Transverse momentum dependent distribution functions in the threshold limit

We apply the joint threshold and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization theorem to introduce new threshold-TMD distribution functions, including threshold-TMD parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs). We apply Soft-Collinear Effective Theory and renormalization group methods to carry out QCD evolution for both threshold-TMD PDFs and FFs. We show the universality of threshold-TMD functions among three standard processes, i.e. the Drell-Yan production in $pp$ collisions, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and back-to-back two hadron production in $e^+e^-$ collisions. In the end, we present the numerical predictions for different threshold-TMD functions and also transverse momentum distributions at $pp$, $ep$, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Transverse Energy-Energy Correlators in the Color-Glass Condensate at the Electron-Ion Collider

We investigate the transverse energy-energy correlators (TEEC) in the small-$x$ regime at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Focusing on the back-to-back production of electron-hadron pairs in both $ep$ and $eA$ collisions, we establish a factorization theorem given in terms of the hard function, quark distributions, soft functions, and TEEC jet functions, where the gluon saturation effect is incorporated. Numerical results for TEEC in both $ep$ and $eA$ collisions are presented, together with the nuclear modification factor $R_A$. Our analysis reveals that TEEC observables in deep inelastic scattering provide a valuable approach for probing gluon saturation phenomena. Our findings underscore the significance of measuring TEEC at the EIC, emphasizing its efficacy in advancing our understanding of gluon saturation and nuclear modifications in high-energy collisions.

Probing Transverse Momentum Dependent Structures with Azimuthal Dependence of Energy Correlators

We study the azimuthal angle dependence of the energy-energy correlators $\langle \mathcal{E}(\hat{n}_1)\mathcal{E}(\hat{n}_2)\rangle$ in the back-to-back region for $e^+e^-$ annihilation and deep inelastic scattering (DIS) processes with general polarization of the proton beam. We demonstrate that the polarization information of the beam and the underlying partons from the hard scattering is propagated into the azimuthal angle dependence of the energy-energy correlators. In the process, we define the Collins-type EEC jet functions and introduce a new EEC observable using the lab-frame angles in the DIS process. Furthermore, we extend our formalism to explore the two-point energy correlation between hadrons with different quantum numbers $\mathbb{S}_i$ in the back-to-back limit $\langle \mathcal{E}_{\mathbb{S}_1}(\hat{n}_1)\mathcal{E}_{\mathbb{S}_2}(\hat{n}_2)\rangle$. We find that in the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) region the nonperturbative information is entirely encapsulated by a single number. Using our formalism, we present several phenomenological studies that showcase how energy correlators can be used to probe transverse momentum dependent structures.

Correspondence between Color Glass Condensate and High-Twist Formalism

The Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective theory and the collinear factorization at high-twist (HT) are two well-known frameworks describing perturbative QCD multiple scatterings in nuclear media. It has long been recognized that these two formalisms have their own domain of validity in different kinematics regions. Taking direct photon production in proton-nucleus collisions as an example, we clarify for the first time the relation between CGC and HT at the level of a physical observable. We show that the CGC formalism beyond shock-wave approximation, and with the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal interference effect is consistent with the HT formalism in the transition region where they overlap. Such a unified picture paves the way for mapping out the phase diagram of parton density in nuclear medium from dilute to dense region.

QCD resummation of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp and pA collisions

We study the azimuthal angular decorrelations of dijet production in both proton-proton (pp) and proton-nucleus (pA) collisions. By utilizing soft-collinear effective theory, we establish the factorization and resummation formalism at the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for the azimuthal angular decorrelations in the back-to-back limit in pp collisions. We propose an approach where the nuclear modifications to dijet production in pA collisions are accounted for in the nuclear modified transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (nTMDPDFs), which contain both collinear and transverse dynamics. This approach naturally generalizes the well-established formalism related to the nuclear modified collinear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). We demonstrate strong consistency between our methodology and the CMS measurements in both pp and pA collisions, and make predictions for dijet production in the forward rapidity region in pA collisions at LHC kinematics and for mid-rapidity kinematics at sPHENIX. Throughout this paper, we focus on the application of this formalism to a simultaneous fit to both collinear and transverse momentum dependent contributions to the transverse momentum dependent distributions.

Direct quarkonium-plus-gluon production in DIS in the Color Glass Condensate

We compute the differential cross-section for direct quarkonium production accompanied by a gluon in high-energy deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small-$x$. We employ the Non-Relativistic QCD factorization framework, focusing on the $S$-wave contribution to the formation of the quarkonium, and including both color singlet and octet contributions. Our short distance coefficients for the production of the heavy quark pair are obtained within the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. Our results pave the way towards the next-to-leading order computation of direct quarkonium in DIS, as well as the study of azimuthal correlations of direct quarkonium and jet.

