya transforms incomprehensible addresses into readable variables for easy comprehension. With these functions, Kaya can help test engineers test DApps more easily. Besides, to fit the various application environments, we provide two ways for test engineers to use Kaya, i.e., UI and command-line. Our experimental case demonstrates the potential of Kaya in helping test engineers to test DApps more easily.

Performance Analysis of the Libra Blockchain: An Experimental Study

Since Bitcoin was first introduced in 2008, many types of cryptocurrencies have been proposed based on blockchain. However, the performance of permissionless blockchains restricts the widespread of cryptocurrency. Recently, Libra was proposed by Facebook based on a permissioned blockchain, i.e. the Libra blockchain. The vision of Libra is to become a global currency supporting financial applications, but it is doubted whether the performance of the Libra blockchain is able to support frequent micropayment scenarios. In this paper, we propose a methodology to evaluate the performance of blockchain platforms and conducted an experimental study on the Libra blockchain. The results show that the Libra blockchain can only process about one thousand transactions per second at most, and the performance drops significantly as the number of validators increases. Although it outperforms permissionless blockchain platforms, the performance of the Libra blockchain is still unsatisfactory compared to other permissioned blockchains like Hyperledger Fabric and needs to make effective improvements in order to support global micropayment in the future.

EASYFLOW: Keep Ethereum Away From Overflow

While Ethereum smart contracts enabled a wide range of blockchain applications, they are extremely vulnerable to different forms of security attacks. Due to the fact that transactions to smart contracts commonly involve cryptocurrency transfer, any successful attacks can lead to money loss or even financial disorder. In this paper, we focus on the overflow attacks in Ethereum , mainly because they widely rooted in many smart contracts and comparatively easy to exploit. We have developed EASYFLOW , an overflow detector at Ethereum Virtual Machine level. The key insight behind EASYFLOW is a taint analysis based tracking technique to analyze the propagation of involved taints. Specifically, EASYFLOW can not only divide smart contracts into safe contracts, manifested overflows, well-protected overflows and potential overflows, but also automatically generate transactions to trigger potential overflows. In our preliminary evaluation, EASYFLOW managed to find potentially vulnerable Ethereum contracts with little runtime overhead.

Accelerated Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy with Deep Learning

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy serves as an indispensable tool in chemistry and biology but often suffers from long experimental time. We present a proof-of-concept of application of deep learning and neural network for high-quality, reliable, and very fast NMR spectra reconstruction from limited experimental data. We show that the neural network training can be achieved using solely synthetic NMR signal, which lifts the prohibiting demand for a large volume of realistic training data usually required in the deep learning approach.

Vandermonde Factorization of Hankel Matrix for Complex Exponential Signal Recovery -- Application in Fast NMR Spectroscopy

Many signals are modeled as a superposition of exponential functions in spectroscopy of chemistry, biology and medical imaging. This paper studies the problem of recovering exponential signals from a random subset of samples. We exploit the Vandermonde structure of the Hankel matrix formed by the exponential signal and formulate signal recovery as Hankel matrix completion with Vandermonde factorization (HVaF). A numerical algorithm is developed to solve the proposed model and its sequence convergence is analyzed theoretically. Experiments on synthetic data demonstrate that HVaF succeeds over a wider regime than the state-of-the-art nuclear-normminimization-based Hankel matrix completion method, while has a less restriction on frequency separation than the state-of-the-art atomic norm minimization and fast iterative hard thresholding methods. The effectiveness of HVaF is further validated on biological magnetic resonance spectroscopy data.

Current status of Shanghai VLBI correlator

Shanghai Astronomical Observatory has upgraded its DiFX cluster to 420 CPU cores and a 432-TB storage system at the end of 2014. An international network connection for the raw data transfer has also been established. The routine operations for IVS sessions including CRF, AOV, and APSG series began in early 2015. In addition to the IVS observations, the correlator is dedicated to astrophysical and astrometric programs with the Chinese VLBI Network and international joint VLBI observations. It also worked with the new-built Tianma 65-m radio telescope and successfully found fringes as high as at X/Ka and Q bands in late 2015. A more powerful platform is planned for the high data rate and massive data correlation tasks in the future.

