First global QCD analysis of the TMD $\boldsymbol{g_{1T}}$ from semi-inclusive DIS data

The worm-gear transverse momentum dependent (TMD) function $g_{1T}$ is one of the eight leading-twist TMDs and has the probabilistic interpretation of finding a longitudinally polarized quark inside a transversely polarized hadron. In this work, we present the first simultaneous extraction of $g_{1T}$ from all the available experimental measurements. The study involves the analysis of COMPASS, HERMES, and Jefferson Lab data on semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering using Monte Carlo techniques. We also compare $g_{1T}$ obtained from this experimental data with different theoretical approaches, such as the large-$N_c$ approximation, the Wandzura-Wilczek-type approximation, and lattice QCD.

Spin Asymmetries in Electron-jet Production at the EIC

We investigate all the possible spin asymmetries that can occur in back-to-back electron-jet production with hadron observed inside a jet in electron-proton collisions. We derive the factorization formalism for all spin asymmetries and perform phenomenological studies for the future electron ion collider kinematics. We illustrate that the back-to-back electron-jet production opens up new opportunities to study transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions and distribution functions.

Resummation of the Sivers asymmetry in heavy flavor dijet production at the Electron-Ion Collider

We review our transverse momentum dependent factorization and resummation formalism for heavy flavor dijet production at the EIC. In this formalism, we have calculated the heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, and in the resummed expression for the cross section. By establishing this formalism, we then study the effects of the mass corrections by providing predictions at the EIC for the massive case and for the case where the mass is neglected. We find that the heavy flavor mass effects can give sizable corrections to the predicted asymmetry.

Three-dimensional imaging in nuclei

We perform the first simultaneous global QCD extraction of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions and the TMD fragmentation functions in nuclei. We have considered the world set of data from semi-inclusive electron-nucleus deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan di-lepton production. In total, this data set consists of 126 data points from HERMES, Fermilab, RHIC and LHC. Working at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, we achieve a $χ^2/dof = 1.045$. In this analysis, we quantify the broadening of TMDs in nuclei comparing with those in free nucleons for the first time. We also make predictions for the ongoing JLab 12 GeV program and future EIC measurements.

Spin asymmetries in electron-jet production at the future electron ion collider

We study all the possible spin asymmetries that can arise in back-to-back electron-jet production, $ep\rightarrow e+\text{jet}+X$, as well as the associated jet fragmentation process, $ep\rightarrow e+ \text{jet} (h)+X$, in electron-proton collisions. We derive the factorization formalism for these spin asymmetries and perform the corresponding phenomenology for the kinematics relevant to the future electron ion collider. In the case of unpolarized electron-proton scattering, we also give predictions for azimuthal asymmetries for the HERA experiment. This demonstrates that electron-jet production is an outstanding process for probing unpolarized and polarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions.

QCD evolution of the gluon Sivers function in heavy flavor dijet production at the Electron-Ion Collider

Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we develop the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization formalism for heavy flavor dijet production in polarized-proton-electron collisions. We consider heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, as well as the associated evolution equations. Using this formalism, we generate a prediction for the gluon Sivers asymmetry for charm and bottom dijet production at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Furthermore, we compare theoretical predictions with and without the inclusion of finite quark masses. We find that the heavy flavor mass effects can give sizable corrections to the predicted asymmetry.

Electron-Ion Collider impact study on the tensor charge of the nucleon

In this letter we study the impact of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) on the phenomenological extraction of the tensor charge from a QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries (SSAs). We generate EIC pseudo-data for the Collins effect in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering for proton and $^{3\!}He$ beams across multiple center-of-mass energies. We find a significant reduction in the uncertainties for the up, down, and isovector tensor charges that will make their extraction from EIC data on SSAs as precise as current lattice QCD calculations. We also analyze the constraints placed by future data from the proposed SoLID experiment at Jefferson Lab, discuss its important complementary role to the EIC, and present the combined impact from both facilities.