Collins-type Energy-Energy Correlators and Nucleon Structure

We generalize the conventional Energy-Energy Correlator (EEC) to include the azimuthal angle dependence, so to define azimuthal angle dependent EEC observables. We study this new EEC observable in $e^+e^-$ and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). In the back-to-back region, we find that the azimuthal angle dependent EEC is sensitive to both the unpolarized EEC jet function and a Collins-type EEC jet function. While the unpolarized EEC jet function is related to the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation function, the Collins-type EEC jet function is connected with the Collins fragmentation function. We further demonstrate how the new observables allow us to access to the 3D structure of nucleons, especially the spin-dependent ones.

The case for an EIC Theory Alliance: Theoretical Challenges of the EIC

We outline the physics opportunities provided by the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). These include the study of the parton structure of the nucleon and nuclei, the onset of gluon saturation, the production of jets and heavy flavor, hadron spectroscopy and tests of fundamental symmetries. We review the present status and future challenges in EIC theory that have to be addressed in order to realize this ambitious and impactful physics program, including how to engage a diverse and inclusive workforce. In order to address these many-fold challenges, we propose a coordinated effort involving theory groups with differing expertise is needed. We discuss the scientific goals and scope of such an EIC Theory Alliance.

The Multiplicity Scaling of the Fragmentation Function

The single-particle inclusive fragmentation function and the particle multiplicity are observables of fundamental importance in studying properties of quantum chromodynamics at colliders. It is well-known that at high energies, the multiplicity distribution satisfies KNO scaling in which all moments are proportional to powers of the mean multiplicity. We prove that, under weak assumptions, the leading dependence of the fragmentation function on multiplicity is itself a kind of KNO scaling in which all moments are inversely proportional to powers of the mean multiplicity. This scaling with multiplicity additionally accounts for the dominant dependence on collision energy in the fragmentation function. The proof relies crucially on properties of the fragmentation function conditioned on the total multiplicity and application of the Stieltjes moment problem. In the process, we construct a novel basis of the fragmentation function expressed as an overall exponential suppression times a series of Laguerre polynomials. We study this scaling of the fragmentation function in experimental electron-position collision data and observe that residual scale violations are significantly reduced.

TMD Handbook

This handbook provides a comprehensive review of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions, commonly referred to as transverse momentum distributions (TMDs). TMDs describe the distribution of partons inside the proton and other hadrons with respect to both their longitudinal and transverse momenta. They provide unique insight into the internal momentum and spin structure of hadrons, and are a key ingredient in the description of many collider physics cross sections. Understanding TMDs requires a combination of theoretical techniques from quantum field theory, nonperturbative calculations using lattice QCD, and phenomenological analysis of experimental data. The handbook covers a wide range of topics, from theoretical foundations to experimental analyses, as well as recent developments and future directions. It is intended to provide an essential reference for researchers and graduate students interested in understanding the structure of hadrons and the dynamics of partons in high energy collisions.

Understanding Jet Charge

The jet charge is an old observable that has proven uniquely useful for discrimination of jets initiated by different flavors of light quarks, for example. In this Letter, we propose an approach to understanding the jet charge by establishing simple, robust assumptions that hold to good approximation non-perturbatively, such as isospin conservation and large particle multiplicity in the jets, forgoing any attempt at a perturbative analysis. From these assumptions, the jet charge distribution with fixed particle multiplicity takes the form of a Gaussian by the central limit theorem and whose mean and variance are related to fractional-power moments of single particle energy distributions. These results make several concrete predictions for the scaling of the jet charge with the multiplicity, explaining many of the results already in the literature, and new results we validate in Monte Carlo simulation.

Transverse-momentum-dependent factorization at next-to-leading power

We study transverse momentum dependent factorization and resummation at sub-leading power in Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In these processes the sub-leading power contributions to the cross section enter as a kinematic power correction to the leptonic tensor, and the kinematic, intrinsic, and dynamic sub-leading contributions to the hadronic tensor. By consistently treating the power counting of the interactions, we demonstrate renormalization group consistency. We calculate the anomalous dimensions of the kinematic and intrinsic sub-leading correlation functions at one loop and find that the evolution equations give rise to anomalous dimension matrices which mix leading and sub-leading power distribution functions. Additionally we calculate the hard and soft functions associated with each of these contributions. We find that these hard and soft contributions differ from those at the leading power. Finally, we calculate the rapidity anomalous dimension for the dynamic sub-leading distributions and find that it is the same as the leading power anomalous dimension. We then comment on the implications for the soft function associated with this contribution. Using this information, we establish the factorization formalism at sub-leading power for these processes at the one-loop level.