High Efficient Reconstruction of Single-shot T2 Mapping from OverLapping-Echo Detachment Planar Imaging Based on Deep Residual Network

Purpose: An end-to-end deep convolutional neural network (CNN) based on deep residual network (ResNet) was proposed to efficiently reconstruct reliable T2 mapping from single-shot OverLapping-Echo Detachment (OLED) planar imaging. Methods: The training dataset was obtained from simulations carried out on SPROM software developed by our group. The relationship between the original OLED image containing two echo signals and the corresponded T2 mapping was learned by ResNet training. After the ResNet was trained, it was applied to reconstruct the T2 mapping from simulation and in vivo human brain data. Results: Though the ResNet was trained entirely on simulated data, the trained network was generalized well to real human brain data. The results from simulation and in vivo human brain experiments show that the proposed method significantly outperformed the echo-detachment-based method. Reliable T2 mapping was achieved within tens of milliseconds after the network had been trained while the echo-detachment-based OLED reconstruction method took minutes. Conclusion: The proposed method will greatly facilitate real-time dynamic and quantitative MR imaging via OLED sequence, and ResNet has the potential to reconstruct images from complex MRI sequence efficiently.

VLBI ecliptic plane survey: VEPS-1

We present here the results of the first part of the VLBI Ecliptic Plane Survey (VEPS) program. The goal of the program is to find all compact sources within $7.5^\circ$ of the ecliptic plane which are suitable as calibrators for anticipated phase referencing observations of spacecraft and determine their positions with accuracy at the 1.5~nrad level. We run the program in two modes: the search mode and the refining mode. In the search mode, a complete sample of all sources brighter than 50 mJy at 5 GHz listed in the Parkes-MIT-NRAO (PMN) and Green Bank 6~cm (GB6) catalogs, except those previously detected with VLBI, is observed. In the refining mode, the positions of all ecliptic plane sources, including those found in the search mode, are improved. By October 2016, thirteen 24-hr sessions that targeted all sources brighter than 100~mJy have been observed and analyzed. Among 3320 observed target sources, 555 objects have been detected. We also conducted a number of follow-up VLBI experiments in the refining mode and improved the positions of 249 ecliptic plane sources.

Hankel Matrix Nuclear Norm Regularized Tensor Completion for $N$-dimensional Exponential Signals

Signals are generally modeled as a superposition of exponential functions in spectroscopy of chemistry, biology and medical imaging. For fast data acquisition or other inevitable reasons, however, only a small amount of samples may be acquired and thus how to recover the full signal becomes an active research topic. But existing approaches can not efficiently recover $N$-dimensional exponential signals with $N\geq 3$. In this paper, we study the problem of recovering N-dimensional (particularly $N\geq 3$) exponential signals from partial observations, and formulate this problem as a low-rank tensor completion problem with exponential factor vectors. The full signal is reconstructed by simultaneously exploiting the CANDECOMP/PARAFAC structure and the exponential structure of the associated factor vectors. The latter is promoted by minimizing an objective function involving the nuclear norm of Hankel matrices. Experimental results on simulated and real magnetic resonance spectroscopy data show that the proposed approach can successfully recover full signals from very limited samples and is robust to the estimated tensor rank.

Accelerated Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy with Vandermonde Factorization

Multi-dimensional magnetic resonance spectroscopy is an important tool for studying molecular structures, interactions and dynamics in bio-engineering. The data acquisition time, however, is relatively long and non-uniform sampling can be applied to reduce this time. To obtain the full spectrum,a reconstruction method with Vandermonde factorization is proposed. This method explores the general signal property in magnetic resonance spectroscopy: Its time domain signal is approximated by a sum of a few exponentials. Results on synthetic and realistic data show that the new approach can achieve faithful spectrum reconstruction and outperforms state-of-the-art low rank Hankel matrix method.