Dynamic Jet Charge

We propose a modified definition of the jet charge, the "dynamic jet charge", where the constant jet momentum fraction weighting parameter, $κ$, in the standard jet charge definition is generalized to be a function of a dynamical property of the jet or the individual jet constituents. The dynamic jet charge can complement analyses based on the standard definition and give improved discrimination between quark and gluon initiated jets and between jets initiated by different quark flavors. We focus on the specific scenario where each hadron in the jet contributes to the dynamic jet charge with a $κ$-value dynamically determined by its jet momentum fraction. The corresponding dynamic jet charge distributions have qualitatively distinct features and are typically characterized by a multiple peak structure. For proton-proton collisions, compared to the standard jet charge, the dynamic jet charge gives significantly improved discrimination between quark and gluon initiated jets and comparable discrimination between $u$- and $d$-quark initiated jets. In Pythia simulations of heavy ion collisions, the dynamic jet charge is found to have higher jet discrimination power compared to the standard jet charge, remaining robust against the increased contamination from underlying event. We also present phenomenological applications of the dynamic jet charge to probe nuclear flavor structure.

Transverse $Λ$ Polarization in $e^+ e^-$ collisions

In this paper we study transverse polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in single-inclusive leptonic annihilation. We show that when the transverse momentum of the $Λ$ baryon is measured with respect to the thrust axis, a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism is required and the polarization is generated by the TMD polarizing fragmentation function (TMD PFF), $D_{1T}^\perp$. However, when the transverse momentum of the $Λ$ baryon is measured with respect to the momentum of the initial leptons, a collinear twist-3 formalism is required and the polarization is generated by the intrinsic collinear twist-3 fragmentation function $D_{T}$. Thus while these measurements differ from one another only by a change in the measurement axis, they probe different distribution functions. Recently, Belle measured a significant polarization in single-inclusive $Λ$ baryon production as a function of the transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. However, this data can in principle be re-analyzed to measure the polarization as a function of the transverse momentum of the $Λ$ baryon with respect to the lepton pair. This observable could be the first significant probe of the function, $D_{T}$. In this paper, we first develop a TMD formalism for $Λ$ polarization; we then present a recent twist-3 formalism that was established to describe $Λ$ polarization. Using the TMD formalism, we demonstrate that the $Λ$ polarization at OPAL and Belle can be described using the twist-2 TMD factorization formalism. Finally, we make a theoretical prediction for this polarization in the collinear twist-3 formalism at Belle.

Global analysis of the Sivers functions at NLO+NNLL in QCD

We perform global fit to the quark Sivers function within the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism in QCD. We simultaneously fit Sivers asymmetry data from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) at COMPASS, HERMES, and JLab, from Drell-Yan lepton pair production at COMPASS, and from $W/Z$ boson at RHIC. This extraction is performed at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We find excellent agreement between our extracted asymmetry and the experimental data for SIDIS and Drell-Yan lepton pair production, while tension arises when trying to describe the spin asymmetries of $W/Z$ bosons at RHIC. We carefully assess the situation, and we study in details the impact of the RHIC data and their implications through different ways of performing the fit. In addition, we find that the quality of the description of $W/Z$ vector boson asymmetry data could be strongly sensitive to the DGLAP evolution of Qiu-Sterman function, besides the usual TMD evolution. We present discussion on this and the implications for measurements of the transverse-spin asymmetries at the future Electron Ion Collider.

Threshold Resummation for Hadron Production in the Small-$x$ Region

We study the single hadron inclusive production in the forward rapidity region in proton-nucleus collisions. We find the long-standing negative cross section at next-to-leading-order (NLO) is driven by the large negative threshold logarithmic contributions. We established a factorization theorem for resumming these logarithms with systematically improvable accuracy within the color glass condensate formalism. We demonstrate how the threshold leading logarithmic accuracy can be realized by a suitable scale choice in the NLO results. The NLO spectrums with the threshold logarithms resummed remain positive and impressive agreements with experimental data are observed.

Jet Charge: A Flavor Prism for Spin Asymmetries at the EIC

We propose the jet charge observable as a novel probe of flavor structure in the nucleon spin program at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). We show that jet charge measurements can substantially enhance the sensitivity of spin asymmetries to different partonic flavors in the nucleon. This sensitivity can be further improved by constructing the jet charge using only a subset of hadron species (pions or kaons) in the jet. As an example, we use the Sivers asymmetry in back-to-back electron-jet production at the EIC to show that the jet charge can be a unique tool in constraining the Sivers function for different partonic flavors.