Probing the jet transport coefficient of cold nuclear matter in electron-ion collisions

We present a study of the nuclear-medium induced transverse momentum broadening of particle production in future electron-ion-collision~(EIC) experiments. By considering the multiple scattering between hard partons and cold nuclear medium within the higher-twist factorization framework in perturbative QCD, we calculate the transverse momentum broadening of single hadron production in semi-inclusive measurements, as well as the nuclear enhancement of the transverse momentum imbalance for di-hadron and heavy-meson pair productions. In particular, a kinematics dependent non-perturbative jet transport coefficient $\hat q=\hat q(x,Q^2)$ extracted in a global analysis of the current data, together with its uncertainty determined with a Hessian method, are input into our calculations and are available for the community. Significant kinematic and color-state dependences of the nuclear induced broadening/imbalance are predicted. Our results indicate that the future EIC measurements are able to provide powerful constraints on the kinematic dependence of the transport coefficient $\hat q$ and thus greatly facilitate the jet tomography of cold nuclear medium.

Quantum Simulation of Chiral Phase Transitions

The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model has been widely studied for investigating the chiral phase structure of strongly interacting matter. The study of the thermodynamics of field theories within the framework of Lattice Field Theory is limited by the sign problem, which prevents Monte Carlo evaluation of the functional integral at a finite chemical potential. Using the quantum imaginary time evolution (QITE) algorithm, we construct a quantum simulation for the $(1+1)$ dimensional NJL model at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. We observe consistency among digital quantum simulation, exact diagonalization, and analytical solution, indicating further applications of quantum computing in simulating QCD thermodynamics.

Neutrino-tagged jets at the Electron-Ion Collider

We explore the potential of jet observables in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (CC DIS) events at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Tagging jets with a recoiling neutrino, which can be identified by the event's missing transverse momentum, will allow for flavor-sensitive measurements of Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). We present the first predictions for transverse-spin asymmetries in azimuthal neutrino-jet correlations and hadron-in-jet measurements. We study the kinematic reach and the precision of these measurements and explore their feasibility using parameterized detector simulations. We conclude that jet production in CC DIS, while challenging in terms of luminosity requirements, will complement the EIC experimental program to study the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon encoded in TMDs.

Studying chirality imbalance with quantum algorithms

To describe the chiral magnetic effect, the chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ is introduced to imitate the impact of topological charge changing transitions in the quark-gluon plasma under the influence of an external magnetic field. We employ the (1+1) dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model to study the chiral phase structure and chirality charge density of strongly interacting matter with finite chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ in a quantum simulator. By performing the Quantum imaginary time evolution (QITE) algorithm, we simulate the (1+1) dimensional NJL model on the lattice at various temperature $T$ and chemical potentials $μ$, $μ_5$ and find that the quantum simulations are in good agreement with analytical calculations as well as exact diagonalization of the lattice Hamiltonian.

Transverse Lambda production at the future Electron-Ion Collider

We provide a comprehensive overview of transversely polarized $Λ$ production at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). In particular, we study both spontaneous transverse $Λ$ polarization as well as the transverse spin transfer within the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) factorization region. To describe spontaneous $Λ$ polarization, we consider the contribution from the TMD Polarizing Fragmentation Function (TMD PFF). Similarly, we study the contribution of the transverse spin transfer originating from the transversity TMD Fragmentation Function (TMD FF). We provide projections for the statistical uncertainties in the corresponding spin observables at the future EIC. Using these statistical uncertainties, we characterize the role that the future EIC will play in constraining these distributions. We perform an impact study in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process for spontaneous $Λ$ polarization with a proton beam. We find that the projected experimental data leads to a significant decrease in the uncertainties for the $u$ and sea TMD PFFs. Furthermore, to access the impact of the EIC on the transversity TMD FF, we perform the first extraction of the transversity TMD FF from the recent COMPASS data. We compare the statistical uncertainties of the future EIC with the theoretical uncertainties from our extraction and find that the EIC could have a significant role in constraining this distribution. Finally, we also provide projections for both spontaneous $Λ$ polarization as well as the transverse spin transfer inside the jets in back-to-back electron-jet production at the EIC.

Nuclear Modified Transverse Momentum Distributions and 3D Imaging in Nuclei

In this proceeding, we review our recent work in which we performed the first global analysis of nuclear modified Transverse Momentum Distribution Functions (TMDs). We demonstrate for the first time that the global set of TMD experimental data from HERMES, E866, E772, RHIC, ATLAS, and CMS, can be described using a simple model which accounts for the nuclear modifications for the TMDs as a non-perturbative correction. Using this model, we extract the nuclear modified TMDs for the first time.