The Scale-free Network of Passwords : Visualization and Estimation of Empirical Passwords

In this paper, we present a novel vision of large scale of empirical password sets available and improve the understanding of passwords by revealing their interconnections and considering the security on a level of the whole password set instead of one single password level. Through the visualization of Yahoo, Phpbb, 12306, etc. we, for the first time, show what the spatial structure of empirical password sets are like and take the community and clustering patterns of the passwords into account to shed lights on the definition of popularity of a password based on their frequency and degree separately. Furthermore, we propose a model of statistical guessing attack from the perspective of the data's topological space, which provide an explanation of the "cracking curve". We also give a lower bound of the minimum size of the dictionary needed to compromise arbitrary ratio of any given password set by proving that it is equivalent to the minimum dominating set problem, which is a NP-complete problem. Hence the minimal dictionary problem is also NP-complete.

Fast Multi-class Dictionaries Learning with Geometrical Directions in MRI Reconstruction

Objective: Improve the reconstructed image with fast and multi-class dictionaries learning when magnetic resonance imaging is accelerated by undersampling the k-space data. Methods: A fast orthogonal dictionary learning method is introduced into magnetic resonance image reconstruction to providing adaptive sparse representation of images. To enhance the sparsity, image is divided into classified patches according to the same geometrical direction and dictionary is trained within each class. A new sparse reconstruction model with the multi-class dictionaries is proposed and solved using a fast alternating direction method of multipliers. Results: Experiments on phantom and brain imaging data with acceleration factor up to 10 and various undersampling patterns are conducted. The proposed method is compared with state-of-the-art magnetic resonance image reconstruction methods. Conclusion: Artifacts are better suppressed and image edges are better preserved than the compared methods. Besides, the computation of the proposed approach is much faster than the typical K-SVD dictionary learning method in magnetic resonance image reconstruction. Significance: The proposed method can be exploited in undersapmled magnetic resonance imaging to reduce data acquisition time and reconstruct images with better image quality.

Projected Iterative Soft-thresholding Algorithm for Tight Frames in Compressed Sensing Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Compressed sensing has shown great potentials in accelerating magnetic resonance imaging. Fast image reconstruction and high image quality are two main issues faced by this new technology. It has been shown that, redundant image representations, e.g. tight frames, can significantly improve the image quality. But how to efficiently solve the reconstruction problem with these redundant representation systems is still challenging. This paper attempts to address the problem of applying iterative soft-thresholding algorithm (ISTA) to tight frames based magnetic resonance image reconstruction. By introducing the canonical dual frame to construct the orthogonal projection operator on the range of the analysis sparsity operator, we propose a projected iterative soft-thresholding algorithm (pISTA) and further accelerate it by incorporating the strategy proposed by Beck and Teboulle in 2009. We theoretically prove that pISTA converges to the minimum of a function with a balanced tight frame sparsity. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves better reconstruction than the widely used synthesis sparse model and the accelerated pISTA converges faster or comparable to the state-of-art smoothing FISTA. One major advantage of pISTA is that only one extra parameter, the step size, is introduced and the numerical solution is stable to it in terms of image reconstruction errors, thus allowing easily setting in many fast magnetic resonance imaging applications.

Maximal rectification ratios for bi-segment thermal rectifiers

We study bi-segment thermal rectifiers whose forward heat fluxes are greater than reverse counterparts. Presently, a shortcoming of thermal rectifiers is that the rectification ratio, namely the forward flux divided by the reverse flux, remains too small for practical applications. In this study, we have managed to discover and theoretically derive the ultimate limit of such ratios, which are validated by numerical simulations, experiments, and micro-scale Hamiltonian-oscillator analyses. For rectifiers whose thermal conductivities are linear with the temperature, this limit is simply a numerical value of 3. For those whose conductivities are nonlinear with temperatures, the maxima equal $κ_{max}/κ_{min}$, where the two extremes denote values of the solid segment materials that can be possibly found or fabricated within a reasonable temperature range on earth. Recommendations for manufacturing high-ratio rectifiers are also given with examples.

Multiple-Level Power Allocation Strategy for Secondary Users in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we propose a multiple-level power allocation strategy for the secondary user (SU) in cognitive radio (CR) networks. Different from the conventional strategies, where SU either stays silent or transmit with a constant/binary power depending on the busy/idle status of the primary user (PU), the proposed strategy allows SU to choose different power levels according to a carefully designed function of the receiving energy. The way of the power level selection is optimized to maximize the achievable rate of SU under the constraints of average transmit power at SU and average interference power at PU. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can significantly improve the performance of SU compared to the conventional strategies.