The Sivers Asymmetry in Hadronic Dijet Production

We study the single spin asymmetry in the back-to-back dijet production in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions. Such an asymmetry is generated by the Sivers functions in the incoming polarized proton. We propose a QCD formalism in terms of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, which allow us to resum the large logarithms that arise in the perturbative calculations. We make predictions for the Sivers asymmetry of hadronic dijet production at the kinematic region that is relevant to the experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We further compute the spin asymmetries in the selected positive and negative jet charge bins, to separate the contributions from $u$- and $d$-quark Sivers functions. We find that both the sign and size of our numerical results are roughly consistent with the preliminary results from the STAR collaboration at the RHIC.

Efficient Fourier Transforms for Transverse Momentum Dependent Distributions

Hadron production at low transverse momenta in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering can be described by transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. This formalism has also been widely used to study the Drell-Yan process and back-to-back hadron pair production in $e^+e^-$ collisions. These processes are the main ones for extractions of TMD parton distribution functions and TMD fragmentation functions, which encode important information about nucleon structure and hadronization. One of the most widely used TMD factorization formalism in phenomenology formulates TMD observables in coordinate $b_\perp$-space, the conjugate space of the transverse momentum. The Fourier transform from $b_\perp$-space back into transverse momentum space is sufficiently complicated due to oscillatory integrands that it requires a careful and computationally intensive numerical treatment in order to avoid potentially large numerical errors. Within the TMD formalism, the azimuthal angular dependence is analytically integrated and the two-dimensional $b_\perp$ integration reduces to a one-dimensional integration over the magnitude $b_\perp$. In this paper we develop a fast numerical Hankel transform algorithm for such a $b_\perp$-integration that improves the numerical accuracy of TMD calculations in all standard processes. Libraries for this algorithm are implemented in Python 2.7 and 3, C++, as well as FORTRAN77. All packages are made available open source.

Origin of single transverse-spin asymmetries in high-energy collisions

In this paper we perform the first simultaneous QCD global analysis of data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan, $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadron pairs, and proton-proton collisions. Consequently, we are able to extract a universal set of non-perturbative functions that describes the observed asymmetries in these reactions. The outcome of our analysis indicates single transverse-spin asymmetries in high-energy collisions have a common origin. Furthermore, we achieve the first phenomenological agreement with lattice QCD on the up and down quark tensor charges.

QCD resummation on single hadron transverse momentum distribution with the thrust axis

We derive the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization and resummation formula of the unpolarized transverse momentum distribution ($j_T$) for the single hadron production with the thrust axis in electron-positron collision. Two different kinematic regions are considered, including small transverse momentum limit $j_T \ll Q$, and joint transverse momentum and threshold limit $j_T \ll Q(1-z_h) \ll Q$, where $Q$ and $z_h$ are the hard scattering energy and the observed hadron momentum fraction. Using effective theory methods, we resum logarithms $\ln(Q/j_T)$ and $\ln(1-z_h)$ to all orders. In the end we present the differential cross sections and Gaussian widths calculated for the inclusive charged pion production and find that our results are consistent with the measurements reported by the Belle collaboration.

Jet-based measurements of Sivers and Collins asymmetries at the future Electron-Ion Collider

We present predictions and projections for hadron-in-jet measurements and electron-jet azimuthal correlations at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). These observables directly probe the three-dimensional (3D) structure of hadrons, in particular, the quark transversity and Sivers parton distributions and the Collins fragmentation functions. We explore the feasibility of these experimental measurements by detector simulations and discuss detector requirements. We conclude that jet observables have the potential to enhance the 3D imaging EIC program.

Predictive power of transverse-momentum-dependent distributions

We investigate the predictive power of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions as a function of the light-cone momentum fraction $x$ and the hard scale $Q$ defined by the process. We apply the saddle point approximation to the unpolarized quark and gluon transverse momentum distributions and evaluate the position of the saddle point as a function of the kinematics. We determine quantitatively that the predictive power for an unpolarized transverse momentum distribution is maximal in the large-$Q$ and small-$x$ region. For cross sections the predictive power of the TMD factorization formalism is generally enhanced by considering the convolution of two distributions, and we explicitly consider the case of $Z$ and $H^0$ boson production. In the kinematic regions where the predictive power is not maximal, the distributions are sensitive to the non-perturbative hadron structure. Thus, these regions are critical for investigating hadron tomography in a three-dimensional momentum space.
